The Ballistic Missile War Of Israel and USA's Expenses In Life and Money

December

On 16 December, the US carried out an airstrike on a command and control facility in Sanaa, the capital of Yemen, held by the Houthis,  that was used in attacks against US naval vessels and merchant ships in the southern Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.

On 21 December, CENTCOM announced that it carried out precision strikes on a missile storage facility and a command-and-control site in SanaaAlHadath reported that fuel depots, power stations, and military targets were hit. The strikes were initially blamed on Israel.

On 22 December, CENTCOM said a F/A-18 Hornet that had taken off from the aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman was shot down by friendly fire coming from the guided missile cruiser USS Gettysburg over the Red Sea. Its two occupants were rescued.

Yemen hit Tel Aviv with a missile .

A missile fired from Yemen hit Tel Aviv overnight into Saturday, Israeli

authorities said, in a rare instance of a failed interception over the city.

Its Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense (Thaad) battery will sit alongside Israel's existing systems - Iron Dome, David's Sling, Arrow 2 and Arrow 3.  The defences are designed to intercept incoming missiles at a variety of altitudes and distances.

Israel’s military said the projectile landed in Tel Aviv’s southern Jaffa

area, adding that attempts to intercept a (ballistic) missile from

Yemen failed shortly after sirens sounded in the area.  16 people

sustained minor injuries, according to emergency services, but no

fatalities were reported. This was reported on December 21.

Israel’s second-largest city, Tel Aviv is the country’s commercial and

diplomatic center. Direct hits from projectiles fired at the coastal city

are rare, due to Israel’s extensive air defenses.

Ballistic missiles are powered initially by a rocket or series of rockets

in stages, but then follow an unpowered trajectory that arches

upwards before descending to reach its intended target.

Ballistic missiles can carry either nuclear or

conventional warheads.

There  are four general classifications of ballistic missiles based on

their  range, or the maximum distance the missile can travel: 

Short-range: less than 1,000 kilometers (approximately 620 miles)

also known as “tactical” ballistic missiles.

 *** Medium-range: between 1,000 and 3,000 kilometers (approximate

ly 620-1,860 miles), also known as “theater” ballistic missiles. Yemen

is 2,303 km. or 1,431.018 miles away from Tel Aviv.

 Intermediate-range: between 3,000 and 5,500 kilometers

(approximately 1,860-3,410 miles)

 Long-range: more than 5,500 kilometers

(approximately 3,410 miles), also known as intercontinental or

strategic ballistic missiles. Intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs)

can fly much further than the minimum range; for example,

Russia could hit Chicago with an ICBM   launched

which is located 9,156 kilometers (5,689miles) away.

Iran could hit Israel with a medium ranged missile  launched

which is 1,724.48 kms (1,071.54 miles) away.

The cost of a missile can vary significantly depending on the type

and model, but generally ranges from a few million dollars for a

standard missile like an SM-2 to upwards of $10 million for

more advanced interceptors like the SM-3, with some

hypersonic missiles potentially costing as much as $40 million each.

Key points about missile costs:
  • Standard Missiles: A typical missile like the SM-2 can cost around $2 million per unit.
  • Advanced Interceptors: Missiles like the SM-3 can cost between $10 and $30 million each.
  • Hypersonic Missiles: Newer hypersonic missiles like the LRHW can cost upwards of $40 million per unit.
