The Jews of New Zealand

Nadene Goldfoot

New Zealand has been under British dominion.  Jews originally from England arrived in New Zealand in the first immigrant ships in 1840.  They had been in other places since since they were expulsed from England in 1290, and would not be allowed to return to England until 1655.

From the late 18th century, the country was regularly visited by explorers and other sailors, missionaries, traders and adventurers. By 1831-1837, Joel Samuel Polack, Jewish,  arrived who was one of the earliest writers about New Zealand. "Joel Samuel Polack, an Anglo-Jew, wrote two widely read books on his 1831–1837 travels. He detailed his interaction with the Maori people, made notes on flora and fauna and concluded that commercially lucrative flax production on an immense scale was possible."

"As early as the 1820s, Jewish traders were among the shifting group of whalers, whaling crews, mariners, and missionaries who explored New Zealand. Three Jews came in the first 700 colonists to settle at Port Nicholson.

"In 1840 the Treaty of Waitangi was signed between the British Crown and various Māori chiefs, bringing New Zealand into the British Empire and giving Māori the same rights as British subjects. However, disputes over the differing translations of the Treaty and settler desire to acquire land from Māori led to the New Zealand Wars from 1843."  "By 1848 there were 61 Jews in the colony of Port Nicholson. Ten years later there were 188, mostly in Auckland."

"Quite a number arrived during the gold rush days and were to be found predominantly on the West Coast of the South Island. In 1890 Polish and Russian Jews arrived, fleeing oppression under the Tsar."  The first Aliyah to Palestine had already started in 1880.  The would be four more throughout the years.  Jews were also starting to immigrate to the United States during that deplorable period.

"Abraham Hort Senior saw New Zealand as a possible haven for impoverished English Jews and a potential refuge for oppressed Jews of eastern Europe and elsewhere. ""The first Jewish settlers to arrive were Abraham Hort, Jr along with two brothers, Solomon and Benjamin Levy in 1840.
Elizabeth Levy and Esther Solomon: The Jews' Hospital (Neveh zedak, which was largely funded by the Goldsmid family) sponsored two Jewish women to emigrate (from England to New Zealand)  in 1841 on the ship, "the Birman" :The Jewish community in WELLINGTON was founded by Abraham Hort of London under the authority of the chief rabbi in 1843.  "About 500 came to Wellington. " "David Isaacs, came with Abraham Hort, also an alumnus of the Jews Hospital."

Some Jews had been subsidized by a Jewish charity in London which had a mission of caring for the poor and orphaned young people in the community. These "subsidized" Jewish immigrants were also intended by their benefactors to be devout members of the fledgling Jewish community in Wellington, to which the respected English business leader Abraham Hort, Senior, was sent from London to organize along London religious lines. The difficulties of life in early colonial New Zealand, together with historically high rates of intermarriage, made it hard to maintain strict religious observation in any of the new congregations.

Subsequent small waves of immigration were associated with the Hungarian uprising in 1956 and the attempts by HIAS (the Hebrew Immigration Assistance Society) to bring Jews here from the former Soviet Union. Most recently there has been a small influx from South Africa, most of whom settled in Auckland. A great many South Africans were from Lithuania.   A number of Israelis have also settled in New Zealand in recent years."

Jewish Communities were later established in AUKLAND and other centers.  Jews have actively collaborated in New Zealand public life and have occupied the highest positions including those of administrator, prime minister and chief justice.
Julius Vogel Sir Julius Vogel  (24 February 1835 – 12 March 1899) was the eighth Premier of New Zealand. His administration is best remembered for the issuing of bonds to fund railway construction and other public works. He was the first Jewish prime minister of New Zealand.   Benjamin Disraeli, of Jewish descent but Anglican, was Prime Minister of the United Kingdom contemporaneously to Vogel's premiership.
"Sir Julius Vogel, who served twice during the 1870s, was the only Premier (Prime Minister) to practice Judaism." "In this respect the most notable was Sir Julius Vogel, who at various times held the portfolios of colonial treasurer, commissioner for stamps and customs, and postmaster-general. He served as premier from 1874 to 1876, and held the office of agent-general in London from 1876 to 1881. He is best remembered for his vigorous policy of public works, by which the North Island was opened up. To him also are due the establishment of the San Francisco and New Zealand mail service, the completion of the London and New Zealand cable, the system of government life-insurance, and the creation of the Public Trust Offices."

Sir Dove Myer Robinson
June 15, 1901 in Sheffield, England
August 14, 1989 in Ackland, New Zealand

Sir Dove-Myer Robinson was Mayor of Auckland City from 1959 to 1965 and from 1968 to 1980, the longest tenure of any holder of the office. He was a colourful character and became affectionately known across New Zealand as "Robbie"

 Sir Arthur Mielziner Myers
(19 May 1868 – 9 October 1926)

Myers was a New Zealand politician and Mayor of Auckland from 1905 to 1909, and   member of the House of Representatives from 1910 to 1921, and a Cabinet Minister. Today he is remembered mainly for the public works constructed in Auckland during his term as Mayor, and partly from his donations, including Grafton Bridge and Myers Park..

John Phillip KeyCurrent Prime Minister of New Zealand, whose mother was Jewish.  Key was born in Auckland, New Zealand, to George Key (1914–1969) and Ruth Key (née Lazar; 1922–2000), on 9 August 1961. His father was an English immigrant and a veteran of the Spanish Civil War and World War II. Key and his two sisters were raised in a state house in the Christchurch suburb of Bryndwr, by his mother, an Austrian Jewish immigrant. Key is the third prime minister or premier of New Zealand to have Jewish ancestry, after Julius Vogel and

                                              Francis Bell.
                             March 31, 1851-March 13, 1936
Bell was born in Nelson, the eldest son of Sir Dillon Bell. His mother was Margaret Hort (who was Jewish, but became a Christian).  He  was a New Zealand lawyer and politician who served as the 20th Prime Minister of New Zealand from 10 to 30 May 1925. He was the first New Zealand-born prime minister, holding office in a caretaker capacity following the death of William Massey
The Jewish community, at first mainly English, was reinforced by immigrants from Eastern Europe from 1882 and Central Europe from 1933 at the start of Germany leading into WWII and onward.

The Jewish population of New Zealand in 1990 was 4,800.  People were living in
1. Wellington:  2,300.
2. Auckland:    2,350
3. Christchurch:    80
4. Dunedin:          60
5. Hastings:         50

"The largest centre of Jewish population in New Zealand is Auckland, which, with a population of around 1.1 million, is New Zealand’s largest city. New Zealand’s total population is 3.7 million. Three quarters of the resident population lives in the North Island. The self-identified Jewish population is around 4,700 (1996 census) which is 0.13% of the overall population. (Jews of the USA make up 2% of that population.)  Numbers have been higher (around 5 – 6,000) but many Jewish families, or young people, have moved to larger communities overseas (especially Australia)."  My neighbor in Israel was from Australia, so even those Jews had lost some to making Aliyah to Israel, but it has continued to grow.

With this, anti-Semitism is on the rise, even on these two small islands.
"
Anti-Semitism is increasing in New Zealand and those responsible need to better understand the implications of their actions, a Jewish leader says.
New Zealand Jewish Council president Stephen Goodman said hate speech towards Jews was particularly prevalent on social media.
"A lot of anti-Semitism comes out of ignorance and thinking this is a fashionable thing to do," Goodman said.
"I don't think that legislating really works. The real issue is education."
"Police have made contact with two men after anti-Semitic posters were placed around Queenstown Resort College.
A security camera image posted earlier on the Southern District Police Facebook page shows two men – one in dark glasses, camo pants and wearing a "Trump" t-shirt – entering the tertiary institute last week. The photo has since been removed from the police Facebook page."

"New Zealand and a few others stepped forward to lead the battle cry against Israel at the United Nations Security Council. That this resolution came about in the waning days of the Obama administration speaks volumes.  Israel and New Zealand are on relatively equal footing in terms of quality of life, modern conveniences, and social status.

New Zealand took a part in helping Israel to be re-established in 1948. They were one of the honorable nations who voted for the Partition Plan in 1947. There would be two nations, the plan offered – a Jewish one on about half the land. Yeah, we got the desert and the swamps, but never mind because we took lemons and made lemonade. We took desert and made it bloom; we took swamps and drained them. And an Arab one on about half the land (not including 2/3 of the land of “Palestine” that had already been given to the Jordanians).

According to the resolution sponsored, in part, by New Zealand, Israel has no legal right, no claim, to the land our forefathers walked, the place where they are buried, where they worshiped and where, to this day, we pray every day.
Have they since changed?"
There has been substantial assimilation, perhaps inevitable in a small diaspora community.
The 2006 census data gives the Jewish population as 6,858 out of the total New Zealand population of 4 million.

Netanyahu, Kerry and Iran:-About the Nuclear Iran Deal

Nadene Goldfoot

Netanyahu told his audience at the UN on October 1, 2015 about their deal with Iran, "If it becomes more dangerous in the years to come, the most important constraints will still be automatically lifted by 10 and by year 15." That meant nuclear bombs from Iran would be freed by 2025.  We are now only 6 years away, actually almost 5 years  from that point.  They would be lifted even more by 2030.  People with newborns will start worrying about compulsory Army registrations for their 16 year old sons in the USA.  It's already a fact in Israel.

You want to save the planet?  Don't you think A bombs are a big problem for land, sea, air and populations?  Look what happened at Hiroshima and Nagasaki!  USA has done 1032 tests, USSR 727, UK 88, France 217, China 47, India 3, Pakistan 2, North Korea 6.

Ayatolla Khamenei of Iran, the Supreme ruler

Supreme Leader of Iran, Ali Khamenei makes a speech after leading the Eid al-Fitr Prayer at Grand Prayer Grounds (Mossalla) in Tehran, Iran on June 5, 2019. Khamenei announced on Tuesday that "there will be no talks with the U.S. at any level" — remarks apparently meant to end all speculation about a possible U.S.-Iran meeting between the two countries' presidents at the U.N. later this month.
He continued.  This deal doesn't make peace more likely.  By fueling Iran's aggression with billions of dollars in sanctions relief, it makes war more likely.  Just look at what Iran has done in the last six months alone, since the framework agreement was announced in Lausanne.
1. Iran boosted its supply of devastating weapons to Syria.
2. Iran sent more soldiers of its Revolutionary Guard into Syria.

3. Iran sent thousands of Afghani and Pakistani Shi'ite fighters to Syria.
4. Iran did all this to prop up Assad's brutal regime.
5. Iran also shipped tons of weapons and ammunitions to the Houthi rebels in Yemen, including another shipment just two days ago.
6. Iran threatened to topple Jordan.

7. Iran's proxy, Hezbollah, smuggled into Lebanon SA-22 missiles to down our planes, and Yakhont cruise missiles to sink our ships.

8. Iran supplied Hezbollah with precision-guided surface-to surface missiles and attack drones so it can accurately hit any target in Israel.
9. Iran aided Hamas and Islamic Jihad in building armed drones in Gaza.

10. Iran also made clear its plans to open two new terror fronts against Israel, promising to arm Palestinians in the West Bank (PA) and sending its Revolutionary Guard generals to the Syrian side of the Golan Heights, from which its operatives recently fired rockets on northern Israel.  (That's war.)

Former President Ahmadinejad on missile to Israel
He reminds me so much of Haman, the Persian advisor to the king
who plotted and started to carry out a world-wide slaughter of
Jews because Mordecai, Queen Esther's uncle,  didn't bow to him.
Haman died in c 465 BCE, hung by the king along with his 7 sons.
Netanyahu explained, "Every few weeks, Iran and Hezbollah seat up new terror cells in cities throughout the world.  Unleashed and unmuzzled, Iran wil go on the prowl, devouring more and more prey.  In the wake of the nuclear deal, Iran is spending billions of dollars on weapons and satellites.  You think Iran is doing that to advance peace?

Recent clashes between Israel and Hezbollah on the Lebanese border have caused much speculation of a looming military confrontation between Israel, Hezbollah and Iran, which backs the militant group. The exchange of fire in early September 2019  followed the crashing of two reportedly Israeli drones in Beirut in late August. A spate of other drone strikes across the region in recent weeks, some against Iranian-backed militia in Iraq and Syria, have also been blamed on Israel.
He knew that some well-intentioned people sincerely believe that this deal is the best way to block Iran's path to the bomb.  The best of intentions don't prevent the worst outcomes.

Former Secretary of State John Kerry, Democrat,  admitted Wednesday, September 12, 2018,  that he’s met with top Iranian officials in hopes of salvaging the scrapped nuclear deal — as he slammed the Trump administration for trying to further “isolate” Iran.  "Before Trump’s decision in May to withdraw from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal — which had lifted some economic sanctions on Iran so long as Iran discontinued its pursuit of nuclear weapons — Kerry worked behind the scenes to preserve the pact, according to a May 4 report by the Boston Globe detailing the quiet lobbying efforts as described by anonymous sources." Don't you wonder who was behind his act?

"So as to announce some kind of agreement, the Obama administration released Iranian financial assets frozen since the 1970s when Iran held our embassy personnel hostage. A payment of $1.7 billion in non-US currency was made to sweeten the deal. Four hundred million dollars in various currencies was then delivered on pallets the same day our naval personnel who were being held hostages were released by Iran (Los Angeles Times, Sept 7, 2016). In spite of Kerry admitting earlier that some of this money could be used for terrorism, the Obama administration, desperate for a deal with Iran, any deal, went ahead anyway giving the mullahs millions of dollars (CNN, January 21, 2016)."

Remember when Netanyahu had flown 5,700 miles over from Israel to the UN in New York to speak about Iran gaining uranium and using it to attack Israel and the USA, the big and little Satans?

It was in August when Khamenei once again made his genoceidal intentions clear before Iran's top clerical body, the Assembly of Experts.  He pledged, "There will be no Israel in 25 years.."
70 years after the murder of 6,000,000 Jews, Iran's rulers promise to destroy Israel and murder the people.  Do you wonder why Netanyahu made such effort to speak to this world body?  What did our Democrats do when he spoke to our Senate?  They refused to attend.  One of our highest Democrats, when Netanyahu was announced then to speak in the UN, got up and left-and why?  To go out to lunch.

Let me be clear.  Iran is very aggressive in the Middle East and in terror around the world.  It is also building intercontinental ballistic missiles whose sole purpose is to carry nuclear warheads.  Iran already had missiles that could reach Israel in 2015.   So these intercontinental ballistic missiles that Iran is building are meant for the USA, Europe, for raining down mass destruction...anytime, anywhere.

When I moved to Israel in September 1980, Iran and Saudi Arabia were starting their own war.  "Iran-Iraq War, (1980–88), prolonged military conflict between Iran and Iraq during the 1980s. Open warfare began on September 22, 1980, when Iraqi armed forces invaded western Iran along the countries’ joint border, though Iraq claimed that the war had begun earlier that month, on September 4, when Iran shelled a number of border posts. Fighting was ended by a 1988 cease-fire, though the resumption of normal diplomatic relations and the withdrawal of troops did not take place until the signing of a formal peace agreement on August 16, 1990."  It had lasted so long that little children were being used as soldiers.

Netanyahu's message to the rulers of Iran:

Your plan to destroy Israel will fail.  Israel will not permit any force on earth to threaten its future.

Today Iran is just as bad.  They were caught sneaking M302 rocket/ missiles to Gaza from Iran by ship.  This was made known through German intelligence.

Humanity's Gene for Competition: Israel's Election

Nadene Goldfoot

Competition in football, U of Oregon and Oregon State
Mankind has been competing with each other since Cain and Abel.  Kings have killed family members competing for power.  We are still doing it with our wars, and through elections in Democratic societies.

Israel's April 9, 2019 election is a perfect example.  They stand alone, the smallest country in the world no bigger than the smallest state in the USA, yet they compete, man to man.  The 4 time winner as Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, had won again for the 5th time being most popular and bringing on more security for his populace,  had won  and was told to form a governing coalition.  His party, Likud (center right) had 35 seats in the 120 seat Knesset. It's major competitor, the Blue and White Party, also had 35 seats but less votes than Likud.   35 + 35=70 seats.  That's one way to look at the election.

Knesset in Jerusalem
The other way is that overall, the center-right and right-wing parties won 55% of the vote.  The center left and left parties won 36%.  55 + 36=91% votes.  100%-91%=9%.  Nine percent of the votes left went to Arab parties that traditionally have refused to join any governing coalition.  Israel is a Jewish country created as a haven, a safe place to live in a world that hasn't accepted them.  It is the 2nd creation of Israel, land of Kings Saul, David and Solomon  who died in 920 BCE,  till 721 BCE and a creation of our hopes and dreams in that southern part of Israel which became Judah, the name of our Jewish religion which was verified and sanctified by Moses who lived from 1391-1271 BCE.

Competition had harmed Israel back then with the Northern part of the State and the Southern part which caused the split of this tiny piece of land.  Then the Northern parts were attacked by the Assyrians who took most of them away, never to be seen or heard from again, up until now, that is.

We're finding out that they are turning up as the Pashtun people of Afghanistan and Pakistan, again, competitors with each other, even in their adopted religion, Islam.

The Arab parties of Israel's 20% Arab population show where many of them stand towards Israel.

There is not one Arab party that accepts Israel's right to exist.

Arab parties are so extreme that they cannot be considered for any                                        governing coalition.

1. There were Arab politicians newly elected only yesterday that have written odes to terrorist murderers on Facebook pages.  Is that what drew votes to them, I ask?
2.  Arab lawmakers were elected that have met with terror kingpins.  That gives power to the terrorists.
3. Arab lawmakers routinely support the Palestinian war against Israel and express support for Hamas terrorism.

"The irony is that one of the leaders of an Arab party who actually hates Jews calls Israel a racist and Apartheid state, yet he is a free rich Arab who has a seat in the Knesset while trash talking us everyday, spewing Jew hatred non-stop and has the full right to vote as much as us racist Apartheid inducing right wing & left wing Jews do.."..from a frustrated Jewish Israeli.

Druze in IDF

There is a Muslim group who are unique, keeping to themselves, who were the
first to insist on being a part of the IDF.  Israel gave Muslims a break by not
expecting them to belong and fight other Muslims.  They are as nationalistic
as any Jew.  I personally met one young lady in Portland, on a tour with another
male Jewish Israeli, and was very impressed with her.  At the time, I just wished
other Jewish Portlanders had half the zeal that she did for Israel.

It is not racist for Israelis NOT to want Hamas supporters and champions of terrorist murderers in the Israeli government ----or receiving security briefings from the military and intelligence services.  It is rational.

Benyamin Netanyahu

Benny Gantz

The competitor of PM Benyamin Netanyahu is" General Benny Gantz.  Benjamin Gantz (Hebrew: בִּנְיָמִין "בֵּנִי" גַּנְץ; born 9 June 1959) is an Israeli politician. He served as the 20th Chief of General Staff of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) from 2011 to 2015.
In December 2018, he established a new political party named Israel Resilience. The party later allied itself with Telem and Yesh Atid to form Blue and White (HebrewKaḥol Lavan), the colours of the Israeli national flag.
Gantz's Blue and White party platform includes introducing prime ministerial term limits, barring indicted politicians from serving in the Knesset, amending the nation-state law to include Israeli minorities, limiting the power of the Chief Rabbinate of Israel over marriages, investing in early education, expanding health care, and re-entering negotiations with the Palestinian Authority for a peace agreement. He is in agreement with Netanyahu about security.

Netanyahu is the only person capable of forming a government.  It remains to be
seen if that will happen, but Gantz cannot form a government, and he is slowly
coming to terms with this unalterable reality.

Avigdor Liberman

However, Netanyahu was prevented from forming a coalition government by
Avigdor Liberman.  He the former Defense Minister and head of the small
Israel Beitenu Party.  He refused to join the coalition.  His party won 5 seats
in April and so held the potential majority of 65 seats out of 120.  Now by
refusal, Netanyahu cannot form a governing majority.

The 2 men have a 30 year relationship that has known its ups and downs
Most Israelis believe that Lieberman was motivated by hatred of Netanyahu.
This is competition.  Liberman says he opposes the ultra-Orthodox parties
that form the core of the Likud's natural coalition partners.  The general public
and the Israeli commentariat do not believe his claim.

He's now in the position with power and can block Netanyahu from forming
a government.  Netanyahu and the ultra-Orthodox parties were willing to
accept his demands.  Even with this win, Lieberman still refused to make a deal.
That demonstrates that his goal is to destroy Netanyahu politically.  It even
outweighs any rational calculations.

Outcome to this date:  Netanyahu did not lose.
                                 Gantz did not win.
Netanyahu is in position as a winner but cannot build
                                 a majority coalition.

This deadlock is electoral, not ideological.  Liberman's defection from
the Right has denied it a governing majority.  The Right is still very much the
majority in Israel.

The Jewish lawmakers in the Knesset support applying Israeli law over the
Jordan Valley as Netanyahu suggested.  A large majority (55-44) of Jewish
lawmakers also support applying Israeli to other parts of Judea and Samaria.

There must be a gene in man's genetic make-up that causes the desire for
competition.  It was put there to continue to improve life.  Man would have
remained in caves had there not been a challenge to their living in them.  Some
people are more competitive than others.  Some cannot lose any type of game,

President Rivlin

It's not about an individual.  It's about Israel's survival.  President Rivlin is in a
hard place now.  What will Netanyahu be able to do?  "The president's most important role, in practice, is to help lead the process of forming a government. Israel's electoral system and fractured political landscape make it all but impossible for one party to govern alone, let alone win an outright majority of Knesset seats. After each election, the president consults with party leaders to determine who is most likely to command a majority in the Knesset."
