Islam and ISIS-Partners or Enemies Part IV

Nadene Goldfoot

Al-Qaeda, from which Baghdadi was a leader

It started in 2003 when the USA- led invasion into Iraq started as far as Baghdadi is concerned.  It was like striking the hornet's nest.  He now has 12,000 foreigners from 74 countries fighting with him as his terrorists. His army of terrorists has been estimated to anywhere from 10,000 to 30,000 strong.

Amnesty International, a London-based rights group,  is a group that has been reporting about ISIS.  They find that IS is trying to wipe out ethnic and religious minorities with mass killings that come under today's war crimes.  This is exactly what the neighbors of Israel through the Palestinians have been trying to do to them for the past 65 years, I note. Where has Amnesty been hiding?  Oh yes, they usually find fault with Israel somehow and have taken the side of the Palestinians who were not being backed by the USA like Israel. They seem to have ignored the fact that Israel was created legally through the League of Nations and then the United Nations and were attacked constantly by the Palestinian Arabs who ignored the fact.

ISIS is very obvious in what they are doing, even to taking videos of their acts in order to scare or impress others.  Their bloodiest act has been beheadings.  They also are ignoring the fact that Syria and Iraq were created by the same legal bodies of the League of Nations at the end of WWI, and have been  slaughtering people in creating a caliphate for Baghdadi.

Communities of Assyrian Christians, Yazidis, Turkmen and Shabaks are the brunt of IS attacks and risk being decimated off the face of the earth.  In June IS tried to do just this in the northern and western parts of the Syria and Iraq.  This is ethnic cleansing; something the Nazis were doing to Jews.

Amnesty took accounts from survivors of their massacres who described how males up to the age of 12  had been rounded up and shot dead while the women and children under 12 were abducted.  The women are forced to become concubines or wives of the terrorists.  The children are trained to become terrorists.

The government of Saudi Arabia have arrested 88 terrorists suspects so far for being members of IS.

The killing of innocent non-combatants is forbidden in the Qur'an.  In Malik's Muwatta, Kitab al-Jihad it says that Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, the first Caliph, gave these instructions to his armies:  "I instruct you in 10 matters:  Do not kill women, children, the old, or the infirm.  Do not cut down fruit-bearing trees.  Do not destroy any town."   This is found in the Sunni tradition.   Actually, you can find the much of the same laws in the Torah  in Deuteronomy 20, when Israel goes to war. and much of the rest of Deuteronomy. Islam does contain much that is also found in other places of Judaic writings, Christianity and some Zoroastrianism.

Invasion of Banu Qurayzah:  Attacking the Jewish Tribe

Muhammad's day (570-632) in Arabia was a pagan one.  Blood feuds happened all the time.  People were hardened and unyielding like the desert they grew up on.  Women were chattel.  Girls as young as 7 or 8 were married off and female infanticide was common because women were thought of as a financial liability.  Muhammad came from the tribe of Quraysh who lived in Mecca, the center of trade and pilgrimage.  The local shrine was the Ka'bah which held many pagan idols with the main one being Hubal.  Other idols sat in it as well identifying with trees and stones near the Ka'bah.  One god, 'Allah" could have been a tribal god of the Quraysh.  There were goddesses as well like al-Lat and al Uzza.  The Quraysh tribe had a lot of influence.  They rejected Muhammad and his teachings in the beginning.  He was not playing to a willing audience.

Jews were also living in Arabia.  Prominent Jewish tribes were living in Yemen and in the Khaybar oasis, 100 miles north of Medina.  Three Jewish were also in Medina;  the Banu Qaynuqa, Banu Nadir, and Banu Qurayzah.  In Mecca were 3 Jewish clans.  So Muhammad, who was a trader, did come into contact with Jews.

Here IS has killed innocent journalists and an aid worker among many others.  They were not soldiers.  They were not physically attacking IS.  How can Baghdadi justify what he has done?

Terrorism (hirabah) is forbidden in Islamic law.  This comes under the same listing in Sharia law as brigandage, highway robbery and extortion rackets.  Using fear and coercion in public places for money or power is forbidden.  This comes under the law found in Surah al-Ma'ida 5:33-34.  Sherman Jackson, Muslim legal scholar wrote that "anyone who disturbs free passage in the streets and renders them unsafe to travel, striving to spread corruption in the land by taking money, killing people or violating what G-d has made it unlawful to violate is guilty of hirabah.  This was defined by the Spanish Maliki jurist Ibn Abd al-Barr (d.464/1070).

Sneak attacks are forbidden Muslim commanders must give the enemy fair warning that war is imminent.  Muhammad one time gave 4 months notice.
From (Al-Tirmidhi)  Muhammad said,"Do not be people without minds of your own, saying that if others treat you well you will treat them well, and that if they do wrong you will do wrong to them.  Instead, accustom yourselves to do good if people do good and not to do wrong (even) if they do evil."  This is very much like the Jewish Golden Rule of "Don't do to others what you would not want done to you."  Also, from the Talmud on Shabbat 31 a, from Hillel:   "That which is hateful to you, do not do to your fellow. That is the whole Torah; the rest is the explanation; go and learn it.

On July 8th, ISIS came out with their own magazine, Dabiq, which is the name of a Syrian city that was prominent in past history of the 1500's when the Mamluks held the last caliphate.  The Mamluks were slaves who ruled Egypt from 1250 to 1517 and drove out the Crusaders.  Qalawun controlled Syria.     The title has eschatological connections with the Islamic belief of the End times, or Malahim. In it they warn that Armageddon is coming from them to the USA and the West.

 "Abu Hurayrah, companion to the Prophet, reported in his Hadith that Allah’s Messenger, the Prophet said;
"The Final Hour (of history) will not be established until the Romans (seen as USA and the West) land at either al-A’maq or at Dabiq (two places along the current Syria/ Turkey border). Then an army from al-Madinah of the best people on the earth at that time will leave for them."

Therefore, this connects their motivation to religion and not just for political gains such as Hitler seemed to have.  The magazine is very graphic with horrible pictures of deaths and also of Obama and John McCain being targeted.

Update: 9/18/14 Australia has been threatened with beheadings of innocents.* (see reference below)
