Looking Back At Portland , Oregon from 1870-1880 And a Growing Anti-Semitism and Racial Segregation Developing

 Nadene Goldfoot

The early Pioneer Jews  tended to be a different kind of person—independent-minded, ready to leave the community they knew, more connected to natural beauty than, say, the Jews who declined to leave urban centers of Philadelphia and New York for an unknown life among the evergreens and people who at the time were called Indians.

                                       Aaron Meier

Meier & Frank: Founded earlier in 1857 by Aaron Meier, the firm expanded significantly during the 1870s, officially adopting the name Meier & Frank Co. in 1873 when Emil Frank joined as a partner. He hired Emil Frank (1845–1898) in 1870 and Emil's younger brother Sigmund Frank (1850–1910) in 1872. A year later, Emil Frank became Meier's partner, and the store became known as "Meier & Frank". In 1878, the great Portland fire destroyed 20 downtown blocks, including the store, which was immediately rebuilt.

The Great Fire of 1873 was a major fire which swept through the downtown of Portland, Oregon on August 2, 1873, destroying twenty-two blocks on the west side of the Willamette River, including along Yamhill and Morrison Streets. A mix of mansions, tenements, and commercial property was destroyed. Many businesses were not insured, and many others were only partially insured.

The city "shunned" financial aid offered from San Francisco and the East Coast, and instead used local resources. Rebuilding was delayed by the Panic of 1873, then was in "full swing" by 1878.

The Panic of 1873 struck Portland, Oregon, during a vulnerable period, compounding the devastation of the Great Fire of August 2, 1873. The national economic collapse halted regional railroad expansion, ruined local magnate Ben Holladay, delayed downtown rebuilding for years, and intensified anti-Chinese social tensions.  The economic collapse of 1873, known as the Panic of 1873, was a severe financial crisis that triggered a multi-year global depression. It began on September 18, 1873, when the prominent investment banking firm Jay Cooke & Company went bankrupt due to overextended investments in railroad construction. The collapse led to a 10-day shutdown of the New York Stock Exchange and a wave of bank runs nationwide.

In 1869, a splinter group of Prussian immigrant Jews established the more conservative congregation Avahai Shalom in Portland, contrasting with the established Beth Israel, which developed into a reform congregation. During those days, ,the congregation rented spaces (such as rooms on SW Sixth Street between Oak and Pine) rather than constructing a dedicated brick building.New Immigrant Tides: During the 1870s, an influx of Polish and Prussian Jews arrived, bringing more traditional or Orthodox practices to the established Reform Jewish community community.

  •
  •  Bernard Goldsmith, a Bavarian Jewish immigrant to Oregon who fought as a cavalry lieutenant in the state's Indian Wars, was elected as the 19th mayor of Portland, serving from 1869 until 1871. Prior to his political involvement, Goldsmith had operated a dry good store with his brothers, and became one of Portland's financial elite; he was involved in local wheat shipping business, railroads, and the construction of the locks at Willamette Falls in Oregon City.
  • His accomplishments include adding downtown park blocks and public squares to the city's domain, and in 1871, purchasing 40 wooded acres in the hills above downtown Portland, which would become the nucleus of what is now Washington Park. The $32,000 price drew considerable criticism. Goldsmith was the driving force behind the building of locks to navigate around the Willamette River falls across from Oregon City, which allowed boats to travel from the Pacific Ocean to Eugene, Oregon, cutting the cost of shipping Willamette Valley goods to Portland by half. Goldsmith and his associates obtained a $200,000 legislative grant from the state of Oregon for the project; when cost estimates more than doubled, Goldsmith paid an additional $200,000 out of his pocket.  He was 68 years old at the time of his death in 1901.
                     faces of emancipation:  1860-1880
  • State Exclusion Laws: Oregon's state constitution explicitly banned Black individuals from residing in or holding property in the state upon admission in 1859, a racist clause left in the text until 1927. Voting Rights Conflict: While the ratification of the 15th Amendment granted Black men the right to vote nationally in 1870, Oregon voters had rejected the amendment, and the state refused to officially ratify it for nearly another century. Delayed Acceptance: Local governance and societal norms treated Black arrivals as unwelcome interlopers despite federal overrides. Segregated Schools: Public education was heavily segregated; Portland routinely assigned Black and mixed-race children to separate, underfunded educational facilities. Social Isolation: Institutionalized prejudice limited Black residents from full participation in civic, social, and political life outside of their concentrated enclaves. Economic and Labor Constraints.  Job Channeling: Black workers were systematically excluded from professional, managerial, and skilled trades, restricted instead to low-wage service, domestic, or manual labor.  Railroad and Hospitality Work: As transcontinental rail lines and large commercial spaces expanded toward the 1880s, Black labor was funneled into visible service roles (such as waiters and porters) that offered little upward mobility.
  • Anxiety Over Assimilation: Established Jewish community leaders sometimes worried that the distinct Old World customs of newer immigrants might provoke external prejudices;  though overt, organized local anti-Semitism had not yet taken root in public Portland life during this era.  It have have well been the start.
  • Mutual Aid: Organizations like the Hebrew Benevolent Association and the First Hebrew Ladies Benevolent Society formed to care for community members.

  • Between 1870 and 1880, Portland's Chinese population grew rapidly from roughly 700 to 2,500 residents. Centered near the Willamette River waterfront, the community expanded its economic footprint and transitioned from a transient bachelor society into a more permanent urban enclave despite rising regional labor hostility.  The railroads provided especially important benefits for the Chinese in the American West, giving them a source of income and directing Chinese migration throughout the region. The era of transcontinental railroad construction, from 1865 through the 1880s, also stimulated the building of regional spurs. In this way, Cantonese-Chinese not only worked their way across the land, but they also were introduced to new destinations.

In Oregon, Cantonese-Chinese migrated to and settled in eastern Oregon, on the Oregon Coast, and in the Willamette Valley. Commercial agriculture, lumbering, fisheries, and canneries provided jobs for many. Other employment opportunities in white American society included jobs in domestic service (e.g., as cooks, gardeners, houseboys, and nannies), light manufacturing, truck gardening, hand laundries, cafes and restaurants, and nurseries.

The number of Chinese in Oregon grew dramatically after the mid-1860s. By 1870, their numbers were distributed unevenly across southwest Oregon, especially in Josephine and Jackson Counties; the central Willamette Valley, in Lane, Benton, Linn, and Marion Counties and some in Polk and Yamhill Counties; the northern Willamette Valley, in Multnomah, Clackamas, and Washington.

It's Not Easy Peasy Creating A Country

Squatters Shacks along the Willamette River , Portland, Oregon.  People sitting on land without paying for it:  1930

To have a country, land can't just fill up with squatters.  Otherwise, it that were true, there never would be a United States, or an Oregon.  What's a squatter?  Someone in our Oregon history, and I imagine in states as well.

  • In the 1840s, Oregon Country was governed by an unregulated "Squatter Democracy". As the US and Britain contested the region, the foundational land laws were largely defined by squatters—settlers who simply occupied the land without legal title before preemption acts eventually allowed them to secure their claims.
Bedouins in Palestine, Nomads with a permanent address: Deals had been made with the new Jewish government for the Bedouins of the south. Nomads are usually always on the move whereas squatters just sat there.  Bedouin refers to historically nomadic Arab tribes inhabiting the desert regions of the Arabian Peninsula, North Africa, the Levant, and Mesopotamia. Derived from the Arabic word badawÄ« (meaning "desert-dweller"), the term represents a traditional, pastoralist way of life rather than a distinct ethnic group.

  • The land of Palestine did fill up with many squatters who traveled back and forth, especially on camels.  Most were from Syria and later were called Syrian Palestinians, not being Bedouins.   Other Arabs came to the land in 1880 when they saw Jews coming in and building Tel Aviv, etc.  They were paid with money and that enticed even more Arabs to join the crews. At that time they had no inducement to have their own state.  They were all from other countries close by.
  • Historical Shifts: there was  time when the Brits invited Arabs into the country and kept Jews out--and this was after the Jewish Homeland was decided upon.
  •  For decades in Oregon, removing unauthorized occupants required a slow, civil lawsuit known as ejectment. The rules were tightened significantly with Oregon House Bill 3522, which allowed landlords and homeowners to use standard eviction procedures to remove unauthorized occupants quickly. Many informal, unauthorized occupations were handled privately by landowners or frontier settlers rather than through formal courts. Throughout Oregon’s history, the handling of squatters has varied: Pioneer Era: In the mid-1800s, early settlements like Portland were practically "squatter's paradises" fueled by massive land claims and the Donation Land Act. In the early days, disputes were often settled by force or informal claim associations. In coming back to Eretz Yisrael, Jews found Arab squatters, like  there were squatters in Oregon.  There were a few land-owners who had people working the land, squatters and such.  The land-owners were only too happy to be overpaid for the land they were being taxed for and could not make a living on, and so this money relieved them and they headed for Damascus and Paris for the good life.  They had money!!!
Over 3,000 years ago of the 11th century BCE or 1050 BCE, King Saul of the tribe of Benjamin ruled Israel-his enemy were the Philistines
  • The history of Israel goes back almost 4,000 years.  The first organized governing power in those days were kings,, and Israel's first king was Saul.  King David was 2nd,who ruled by 1010 BCE and died in 970 BCE.  He had been Saul's armor-bearer at age 25, and was a good friend of his son, Jonathan-and after showing his military strengths during a war with the Philistines, became husband of Saul's daughter, Michal.  King Solomon, David's son, died in 920 BCE which caused a rift or division of the 12 statehoods they had created with the Northern 10 being swept away after their king Hoshea of Israel died in 721 BCE.  The 2 southern states, Judea and Benjamin lost their last King Zedekiah in 586 BCE.  They united sometime later, those who found each other again, and remained with or without permission from other ruling parties,, but had filled Jerusalem at the turn of the millennium.  By 70 CE, the Romans were ruling and burned the city down, remaking it into a Roman town.  Jews were starved to death or slaughtered, with many escaping while others were caught and used as slaves.  Romans stole all the gold and silver out of the

Temple, forcing slaves to carry all back to Rome as shown on the Arch of Titus.  Thanks, Titus for having this for proof of the history.  Jews were told that returning to Jerusalem meant death, and so they scattered to the ends of the earth, near and far, suffering mostly in the hands of strangers.  Since some wound up in Rome, as prisoners, it was a good place to remain--and some did.  Others went to what later became Germany.  Later yet, Poland and others were inviting them to their country because it was known they could help the kings with finances, trading, etc, they could add, subtract, read and write and most people couldn't.  Then the countries turned on them, jealous, whatnot....and it was 1920.
  • WWI had started in 1914, and Jews had been promised to have the land they were kept away from for all those years...The Jewish Homeland.  Then Britain was offered such a deal they couldn't resist and gave away 80% of it to an Arabian prince who, not being first in line in his own homeland, wanted land with people to rule over, Prince Abdullah; who then got Transjordan.  The Jews, who had spent years since 2014 speaking and signing with heads of state, got the remaining 20%. And that's how Israel's birth development began once again.  They bought land.  They crossed all the T's and dotted all the i's and made it legal.  It went through all the channels of the United Nations of that day, the League of Nations besides the United Nations.
  • Chaim Weizmann (1874-1952) , Israeli statesman, biochemist, and Zionist leader who served as president of the Zionist Organization and later as the first president of Israel had helped England win the war. In 1917, he brought about the Balfour Declaration.

  •  He met with Emir Feisal; who agreed with him about Jews entering the land. Emir Feisal (Feisal, ibn Hussein)1885-1933) was the son of Sharif Hussein bin Ali of Mecca, the leader of the Arab Revolt against Turkey. He was a military commander who later became the King of Syria and Iraq.  By 1920 Weizmann mobilized resources for constructive work in Palestine. By 1929 there were Arab riots in the streets scared by another Arab who wanted more power,

  • Hajj Mohammed Amin el-Husseini (1893-1974), appointed mufti of Jerusalem and head of he Supreme Moslem Council, kind of over-powering Feisal.  Who chose him?  A Jewish man who was the only Jew in government then:  Sir Herbert Samuel.  He knew nothing about the Arabs, about the rioting going on against Jews.  Husseini assisted Hitler and was largely responsible for the liquidation of the Jews in the Moslem areas of Bosnia.  In 1946 he escaped to Egypt.  After 1948 he set p a short-lived "Palestine Government" in Gaza and later on in Cairo.
Avraham (Yair) Stern of the Stern Group (1907-1942) Nationalistic Defense leader the group, Irgun Tzevai Leumi; and left it because they didn't want to attack British acts against Jews in WWII.  He then formed underground group, Lohame Herut Israel who Brits called the Stern Gang who carried out acts of sabotage, killed by British police when only 35 years old (Britain held 30 year mandate over Palestine) while being arrested.  My 3rd cousin, Stanley, had became the group's Chief of Intelligence.

  • Jews have been on the defense ever since.  Was it worth coming over to the Middle East from Eastern Europe?  Yes, spiritually;  culturally, it was the boost they needed to survive such hatred of them in the world.  Their candle, so to speak, WAS LIT with smelling the air, flowers,, orange blossoms, and knowing that this was where their ancestors lived and breathed and developed their morality.  And so this is the way we all feel upon making Aliyah to Israel today.

    Portland, Oregon Has ICE

     Nadene Goldfoot

On January 8th a few weeks ago, PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Federal immigration officers shot and wounded two people in a vehicle outside a hospital in Portland, Oregon, on Thursday, a day after an officer shot and killed a driver in Minnesota, authorities said.

The Department of Homeland Security described the vehicle's passenger as "a Venezuelan illegal alien affiliated with the transnational Tren de Aragua prostitution ring" who had been involved in a recent shooting in Portland. When agents identified themselves to the vehicle occupants Thursday afternoon, the driver tried to run them over, the department said in a written statement.

Yes, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) still operates a field office and detention facility in Portland, Oregon, specifically located in the South Waterfront area near S Bancroft Street. Despite being a "sanctuary city" and experiencing frequent, ongoing protests and attempts to block the facility, federal law allows ICE to continue operations and enforcement actions in the city.

    • Location: The facility is located in South Portland, near S Bancroft Street.
    • Operations: The office is used for processing, detaining, and interviewing individuals, with operations continuing despite sustained public opposition.
    • Recent Events: As of January 2026, the facility remains a flashpoint for protests, with significant demonstrations, clashes with federal agents, and arrests occurring near the site.
    • Legal Status: While Portland is a sanctuary city, federal, state, and local law dictates that federal agencies can operate and conduct enforcement actions, according to the City of Portland, Oregon (.gov).
GERMANY: 1934 BLOOD PURGE. Steel-helmeted and fully armed men outside the headquarters of the Berlin Sturm Abteilung (stormtroopers) on 30 June 1934, hours before the 'blood purge.'
    • We have created our own Stormtroopers of WWII, by the way.  Look at how  people have been treated in Minnesota.  Did their RN have a chance?  These fearful now brazen hired thugs are seeming to really take to the job. They see Mexicans, all Mexicans now, not just possible people here illegally, like Nazis seeing my people, Jews that need to be extinguished from our country back in the 30's and worse in the 40's.

Age Old Hatred Of Jews Showed Up in Jackson, Mississippi In Burning Oldest Synagogue Down

     Nadene Goldfoot

This photo shows damage to the Beth Israel Congregation synagogue library from a fire that occurred hours earlier on Saturday, Jan. 10, 2026, in Jackson, Mississippi. Credit: Courtesy of Beth Israel Congregation.  This makes me sick.  Just recently I had to move into Assisted Living and had to give up some precious books of mine for the sake of needing more room.  I had them deposited in our synagogue.  Beth Israel probably also held some very special Jewish books now up in flames.

Mississippi's oldest and Jackson's only synagogue was the object of an arson attack.  "A suspect was in custody and charged with arson and accused of setting the Saturday morning fire. It’s not the first time the Beth Israel house of worship has been attacked."

Beth Israel Synagogue in Portland, Oregon, also Reformed.

Investigators have not yet determined a motive for the fire, which remains under investigation, but it comes amid a wave of antisemitic attacks in recent years.

I certainly would call this a hate crime.  Any time a synagogue is purposely set on fire, it's on purpose, especially when the culprit is caught on camera in action setting the fire.  What's to question, hem and haw about?

The synagogue was burnt down to ashes in areas.  Do you think the congregation is happy about it?  Do you think, G-d forbid, that the congregants did it?

Beth Israel Congregation in Portland, Oregon, founded in 1858.

The Beth Israel Congregation in Jackson, Mississippi, founded in 1860, is the largest and only Jewish synagogue in the city. It is a Reform Jewish congregation that has played a significant role in both the local community and the American Civil Rights Movement.

    • Founding and Early Years: The congregation was organized in 1860 by Jewish immigrants, primarily of German background. In 1867, they built the first synagogue in Mississippi, a modest wood-frame schoolhouse that also served as a place of worship. After this building was destroyed by fire in 1874, a new brick structure was erected on the same site in 1875.
    • Civil Rights Era and Bombings: During the 1960s, Beth Israel became known for its advocacy for civil rights and integration. This stance made the synagogue and its rabbi, Perry Nussbaum, targets of white supremacists. In September 1967, the Ku Klux Klan bombed the temple, causing extensive damage. Two months later, Rabbi Nussbaum's home was also bombed, though he and his wife were unharmed. These events galvanized some in the white community to realize that resistance to integration had gone too far.
    • Recent Events: The synagogue, currently located at 5315 Old Canton Road, was recently damaged by an arson fire on January 10, 2026. Authorities arrested a suspect, and the incident is being investigated as a potential hate crime/domestic terrorism, adding to fears about rising antisemitism.
    • The congregation has received an outpouring of support from other faith communities in Jackson, with several churches offering their spaces for worship while the synagogue assesses the damage and plans to rebuild. The community remains committed to its mission of Tikkun Olam (repairing the world) and looks forward to continuing its long history in Jackson.
    • As of a 2021 report from the Institute of Southern Jewish Life (ISJL)Beth Israel Congregation, the city's only synagogue, had approximately 170 member households.
    • The overall Jewish population in the state of Mississippi was estimated to be around 2,910 in 2024, with Jackson having the largest community.
    • The Jewish population in Jackson and the rest of Mississippi has been steadily declining for decades as younger generations often leave for college and do not return to take over family businesses in the area.
The Synagogue's security camera caught the person splashing a liquid inside before it caught fire.  The predawn fire Saturday reduced the Beth Israel Congregation’s library and administrative offices to charred ruins and left smoke damage throughout the building. The destruction occurred in the same part of the building that was damaged when Ku Klux Klan members bombed the temple in 1967 because of the rabbi’s outspoken support of civil rights.

Local and federal law enforcement made an arrest Saturday night after the suspect was found at a Jackson hospital with burns that were not life-threatening, said Charles Felton, a chief investigator with the Jackson Fire Department.

The fire was reported shortly after 3 a.m. Saturday, and firefighters extinguished it before sunrise. No congregants or firefighters were injured.
