Jewish Students Learning What At Columbia University ?

 Nadene Goldfoot

What should be the most highly educated students attending Columbia University is turning out to show the world they have the worst instructors, professors and students instead.  Look whose philosophy has taken over the school !  They haven't done any research nor have they understood anything about Gaza and what's happening to their politics, and that's okay for the general public, but not for a university !!!

Columbia University has a long history with Jewish students, including instances of both inclusivity and discrimination. While the university's early years saw relative openness to Jewish students, the 20th century witnessed discriminatory practices, including limits on Jewish admissions. Today, Columbia has a strong Jewish presence with a vibrant Hillel chapter and a dedicated Jewish center. However, the university has also faced accusations of antisemitism, particularly in recent years, related to the Israel-Palestine conflict. Thus, the Palestinians on campus demonstrating.

                               Columbia University

Columbia started off giving fairness to Jews. Unlike many Ivy League institutions, Columbia did not restrict its student body to Christian students and had Jewish graduates as early as the 1770s. Columbia had a notable collection of Hebrew books and scholars early on, placing it among the top institutions for Judaica.  Despite its relative openness, Columbia faced challenges in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, including pressure to limit Jewish admissions and instances of discrimination because there was much anti-Semitism in the world leading to the Holocaust.  In 1920, Columbia University had a 40% Jewish enrollment rate according to Oliver Pollak. Around this time, Columbia imposed quotas on Jewish students in restrict the number of Jews, a practice that quickly expanded to many other prominent American universities.

My father's 1st cousin, Gaulda Jermulowske, received her Masters at Columbia in social work.  Gaulda (1916-1999) was from Portland, Oregon.  We were very proud of her.  Her undergraduate work was by graduating Reed College in Portland.

According to Inside Higher Ed, the Jewish student population at Columbia is around 22.3%, indicating a large drop because of these anti-Semitic events but still a  significant Jewish presence on campus.  Jewish population in the USA is very small, only 2% of the population.

The university was sued by Jewish students which said that in the university “mobs of pro-Hamas students and faculty march by the hundreds shouting vile antisemitic slogans, including calls to genocide.”

It's hard to accept that there remains this constant hatred of Jews, either in the Middle East or in the USA.  Our calling card says:  "TO LIFE !"  Our parents insist on our education and doing our best in it;  and many favor either law or comedy;   We even applauded the Golden Rule-created by  Hillel-a man a  building was named for at Columbia, by the way with Jews saying it in the negative form of "Don't do to others what you wouldn't want done to you...."  Hillel was Jewish, born in Babylon in the 1st century BCE (BC) to others) , called, "The Elder."

People Of The Book Of Laws Against The Lawless

 Nadene Goldfoot

Like it or not, the reason Judaism exists is that Moses gave us 613 laws he compiled from G-d over 40 years of embarking on an Exodus that we promised to follow having to do with our relationship with others to be fair and honest as we would expect others to treat us.  The first 10 laws were just the beginning.  We had a lot to learn  from experiences we gathered while on this Exodus.  After all, this took place in about from 1311 BCE to 1271 BCE;  3,415 years ago.

                                                       The land of Goshen

We went home, Moses passing away on the Exodus and Joshua taking over the leading to Canaan, where our ancestors had been living.   Jacob's family of 12 sons had grown into 12 tribes that had gone to Egypt during a drought when nothing grew.  The Pharaoh was pleased with Joseph and had made him his Viceroy (a royal official who ruled a province or country as the representative of a king or monarch).  Joseph and his family upon arriving were then given land to live upon in the north;  Goshen, a part of Egypt, as grazing land for their sheep.  Evidently, Joseph lived at the time of the Hyksos domination of Egypt between the 18th to 16th centuries BCE.

Our ancestors, the Israelites, were not an aggressive people.  They were imbued with legalities of how to behave, but they had learned how to protect themselves when being attacked.  They had learned on their own without Moses or Joshua about how to continue to live in a country as slaves who had to work without any rest for 400 years before Moses ever appeared on the scene and brought about their freedom.  They had learned to use their minds and had learned skills as slaves.

Every country they have turned to when looking for permanent homes have turned against them in some violent manner out of jealousy, envy, finding them non-compliant in wanting to follow their own religious laws and sticking to their own.  To them, it must have been a slap in the face as saying that their ways were not as good as the Israelite ways.

Law.  Many Jews have turned to law as a profession.  According to the American Bar Association, there are approximately 1.3 million lawyers in the United States, and while an exact number of Jewish lawyers isn't readily available, historical data suggests a disproportionately high percentage of lawyers in the US are Jewish, with estimates placing them at around 20% of the legal profession in the late 1960s, which was significantly higher than the overall Jewish population at the time.  The Jews make up only 0.5% (2%)  of the USA's total population today. The largest group are the Reformed.

According to the Israeli Bar Association, there are nearly 90,000 registered lawyers in Israel, with the vast majority being Jewish, as the Jewish population constitutes the overwhelming majority of Israel's citizens (80%); however, an exact percentage of Jewish lawyers is not readily available due to the sensitive nature of tracking religious demographics within the legal profession.

Our Golden Rule Standard is: The Jewish Golden Rule is "love your neighbor as yourself" and appears in the Torah in Leviticus 19:18: The Golden Rule is also known as Lev HaTorah. It's a principle that's also found in many other major religions. The Golden Rule is a commandment that focuses on social cohesion among Israelites. It's also a rule of reciprocal altruism that includes the idea of not taking vengeance or holding grudges against others. The Golden Rule has been debated for many reasons, including the meaning of "neighbor" and "as yourself". Some say that the Golden Rule is more about action than just saying you love your neighbor. For example, Hillel is said to have told a gentile that the Golden Rule is "Whatever is hateful and distasteful to you, do not do to your fellow man."

We all were brought up with this attitude and meaning.  That's why Golda Meir had said her famous words:  "We can forgive the Arabs for killing our children. We cannot forgive them for forcing us to kill their children."

This is happening because of our weakness in their eyes; so they hide our people they kidnapped as hostages in tunnels, 50 feet under the ground (Portland sewer depth) , and have hidden their weaponry in their own schools, mosques, hospitals, homes where we wouldn't want to shoot.  Daniel Rubinstein wrote that Israel discovered 100 kilometres (62 mi) of tunnels during the 2014 Gaza War, one-third of which intruded upon Israeli territory; Ynet's Alex Fishman reported the same figure in 2017. Haaretz reporter Yaniv Kubovich reported in June 2021 that Hamas had constructed "hundreds of kilometers of tunnels the length and breadth of the Gaza Strip" after some of them were damaged during Operation Guardian of the Walls.

We developed artillery to pin-point our targets and do use them on these places in order to stop their shelling of us for that's where their shelling comes from!

This is even a situation in 2024.  Even after a first time ever world-wide Holocaust that purposely murdered 6,000,000 Jews by the Nazis, anti-Semitism is almost to the point of 1939 just before this Holocaust.  The remnants of hatred had never totally disappeared but kept popping up.

We saw the Netherlands react horribly with inducement from leaders of trying to capture Jews to kill them. Amsterdam authorities said Friday morning that five injured Israeli soccer fans have since been released from the hospital, and 20 to 30 other people were lightly injured. That's possibly 35 Israelis that were injured.   In total, 63 individuals were arrested and 10 remain in custody, police said. Other reports were that  attackers were driven to the outskirts of Amsterdam and let go.   Luckily, they were stopped before they were successful, but Israel had to send planes to retrieve them and bring them back home.

Israel is not an aggressive country taking over land masses like Russia or Nazi Germany .  Israel had even given Gaza to the Palestinians in the name of PEACE!  Israel owned Gaza through the attack of their neighbors, specifically Egypt,  in June 1967.  The Egyptian occupation of the Gaza Strip was briefly subsumed by Israel during the 1956 Suez Crisis and ended entirely during the 1967 Arab–Israeli War, after which the territory became occupied by Israel with the establishment of the Israeli Military Governorate.  Israel occupied Gaza in the 1967 war and stayed until 2005, during that time building Jewish settlements.

Israel withdrew its troops and settlers in 2005, though it retained control over its airspace, shared border and shoreline. The UN still considers the territory to be

occupied by Israel.  Israel had moved out completely, even leaving their businesses for

the Palestinians.  It's a good will act they will not want to repeat ever again.

The Era of the Sanhedrin and Its Rabbis In Updated Judaism, Part II

 Nadene Goldfoot

Judea:  47 BCE

  • Battle at Mount Tabor in Judea: Roman troops, commanded by Gabinius, defeat the forces of Alexander, son of Aristobulus II of Judea, who is attempting to re-establish Judean independence. Some 10,000 Jews die at the hands of the Romans.

  • Ever making improvements in keeping up with time, Rabbi Hillel the Elder was born in the 1st century BCE but some time before Jesus.  He was a scholar and founder of the school known as the "House of Hillel" and ancestor of a dynasty of patriarchs which held office until the 5th century.  Hillel was born in Babylonia in a family that was taken as slaves there in 597 and again in 586 BCE from Judah by King Nebuchadnezzer.  He was able to move to Palestine and was a manual labor worker while a student with the famous teachers, Shemaiah and Avialyon or Avtalion.
  • The basic form of the rabbi developed in the Pharisaic (167 BCE – 73 CE) and Talmudic (70–640 CE) eras, when learned teachers assembled to codify Judaism's written and oral laws (Sanhedrin). The title "rabbi" was first used in the first century CE.
  •              King Herod the Great (73 BCE-4 BCE), killer of his own family...killer of many....
  • King of Judea, son of Antipater the Idumean by his Nabatean wife, Cypros, appointed governor of Galilee by his father, and immediately executed dissidents.
As to Herod's family line, Idumea was also on the land that Simeon was given by Joshua. Simeon was surrounded by Judah.   Nabatea was on the land of Moab. Moab was on the eastern side of the Dead Sea.  So Herod was not Jewish by birth but by living in Judah.  No doubt he lacked any preliminary education on Jewish thought.   He was a product of Rome.

  •  For this Herod was brought up by the Sanhedrin and saved from a death decree himself by Hyrcanus and Sextus Caesar, governor of Syria.  During his escapades he had fled to Rome and was appointed king of Judea by the Roman Senate.

  •  He captured Jerusalem in 37 CE with the help of a large Roman force.  Earlier that year he had married Mariamne, granddaughter of the high priest, a Cohen, Hyrcanus.  Herod received a free hand in internal affairs, but was stopped from conducting an independent foreign policy.  The people were attached to the Hasmonean rulers, their own people and dynasty, so he did a lot of suppressing his opposition, most likely a lot of killing, his style in solving issues.
  • Because of Palace intrigues, he put to death his wife, Mariamne, their 2 sons Alexander and Aristobulus, and in the end, his firstborn, Antipater, who was his son by his 1st wife, Doris in 5 BCE.  Herod killed his own sons Alexander and Aristobulus in 7 BCE  and Antipater was to succeed him but on discovering a plot to poison him, Herod ordered Antipater's execution 5 days before his own death.

  • They lived in the troubled times of Herod's reign.  Shammai foresaw the dangers of Roman hegemony and therefore enacted many rules intended to keep the Jews from mixing with the heathen.  He took a rigorous point of view in moral and religious matters, while at the same time,  being of a friendly nature, teaching "receive everyone graciously."

His school of Shemaiah/Shammai was famous for its disputes with the School of Hillel.  Shammai himself differed on only 3 points with Hillel.  Very few halakhic teachings have survived in his name.  Shammai is possibly identical with the Pharisee Sameas who rallied the Sanhedrin against Herod's attempt at intimidation in 47 BCE.

Hillel, born in Babylonia in 1st century BCE

Hillel became a great scholar, working his way with  his school upward and was appointed president of the Sanhedrin, a body of 71 scholars who were the Supreme Court of their day.  At the same time, he had made a friend who was his ideological opponent named Shammai who was his debate partner.  They were the last of the pairs, called Zugot, of scholars in Debate, which was very popular at the time.  As partners, Hillel was noted for his humility and tendency to leniency.  What did they debate about?  Points in the Torah and the extended additional pages making up the Tanakh or Bible. The Sanhedrin ended before the end of the 4th century CE.  The thought was there to revive it in 1948, but dismissed.

The two men differed in their decisions only on a few halakhot;  their schools ("House of Hillel) and "House of Shammai") diverged in many instances, but legal practice ultimately went in almost all cases according to the decision of the House of Hillel who laid down 7 rules of bible interpretation.  Many stories illustrate his virtues and he is credited with the authorship in its negative form of the so-called GOLDEN  RULE which is:  "Do not do unto others that which you would not have them do unto you."    Today on many campuses, we have a Hillel House for Jewish students.  It was said to many people who wanted to know about Judaism while standing on one foot; who wanted a very short synopsis about our religion in how it was different from other religions like Christianity.  Added to this quip was "and all the rest is commentary."  It is the heart of Judaism. Hillel may have been called Rabbi Hillel.

Aluf (General) Simeon Bar Kokhba, born  in Modiin, home of the Hashmoneans and 1st scene of Mattathias's rebellion against the officials of Antiochus Epiphanes.  Today, a burning torch is carried to Jerusalem from Modiin each Hannukah by relay runners. They are 22 miles apart.

By the year 132-135, Aluf Bar Kokhba (Simeon ben Kokhba) had stepped up with his army to take back Jerusalem which he did for these 3 years, then was killed in battle.  He was the nephew of Rabbi Eleazar of Modiin and of Davidic descent, meaning he was a Cohen.  He led the revolt against Hadrian, said to be the Messiah for doing this, but not taken seriously.  The revolt came about because Romans were rebuilding Jerusalem differently as a Roman colony;  the prohibition of circumcision, with feelings against the Romans fermenting for a long time.  Romans came after them with army of 35,000 under Hadrian and Julius Severus.  Judaea fell into desolation;  population was annihilated, Jerusalem became a heathen city, barred to Jews.  Bar Kokhba had fought for 3 years against the best and largest army in the world.

Rabbi Rashi (Rabbi Solomon Yitzhaki ben Isaac (1040-1105) came along over a thousand years later in France with new insights. He had to do his studying in the Rhineland but returned to his native Troyes where his school rapidly achieved a wide reputation.  He earned his livelihood from his vineyard while teaching in his school.  His chief contribution to Judaism was his lucid commentary on the Bible and Babylonian talmud.  The commentary on the bible, particularly the Torah (5 books of Moses)  became universally popular, while his notes on the Babylonian Talmud were responsible for making that writing like  an open book.

His style was simple and concise, and his object, to present the direct rational meaning of the text, nevertheless the popularity of his commentary on the Torah can be partly attributed to the admixture of Midrash.  His commentary on the entire Talmud  made several outstanding contributions.  His commentaries served as the basis for later scholars such as Nahmanides and Ibn Ezra in their interpretation of the Torah.

Rabbis of the 1st century CE

  • Shimon ben Gamliel (Gamaliel) (the Elder), was a sage and served as the nasi of the Great Sanhedrin in Jerusalem. (c. 10 BCE–70 CE), was grandson of Hillel.  He corresponded with Jewish communities in Palestine and the Diaspora and framed several regulations at social improvements.  He wanted a better legal position for women.

Abraham Ibn Ezra (1089-1164) scholar and poet, born in Spain, until 1140, journeyed visiting Italy, France, England, and maybe even Palestine; wrote in Hebrew, biblical commentary, close to biblical criticism.  A Hebrew grammarian of importance, translated works from Arabic.  A scientist and author of several studies on astrology in which he firmly believed.

Maimonides (Maimon ben Joseph)(1110-1165) scholar, father of of Maimonides, born in Cordova, Spain, author of Arabic commentary on the Bible, left Spain in 1148 because of persecution.

Abraham ben Moses ben Maimon (1186-1237) son of Moses Maimonides,  Court physician to Sultan Alkamil, wrote encyclopedic work on Judaism--and commentaries on the Torah, the Talmud and his father's books.  Acted as Nagid of Egyptian Jewry, in succession to his father, he issued ordinances to strengthen the community.

Nahmanides (Moses ben Nahman) (Rambam)  very well known Rabbi, (1194-1270) a Rabbi in Gerona -Aragon, Spain; his range of knowldge was unrivaled in his day. Known as the foremost Spanish talmudist.  He was opposed to the study of philosophy, athough not to Maimonides.

  • Yohanan ben Zakkai (1st century CE) 1st-century sage in Judea, key to the development of the Mishnah, the first Jewish sage attributed the title of rabbi in the Mishnah. The Mishnah was the legal codification containing the core of the Oral
  • Law.  It was compiled by Rabbi Judah ha-Nasi on the basis of previous
  • collections and arranged logically, divided into 6 Orders dealing primarily
  • with 1. the religious laws pertaining to agricultures and  2.  dealing
  • with the laws of Sabbath, festivals, etc and 3. dealing with the laws of
  • marriage and divorce and vows; 4.  treating of civil and criminal
  • legislation, 5. describing the laws regulating ritual slaughter, sacrifices
  • and consecrated objects, and the 6th laws of ceremonial purity.  Orders
  • are divided into tractates, and tractates are divided into chapters, that are
  • divided into mishnayyot.  It's amazingly well-organized.

Where Were We From 1290 to 1655? Dark Ages On?

 Nadene Goldfoot

                                                        Background History

Constantine  I the Great; Roman ruler (312-337) His edict of toleration which he issued at Milan in 312 in effect established the supremacy of Christianity.  By 315, his decrees took an anti-Jewish turn, canceling Jewish exemptions from municipal office and prohibiting  proselytization or interference with Jewish converts to Christianity.  His legislation initiated the legal degradation of Jews characteristic of the Middle Ages.

In 329 AD Constantine the Great issued laws prohibiting Jews to own Christian slaves, prohibited mixed marriages and punished by death conversion of Christians to Judaism.

One of Constantine’s religious laws regarded attempts to stop Jews from converting to Christianity. It was noted that Judaism was “an abominable sect”.

He also began to claim land in Israel for use by the Christian Church.  During a visit by his mother in 326 to 327, she identified places where key events may have taken place in Jesus’ life; Constantine went on build churches at those locations.

Constantine supported the separation of the date of Easter from the Jewish Passover (see also Quartodecimanism), stating in his letter after the First Council of Nicaea (which had already decided the matter):

Many councils – diocesan, provincial, national, and ecumenical – have dealt with matters that concerned the Jews. The very first ecumenical council, that of Nicaea (325), called primarily for the purpose of defining the nature of Jesus, also had before it the problem of transferring the day of rest from the Jewish Sabbath to the Christian Sunday, a problem not solved for a long time after. Even before Nicaea, a council in Elvira (Spain) in c. 305 had tried to keep Jews and Christians apart by ordering the latter not to share a meal with Jews, not to marry Jews, not to use Jews to bless their fields, and not to observe the Jewish Sabbath. These objectives remained constant for centuries. For example, the prohibition against sharing a meal with Jews was repeated at Vannes (465), Epaon (517), Orleans III (538), and Mâcon (583); mixed marriages were prohibited at Orleans II (533), Clermont (535), Orleans III (538), and Orleans IV (541). As Jews entered commerce, pagan and Christian slaves became a subject for conciliar legislation. The trade in slaves was not forbidden, but Jews were forbidden to own Christian slaves and, especially, not to convert any slave to Judaism. These prohibitions were enacted and repeated at Orleans III (538), Orleans IV (541), Mâcon (583), Mâcon (626–27), Rome (743), Meaux and Paris (845–46), and – with less frequency – even later, down to the period of the Crusades.

The Roman rulers saw Jews as competitors of their new religion, Christianity.  Jews were established by apostles of New Testament as the bad guys who killed G-d. The new religion of Christianity brought on more anti-Semitism than ever that had come from the Greeks and then the Romans.  Now the Romans had even bigger reasons as Helena, mother of Constantine, turned the Romans onto Christianity.

By 1388, one year after the Christian-Catholic religion was introduced all over Lithuania,  was the 1st settlement of Jews in the Great Lithuanian Princedom, the Magnus Ducatus Lithuaniae, began by invitation of the Grand Dukes Gediminas and Vytautas (Witold).  They granted the Jews a preferred civil status and incomparable bills of rights in many different spheres, such as protecting their bodies and property;  freedom to maintain their religious rituals;  significant alleviation in the field of commerce, and money lending--this being permitted in relation to Christians.  There was a particular regulation to protect Jews against blood libels.

By 1495, 3 years after the 1492 Spanish Inquisition expulsion, Grand Duke Alexander expelled all Jews numbering more than 6,000, from Lithuania and confiscated their property.   Alexander became king of Poland 8 years later and allowed the Jews to return and gave them back some of their property.  The Christian townspeople then became jealous and envious.  Problems ensued.

Jews, who had entered England with the Norman conquest of 1066, were expelled in 1290 and were not allowed back in until 1655. The Norman Conquest was the 11th-century invasion and occupation of England by an army made up of thousands of Norman, Breton, Flemish, and French troops, all led by the Duke of Normandy, later styled William the Conqueror.   They probably came in with the French troops.  RASHI (1040-1105), our French rabbinical commentator had returned from the Rhineland to his native Troyes where he had established a school that was well-known.  Students of his could had been with the conquerors.  Then Jews were expelled from England by 1290 which lasted until 1655.  This was 365 years of a country without any Jews.  Why?  Laws from the Emperor that excluded Jews from their lands coming from Rome in the 300s.

This covers the time of Shakespeare (1564-1616) who wrote about Shylock, a Jew who William knew nothing about except in here-say and his bible.

William Tyndale (1494-1536) translated the New Testament from the original Greek and had it printed in 1526 in English.  They had only read their New Testament for the past 130 years where Jews were written about in bad light.

In 329 AD Emperor Constantine issued laws prohibiting Jews to own Christian slaves, prohibited mixed marriages and punished by death conversion of Christians to Judaism. One of Constantine's religious laws regarded attempts to stop Jews from converting to Christianity. It was noted that Judaism was “an abominable sect”.He also began to claim land in Israel for use by the Christian Church.  During a visit by his mother in 326 to 327, she identified places where key events may have taken place in Jesus’ life; Constantine went on build churches at those locations.

The Pope (leader of all Christians then)  had sent out word that Jews were not to be tolerated and so many Catholic countries started expelling Jews.

Hillel, a famous rabbinical Talmud commentator, was born in Babylonia in the late BCE era and established a dynasty of rabbis.  Hillel II was in Palestine (330-365) who we could also call an astrophysicist who had published a system of intercalation to equalize the solar and lunar years, thus making it possible for the Jewish calendar to be determined without actual observation of the lunar phases.

Emperor Julian who followed Constantius II as emperor.  A nephew of Constantine the Great, Julian was one of few in the imperial family to survive the purges and civil wars during the reign of Constantius II, his cousin.

Hillel was in correspondence with the emperor Julian who addressed him as "my brother, the venerable patriarch."  "Though the emperor hated and oppressed the Christians, he manifested benevolence and humanity towards the Jews. He wrote to the Jewish patriarchs and leaders, ...Emperor Julian (361-363) who had left the Christian fold. Although apparently in favor of freedom of religion, he was in reality unjust to the Christians but rather partial to the Jews. In a famous Greek letter to the Jews, (selection one below), he abolished the special taxes paid to the Roman government and sought also to stop the payment of a tax paid by Jews for the support of the Jewish patriarchate in Palestine. In this same letter he also encouraged the rebuilding of Jerusalem and, we may assume, of the Jewish Temple. Had this attempt been successful it would have meant the reestablishment of the Jewish state with its sacrifices, priests, and more important, its Sanhedrin or Senate.  His attempt to build a Third Temple in Jerusalem was probably intended to harm Christianity rather than please Jews. Julian also forbade Christians from teaching and learning classical texts.  He was the last emperor defending the Jewish people.

A German Crusade massacred Jews in many European towns in 1096. The Worms massacre was the murder of at least 800 Jews from Worms, Holy Roman Empire (now Germany), at the hands of crusaders under Count Emicho in May 1096. The massacre at Worms was one of a number of attacks against Jewish communities perpetrated during the First Crusade (1096–1099).

Crusaders massacred Jews in Jerusalem in 1099.  France followed England and expelled Jews by 1306. Then they did it again in Toulouse, France in 1420.  Spain forcibly converted Jews to Christianity in 1146, then again in 1391.  Spain in 1355 massacred 12,000 Jews by a mob in Toledo, Spain. By 1492 when Columbus sailed the ocean blue, they also expelled 180,000 Jews.  50,000  were converted to Christianity in order to remain in Spain.  They came to be called the Marranos.

It continued.  In the early 1320s, Pope John XXII (1316-1334) expelled all the Jews from one of his sovereign territories, the Comtat Venaissin.   Hungary expelled Jews from 1349 to 1360.  Jews had been in Germany early on, but Austria expelled them by 1421. Lithuania expelled Jews in 1495.  Sicily and Sardinia expelled Jews from Portugal in 1497, right after they had moved from Spain to Portugal for refuge.   The island of Rhodes were forcibly converted, expelled or taken into slavery by 1502.  The kingdom of Naples expelled Jews by 1541.  Poland was finally affected by 1648 to 1656 when 100,000 Jews were murdered in the Chmielnicki massacres.  Russia expelled Jews by 1727 then again in 1747. By 1882, the 750,000 Jews living in Russia were forced to re-settle in the Pale of Settlement by Catherine the Great. By 1871, when my grandfather was born in Lithuania, there were anti-Jewish pogroms going on in towns of Russia (Russia proper and in the Pale)  until 1821.   She had set apart this block of land for Jews who were then not allowed into Russia proper.  This involved Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Ukraine, etc.   It became a huge ghetto area.  Russian land itself is huge-huge but mostly very cold land.  Jews who had been in Moscow and St. Petersburg were expelled by 1891. Jews in the Soviet Union from 1917 onwards were denied the right of national identity.  If you were caught in a synagogue or reading a prayer book of Hebrew, you were put into jail.  In 1980-1981, I studied Hebrew in Israel.  My teacher, Sarah, was communicating by mail with a very famous Russian Jew in prison who was trying to learn Hebrew with her help.  No emails in those days.  This man's wife finally managed after years of prison to get him out.

Nazi influence in Baghdad fanned anti-British and anti-Semitic sentiments;  books such as Mein Kampf had become very popular with Muslims in Middle East.

The Middle East was also affected in Meshed, Persia when they forcibly converted the entire Jewish community to Islam in 1838.  By 1941 the Jewish community of Baghdad was attacked by mobs leaving 180 Jews dead.  From 1948 onward, the persecution of Jewish communities in Arab countries saw mass expulsions.

Then, of course, Germany had its way and invaded Poland in 1939 and started the murder of 6 million Jews by the German Nazis and their European collaborators.

Every country in the world had been busy throwing out Jews.  Many came to the USA by 1900s or even a little earlier.  By 1924, USA had made a law cutting the numbers immensely for countries with Jews in order to almost prevent all Jews from entering.  This affected eastern Europe a lot.

Palestine was under the control of the Ottoman Empire for 400 years, and when they lost the war of WWI, they lost control of Palestine.  The Allies took it and gave England a 30 year mandate to govern Palestine.  They early on decided not to follow the goal to make the Jewish Homeland or help Jews to do this, and they allowed many Arabs into the land while keeping out Jews.  They even quickly made a deal with Abdullah of Transjordan and gave him the land designated for the Jews.  They, being the boss, broke all the rules of years of decision-making by leaders of the League of Nations and the Jews.

When Jews were expelled from Spain, they moved over to Portugal, where they had a respite of moving for a few years before that country expelled them.  From then on, they were on the move, trying to find a safe country.  Wherever they went, the 1492 Spanish Inquisition followed them, threatening and taking their lives.  They even followed Jews to Mexico.

Jews had gone to either Palestine or the USA, depending on the years.  Early on, after 70 CE when Jerusalem fell to the Romans, the few remaining alive had scatter to the 4 winds, but mostly in nearby lands of the Arabs.
