Facing 110 Degree F in Portland, Oregon in June

 Nadene Goldfoot

Friday will see 95, Saturday will be 107,, Sunday-110, Monday-103 and Tuesday 95.  Wed-91

Portland and towns nearby are facing 110 degrees to hit us Sunday, June 27, 2021.  That's hotter than hot.  We have humidity!  In the 2010s, Portland had 169 days at 90 or above, more than any other decade on record. Memory does not uncover any 110 day.  Ever!!!

Is this Summer in the Past?  Will this happen during COVID 19 ? The Delta variant is now the greatest threat.

I spent my childhood in Portland and in the same house in Ladd's Addition, a community with trees. No one had air conditioning, but we had a basement and lived downstairs in the summer.  Dad had a double bed, we had a card table with 4  chairs, and there we were.  Mom, being Mom, climbed the stairs to the kitchen and made hot dinners for us all, then climbed down and brought it to us.  No dishwashers in those days, either, from about 1936 onward.    Now that same house does have both, thank goodness.  But we didn't have extreme weather, either.

"Scientists' conclusions are the same in Oregon, said Philip Mote, the director for the Climate Change Research Institute. Data shows the warming can only be explained by rising greenhouse gases, not natural phenomena like El Nino or the sun, Mote said.  "It's not too much of a stretch to link rising temperatures to greenhouse gases," Mote said.

With nearly a month to go, this summer is the third hottest on record, National Weather Service meteorologist Clinton Rocky said. The four hottest - 2015, 2009, 2017 and a tie between 2014 and 2004, respectively - all occurred in the past two decades. Before 2000, only three years - 1967, 1985 and 1992 - broke into the top 10."

Be careful.  Using too much electricity can cause a loss of all of it.  Have a few paper fans handy.  Take care of your dogs and cats.  They can't take the heat either.  Keep all life watered.
