The Law Of Opposite Attraction: Hellenization, Democracy

 Nadene Goldfoot

Alexander the Great led Hellenization into the theocracy of King Saul and King David and Solomon's territory, and just about destroyed it.   He was king of Macedonia from 356 to 323 BCE, and swept into Judea with his great personality that made a deep impression on the Jews.  Josephus describes his visit to Jerusalem where as he was invading the country, he made the people feel he was honoring them. First he honored the high priest, Jaddua and praised him with flattery.  He showered the Jews with privileges to all Jews of Judah and the Diaspora.  The cause of Alexander the Great's death is debated by historians. He died in Babylon on June 11, 323 BC at the age of 32.

Saul (11th century BCE) son of Kish of the tribe of Benjamin had been selected for rule by the Prophet, Samuel out of great leader possibilities from the 11 other tribes.  It was at a time the people were being attacked by the Philistines and Ammonites and Saul was an organizer.  He organized a trained army and inflicted defeats on the enemy.  Internally, he carried out a purification of religion by eliminating witchcraft, but he kept arguing with Samuel.  This caused Samuel to go against Saul and he selected David as his successor who was becoming very popular with the people for his army fighting.  Saul became jealous, rightly, of David, and drove David out of the country.

Then the Philistines launched a united attack and Saul fell with his 3 sons including Jonathan in the battle on Mt. Gilboa.  Saul's death led to a temporary domination of the Philistines, but the groundwork he laid for national unity eventually proved effective in establishing a strong and independent Israelite monarchy.  Solomon was king after his father's death and the line continued for Israel till Hoshea in 730-721 BCE, while Judah  continued to Zedekiah in  597 to 586 BCE.
Greeks and Minoans and their lives

Jews during Greek and Roman days not faring well at all unless complying with Hellenization.  But in 332 BCE a young Alexander the Great led a Greek and Macedonian force that swept through the eastern Mediterranean and Egypt and extended east to include Persia and part of India. He died in the process, and as a result his empire splintered into successor kingdoms. Judah, now called Judea, lay at the boundary between two of these Greek successor kingdoms, the Seleucids in Asia Minor and the Ptolemies in Egypt. Fortune favored first one and then the other, and Judea remained a buffer state between them.

How Judea ceased to be the pawn in this imperial struggle and achieve independence is a compelling story, treated in 1, 2, and 4 Maccabees and texts of the Ethiopian Bible, and that kingdom was “comparable in Jewish history only with the kingdom of David.” Under the Persians, religious worship had remained a matter of local custom, generally protected by the benign paternalism of the imperial rulers. But the form of Hellenization in Syrian-ruled areas imposed a new kind of local administration. Greek colonization, coupled with the philosophical ideals of a universal world order, called for a more thorough transformation of local customs.   Greek cities founded colonies or reconstituted older cities by imposing the nomima, laws and customs, of the parent city. These included laws and a constitution, rituals, and a religious calendar. A dēmos, or roll of citizens, was established; a boulē or city council of aristocratic leaders was appointed; and a gymnasium and ephēbeum were constructed for the education of elite boys. A universal Greek education would ensure the inculcation of Greek values, and even native texts became increasingly modeled on Greek literature.

Greek or Macadamia and Judah civilization were opposites with opposing goals, yet wherever Alexander went, he charmed the population and his Greek culture was diffused over the Mediterranean and the Middle East after the end of the 4th century BCE as a result of his conquests.  It was about at that time that Judea (for it was not called Palestine until after 135 CE) fell under Greek rule and Judea was surrounded by a ring of hellenized cities.  At the same time, the Jewish Diaspora was expanding rapidly in Egypt, Cyrenaica, Syria and Asia Minor, which were all in process of hellenization.  By the 3rd century BCE, the Jews of Egypt had adopted Greek and the Septuagint translation of the Tanakh (Bible)  had been completed.

                                                Antiochus IV Epiphanes

There was antagonism between the traditional and hellenizing Jews in Jerusalem that brought on Antiochus IV Epiphanes' attempt to suppress Judaism and the Hasmonean revolt.

                                                        The Emperor, Herod

Though John Hyrcanus and Alexander Yannai broke the power of the Greek cities in Eretz Yisrael, later these were restored and strengthened as a result of Roman intervention aided by Emperor Herod and his descendants.

By the Mishnaic Period, (70 to 200 CE) (legal codification of the Oral Law  done by Rabbi Judah Ha-Nasi;  Jewish material life in Eretz was mainly Hellenistic even though it had ended to be the political program of any Jewish faction.  Both the Mishnah and Talmud contain hundreds of Greek words that were absorbed into Hebrew and Aramaic and tomb inscriptions were in Greek, so that must have been the spoken language of the Period.  The Mishnaic period generally refers to the time period spanning from the late first century CE to the early third century CE, during which the Mishnah, a collection of Jewish oral laws, was compiled by rabbis known as Tannaim; essentially encompassing the period where the Mishnah was being assembled and the related rabbinic traditions were being codified.

                                             King Henry VIII of England

England was also ruled by Kings and was undemocratic.  Since the office of Prime Minister evolved rather than being instantly created, it may not be totally clear-cut who the first prime minister was. However, this appellation is traditionally given to Sir Robert Walpole, who became First Lord of the Treasury of Great Britain in 1721.

The religious group of Pilgrims   left Holland, who had been Englishmen, for America on the ship, the Mayflower, seeking a democratic life in 1620.  The Mayflower carried 102 passengers in 1620, including Pilgrims, servants, contracted workers, and English families. The pilgrims who risked their lives to settle in a strange land were more – and less – than folklore heroes. They were extreme Puritans, that is to say they disapproved of several of the rituals and practices of the Church of England that had been established by parliament at the beginning of Elizabeth I's reign.  They had no say in the matter if they stayed in England, so they up and left for better lives.

" You don't need Fema! " The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is an agency of the United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS), initially created under President Jimmy Carter by Presidential Reorganization Plan No. 3 of 1978 and implemented by two Executive Orders on April 1, 1979. The agency's primary purpose is to coordinate the response to a disaster that has occurred in the United States and that overwhelms the resources of local and state authorities.

Now we're almost back to a kind of kingship again with our President Trump, who is acting like one.  He's trying to overthrow the 14th article in our constitution saying that a baby born in the USA is automatically a USA citizen.  This is being used to eliminate Mexican Nationals who entered the US illegally, and he's sending them all back.

Yet, talk about opposing values, he has been the first president to treat Israel righteously, and they were at the point of needing some understanding badly.  Sadly, there was a problem with Obama and his background, though he tried to be fair and square, his prejudice came through.  It's my opinion that Trump's son -in law, Jerad Kushner, is the guide of Trump's understandings, as Trump is not known to be a reader or historian, but relies on his listening techniques to others, and then his gut opinions.  Trump, in his first few days, has kept all his promises made when running for the office, so people should not be shocked. This part of history, Israel helped by the man least interested, though his daughter had married a Jewish man, would stand by Israel when criticized so much by his own country, defies all reason.

Hellenization became the fad, the favorite of a religious group, undoing much of their understanding and practice to "fit in" with others.  Trump won the president's seat over people of much better character;  in fact his was one of the worst.  The Republicans and Democrats were almost divided 50-50.  In both cases, people turned around and did  a 180 which was astonishing!

Even in sex, opposites have been attracting each other.  It may have started with Neanderthals and Homo Sapiens.  In my own DNA, I carry 2.9% of Neanderthal genes.  We've had soap operas of Abie's Irish Rose, and copy-cat versions since then-the Jewish and Catholic love stories.

I feel the whole theory of opposite attraction is to stir up the pot.  Get opposing ideas.  G-d must adore real debates;  not the kind held during election time but real ones practiced in high schools and colleges.  It's all to get us to see 2 sides of an issue, and the possible outcomes;  trying to stretch our brains a little.  Things adored and fought for must be worthy enough.  Otherwise, why bother?  Israel's history is full of being saved at the last minute in miraculous situations, and Trump is a part of that.

Wasn't David Chosen As A Moral Person and Why It's Important

Nadene Goldfoot

According to the Bible, Samuel, the Prophet,  anointed David as king of Israel after God chose David to lead the people: King David ruled from c.1000 -960 BCE, and was the youngest son of Jesse, born in Bethlehem. According to the Bible, Jesse was the son of Obed and the grandson of Ruth and of Boaz. He lived in Bethlehem, in Judah, and was of the Tribe of Judah, he was a farmerbreeder and owner of sheep. He was a prominent resident of the town of Bethlehem.

Jesse was the grandson of Ruth and her husband, Boaz.   Jesse lived in Bethlehem but for fear of Saul, lived for a time in Moab.  Ruth was a Moabite.  Her Israelite husband, Mahlon, died so she went  his mother;   her mother-in-law, Naomi,  back to Bethlehem and eventually re-married   Naomi's cousin, Boaz.  Boaz was wealthy with property.  The ROYAL HOUSE OF DAVID  is known as THE STOCK OR ROOT OF JESSE. (Is. 11:1.10)

Saul suffers with headaches and David, also a musician, soothes him with his music with his harp.  King Saul David and Saul, oil on canvas by Ernst Josephson, 1878; in the National museum, Stockholm, Sweden.  Saul was son of Kish from the tribe of Benjamin, yet to fight against the Philistines and Ammonites.  He would have to make expeditions against the Moabites, Ammonites, and Arameans.  Internally, he carried out a purification of religions and elimination of witchcraft.

King Saul, 1st king of Israel, The prophet Samuel selected Saul as the first king of Israel, under the direction of God: God's choice: God told Samuel that Saul was the chosen candidate to be king. Samuel's anointing: Samuel anointed Saul with oil and gave him God's blessing. Public acclamation: The Israelites also publicly acclaimed Saul as king after he led them to victory in battle against the Ammonites. Saul's stature and military ability: The Israelite tribes supported Saul because of his kingly stature and military ability.  Saul was a strong, handsome, and well-built man who was a foot taller than everyone else in Israel.  He must have been 6 feet plus at the time.

At age 25 David became King Saul's, (Israel's first king), armor-bearer.  He had been the best friend of the king's son, Jonathan.  He fought in the war against the Philistines and showed Saul his military prowess, so for that was chosen as King Saul's daughter Michal's husband.  David went on to take other wives, but never as many as his son, Solomon, would have.

David was such an outstanding young man that Saul became jealous of him, and it became dangerous for David.  He sought refuge with Achish, king of Gath.  David returned to Israel after Saul and 3 of his sons had been defeated and killed in battle at Mt. Gilboa.  David decided to live in Hebron and while there, declared himself king of Judah, a rather egotistical act !

Was David ever immoral?   Yes, according to the Bible, King David committed several immoral acts, most notably committing adultery with Bathsheba and then arranging for her husband Uriah to be killed in battle to cover up the affair; this is considered a significant immoral act in the biblical narrative.   He committed 4 immoral acts during his life: Without a code to follow, he didn't know.

  • Adultery: David had an affair with Bathsheba, who was married to Uriah the Hittite.
  • Murder: To conceal his adultery, David sent Uriah to the front lines of battle with the intention of getting him killed.
  • Abuse of Power: As king, David used his authority to facilitate his affair and cover up his crimes.
  • Deception: He attempted to deceive the prophet Nathan about his actions.

At first, Saul's general, Abner, sided with David's opponent, Saul's son, Eshbaal  by crowning him king in Mahanaim.  After Elkshbaal's murder, all the tribes accepted David as king!

Red Sea Crossing on the Exodus Route

After being king for 8 years, David captured the Jebusite stronghold of Jerusalem and made it his capital.  Eventually, he moved the ARK there.   He was able to break the Philistine military power and annexed the entire coastal belt !  He defeated the Edomites which by that move, gave the Israelites an outlet to the Red Sea at Ezion-Geber.

Our King David was considered a very moral person.  He was chosen as King of Israel before the time of Moses leading the Israelites out of their Egyptian Servitude that amounted to a 40 year march to escape from that land after living there for 400 years.God chose David because of his good heart, not his appearance.   though he was said to be good looking and had gingy colored hair.  God told Samuel to look at the heart, not the outward appearance. Samuel anointed David in front of his brothers when David was around 15 years old. The Spirit of the Lord took control of David immediately after the anointing. David reigned for 40 years and became the most famous king in Israel's history.

What gave Samuel, the Prophet, the ability to be able to choose a leader for a growing population of Israelites who clamored their need for a king?

Before the Israelites arrived in Canaan to live, the elders of this community acted as judges over problematic situations.  Afterward, the soldier-leader, priest, or prophet took on this responsibility as well as their original ones.  So, we find the prophet, Samuel, traveled from place to place to administer justice.  (I Sam.i7:15-17).

Samuel was the last
Israelite JUDGE, something they had before the need for a king over all.  He was born into a Levitical family   and lived on Mt. Ephraim and Ramah in the land of Zuph.  His mother consecrated him before he was born as a Nazirite who would serve in the sanctuary at Shiloh.  While there, he received a Divine call as a child and later prophesized the destruction of THE HOUSE OF ELI and his sons and the decisive defeat of the Israelites by the Philistines at the BATTLE OF APHEK.  Samuel tried to restore the traditional religious worship .  He lived in Ramah and judged the Israelites in the sacred towns of Bethel, Gilgal, and Mizpeh, preparing the way for national unity.  He started groups of prophets that formed to guide the people.  In his old age, he reluctantly gave into popular demand for a king and had picked Saul, but lived to experience tension between himself and Saul.

It was Moses who established the rules of morality, however, written down as the Torah, our 5 Books of Moses that starts the Old Testament. He eventually throughout the 40 years of traveling, gave his charges 613 rules of morality to keep them on the straight and narrow path.

How was it that David had morals?  He hadn't even been given the list from Moses as yet. His genes and his environment including his relationship with his parents decide his thoughts and ways.

Today's Matt Gaetz is up for an important position  to be attorney general has many Justice Department employees reeling, worried not only about their own jobs but the future of the agency that the Trump loyalist has railed against. The president-elect’s pick of the Florida Republican sent a shock throughout the Cabinet department, considering Gaetz’s lack of experience in law enforcement and the fact that he was once the subject of a federal sex trafficking investigation. The names of well-regarded veteran lawyers had circulated as possible contenders for the job, but Gaetz’s selection was broadly interpreted as an indication of the premium that Trump places on personal loyalty and Trump’s desire to have a disruptor lead a department that for years investigated and ultimately indicted him.  In other words, the Justice Department was mean to him, so he is punishing that department with Matt Gaetz.  Matt was once under investigation for sex trafficking!

I can say to look at the parents and ancestors of Matt Gaetz and their ways of behaving towards him and others.  They set down their rules, and either follow them diligently and fairly with love or are just plain lax.  It's either Matt's environment or his genes that create his behaviors.  Now look at Trump's reasons for selecting him in the first place.  Trump is using such a man as Matt for his own personal reasons.

Jewish family of someone's ancestors living on Mt. Zion some generations back.  In the Hebrew Bible, Mount Zion was first used to refer to the City of David, and later to the Temple Mount. In the Old Testament, it was a metaphor for Israel, the Promised Land.
In the New Testament, it was a metaphor for Jerusalem, God's eternal holy city.

Rooted in the Hebrew Scriptures, Zion originally referred to a specific geographical location but evolved to symbolize the presence of God and the spiritual heart of Israel.

The term “Zion” (צִיּוֹן, pronounced Tziyon in Hebrew) holds a profound significance both in the Bible and today. “Zion” (צִיּוֹן, pronounced “Tziyon”) means “a sign” or “a landmark.” The root צ-י-ן forms a verb in modern Hebrew today that means “to point out.”

In the Bible, Zion refers to the city of Jerusalem and the Land of Israel. It symbolizes the spiritual heart of Israel and the presence of God. The term Zion is also the source of the political movement known as Zionism, which seeks to establish a Jewish state in Israel.

As for David, many of us Jews have turned to DNA analysis and find we have many cousins, even 5th cousins can register in our list. Many of us claim a DNA connection to David.   Actually, it is said that all Jews are at the least, 30th cousins, because it was originally a family way of belief that grew into a nationalistic empire; squashed long ago but revived before it was too late.  I am always happy to see we are trying to follow our moral codes no matter what the problems are.  They make up our soul.

Amalekites, The Forever Enemy of the Israelites

 Nadene Goldfoot

As a people, the Amalekites were identified as a recurrent enemy of the Israelites. This role appears in several stories: In Exodus 17:8–16, Amalek makes war against Israel in the wilderness.  Joshua weakened Amalek and its people with the sword's blade.  Moses said, "Hashem maintains a war against Amalek, from generation to generation."

Amalek were a nomadic folk that wandered between Southern Canaan.  They preyed on other people.  They attacked the Israelites in the desert near Rephidim, just outside of Egypt's land shortly after the Exodus, annihilating the weak and weary found at the end of the  Exodus grouping of people of 603,550.   They were an ancient people mentioned several time in the Bible, almost always as hostile to Israel.

Most often the prey wolves select is in some way weaker and/or more vulnerable than the other animals in the herd. They may be injured, sick, old, very young or genetically inferior.

Amalekites behaved more like wolves would have, having no reason to attack such weak people.  Were they possibly cannibalistic as well?  Like wolves might have done?  They may have been a more primitive group of people developmentally who were savage at this point in time, obviously people the Exodus wanted to avoid.

Notice the town of Sur, possible Amalekite land.  Shur (Hebrew: שור, romanizedŠūr, sometimes rendered in translations as Sur) is a location mentioned several times in the Hebrew BibleJames K. Hoffmeier believes that the 'way of Shur' was located along the Wadi Tumilat — an arable strip of land to the east of the Nile Delta, serving as the ancient transit route between Ancient Egypt and Canaan across the Sinai Peninsula. When Hagar ran away from Sarai (Abram's wife, her owner), "the Angel of the Lord found her ... by the well in the way to Shur" (Book of Genesis, Genesis 16:7, KJV).  Shur is also mentioned in 1 Samuel 15:7 — "Then Saul slaughtered the Amalekites from Havilah all the way to Shur, east of Egypt." According to the Book of Exodus (Exodus 15:22–23), Marah is located in the "wilderness of Shur."   Did the Amalekites prey on the people of Shur or was Shur their home base?

Where is Havilah?  Havilah (Hebrew: חֲוִילָה Ḥăwīlāh) refers to both a land and people in several books of the Bible; the one mentioned in Genesis 2:10–11, while the other is mentioned in Genesis 10:7In Genesis 2:10–11, it is associated with the Garden of Eden. Two individuals named Havilah are listed in the Table of Nations as descendants of Noah. The name also appears in Genesis 25:18, defining the territory of the Ishmaelites. Extra-biblical literature mentions Havilah as the source of precious jewels used by the Amorites. The exact location of Havilah is debated, with various scholars suggesting it may be in southwest Arabia or North Somalia.

Amalek behavior also like lions hunting prey-attacking young and old and weak ...normal for animals but not for people.  Animals prey on other animals for food.  There was no reason for the Amalakites to prey on the Israelites.  All the Israelites did was pass through their land.  From then on, Israelites became the constant prey of the Amalakites.

Moses holding up his arms during the Battle of Refidim, assisted by Hur and Aaron, in John Everett MillaisVictory O Lord! (1871). Arms upward stopped the Amaleks and arms down allowed Amaleks to have the upper hand.
Even when the Exodus made camp, they were to do it in a certain order.
The Lord said to Moses and Aaron:  “The Israelites are to camp around the tent of meeting some distance from it, each of them under their standard and holding the banners of their family.”   On the east, toward the sunrise, the divisions of the camp of Judah are to encamp under their standard. The leader of the people of Judah is Nahshon son of Amminadab.  His division numbers 74,600.Etc, see below un Bamidbar.  Moses and Joshua would know where they all were.  Talk about organization!

Rephidim was a stop-over place for the Israelites, lying between the wilderness of Sin and the Sinai Desert (Num.33:14-15).  While the people had made camp, Moses struck the rock there at Mt. Horeb, and a supply of drinking water was found.  At Rephidim, the Israelites under Joshua repelled a surprise attack of the Amalekites (Exod.17).  Rephidim's site is uncertain with some saying it was in the South of the Sinai peninsula, and others saying it was in the North.   Mt. Horeb was at the foot of which Moses saw the burning bush (Exod. 3).  In Deut., the name Horeb replaces SINAI, and the 2 mountains have become identified.

Amalekites were eventually defeated by the Israelite army under Joshua (Exod.7:8-13);  Deut.25:17-19).  Israel consequently regarded Amalek as an eternal foe, the extermination of which was a national mission (Exod.17:  13-16), incompletely carried out later by Saul (I Sam.15).  That sounds pretty horrible to us today, more like Nazis against Jews.  How could this have been?

During the period of the Judges later, (12th to 11th centuries BCE), Amalek penetrated Western Canaan at various points and their presence was a standing threat to the peace of the country.

In David's time, Amalek invaded southern Judea, burning the town of Ziklag.  David fought and defeated them heavily, only 400 escaping (I Sam.30).  Ziklag was an ancient city, there before Moses and the Exodus in the territory  that Simeon would be given.  In Saul's time (before David was king)  Ziklag was held by the Philistines who handed it to David and it remained thereafter in the territory of Judah.  (I Sam.27:6.).

In the reign of Hezekiah much later  (720-690 BCE) the tribe of Simeon overwhelmed the Amalekites and settled in their territory.

The name of Amalek remained in rabbinic literature as a symbol of everlasting enmity to Israel, and Haman "the Agagite" (Est.3:1) is regarded as a descendant of Agag, king of Amalek.  (1 Sam. 15:33).

Samuel hewing Agag, king of Amalekites

Agag was captured in battle by King Saul of Israel who spared his life.  The prophet, Samuel, regarded this as a transgression of the Divine command to wipe out the Amalekites and hewed Agag into pieces (1 Sam.15).  I suppose it depends on which side one is one to regard what act is really disgusting and horrible.  Samuel, a prophet, cut Agag into pieces!  Our sensitivities have come a long way  over 4,000 years!   The Amalekites had been attacking the Israelites since the Exodus (of about 1579-1539 BCE) to king Saul (1000 BCE) or over a period of 580  years )  I would say that Samuel had had it!  To him that would have been for forever!.

How the 12 tribes moved along on the Exodus is told in Bamidbar;

Bamidbar (Numbers) 10:11-28 On the twentieth day of the second month of the second year, the cloud lifted from above the tabernacle of the Testimony. Then the Israelites set out from the Desert of Sinai and traveled from place to place until the cloud came to rest in the Desert of Paran. They set out, this first time, at HaShem’s command through Moses.

1. The divisions of the camp of Judah went first, under their standard. Nachshon son of Amminadab was in command. 74,600

2.Nethanel son of Zuar was over the division of the tribe of Issachar,54,400

3.And Eliab son of Helon was over the division of the tribe of Zebulun. 57,400

Then the tabernacle was taken down, and the Gershonites and Merarites, who carried it, set out. The Gershonites were one of the four main divisions among the Levites in Biblical times. The Bible claims that the Gershonites were all descended from the eponymous Gershon a son of LeviThe Bible ascribes a specific religious function to the Gershonites, namely care of the curtains, hangings, and ropes of the sanctuary. This differentiation of religious activity between the Gershonites and other Levites, in particular the Aaronids, is found only in the Priestly Code. The Merarites were one of the four main divisions among the Levites in Biblical times. The Bible claims that the Merarites were all descended from the eponymous Merari, a son of Levi.

Notice that Levi, Jacob and Leah's 3rd son, is divided into the Cohens and the Levites.  The Cohens are direct descendants of Aaron, brother of Moses (both Moses and Aaron being from Levi) and Levites are simply from the line of Levi.  Cohens were given more responsibility.  Levites lived with other tribes, teaching them their history and duties, because they were not to be awarded land.

4. The divisions of the camp of Reuben went next, under their standard. Elizur son of Shedeur was in command. 46,500

5. Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai was over the division of the tribe of Simeon, 59,300  Simeon lost the most people -37,100.

6.And Eliasaph son of Deuel was over the division of the tribe of Gad. 45,650

Then the Kohathites (Kohens or Cohens, Levites, Israelites-religious duties) set out, carrying the holy things. The tabernacle was to be set up before they arrived.

7. The divisions of the camp of Ephraim went next, under their standard. Elishama son of Ammihud was in command. 40,500

8. Gamaliel son of Pedahzur was over the division of the tribe of Manasseh, 32,200

9. And Abidan son of Gideoni was over the division of the tribe of Benyamin. 35,400
