The Flood Story II Repeats: In North Carolina

 Nadene Goldfoot

No doubt Noah lived in Mesopotamia when he faced the proposition of battling a flood by building an ARK
The story of Noah and the Great Flood is told in Chapters 6, 7, and 8 of the book of Genesis.
The picture shows the land of Eretz Yisrael being called Palestine.  This didn't occur until the year 135 when the Romans named it as such for the Israelite enemy, the Philistines.

Sometime a little less than 5,784 years ago,  which was in the year of 3760 BCE, Noah's world, his land, his continent, suffered from a flood.  He and his family and the animals they saved on their ARK survived.  There are several lines of evidence that some believe support the biblical account of the Great Flood, including:

  • Marine fossils, such as those of fish, clams, and corals, are found in sedimentary rocks on continents and high mountains, rather than on the sea floor. This suggests that the continents were flooded by ocean waters.
  • Robert Ballard and his team found an ancient shoreline in the Black Sea that they believe was created by a catastrophic event that occurred around 5,000 BCE.
  • Dr. Mark Horstemeyer of Liberty University's School of Engineering has used High Performance Computing (HPC) to analyze the flood and explain the physical properties of Noah's Ark.

Today, even people in North Carolina are feeling the effects of a huge flood caused by Hurricane Helene that entered Florida first.  How did it ever continue on to North Carolina?  Asheville is on the West side.                                                                         Below, North Carolina on East side on Atlantic Ocean

                                              NORTH CAROLINA

Today, Governor Roy Cooper declared a State of Emergency ahead of Hurricane Helene as North Carolina (on Eastern Coastline)  prepares for severe weather impacts that could threaten life and property across North Carolina through Saturday morning.  Flooding swamps Asheville area as North Carolina mountains brace for Helene's life-threatening rainfall.

                                            Biltmore Village in North Carolina

Helene is forecast to cause significant impacts including flash flooding, numerous landslides, damaging debris flows, slope failures across steep terrain, and riverine flooding across portions of western North Carolina and portions of central North Carolina. Flooding may occur in areas that do not typically flood. All North Carolinians should be weather aware and prepared. Tropical storm force winds are possible across western North Carolina late Thursday into Friday. With already saturated soils, trees could fall causing widespread power outages. There is a potential for tornadoes with this storm system. Tornadoes from tropical systems can quickly spin up with little warning.

As of last night of 27th, power was gone in Deborah's home.  She's running on her generator.    During a power outage, you may be left without heating/air conditioning, lighting, hot water, or even running water. If you only have a cordless phone, you will also be left without phone service.  Report this morning is that 4 million people are without power.

“Helene threatens heavy rain, flash flooding, landslides, and damaging winds to the mountains and Piedmont areas of our state,” said Governor Cooper. “Now is the time for North Carolinians to prepare, make sure emergency kits are up-to-date and pay attention to the weather alerts in your area.”

The State Emergency Response Team is deploying equipment, personnel, and resources to support impacted communities, including, North Carolina Swift Water Rescue Teams and Urban Search and Rescue Teams, resources from the North Carolina National Guard, and specialized personnel for communications and incident management support.

North Carolina residents are advised to stay aware and keep a watch on the forecast. State officials advise these tips to make sure your family is personally prepared:

  • Have multiple ways to receive emergency information, including watches and warnings. Make sure emergency alerts are enabled on your cell phone and monitor local new outlets and the National Weather Service.
  • Ensure that you have multiple ways to receive warnings, especially with the potential for severe storms to be moving through during nighttime hours.
  • Have an emergency plan. Know where you would go if you need to evacuate, especially if you live in a flood prone area.
  • Gather emergency supplies or refresh your emergency kit. Visit ReadyNC.gov for info on how to build an emergency kit.
  • Never drive through flooded roadways or around barricades. Turn around. Don’t drown.
  • Make sure you know where to seek shelter if a tornado warning is issued for your area.
  • Check to see if your local emergency management office offers emergency alert services for its residents. You can visit your county government website for more information.
  • Avoid unnecessary travel. If you do not need to drive, stay home. You can find current roadway conditions by visiting DriveNC.Gov.
One can imagine what Noah's family went through and saw as they prepared their ARK from what North Carolina is going through, oh so many years apart, however.  .

Abraham's Ancestry-An Amazing Journey Through Time and Geography

 Nadene Goldfoot

The Garden of Eden, 5,783 years ago according to the Bible,  where Adam and Eve came from, was the factory.  It seems that it was located on the land mass of Africa, where so many bones of various eras of development have been found. Homo sapiens evolved in Africa from Homo heidelbergensis. They co-existed for a long time in Europe and the Middle East with the Neanderthals, and possibly with Homo erectus in Asia and Homo floresiensis in Indonesia, but are now the only surviving human species, the first we know about named in the bible:  Adam and Eve.

Adam was made, according to the Bible, in the image of G-d from the dust of the earth on the 6th day of creation which was the last work day of G-d because the 7th was his day of rest. .  His duty was the dominion over the rest of the animals on earth.  Eve was created out of one of Adam's ribs and was intended as a help/a partner for Adam, definitely a help in the creation of more humans.   Adam and Eve's first children were Cain and Abel. Seth was the 3rd child and lived for 912 years. The sons of Seth were the nomadic Sutho, shepherds,  tribes mentioned in the neighborhood of the Palestine-Syria frontier in about the 15th century BCE. It was Balaam (Num.24:17) who mentioned them.   They seem to have been related to the Hebrews.  They could be Abraham's cousins.    Cain killed Abel, the example of fighting between the nomadic shepherd and the settled agriculturalist.  Cain was accidentally killed by his own blind grandson, Lamech.  .

Abraham, the ancestor of Jews and their cousins, today's Muslims, are well documented in the Torah and its extension, the whole Tanakh.  His name was Abram and he lived in about 1948 BCE, born in Ur on the Tigris River of the Chaldees.

Abram's father was Terah and mother was Amathlai of Haran whose parents were  Nahor and Iyoska, going back:  Serug and Milcah, Reu, Peleg, Eber, Shelah, Arpachshad, Shem, and finally, Noah.

Noah's story is that he saved his family including his three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth,  by building an ark or ship before the great flood, and they managed for 40 days on it, landing on new land. If his father, Lamech and mother, Adah,  were alive, they were with Noah.  Lamech's father was Methuselah who lived for a very long time.  His father was Enoch, and was remembered in stories about Noah.    He had loaded it with all the animals he was familiar with, for he didn't know where they'd land and what lay before him. From his sons sprang the 1st 70 people (types or tribes) from whom humanity was derived.  This can also be read somewhat in the Babylonian tale of Gilgamesh, an epic that contains a parallel flood story with the hero called Utnapishtim.  many midrashic stories were woven around the story of Noah.  Therefore, we now have humanity moved to Turkey as hunters and gatherers of food.

This goes along with my father's Y haplogroup line of  Q's (QBZ67).  The origin was said to be in Siberia, Mongolia and parts of Turkey.  It's an ancient Jewish line-of which today is 5% of 0.02% of the world population, a very small group of men. Does this mean that they are one of the oldest groups of males that can trace back to Noah?

Q-M242-his genetic title originally;  is believed to have arisen around the Altai Mountains area (or South Central Siberia), approximately 17,000 to 31,700 years ago. However, the matter remains unclear due to limited sample sizes and changing definitions of Haplogroup Q: early definitions used a combination of the SNPs M242, P36.2, and MEH2 as defining mutations.)

J1, the Cohen gene, this haplogroup evolved ~ 20,000 years ago somewhere in northwestern Iran, the Caucasus, the Armenian Highland, and northern Mesopotamia. The major branch-J1a1a1-P58-evolved during the early Holocene ~ 9500 years ago somewhere in the Arabian Peninsula, the Levant, and southern Mesopotamia.) This seems to be the landing site of Noah's Ark as well.

The Middle East, and landing on Mt. Ararat:  The Garden of Eden could have come from Egypt for it's a country on Africa.  The Ark could have sailed over the Mediterranean onto Turkey during the Flood. Iraq was the scene of the tower of Babel of Babylon.

Even I must use Noah in our genealogy history, for he landed on Mt. Ararat, thought to be  located in extreme northeastern Turkey, near the borders with Iran and Armenia.  Nevertheless, Mount Ararat is traditionally considered the resting place of Noah's Ark, and, thus, considered a biblical mountain. Mount Ararat has been associated with the Genesis account since the 11th century, and Armenians began to identify it as the ark's landing place during that time.

That's where Abram, later called Abraham's ancestors came from.  They had come from the East and he had migrated west to Canaan with his family which included Terah, his father, and his wife, Sarai, later called Sarah. Sarah was his niece, which shows that they did marry into their own family.  Siblings did not marry in Abraham's group, though, like the Egyptian royalty did.

The beautiful plan of creation included giving male humans DNA that could be traced back to their beginning roots.  Abraham was the ancestor of Moses, born in 1391 BCE to Amram and Jochebed. Amram's father was Kohath, and went back to Levi, son of Jacob whose name changed to Israel, father of 12 sons who became the 12 Tribes of Israel.  Their DNA line is J1, called the Cohen gene, coming direct from Aaron, brother of Moses who would have been J1 as well.  Jacob's father was Isaac whose father was Abraham.

                                Sarah with Hagar, her handmaid

Abraham had a child with Hagar, Sarah's handmaid when Sarah was very old, past child-bearing age. Then she surprised everyone and did get pregnant and had Isaac.   The child Abraham had with Hagar was  called Ishmael. Hagar took her son and left the family due to all the in-fighting of the children, Ishmael and Isaac going on.

Isaac,  Abraham's son by Sarah  had twins, Jacob and Esau.   Jacob's fraternal twin, Esau,  fought with Jacob, having the opposite type of personality.  They were even enemies.  Esau left the family group and married with Others not related.  Jacob had fled to Haran and stayed there for 20 years before connecting with his brother once more.  The three most important men in our Jewish history were Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

How do people remember such facts, especially names?  We saw this happening in the Black tribe mentioned in the book, Roots: The Saga of an American Family is a 1976 novel written by Alex Haley. It tells the story of Kunta Kinte, an 18th-century African, captured as an adolescent, sold into slavery in Africa, and transported to North America; it follows his life and the lives of his descendants in the United States down to Haley.

Haley spent the last chapter of the book describing his research in archives and libraries to support his family's oral tradition with written records. If Haley's family line remembered facts orally, I believe ours could have used this method as well, possibly combined with written. If you're interested in your family, read this book, whoever you are.

Abraham's journey can be tracked by oral history and today's DNA.  That way we can see who he has left behind as descendants.

The Mesopotamian "Iraqi" Mizrachi Jews, Where Babylonia lies, Home of Abraham

The Mesopotamian "Iraqi" Jews, From the Land of Shinar

 Nadene Goldfoot

Iraq was originally  called Mesopotamia. It's where Babylonia lies.  In the Torah it was also known as the land of Shinar or of Kasdim (Chaldees), as in Ur of the Chaldees-the city that Abraham was from.    Jews of Iraq are the Mizrachi Jews.  There are the Ashkenazim of Europe, originally of Germany, and the Sephardim of Spain and Portugal, and the Mizrachim of the Middle East.  Jews had gone or stayed as the Mizrachim did after 70 CE and the Roman destruction.

The Torah says it was the cradle of humanity and also the scene of man's 1st revolt against G-d as we read about the Tower of Babel.  Many stories found in our Tanakh are found also in Babylonian literature such as the Flood story with Noah and his  Ark.

Abraham had migrated from the big city of Ur to Canaan where he later fought against Amraphel, king of Shinar (Gen. 14).  Babylon, another great city, had a bad reputation with our prophets, known as sin city and a symbol of insolent pagan tyranny.  The Babylonian Nebuchadnezzar II (604-56BCE) inherited the Assyrian empire, and after his conquest of Judah in (597-and 586 BCE) exiled many Jews to Babylon as slaves.

They in turn ran into the members of the Ten northern population of Israel who had been abducted 200 years earlier by the Assyrians.  Now there were a very large population of Jews living there against their will.  Many acclimated and of course, some of the younger generations knew very little about their history of why they were there, living in all Jewish cities such as Nehardea, Nisibis, and Mahoza.

Since the destruction of the First Temple there was a connection between Babylonian exiles and the Land of Israel. According to the Al-Yahudu Tablets, a collection of tablets from the sixth century BCE, multiple Jews were given names reflecting their families desire to return to Zion.  The Al-Yahudu tablets are a collection of about 200 clay tablets from the sixth and fifth centuries BCE on the exiled Judean community in Babylonia following the destruction of the First Temple. They contain information on the physical condition of the exiles from Judah and their financial condition in Babylon. The tablets are named after the central settlement mentioned in the documents, al-Yahudu (Akkadian: The city of Judah).

               Yemenite Jews

The earliest document in the collection dates back to 572 BCE, about 15 years after the destruction of the Temple, during the reign of Nebuchadnezzar II. The most recent tablet dates back to 477 BCE, during the reign of Xerxes I, about 60 years after the Return to Zion began and about 20 years before the rise of Ezra the Scribe.

The Jews were allowed to return to Jerusalem in 538 BCE, , but not all chose to leave as the 1st thing that the leadership wanted to do was to rebuild Solomon's Temple that Nebuchadnezzar had destroyed.  They would have to start the city from it's beginnings again, and in fact it was already re-populated by Samaritans and others that had been brought in by their captors, an exchange of population.  They got rid of slaves they were tired of and were hoping for a better batch of workers who were work-oriented, such as the northern tribes, they thought.

However, there were Jews there who did remember, and they were able to keep in touch with Jews back in Judah and even supplied some of their leaders like Hillel.

During the Roman occupation, the Babylonian Jews rose against the emperor, Trajan, the revolt being bloodily suppressed by his commander, Lucius Quietus in 116.  Under both Persian and Parthian rule, the Jews of Babylon enjoyed an extensive measure of internal autonomy, being headed by an Exilarch of Davidic descent who was the king's representative, while the community was governed by a council of elders.

The Jews of Babylon created the Babylonian Talmud that was rated higher than the Jerusalem Talmud.  It reflected a society mainly based on agriculture and crafts.  They were learned students in their Jewish studies and had produced works of literary merit by such people as Ezekiel, Daniel and  Tobit.

By the beginning of the 3rd century, Babylon became the main center of rabbinic studies.  They had academies that were founded by Samuel at Nehardea and by Rav at Sura, while in the later 3rd century, the academy of Purnbedita was founded to replace that at Hehardea which was destroyed in 261.  These schools were most important as they saw the abolition of the Palestinian patriarchate in 425 when Babylon became the spiritual center for all Jewry in the Middle East and possible even Europe as well, like Rome is for Catholicism.

The 5th century of the 400s was the start of much persecution against Jews which led to the Jewish revolt under Mar Zutra II who held out for 7 years, but was finally captured and killed. Mar-Zutra II was a Jewish Exilarch who led a revolt against the Sasanian rulers in 495 CE and achieved seven years of political independence in Mahoza. Mar-Zutra II became Exilarch of the Jewish community in Babylon at the age of fifteen in 483 CE, twelve years before the revolt. Wikipedia

This was when the Talmud was concluded about this period.  Jewish position in the world continued to be difficult until the Arab conquest in the 7th century after Mohammad had died in 632.  Can you imagine?  It was Arabs who ended the anti-Semitism of the others, coming to the Jews' rescue. The Jews had assisted the Arabs in the take-over of Babylonia in the hope that it would deliver them from Sassanid persecution.  After the Arab occupation, what happened to the Jews in Arabia?  Strangely, the Jews there, making up several tribes, were expelled, so they settled in Kufa.

For centuries, the land of today's Iraq continued to be the center of Jewish life.  The Exilarch and the Gaon (Jewish leadership) was recognized throughout the Diaspora (the world).  Jews wherever they lived would submit their religious questions to the Geonim whose answers were accepted as binding.  There was internal Jewish problems due to newly-founded sects of Issawites and Yudganites, and especially by the rise of Kasraism.

Then by 1040, their 2 famous academies were closed and Iraq lost her central position in the Jewish world, although Geonim are recorded in Baghdad as late as the 13th century.  The Jewish leader (Exilarchate) was suspended in 1040, and then restored 2 centuries later for a short period.

Jews suffered from restrictions laid down by Caliph Umar/Omar but weren't strictly observed by the Arab leadership.  Caliph Al-Muktadir in 908 allowed Jews to 2 state offices as physicians and bankers.  There were Jewish physicians, scientists and scholars among the Arab population.

Umar initially opposed Muhammad, his distant Qurayshite kinsman and later son-in-law. Following his conversion to Islam in 616, he became the first Muslim to openly pray at the Kaaba. Umar participated in almost all battles and expeditions under Muhammad, who bestowed the title al-Faruq ('the Distinguisher') upon Umar, for his judgements. After Muhammad's death in June 632, Umar pledged allegiance to Abu Bakr (r. 632–634) as the first caliph and served as the closest adviser to the latter until August 634, when the dying Abu Bakr nominated Umar as his successor.

On his orders, this 2nd Caliph ruled for 10 years and conquered Palestine, Syria and Mesopotamia.  Most of the Jews were expelled from N. Arabia, and also asked for more taxation from the Jews.  Omar set up the temporary structure situated on the traditional site of Mt. Moriah before the modern Mosque of Omar was built by Caliph Abd al-Malik in 738.

Because of heavy taxation on cultivated land, Jews left agriculture and concentrated in the larger towns, especially Baghdad, Basra and Mosul, where they mostly became traders and craftsmen.  Some were financiers or participated in international commerce.

                        Mongol Invaders

Benjamin of Tudela visited Iraq in 1170 and reported places with up to15,000 Jewish people.  Then the Mongols invaded the land in the 2nd half of the 13th century who were free from religious prejudice, the the Jewish position of being considered 2nd class citizens (Dhimmis) improved as they were no longer discriminated against because they were Jews, and even the highest state offices were now open to them.  But....

Mongol rulers became converted to Islam!  Then they introduced those old discriminating laws.  In 1291, the Jewish administrator and physician, Saad ad-Daula, was assassinated, and this was  followed by a general attack on the Jews of Iraq.  Nobody heard from them for  several centuries.

The city of Timur was invaded at the end of the 14th century and Jews suffered along with the rest of the population, and then along come the Turks and their conquest of Iraq in 1534 which bettered everyone economically.  The Turkish domination was of the Ottoman Empire, and it didn't take much for Jews to be treated badly by them.

                                   from Zeyad al-Ahmed

Many Iraqi Jews were doctors, pharmacists and journalists. The first Hebrew newspaper in the country, Hadover (“speaker” or “spokesman”), was printed by the first Hebrew printing press, established in 1863 by Musa Baruch Mizrahi. The Jews of Iraq had an Arabic dialect of their own, and they wrote books in Judeo-Arabic, written in Hebrew letters.

In 1914, the first Zionist organization was founded by Menashe Hakim, Maurice Fattal and Raphael Horesh under the name "Zionist Association of Baghdad", to promote the Zionist cause in Mesopotamia. The short-lived organization collapsed in November of that year when the Ottoman Empire declared  war on Britain.

Jews were appointed to high government offices and some served in the Iraqi army.  In 1932, Iraq gained their independence.   and this brought out persecution of the Jews.  At the time, Jewish leaders were speaking with the League of Nations in making Palestine the Jewish Homeland.

Rashid Ali al-Gaylani and
Haj Amin al-Husseini, speaking at the anniversary of the 1941 Iraqi coup in Berlin-right.
Prime Minister of Iraq, Rashid Ali  He is chiefly remembered as an ardent Arab nationalist who attempted to remove the British influence from Iraq by starting a coup against the government in 1941. During his brief tenures as Prime Minister in 1940 and 1941, he attempted to negotiate settlements with the Axis powers (Hitler) during World War II in order to counter British influence in Iraq.  WWII wasn't over until 1945.
Hundreds of Baghdad Jews were killed and wounded in a pogrom during the revolt of Rashid Ali al-Gaylani in 1941.

Iraqi troops participated in the 1948 attack on Israel on the central front. Despite their defeat, Iraq never concluded an armistice agreement with Israel.  the great majority of Iraqi Jews left the country, chiefly for Israel in Operation Ezra and Nehemiah, and their property in Iraq was confiscated, so they were left penniless.

123,000 Iraqi Jews reached Israel since 1948.  Those that remained were subject to severe restrictions, especially after the Six Day War of 1967 when the treatment of Iraqi Jews led to international protests.  The Jewish population in 1991 was 150 who had remained, chiefly in Baghdad, where one synagogue still operates. Egyptian Jews experienced the same situation, with a few remaining to caretake the synagogue and cemeteries.

Iraqi Jews in Israel, also known as the Bavlim (Hebrew for "Babylonians"), are immigrants and descendants of the immigrants of the Iraqi Jewish communities, who now reside within the state of Israel. They number around 450,000.  They live mostly in Or YehudaGivatayim and  Kiryat Gat.

Moshe Levi, IDF Chief of Staff (Hebrewמשה לוי, April 18, 1936 – January 8, 2008) was an Israeli military commander and the 12th Chief of Staff of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). He served in this position from 1983 to 1987, towards the end of the first Lebanon war and the establishment of the South Lebanon Security Belt. He was the first Chief of Staff of Mizrahi origin.  Levi, born in Tel Aviv to an Iraqi-Jewish family, was known by his army nickname Moshe VaHetzi (Hebrewמשה וחצי ("Moshe and a half") because of his towering height, which was about 1.96 metres (6 ft 5 in).  While serving as Chief of Staff and after retiring from the army, Levy lived in Kibbutz Beit Alfa in northern Israel. In his last years, he was the founding chairperson of the supervisory board of Highway 6, also known as the Trans-Israel Highway.

How Our Ancestors Developed: Comparing the Story of Noah to Today's DNA Findings

 Nadene Goldfoot

The three sons of Noah-We come from Shem.

I'm sitting pretty.  I admire and respect our history as told in the Torah, told to us by Moses who wrote it almost 3,000 years ago.  Knowing, as the teacher I am, that DNA is a brand new science and that we are just finding out more about ourselves, I am in awe at the similarities in our two resources.

Take for instance, the story of Noah, which is told to us by Moses.  We've discovered that clay tiles also tell a most similar story, found in Elba, an ancient city in Mesopotamia, near Ur, where Abraham was said to have come from.  Noah's story tells us that a man named Eber was the ancestor of both Abraham and Joktan.  I already knew that Abraham's father was Terah, as told in Genesis with Abraham.    Abraham was the ancestor of the Jewish people and Joktan was the ancestor of the Arabs.

Arabs will also tell you that Esau, twin brother of Isaac, is the father of the Arabs.  They were not identical twins, and Esau was born first, but Jacob and their mother, Rebecca, managed to cheat Esau out of his rights as a first son.  It was so close-twins, only a matter of minutes.  The birth-right was a big deal, a way of deciding who inherited the father's rights and property.  It was to go to only one son in those days.  Esau, a hunter, and Jacob, the farmer and cook, continued through life with this deception that Esau could not overlook.  It is a way of explaining the problems we have today with the Palestinians, a 3,000 year old incident that hasn't been pardoned till about 3 years ago with the Abrahamic Accords signed with 4 new Arab states now, along with Egypt and Jordan.  Only back then, how did Moses know there would continue to be problems?  Well, we know.  G-d knew.  It's mind-blowing.

The Abraham Accords are a series of treaties normalizing diplomatic relations between Israel, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Bahrain, Sudan, and Morocco, facilitated by the U.S. Administration[1] between August and December, 2020. In the span of five short months, these four Arab states joined Egypt and Jordan in making peace with Israel. The agreements were called “The Abraham Accords” in honor of Abraham - the patriarch of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.

Here our connection goes back to Eber.  Eber was a great-grandson of Noah's son Shem and the father of Peleg, born when Eber was 34 years old, and of Joktan. He was the son of Shelah, a distant ancestor of Abraham. According to the Hebrew Bible, Eber died at the age of 464.  This is all found in Genesis, the table of nations, that explains all our connections to each other.  The Arabs are the distant cousins of the Jewish people no matter which reference you use.

70 Nations are said to have come from these 3 sons.  There were 80 descendants of Noah (Song of songs 6:8) include the 74 named in the Tanakh chart 1/2028 (including both Nimrod and Pelishtim) as well as Peleg's son Reu, his son Nahor, his son Terah, his sons Nahor and Haran. (Some omit Nimrod from the count of 70 and instead include Pelishtim (Philistines).

What I know from DNA is that both males carry the J1, the Y haplotype, that Jews refer to as the Cohen gene. 3-Research shows that (J1) haplogroup makes about 72% of Yemen people, 34% of UAE people, 58% of Qatari people, 50% of Iraq people, 55% of Palestinian Arabs, 48% of Oman People, 34% of Tunisian, and 35% of Algerian. Rest of these countries populations is a mixture of Haplogroups. It's the gene that Aaron, brother of Moses, carried.  They Y haplogroup goes from father to son, on down the line, and has for these past 3,000 with only a few mutations that happen naturally.

Where and when did the J1 start?  1-(J1) Haplogroup is believed to have been generated some 10,000 years ago south of the Levant and in the heart of the Arabian Peninsula (Source is National Geographic Genetic Project)

I'm Jewish.  My Jewish father's Y haplogroup is one of the others, Q, (QBZ67) to be exact.  I had seen that some Arabs also carry this,  in Marsh Arabs who are known as the descendants of ancient Sumerians. Approximately 2.5% (4/157: 3 Q*, 1 Q-M346) of males in Saudi Arabia belong to haplogroup.  Then they came from Sumer, site of the earliest known civilization, located in the southernmost part of Mesopotamia, between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, in the area that later became Babylonia and is now southern Iraq, from around Baghdad to the Persian Gulf.  Well of course;  Abraham was from Ur practically on the Euphrates River. What I found was Haplogroup Q is found predominantly in Central Siberia, Central Asia and among Native Americans. Approximately 90% of pre-Columbian Native Americans belonged to haplogroup Q, and all descend from the branch Q1a2a1 (L54), including various subclades of Q1a2a1a1 (M3) and Q1a2a1a2 (Z780). In Europe haplogroup Q is found chiefly in southern Sweden (5%), among Ashkenazi Jews (5%), and is various isolated pockets in central and Eastern Europe such as the Rhône-Alpes region of France, southern Sicily, southern Croatia, northern Serbia, parts of Poland and Ukraine. Å arić et al. (2013) also found 6.1% of haplogroup Q out of 412 samples from the island of Hvar in southern Croatia (accompanied by 2% of East Asian mtDNA haplogroup F).

  • Q1b1a (L245): found in the Middle East, among the Jews, in Central Europe and in Sicily
    • Q1b1a1 (L272.1): found in Sicily (probably Phoenician
  • In a report published elsewhere, we recently showed that Jews and Palestinian Arabs share a large portion of their Y chromosomes, suggesting a common ancestry (Nebel et al. ). Surprisingly, in the present study, Jews were found to be even closer to populations in the northern part of the Middle East than to several Arab populations. It is worth mentioning that, on the basis of protein polymorphisms, most Jewish populations cluster very closely with Iraqis (Livshits et al. ) and that the latter, in turn, cluster very closely with Kurds (Cavalli-Sforza et al. ). These findings are consistent with known cultural links that existed among populations in the Fertile Crescent in early history.
One must remember that Iraq is the land of Mesopotamia, with Sumer, Babylon, Ur-home of Abraham.
We are said to be the closest to the Kurds in DNA.

Some Western Jews belong to Q-M378 as well. Q-M378's subbranch Q-L245's subclades Q-Y2200 and Q-YP1035 are the only varieties of haplogroup Q that are found in Ashkenazi Jews. Citizen scientists found that some Sephardic Jews carry different subclades of Q-L245, including Q-BZ3900, Q-YP745, and Q-YP1237.
