Math Scores Dropped Lowest Below 2005 Scores For 12th Graders

 Nadene Goldfoot

Newsweek reports that the "reading and math scores of 12th graders has dropped to their lowest level in more than 20 years, according to results from an exam known as the nation's report card."  This covers all of the USA.

                          Why It Matters

"The National Assessment of Education Progress (NAEP)—which is administered

by the   National Center for Education Statistics with the U.S. Department of Edu

cation—is considered one of the best gauges of the academic progress of U.S. schools.

The assessments were the first for 12th graders in reading and math and eighth

graders   in science since the COVID-19 pandemic upended education for children,

and reflect learning  declines that started well before the pandemic.

The results comes as children are increasingly spending time on smartphones and

social media, which experts have warned are contributing to a decline in academic

 performance."

"The nation's 12th-grade math scores have fallen to their lowest point since 2005,

with 45% of students scoring below the National Assessment of Educational

Progress (NAEP) "Basic" achievement level, a significant increase from previous

years. Only 33% of 12th graders were considered academically prepared for entry-

level college math coursework, a decline from 37% in 2019. These historic lows have

been exacerbated by factors like declining student attendance and a widening

achievement gap between high- and low-performing students."

Israeli students show major drop in math skills

Eighth-graders' score decreased by 30 points, resulting in a slide from 11th place internationally to 23rd, just behind the United States.

Israel has also prided itself with their children learning math way above their age level,

so their report is also reflecting a drop.

"Recent international tests show a significant decline in Israeli 12th graders' math

scores, with the TIMSS 2023 study revealing a sharp drop compared to the 2019

results and even the global average in the post-COVID periodIsraeli 8th-grade

students' scores fell dramatically, placing them 23rd in math and 25th in science, a

significant drop from 2019. The TIMSS assessment, which measures 8th-grade

math and science, and the PISA assessment, for 15-year-olds, are typically used to

report on student performance in Israel. The decline in scores is a broader trend

observed globally, but Israel's decline was more pronounced, and this trend is also

evident in 8th-grade science and math scores. The decline in scores highlights

broader issues in the Israeli education system, with disparities between different

 student populations remaining a concern.

This is common in both the USA and in Israel of the different populations and their dis

parities showing up the high and low performing students.  and their achievement gap.

Israeli eighth-grade students exhibited a significant decline in mathematics and science performance in 2023 over 2019, according to a report published Wednesday.

The 2023 Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study report, which looks at hundreds of thousands of school students in dozens of countries, had Israel falling from 9th to 23rd place internationally in math and from 16th to 25th in science since 2019.

I would say that both the USA and Israeli students are showing the results of their environment; war, technical competition to studying, concentration, and family back-ground.  It's up to families to see to it just as much as it is teachers and textbooks to take an interest in their studies. If parents are lacking in math skills, the children could remain lacking in those same skills as well.

Israelis go into service after 12th grade.  High school achievement is very important.

Singapore has consistently ranked as a top-performing country in international math assessments, particularly in the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) conducted in 2022, where it placed first. Other high-ranking countries in recent tests often include other East Asian economies like China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Japan.
