What should be the most highly educated students attending Columbia University is turning out to show the world they have the worst instructors, professors and students instead. Look whose philosophy has taken over the school ! They haven't done any research nor have they understood anything about Gaza and what's happening to their politics, and that's okay for the general public, but not for a university !!!
Columbia University has a long history with Jewish students, including instances of both inclusivity and discrimination. While the university's early years saw relative openness to Jewish students, the 20th century witnessed discriminatory practices, including limits on Jewish admissions. Today, Columbia has a strong Jewish presence with a vibrant Hillel chapter and a dedicated Jewish center. However, the university has also faced accusations of antisemitism, particularly in recent years, related to the Israel-Palestine conflict. Thus, the Palestinians on campus demonstrating.
Columbia UniversityColumbia started off giving fairness to Jews. Unlike many Ivy League institutions, Columbia did not restrict its student body to Christian students and had Jewish graduates as early as the 1770s. Columbia had a notable collection of Hebrew books and scholars early on, placing it among the top institutions for Judaica. Despite its relative openness, Columbia faced challenges in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, including pressure to limit Jewish admissions and instances of discrimination because there was much anti-Semitism in the world leading to the Holocaust. In 1920, Columbia University had a 40% Jewish enrollment rate according to Oliver Pollak. Around this time, Columbia imposed quotas on Jewish students in restrict the number of Jews, a practice that quickly expanded to many other prominent American universities.
My father's 1st cousin, Gaulda Jermulowske, received her Masters at Columbia in social work. Gaulda (1916-1999) was from Portland, Oregon. We were very proud of her. Her undergraduate work was by graduating Reed College in Portland.
According to Inside Higher Ed, the Jewish student population at Columbia is around 22.3%, indicating a large drop because of these anti-Semitic events but still a significant Jewish presence on campus. Jewish population in the USA is very small, only 2% of the population.
The university was sued by Jewish students which said that in the university “mobs of pro-Hamas students and faculty march by the hundreds shouting vile antisemitic slogans, including calls to genocide.”
It's hard to accept that there remains this constant hatred of Jews, either in the Middle East or in the USA. Our calling card says: "TO LIFE !" Our parents insist on our education and doing our best in it; and many favor either law or comedy; We even applauded the Golden Rule-created by Hillel-a man a building was named for at Columbia, by the way with Jews saying it in the negative form of "Don't do to others what you wouldn't want done to you...." Hillel was Jewish, born in Babylon in the 1st century BCE (BC) to others) , called, "The Elder."
