Spotlighting Oshri Cohen, Israeli Actor

 Nadene Goldfoot

TV is an important vehicle for rest and recreation in Israel as it is in the USA.  Oshri Cohen, 5'9" tall,  is an actor and director from Lod, also called Lydda, Israel where he was born on 11 January 1984 while I  was living in Safed, teaching English.  Lod is one of Israel's major transportation hubs. Israel's main international airport, Ben Gurion Airport, is located 8 km (5 miles) north of the city.  The Jewish immigrants who settled Lod came in waves, first from Morocco and Tunisia, later from Ethiopia, and then from the former Soviet Union. As a result, the city's logo (coat of arms) is inscribed with Biblical words from Jeremiah 31:17: "The children will return to their country."

In addition to television roles, Cohen has performed in films such as Bonjour Monsieur Shlomi and Campfire.  In "Bonjour" he won the 2003  Ophir award as best actor. The web says we can watch Bonjour free on the web. it's also on Netflix and amazon Prime Time for a fee.

Shlomi takes care of everyone. He feeds his grandfather, bathes him and listens to his fictitious stories from World War II. He reminds his older brother to take his medication on time and intently listens to his pornographic thoughts. He calms his quick-tempered mother and mediates between her and his hypochondriac father who was thrown out of the house after cheating on her. He looks after his older sister`s twins and makes sure she keeps going back to her husband who can`t tell between the identical babies.

And most of all, Shlomi makes sure to make everyone happy by cooking their favorite dishes. Shlomi knows they'll eat and calm down. Because his home is a battlefield and Shlomi runs around between everyone, making peace. But no one in the family really sees Shlomi. Even Shlomi doesn`t see Shlomi. Until one day a routine math test arouses the suspicions of Shlomi`s math teacher and school principal. After meeting and talking with him, they realize that a very unique personality is hiding behind this neglected and dormant boy. With their help and the help of Rona the gardener with whom he falls head over heels in love, Shlomi discovers himself. BONJOUR MONSIEUR SHLOMI is a heartening family comedy, a surprising love story, which focuses on the captivating character of one boy blessed with extraordinary cooking talents, who discovers through the power of love that the sky is the limit.

In 2006 he won the Israeli Theater's Promise of the Year award for "The Indian Patient."

Homeland (stylized as HOMƎLAND) is an American espionage thriller television series based on the Israeli series Prisoners of War (HebrewחטופיםromanizedHatufim, literally "Abductees") which was created by Gideon Raff, who serves as an executive producer on Homeland.   The series stars Claire Danes as Carrie Mathison, CIA officer with bipolar disorder, and Damian Lewis as Nicholas Brody, a Marine Corps Scout Sniper. Brody was held captive by al-Qaeda as a prisoner of war, and Mathison becomes convinced that he was "turned" by the enemy and poses a threat to the United States. The series storyline grows from this premise, together with Mathison's ongoing covert work.

The series was broadcast in the U.S. on cable channel Showtime, and was produced by Fox 21 Television Studios (formerly Fox 21). It premiered on October 2, 2011. The series' eighth and final season premiered on February 9, 2020. The finale aired on April 26, 2020.
