Our Jewish Genes As the Geneticists See them

 Nadene Goldfoot

Recent studies have been conducted on a large number of genes, homologous chromosomes or autosomes (all chromosomes except chromosomes X and Y). We have 23 chromosomes and the X and Y, the 23rd, are the sex genes with X being female and Y being the male line.   Actually, we have 46; 23 from each parent.

These 46 chromosomes carry the genetic information that’s passed from parent to child through heredity. It is the very detail of this genetic material – in the DNA – that makes most people (other than identical siblings) totally unique.

The total number of chromosomes in an organism, such as an animal or plant, is important and differs for different species. Some insects, for instance, only have one or two chromosomes. Meanwhile, giraffes have 62, chickens have 78, mice have 40, cabbages 18, and strawberries only 14. Humans, like many other species, are called ‘diploid’. This is because our chromosomes exist in matching pairs – with one chromosome of each pair being inherited from each biological parent.

Every cell in the human body contains 23 pairs of such chromosomes; our diploid number is therefore 46, our ‘haploid’ number 23. Of the 23 pairs, 22 are known as autosomes. The 23rd pair is made up of the sex chromosomes, called the ‘X’ and ‘Y’ chromosome. This is the pair of chromosomes that is responsible for ‘sex-linked’ medical conditions that pass through some families, such as the blood disorder haemophilia, which affects mainly males. Females have a pair of X chromosomes, males have an X and Y chromosome.

A 2009 study was able to genetically identify individuals with full or partial Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry.

Harry Ostrer is a medical geneticist who investigates the genetic basis of common and rare disorders. In the diagnostic laboratory, he translates the findings of genetic discoveries into tests that can be used to identify people's risks for disease prior to occurrence, or for predicting its outcome once it has occurred. He is also known for his study, writing and lectures on the origins of the Jewish people.

He is a Professor of Pathology and Genetics at Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University and Director of Genetic and Genomic Testing at Montefiore Medical Center.

For the prior 21 years he was Professor of Pediatrics, Pathology and Medicine and Director of the Human Genetics Program at New York University School of Medicine.

In August 2012, Dr. Harry Ostrer in his book Legacy: A Genetic History of the Jewish People, summarized his and other work in genetics of the last 20 years, and concluded that all major Jewish groups share a common Middle Eastern origin. Ostrer also refuted the Khazar hypothesis of Ashkenazi ancestry.

Citing autosomal DNA studies, Nicholas Wade estimates that "Ashkenazic and Sephardic Jews have roughly 30 percent European ancestry, with most of the rest from the Middle East." He further noticed that "The two communities seem very similar to each other genetically, which is unexpected because they have been separated for so long." Concerning this relationship he points to Atzmon's conclusions that "the shared genetic elements suggest that members of any Jewish community are related to one another as closely as are fourth or fifth cousins in a large population, which is about 10 times higher than the relationship between two people chosen at random off the streets of New York City".

Concerning North African Jews, autosomal genetic analysis in 2012 revealed that North African Jews are genetically close to European Jews. This finding "shows that North African Jews date to biblical-era Israel, and are not largely the descendants of natives who converted to Judaism,

" Y DNA studies examine various paternal lineages of modern Jewish populations. Such studies tend to imply a small number of founders in an old population whose members parted and followed different migration paths.

In most Jewish populations, these male line ancestors appear to have been mainly Middle Eastern. For example, Ashkenazi Jews share more common paternal lineages with other Jewish and Middle Eastern groups than with non-Jewish populations in areas where Jews lived in Eastern Europe, Germany and the Rhine Valley. This is consistent with Jewish traditions in placing most Jewish paternal origins in the region of the Middle East.

Doron M. Behar, Founder and CEO of Igentify | Genetics and genomics enthusiast | Committed to advancing the digital genomic revolution, Haifa, Israel, said, "I am a population geneticist and physician dedicated to changing the way that genetic information is uncovered and used. I’m working to bring digital health, genomics, and technology together, alongside my colleagues at Igentify. We help clinicians, laboratories, and patients access, interpret, and use genetic information and education more effectively. I’m proud to lead Igentify in its work generating optimism for change and synergizing the genomic and digital revolutions. I enjoy collaborating with others who share our vision for actionable and accessible genomic data for all.

A study conducted in 2013 by Doron  M. Behar,

MD, PhD et al. found no evidence of a Khazar origin for Ashkenazi Jews and suggested that "Ashkenazi Jews share the greatest genetic ancestry with other Jewish populations, and among non-Jewish populations, with groups from Europe and the Middle East. No particular similarity of Ashkenazi Jews with populations from the Caucasus is evident, particularly with the populations that most closely represent the Khazar region. In this view, analysis of Ashkenazi Jews, together with a large sample from the region of the Khazar Khaganate, corroborates earlier results that Ashkenazi Jews derive their ancestry primarily from populations of the Middle East and Europe, that they possess considerable shared ancestry with other Jewish populations, and that there is no indication of a significant genetic contribution either from within or from north of the Caucasus region."
 THE CANAANITES

A 2020 study on remains from Bronze Age southern Levantine (Canaanite) populations found evidence of large scale migration from the Zagros or Caucasus into the southern Levant by the Bronze Age and increasing over time (resulting in a Canaanite population descended from both those migrants and earlier Neolithic Levantine peoples).

The results were found to be consistent with several Jewish groups (including Mizrahi, Ashkenazi, and Sephardic Moroccan Jews) and non-Jewish Arabic-speaking Levantine populations (such as Lebanese, Druze, Palestinians, and Syrians) deriving about half or more of their ancestry from populations related to those from the Bronze Age Levant and Chalcolithic Zagros. The study modeled the aforementioned groups as having ancestry from both ancient populations. (So it's the non-Jewish genes they share.)

Approximately 35% to 43% of Jewish men are in the paternal line known as haplogroup J and its sub-haplogroups. This haplogroup is particularly present in the Middle East and Southern Europe. 15% to 30% are in haplogroup E1b1b, (or E-M35) and its sub-haplogroups which is common in the Middle East, North Africa, and Southern Europe.

                                        Israeli Jews

Israeli Jews belong by and large to the Ashkenazi (German, Central and Eastern European) division of world Jews, although there are minority representations from the Sephardic (Spanish) and Mizrahi (Middle Eastern) divisions. They number over 6 million inhabitants and comprise 75% of the population of the Middle Eastern state of Israel, founded in 1949. The overwhelming majority are non-Haredi or not strictly Orthodox by religion. Ethnically and genetically, they derive from European populations that were largely eliminated during the Holocaust and are thus no longer present in significant numbers in present-day European nations. European Jewry after World War II was transplanted and has been divided almost equally between Israel and the United States. See Demographics of Israel.

The Israeli Jews population data represent DNA samples from 163 unrelated mixed Jewish Caucasians of both sexes obtained by the Department of Human Genetics, Tel-Aviv University, Israel in 2004. A European Standard Set (ESS) of DNA loci was used, compiling allele distributions for 10 short tandem repeat (STR) polymorphic markers as used in forensic and paternity testing with the commercial AmpFISTR SGM Plus kit developed by Applied Biosystems.

Treasures of Jewish Art: From the Jacobo and Asea Furman Collection of Judaica, possibly Sepharic

In 1992 G. Lucotte and F. David were the first genetic researchers to have documented a common paternal genetic heritage between Sephardi and Ashkenazi Jews. Another study published just a year later suggested the Middle Eastern origin of Jewish paternal lineages.

Michael Hammer, PhD, is a professor and research scientist.  Dr. Hammer is a Research Scientist in the ARL Division of Biotechnology at the University of Arizona with joint appointments in Neurology and Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, and is a member of the Steele Children’s Research Center, Bio5, and the Arizona Cancer Center. Dr. Hammer’s research spans the fields of medical genetics and human population genetics. For the past 20 years, Dr. Hammer’s group has published over 100 articles documenting the African origin of human diversity, interbreeding between modern humans and archaic forms of the genus Homo, and genome diversity in the great apes. In the last 3 years, his research team has successfully employed next generation sequencing technologies to identify genetic variants causing neurodevelopmental disorders in undiagnosed children. This has led to the publication of articles identifying pathogenic variants associated with early onset epileptic encephalopathies. His lab is also pursuing studies to identify modifier genes that alter the expression of major genes and how they contribute to the molecular basis of clinical variability in Mendelian disorders.

In 2000, Michael Hammer, PhD,, et al. conducted a study on 1,371 men and definitively established that part of the paternal gene pool of Jewish communities in Europe, North Africa and Middle East came from a common Middle East ancestral population. They suggested that most Jewish communities in the Diaspora remained relatively isolated and endogamous compared to non-Jewish neighbor populations.

Investigations made by Nebel et al. on the genetic relationships among Ashkenazi Jews, Kurdish and Sephardi (North Africa, Turkey, Iberian Peninsula, Iraq and Syria) indicate that Jews are more genetically similar to groups in the northern Fertile Crescent (Kurds, Turks and Armenians) than their Arab neighbors, and suggest that some of this difference might be due to migration and admixture from the Arabian peninsula during the last two millennia (into certain current Arabic-speaking populations). Considering the timing of this origin, the study found that "the common genetic Middle Eastern background (of Jewish populations) predates the ethnogenesis in the region and concludes that the Y chromosome pool of Jews is an integral part of the genetic landscape of Middle East.

                       Priestly families:Cohanim

Nephrologist Dr. Karl Skorecki decided to analyze the Cohanim to see if they were the descendants of one man, in which case they should have a set of common genetic markers.

To test this hypothesis, he contacted Dr. Michael Hammer of the University of Arizona, a researcher in molecular genetics and a pioneer in research on chromosomes. Their article, published in Nature in 1997, has had some impact. A set of special markers (called Cohen Modal Haplotype or CMH) was defined as one which is more likely to be present in the Cohanim, defined as contemporary Jews named Cohen or a derivative, and it was proposed that this results from a common descent from the ancient priestly lineage than from the Jewish population in general.

But, subsequent studies showed that the number of genetic markers used and the number of samples (of people saying Cohen) were not big enough. The last study, conducted in 2009 by Hammer and Behar et al., says 20 of the 21 Cohen haplogroups have no single common young haplogroup; five haplogroups comprise 79.5% of all haplogroups of Cohen. Among these first 5 haplogroups, J-P58 (or J1E) accounts for 46.1% of Cohen and the second major haplogroup, J-M410 or J2a accounts for 14.4%.

Hammer and Behar have redefined an extended CMH haplotype as determined by a set of 12 markers and having as "background" haplogroup determining the most important lines J1E (46.1%). This haplotype is absent among non-Jews in 2009 analyzed in the study. This divergence would appear to be from 3000 ± 1000 years ago. This study nevertheless confirms that the current Cohen lineage descended from a small number of paternal ancestors.

In the summary of their findings the authors concluded that " Our estimates of the coalescence time also lend support to the hypothesis that the extended CMH represents a unique founding lineage of the ancient Hebrews that has been paternally inherited along with the Jewish priesthood."

Molecular phylogenetics research published in 2013 and 2016 for Levant haplogroup J1 (J-M267) places the Y-chromosomal Aaron within subhaplogroup Z18271, age estimate 2638–3280 years Before Present (yBP). Moses was born in 1391 BCE, so Aaron, his brother, was born in 1395 BCE, which was 3,417 years ago., fitting in with 3,280 time frame of the scientists.

The Lemba of South Africa, a Bantu speaking people whose culture forbids pork and requires male circumcision, have high frequencies of the Middle Eastern Y-chromosome HgJ-12f2a (25%), a potentially SEA Y, Hg-K(xPQR) (32%) and a Bantu Y, E-PN1 (30%) (similar to E-M2). The Lemba tribe of Venda in South Africa claims to be Jewish and to have originated in Sena – possibly Yemenite Sena in Wadi Masila of the Hadramaut. There are indications of genetic connections with the Hadramaut, i.e., the Lemba Y-chromosomes and Hadramaut Y-chromosomes showed overlap. In addition, there was also present a Cohen Modal Haplotype (CMH) within their subclan, the Buba – higher than the general Jewish population. It has been suggested by Tudor Parfitt and Yulia Egorova that their Jewish ancestors probably came along with general Semitic incursions into East Africa from South Arabia, and then moved slowly south through the area of Great Zimbabwe.

Queen of Sheba Ethiopian Jews and One of the Lost Ten Tribes, The Lemba of Africa

 Nademe Goldfoot

Samaria today was northern Israel.   Samaria was the name of their capital  after the Civil War when Solomon died and then the whole area came to be called Samaria. Their last king was Hoshea (730-721 BCE) when the Assyrians had attacked. He finally rebelled against the Assyrians and was put in prison by Shalmaneser who then captured Samaria.

Now called the West Bank by some, Judea and Samaria were separated from the tribe of Judah, parts of Benjamin and parts of Simeon when King Solomon died in 920 BCE and the northern 10 Tribes parted ways from the southern end of these three of which Judah was the largest.  They even fought a Civil War.

Then Assyria ( name means land bathed in blood)  attacked in 721 BCE.  Assyria turns out to be today's Iraq and Syria. They were a most aggressive kingdom in the 20th century BCE and expanded rapidly from the 13th to 19th centuries.  The kings of Israel thought they were friends and had worked together, until Assyria attacked them and carried away the best of the population for their own designs.

This caused what was later called the Ten Lost Tribes of Israel.   It was when Shalmaneser III attacked Ben-Hadad II of Damascus in 853 BCE that King Ahab of Israel (876-853 BCE)  had supported them in the battle of Karkar.   Following that, King Hosea of Israel (730 to721 BCE), Israel's last king, in 726 BCE tried to throw off the yoke which led to Shalmaneser V's siege of Samaria and its capture in 721 by his successor, Sargon.  Sargon annexed the country and deported 27,290 Israelites to Assyria and Media and replaced them with Syrian and Babylonian prisoners.  This was followed up with the revolt of Ashdod that was supported by King Hezekiah of Judah (720 to 692 BCE)  that was suppressed in 715 BCE.

We have discovered the Lemba tribe of Africa.  They have been practicing Judaism.  How can this be that a black tribe is Jewish?  They took the proper DNA test and their Y haplogroup (male line) shows that not only are they sharing Jewish genes, but those of the Cohens, the priests, J1 haplogroup.  Evidently Jewish traders went into Africa and took native wives, and now there are    Lemba tribesmen who are Jewish.  "Many of the Lemba, who number more than 50,000 people, are Christians, but they see no contradiction in professing Judaism, too. "

Dr. Parfitt visited their homes, which are in northern South Africa and Zimbabwe.  Author of "The Lost Ark Of The Covenant," Of their tradition, they reported, "''We came from the north, from a place called Senna. We left Senna, we crossed Pusela, we came to Africa and there we rebuilt Senna.'' Parfitt was in Yemen and told a Jewish leader their story.  "mentioned the Lemba tradition of Senna to the religious leader of the holy city of Tarim. The leader was surprised to hear it because, he told Dr. Parfitt, there was a nearby village called Senna." So their original people could have come from Jewish Yemen Cohenim who were traders in Africa.

The Queen of Sheba had left her home in Ethiopia and traveled to meet King Solomon,  With her she brought frankincense, myrrh, gold and precious jewels. King Solomon had heard of Sheba and her great kingdom.

Josh Bernstein,  of the TV program, Digging For The Truth on History.com, is an Israeli-born anthropologist with Israeli parents,  explorer, author, executive producer, survival expert and TV host whose program I watched on Youtube which was on The Quest for King Solomon's gold and frankincense.

This documentary series travels the globe to explore and delve deeper into ancient mysteries such as the Lost Ark of the Covenant, the building of the pyramids of Egypt and the long quest for the Holy Grail. The host, Josh Bernstein, is the main explorer for the first three seasons before being replaced by Hunter Ellis.    He later appeared for one season as the host of the Discovery Channel's Into the Unknown with Josh Bernstein. He's great; evidently American raised.

Zimbabwe used to be southern Rhodesia.  Up north see Suez Canal, and the land along the Mediterranean Sea is unmarked but is Israel.  That's where the Lemba have been living.

He followed the trail to see frankincense being separated from dirt, being finished off as it would have been done 3,000 years ago.  What impressed me was that anytime Josh saw people working on his subject, he would offer to do some of the work, too.  That was quite an experience, and the native people enjoyed and admired him for doing just this.  Then he tracked down where Solomon's mines were, only to find the the mine in Israel produced copper but not gold.  Maybe that's why Sheba's gift of so much gold was so appreciated.  The gold of Sheba was traced to Ophir in the Bible which turns out to be today's Axum. Axum or Aksum (pronounced: /ˈæksuːm/) is a town in the Tigray Region of Ethiopia with a population of 66,900 residents (as of 2015). It is the site of the historic capital of the Aksumite Empire, a naval and trading power that ruled the whole region from about 400 BCE into the 10th century. Solomon (961-920 BCE) was king, and alluring to Sheba, so it was ruled by Sheba during this time also, way before 400 BCE if we are to believe where her gold came from.

In the Bible, sailors for Sheba would be gone for 3 years and return with ivory and apes along with gold, true traders.

He had to track down where Sheba had really come from; whether it was Ethiopia or Zimbabwe (southern Rhodesia) , and it was Ethiopia.

A leader of the Lemba people, wearing a prayer shawl, gathers with his fellow Jews. DNA tests have confirmed the Semitic heritage of these sub-Saharan Africans.

Jekesai Njikizana /AFP/Getty Images

The Lemba tribe has the Cohen DNA, but the Ethiopians do not yet show they have the connecting DNA to the Jewish people.   Tudor Parfitt spoke of the Lemba in his book about the Ark.  Though the Lemba may be descended from Jewish ancestors, they have not practiced Judaism for many centuries. Lately, some have wanted to shift towards mainstream Judaism. Today, many Lemba are Christians or Muslims.  Ethiopians have returned to Israel through several air lifts and many past years. They have kept up Jewish cultural practices better than most American Jews besides their personal history of genealogical connection to the Queen of Sheba. A study of Lucotte and Smets has shown, however, that the genetic father of Beta Israel (Ethiopian Jews) was close to the Ethiopian non-Jewish populations. This is consistent with the theory that Beta Israel are descendants of ancient inhabitants of Ethiopia, not the Middle East.

Cucumbers and Our Health: As mentioned in Bible and Eaten In Egypt

 Nadene Goldfoot

Numbers 11:4  On the Exodus,  Dissatisfied with eating only manna,, the Children of Israel also wept once more, and said, "who will feed us....we remember the cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions, and garlic.  But now, our life is parched, there is nothing, we have nothing to anticipate but the manna!"  ( This is the first acknowledgement of needing inns on roads for the travelers who offer food and shelter.).  People will have to wait for about 1,000 years to see this happen.  Inns in Europe were possibly first established when the Romans built their system of Roman roads two millennia ago. Many inns in Europe are several centuries old. In addition to providing for the needs of travelers, inns traditionally acted as community gathering places.

Our bodies need to be hydrated.  Cucumbers add water and are a help to stay hydrated. They may not have realized this, but eating cucumbers added to their abilities to go longer without another drink.  They are healthy  to us in many other ways.  They even kill bad breath !  They didn't peel them; the whole cucumber is healthy.  Cucumbers are actually a fruit, not a veggie; thus in the family with watermelons.   They didn't need vitamin pills because they ate cucumbers.

They are low in calories but contain many important vitamins and minerals, as well as a high water content. Eating cucumbers may lead to many potential health benefits, including weight loss, balanced hydration, digestive regularity and lower blood sugar levels.

                               Gathering manna

(My thought is that manna contained all the nutrients needed,, just like cucumbers, except a lot of water like the cucumber.)  Otherwise, they could not have continued on for 40 years on just manna.  It had to be nutritious like food for today's astronauts.)

(Heb. kishshuim). This word occurs in (Numbers 11:5) as one of the good things of Egypt produces excellent cucumbers, melons, etc., the Cucumis chate being the best of its tribe yet known. Besides the Cucumis chate , the common cucumber (C. sativus), of which the Arabs distinguish a number of varieties, is common in Egypt.

This vegetable is extensively cultivated in the East at the present day, as it appears to have been in earlier times among the Hebrews. It belongs to the gourd family of plants. In the East its cooling pulp and juice are most refreshing. "We need not altogether wonder that the Israelites, wearily marching through the arid solitudes of the Sinaitic peninsula, thought more of the cucumbers and watermelons of which they had had no lack in Egypt, rather than of the cruel bondage which was the price of these luxuries." Groser's Scripture Natural History.

Also mentioned: Isaiah 1:8 And the daughter of Zion is left as a cottage in a vineyard, as a lodge in a garden of cucumbers, as a besieged city.

        Farming cucumbers today
From Israel:
And, speaking of the science of Life, have you got the cucumber sandwiches cut for Lady Bracknell?  Oscar Wilde, The Importance of Being Earnest

Cucumbers grow in our greenhouse all winter – a single winter child of the Cucurbit family. In a short time, he will be joined by all the cousins, nieces and nephews from this very prominent family – the first to visit us in springtime. So just before he is smothered with hugs and kisses from those who missed him over winter, we’re happy to provide the cucumber with its seven minutes of solo fame:

Cucumbers originated in the heart of the Indian subcontinent. This very ancient domesticated vegetable has been raised by the human farmer for over 3,000 years. By virtue of being so ancient, today there is almost no place in the world where a wild cucumber grows.  This versatile veggie spread to China, North Africa, Europe and the Middle East even before written documentation could be had. The Biblical Hebrews craved it when they went out of Egypt—their mouths watered as they “remember… the squash,” but they actually are referring to “cucumbers” and not the squash we know today. But this is not the only complicated part. The Hebrew word Melafefon derives from the Greek melopepon – meaning ‘an apple melon,’ which probably refers to squash or melon…

Henry Baker Tristram FRS (11 May 1822 – 8 March 1906) was an English clergyman, Bible scholar, traveller,,,  As a parson-naturalist he was an early supporter of Darwinism, attempting to reconcile evolution and creation...appointed a fellow of the Royal Society in 1868. Edward Bartlett, an English ornithologist and son of Abraham Dee Bartlett, accompanied Tristram to Palestine in 1863–1864.
If Tristram had checked out the Ashkenazi Jews, he would have seen
that they enjoyed dill pickles, which are cucumbers.

"Both Cucumis chate and C. sativus ," says Mr. Tristram, "are now grown in great quantities in (Palestine)  . On visiting the Arab school in Jerusalem (1858) I observed that the dinner which the children brought with them to school consisted, without exception, of a piece of barley cake and a raw cucumber, which they ate rind and all."

The "lodge in a garden of cucumbers," (Isaiah 1:8) is a rude temporary shelter erected in t he open grounds where vines, cucumbers, gourds, etc., are grown, in which some lonely man or boy is set to watch, either to guard the plants from robbers or to scare away the foxes and jackals from the vines.  Isaiah speaks of a "lodge" (1:8; Hebrews sukkah), i.e., a shed or edifice more solid than a booth, for the protection throughout the season from spring to autumn of the watchers in a "garden of cucumbers."

The sukkah is something Israelites were told to erect on their Exodus trek as well, and is something that Jews will erect each year during Sukkot, the holiday that follows Yom Kippur, where each family builds a sukkah, eats in it and even sleeps in it.  It's much easier to do in Israel than in the Pacific Northwest as the weather complies in Israel.  The sides are made of colorful rugs, and the roof are cut branches so that the sky can be seen.  You invite your friends into yours and you drink tea and eat breads and cakes, cookies, etc, and enjoy the time.  School is on vacation during this time.

Tutankhamun (sometimes called “King Tut”) was an ancient Egyptian king. He ruled from 1333 BCE until his death in 1323 BCE.  The tomb of Tutankhamun is best known for the magnificent golden artifacts found inside it. Lesser known are the foodstuffs that would have made the copious feast that he took with him to the grave. These included emmer wheat, garlic, chickpeas, lentils, cumin, watermelon, fenugreek and coriander seeds, figs, dates, dum palm fruits, Christ thorn, pomegranates, juniper berries, and almonds. Some of these were typical food in ancient Egypt, but others, such as the almonds, may have been foreign imports.

Bread was the basic staple of the Egyptian diet. Every tomb owner’s first wish from those still alive passing by the tomb was 1,000 loaves of bread. From archaeological remains, art and texts, we know that the loaves could be made in many fanciful shapes, such as obelisks, geese, cattle, gazelles, humans, flowers, vases, fruit, and geometric shapes. Perhaps we can say the ancient Egyptians invented the animal cracker! Some of these loaves may have been meant to stand in as temple and tomb offerings for the more costly items that they represented.

The ancient Egyptians are well-known for their love of beer and it formed the second staple of their diet. Men, women, and children alike drank beer. Although children were introduced to beer drinking at a young age, school teachers warned young scribes in training against the intoxicating effects of alcohol by dictating such lines as the following to be written down by the student:

Did Abraham ever eat cucumbers?  He was born in about 1948 BCE, so the time between Abraham and Moses was a good 637 years.  He was born in Ur of the Chaldees in Mesopotamia near the Euphrates River and had take a long trip himself to Canaan.  He visited Egypt, then returned and lived in Hebron.  He even fought with the king of Elam.  He may have.  cucumber-growing has spread all over, even to Oregon and California.

According to some historians, the Exodus took place starting in 1445 BCE.  According to the Jewish calendar, Moses was born in 1391 and died in 1271 BCE.  He had returned to Egypt to lead the Israelites to Canaan when he was 80 years old which would have been in 1311 BCE.   Those Israelites on the Exodus never cried out for beer, or at least that was left out in the writing.  Perhaps slaves were passed over when drinks were given out when slaves in Egypt. Egyptians did have wine in those days as well for citizens. Well, they had cucumbers to keep them refreshed.
