Tonight's Two Day Holidays Begin in Israel: Of Mourning and Celebrating

Tonight (Tuesday, April 29, 2025) begins Yom Hazikaron, the day of remembrance for the soldiers, police and members of the security services who fell defending Israel as well as for the victims of terror.

On April 29, 2025, in Israel, Yom Hazikaron, the Israeli Memorial Day, is commemorated with solemn ceremonies and observances. This includes placing the national flag on graves of fallen soldiers, lighting torches, and observing moments of silenceThe date is just before the celebration of the anniversary of Israel's creation according to the Jewish calendar. 

Israel's Memorial Day, Yom HaZikaron, began in 1951 as a separate day of remembrance for soldiers who fell in the War of Independence, distinct from the festive Independence Day. This separate day was established after families of fallen soldiers expressed a desire for a specific day of mourning. In January 1951, the Public Council for Soldiers' Commemoration was formed to recommend establishing the 4th of Iyyar (the day before Independence Day) as the General Memorial Day. This proposal was approved by the government the same year. Israel has been remembering for the past 74 years out of its 77 years established.  .  



 It is followed on Wednesday night by Yom Ha'atzmaut, Israel's 77th Independence Day, in USA on April 30,2025. The number 77 spelled out in Hebrew spells "Strength". May this be a year of physical and spiritual strength for Israel and the entire Jewish nation.

However, to avoid Sabbath desecration, it may be commemorated one or two days before or after the 5th of Iyar if it falls too close to the Sabbath. The day preceding Israel's independence day is Yom HaZikaron, which is dedicated to the memory of fallen Israeli soldiers and Israeli civilian victims of terrorism.  
Born David Grün; 16 October 1886 – 1 December 1973) died at 87 was the primary national founder and first prime minister of the State of Israel. As head of the Jewish Agency from 1935, and later president of the Jewish Agency Executive, he was the de facto leader of the Jewish community in Palestine, and largely led the movement for an independent Jewish state in Mandatory Palestine.
Born in Płońsk, then part of Congress Poland, to Polish Jewish parents, he immigrated to the Palestine region of the Ottoman Empire in 1906. Adopting the name of Ben-Gurion in 1909, he rose to become the preeminent leader of the Jewish community in British-ruled Mandatory Palestine from 1935 until the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948,

The announcement of Israel's independence on May 14, 1948, was a culmination of decades of Zionist aspirations, the aftermath of the Holocaust, and the termination of the British Mandate for PalestineThe Declaration of Independence was proclaimed by the Jewish People's Council at the Tel Aviv Museum, marking the birth of the State of Israel. 

 This holiday was proclaimed by future Israeli prime minister David Ben-Gurion on behalf of the Yishuv on 14 May 1948. The mood outside of Ben-Gurion's residence just prior to the announcement was joyous:

The possibility of a Jewish homeland in Palestine had been a goal of Zionist organisations since the late 19th century. In 1917 British Foreign Secretary Arthur Balfour, above, stated in a letter (Balfour Doctrine)  to British Jewish community leader Walter, Lord Rothschild that:

His Majesty's government view with favour the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people, and will use their best endeavours to facilitate the achievement of this object, it being clearly understood that nothing shall be done which may prejudice the civil and religious rights of existing non-Jewish communities in Palestine, or the rights and political status enjoyed by Jews in any other country. “Our policy may fail; I do not deny that this is an adventure. Are we never to have adventures? Are we never to try new experiments?” Arthur Balfour said, in an address to the House of Lords, defending what has become known as the Balfour Declaration. At the time of that speech, his declaration was not quite five years old; today, it is exactly a hundred years old. (It was made public, in a letter to Lord Rothschild, on November 2, 1917.) “His Majesty’s government,” the Balfour Declaration read, “view with favour the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people, and will use their best endeavours to facilitate the achievement of this object, it being clearly understood that nothing shall be done which may prejudice the civil and religious rights of existing non-Jewish communities in Palestine, or the rights and political status enjoyed by Jews in any other country.” He accepted the view, Balfour continued before the Lords, “that some members of this race (Jews) may have given—doubtless did give—occasion for much ill will.” But this should be seen, he continued, in light of the “tyranny and persecution” to which they were subjected. Surely it was proper to send a message, to “every land where the Jewish race has been scattered,” that Christendom is not “unmindful of the service they have rendered to the great religions of the world.”  (Said when Balfour Doctrine was not quite 5 years old. ) No doubt he refers to something, as I think of all the anti-Semitism they have rendered to Jews, causing them to seek new homes in their neighbor's countries like Persia, Iraq, Syria, instead of places like Germany, Poland, etc...At the creation of Israel, they were thrown out of their newer homes of Iraq, Syria, etc.

  The expulsion of Jews from Iraq occurred primarily between 1950 and 1952, after the establishment of Israel in 1948. This large-scale exodus, known as Operation Ezra and Nehemiah, saw nearly the entire Iraqi Jewish population emigrate to Israel. This was a result of increasing persecution and government oppression following the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, which the Iraqi government then allowed in exchange for renunciation of Iraqi citizenship.  

                        Chaim Weizmann:   (born Nov. 27, 1874, Motol, Pol., Russian Empire [now in Belarus]—died Nov. 9, 1952, Reḥovot, Israel) was the first president of the new nation of Israel (1949–52), who was for decades the guiding spirit behind the World Zionist Organization.  Besides that, Chaim Weizmann's profession, as a chemist, created a method to produce acetone which was crucial for Britain's war effort during World War I. This acetone was a key component in making cordite (smokeless gunpowder). It helped Britain to win the war.

Are News Broadcasts Making Light of October 7th's Attack?

ABC's given reason this morning of Israel's attack on Gaza is the 1,400 Israelis murdered and butchered on October 7, 2023, but that's just the tip of the iceberg.  It's the LAST STRAW THAT FINALLY BROKE THE CAMEL'S BACK.  

"Chaos erupted at an all-night nature party near Kibbutz Re’im close to the Gaza Strip as the first rockets were fired by Hamas on Saturday morning. Eyewitnesses said the rockets were quickly followed by gunshots fired into the crowd even as hundreds of partygoers attempted to flee the site.  Hamas launched a major assault on Israel early Saturday with thousands of rockets fired and an unprecedented assault by gunmen on border communities, including the music festival. "

From the time they were finally accepted as a state, Israel has suffered from attacks, even before the blessed date of May 14, 1948.  The end of World War I showed that the Allies had a huge chance of winning the battle, and during this time, after praying and waiting for over 2,000 years, our Jewish leaders went to the leaders of the allies and pleaded their case to be given their Jewish Homeland back, being the Ottoman Empire, who had been holding it for the past 400 years, would lose it and it would be in their hands. They were the last Empire to hold it since the Jews lost Jerusalem to the Romans in 70 CE.   They won out after years, and it came to pass in 1948, after being whittled down to almost nothing;  but they took what speck of land they could get, for it was holy to them.                                                                     


Jews were attacked by Haj Amin al-Husseini, the Sherif of Jerusalem, known as the Grand Mufti, who didn't want any Jews coming into the land, though groups had been arriving from eastern Europe starting in about 1881, who had had enough of the pogroms against them because they were Jews.  Anti-Semitism rang clear through Europe since the Roman Emperor Constantine in the 300s had proclaimed his competition against Judaism was to not allow Jews anyplace in the lands.  


Then came Yasser Arafat (1929-2004) leader of the Palestine Liberation Organization PLO, born in Cairo, led attacks constantly against Jews in Israel, especially after 1967's war and the Arab's decision in Khartoum, Africa of no dealing with Israel, they'll take all the land in their famous NO NO NO decision. They have NEVER changed this decision in any dealing with Israel.  Instead, they adapted a world-wide program of terror activities aimed at Israeli, Zionist and Jewish targets.  Talks of a 2 state solution make decisions without expecting the Palestinians to accept peace and get this out of their charter.  They had incorporated Fatah, which later divided into Hamas as well, the real physical fighting terrorists.  Hamas has been shelling Israel every day since then hitting Sderot all the time.  Unfortunately, the Israelis have become acclimated into running into their shelters during these periods, and evidently so was the government, without shaking up the hornet's nest for the rest of the tiny country. They've also had their hands full of other rising terrorists against them, lately coming from Iran like Hezbollah in Lebanon.

So then the attack on October 7, 2023 Kibbutz Re'im that killed 1,400 of the population made up of visitors from around the world celebrating LIFE through a music festival.   This wasn't a shoot-out between the sheriff and the outlaws.  It was against dancing people enjoying music, and they were attacked by air (Para-gliders), sea (boats) land (foot, motorcycle) who came and committed the worst of primitive man's methods of killing;  shooting of course, knifing, beheading both to adults and children, invading their homes and slaughtering,  burning bodies, even stuffing small children into an oven and turning it on, things too horrible to imagine, playing with the decapitated heads and filming all their atrocities. These are things so horrifying that no one should sluff it off in their minds as another pogrom against Jews, and by the way, that my grandmother suffered from in Poland before immigrating to the States.  

As we have said during Passover (Dayenu), ENOUGH !  This is it.  I know from my searches in history's resources that Jews stand for Good and are against EVIL, and no one deserves to have arrived in the year of 2023 or by the Hebrew year's calendar of 5784, a time of going physically to the moon and beyond, a time of advanced technology mind-blowing only 100 years ago,  a time of near-perfection, to go through such agony.  Mankind is supposed to be at its most advanced state!  But not the Palestinians.  They have preferred to be at the most primitive state.   

It was a time of the Abraham Accords, and 4 Muslim countries had signed on with Israel.  This shook up these Palestinian  haters whose only reason to live is to destroy Israel.  They even ignore the rules of their own Islam to achieve their goal, stooping lower than animals ever would in order to do so. 

So don't think and have one picture in mind of the poor Palestinians turning on Jews-people you may not approve of-and getting even with an attack.  There's a lot more to the story.  And by the way-the poor Palestinians have been given every opportunity to have life as good as the Jews have had it-minus the rocket attacks, of course, and they haven't taken it.  They have preferred to attack.

Specialness of Judah: Why Judah Got the Southern End of Israel And Its Special People

Judah was the 4th son of Leah and Jacob.  That wasn't a special position to be in considering his father would have 12 sons.  In fact, we could consider him to have been a terrible brother!  It was he who persuaded his brothers to sell his 11th brother, Joseph to some passing Ishmaelites rather than leave him to die in a pit. Joseph had the distinction of being the 1st son of Rachel who died giving birth to her 2nd, Benjamin.  Most of these sons were the sons of Leah, Rachel's sister or two from her handmaid-thus Rachel's property. They all knew that it was Rachel who had been their father's favorite wife.  They felt that Joseph had taken advantage of this position.    Whose idea was it to get rid of Joseph in the first place?  They were all jealous of him, knowing Joseph was the favorite of their father.  

Part of the hatred was actually Joseph's own fault.  Firstly, he used to report back to their father that they were not caring properly for his flocks. Secondly, he angered them by sharing one of his dreams, in which the whole family symbolically bowed down to him. And finally, his father Jacob had given him a many-coloured coat as a sign of his favour. Angry and jealous, they hated him so much that they could no longer bear to speak to him. But then he was only 17 when they sold him to the Ishmaelites for 20 pieces of silver.  

"The brothers felt that Joseph was a threat not so much to them as to the family's destiny.  they knew that the weeding out process that banished Ishmael and Esau from the choseness of Israel was to be over in their generation, so that the mission of the Patriarchs could go forward with them.  But if Joseph were to bring dissension into the family, he would destroy this potential with untold consequences.  If so, then he had to be judged as a traitor and a danger to them all," so said the teachings of the Sages about this history.  

Things got so bad that the brothers decided to do away with him. One day when Joseph went to the fields to check up on them and found them in Dothan, , they threw him into a pit and discussed how best to kill him. During this discussion, one of the brothers – Judah – came up with a different plan. He proposed that they get rid of him by selling him to a group of passing merchants instead.

They succeeded.  Meanwhile, these passing Ishmaelites, who were Medanites, had sold him in Egypt to Potiphar, a courtier of Pharaoh, the Chamberlain of the Butchers.  

Despite the seniority of Reuben, Simeon, and Levi, he received Jacob's patriarchal blessing when he was dying, telling each son this future.  (Gen. 49-8). Jacob said to Judah,"You, your brothers shall acknowledge;  Your hand will be at your enemies' nape;  your father's son will prostrate themselves to you.  A lion cub is Judah;  from the prey, my son, you elevated yourself.  He crouches, lies down like a lion, and like an awesome lion, who dares rouse him?  The scepter shall not depart from Judah now a scholar from among his descendants until Shiloh arrives, and his will be an assemblage of nations.  He will tie his donkey to the vine;  to the vine branch his donkey's foal;  he will launder his garments in wine and his robe in blood of grapes.  Red eyed from wine, and white toothed from milk."   

Until Shiloh arrives is prophetic, all right.  That was the 1st cult center of the Israelite religion after the conquest of Canaan under Joshua.  It was situated 25 miles North of Jerusalem in the Mts. of Ephraim.  The Ark and Tabernacle were kept there during the period of the Judges, serving as the central national shrine and object of pilgrimage, especially during the long priesthood of Eli.  When this arrived, it was the end of Judah's control as the center was Jerusalem, in Judah. Today Shiloh is in Judah but it's also the West Bank.

 Shiloh has been positively identified with modern Khirbet Seilun, a tell known in Modern Hebrew as Tel Shiloh. It is located 31 kilometres (19 mi) north of Jerusalem, in the West Bank, to the west of the modern Israeli settlement town of Shilo and to the north of the Palestinian town of Turmus Ayya. 

The area received by the tribe of Judah was one of the largest in Canaan and it eventually absorbed also the inheritance of Simeon in the Negev.  David belonged to this tribe and his accession signaled its assuming a leading position over other tribes.  

Incidentally, the Negev of Simeon is "dry-land" of Israel extending over an expanse of 5,138 sq miles; 60% of the total area of the country.  Annual rainfall here is less than 200 mm. Simeon was told that his family would be dispersed and they were.  They came to live in Arab land of Seir, a mountainous country of Edom-the descendants of Esau, who replaced the Horites,   and some settled in the Mountains of Ephraim. It's cooler in mountains.  I lived in Safed, on top of a mountain in upper Galilee.  We also had a cooling breeze. 

In 597-586 BCE, Zedekiah was the last king of Judah.  In 586 BCE, the Babylonians had attacked  and large numbers of the Jews were being deported.  The people tried to create a subject state under Gedaliah, a member of the former royal house but ended with his assassination in 582. Those deported exiles continued to cherish their national and religious ideals which made it possible to renew their Jewish life after 539 BCE in the area of the former kingdom of Judah.   

The Romans burned down Jerusalem and the 2nd Temple in 70 CE, almost bringing the end to Judaism.

The modern legal attempts to establish a national homeland for the Jewish people began in 1839 with a petition by Moses Montefiore to Sa'id (1784-1885) of Egypt for a Jewish homeland in the region of Palestine. He was an English philanthropist who had amassed a comfortable fortune as a broker, from collaborating with Rothchild and retired from business when 40 years old.  He was the 1st English Jew to be knighted.  He went to Palestine with A. Cremieux(1796-1880) a French Jew in 1840 as he was concerned about the "Damascus Affair".  He visited Palestine 7 times with the last visit when he was 90 years old! Cremieux's children converted to Christianity, causing him to end his presidency of the Central consistory of French Jews in 1843.  While he was in Egypt with Montefiore, he founded Jewish schools that he personally supported.   

Those people who fled from the burning of Jerusalem and saw the destruction of Judah are called Jews today instead of Israelites.  Jews have returned to their homeland of Israel as it is today.  "The European powers mandated the creation of a Jewish homeland at the San Remo conference of 19–26 April 1920. In 1948, the State of Israel was established."  Groups of Jews started returning in 1880 from Europe who were suffering from Pogroms against them.  A group returning was called an Aliyah.  There were about 5 aliyote that continued, populating the Ottoman Empire in familiar established sites.  

Another  movement to return started in  " 1896, Theodor Herzl set out his vision of a Jewish state and homeland for the Jewish


people in his book Der Judenstaat. He then proceeded to found the World Zionist Organization.  The thing was that the situation for Jews was realized by Jews to be so terrible, that they needed the refuge of their own homeland.  They had really been homeless, a wandering people, for almost 2,000 years.  Yet they still existed, but on a 2nd class level-always.  A 3rd class if truth be told, because they refused to become Christians and meld into the populations.  Many Jews had lost the incentive to follow their religion exactly but they all had one thing in common;  there was but one G-d; and some even questioned the one.  Science was the field many naturally fell into and with that background, they questioned much.  Even Theodor Herzl was not an Orthodox Jew, but he was people-minded;  nationalistic towards his people.  

Theodor Herzl's real name was Benjamin Ze'ev Herzl (1860-1904) and was born in Budapest, Hungary.  He became founder of Political Zionism.  In 1891 he was Paris correspondent for the Vienna Neue Freie Presse, and of course, being Jewish, was most interested in the "Jewish Problem " that others had with us.  He was an activist, so his first thought was to present assimilation as a solution (G-d forbid)!  That very same year was when Alfred Dreyfuss (1859-1935) was in the news, a Jew who was a captain and lieutenant in the French army and was being black-listed because of him being Jewish!  This seemed to shake up all Jews now, including Herzl.  

Herzl came to the conclusion that Jews were a people whose assimilation was impracticable and whose plight would deteriorate owing to its social and economic position;  the solution was the founding of a Jewish state by international agreement.  The territory must be chosen by the Jews but he personally favored Palestine.  Although he at first was opposed by both assimilationists and ultra-Orthodox, his book rallied the Hibbat Zion Movement and its youth.   

He returned to Vienna as literary editor of his paper.  He gained the sympathy, though a temporary one, of the German kaiser William II whom he met at Constantinople and again in Palestine in 1898.  By 1903 he received Britain's approval of Jewish settlement in Uganda, Africa suggested by Joseph Chamberlain.  That was followed by a storm of protests.  He talked with the Pope, the king of Italy, and he had to accept the fact that only Palestine would do.  His heart gave out and he died in Austria.  His novel, Altneuland, presents his Zionist ideas as embodied in a utopian Jewish state in Palestine.  

The Jewish National Home as decided on April 24, 1920 included Judea and Samaria.   Britain was granted a Mandate for Palestine on 25 April 1920 at the San Remo Conference, and, on 24 July 1922, this mandate was approved by ..the League of Nations. 

It was decided by people who had no idea of Israel or Judah or their history-both the non-Jews and even probably the Jews themselves, as who was really nationalistic?  Against this troubling backdrop, the government of Prime Minister David Lloyd George—elected in December 1916—made the decision to publicly support Zionism, a movement led in Britain by Chaim Weizmann, (1874-1952) a Russian Jew who had settled in Manchester, England.  Chaim was a Jewish chemist; a scientist. He was involved in Herzl's movement.   Viscount Herbert Samuel (1870-1963) was also on board, a Jew in the British Parliament.  He influenced the Balfour Declaration to be written.  

 Before the British occupation, Palestine was part of Ottoman Syria. The British army ruled Palestine until a civil administration was established on 1 July 1920.

We are Jews, the last remnant of the people of Judah, a direct line  from Judah the 4th son of Jacob back to Abraham. As of 2023, the world's "core" Jewish population (those identifying as Jews above all else) was estimated at 16 million, 0.2% of the 8 billion worldwide population.

If you're wondering how large we had once been, 2 Samuel 6:1 describes “all the chosen men of Israel” as 30,000 in the time of David. 2 Samuel 24:9 gives the figures for David's census as 800,000 soldiers for Israel, and 500,000 for Judah. But Chronicles records that the same census found 1,100,000 for Israel and 470,000 for Judah.  The Torah records the Exodus with Judah leaving Egypt with 

74,600  and arriving with 76,500 40 years later.

The first King of Saudi Arabia, Ibn Saud and Coincidences That Followed

Suddenly, the world, or at least the USA, was going crazy over this song and the idea of Arab lovers in 1921. This coincided-actually followed   the 1920 meetings going on about the end of WWI and the decisions of what to do with the land in the Middle East that had belonged to the Ottoman Empire which was now the property of the Allies.  The League of Nations had just decided, through the Balfour Doctrine, that Palestine would be held for 30 years by Britain, who would help the Jews create the Jewish Homeland once again, for it had been their land way back in the days of the Old Testament of Kinga Saul, David, Solomon, etc, going back over 3,000 years ago. 

There was no knowledge at this time of any oil laying in Arabia.  All they had to offer the world was a lot of sand.   
                                                  

Coincidently, King Tut of Egypt's tomb was then discovered on November 4, 1922.  Everything Egyptian was suddenly most popular.  People were emulating everything Egyptian, clothing styles, jewelry, etc. It just happened to be a Brit who made the discovery.  "British archaeologist Howard Carter and his workmen discover a step leading to the tomb of King Tutankhamen in the Valley of the Kings in Egypt on November 4, 1922." 

King Ibn Saud as the West knew him, better known to Saudis as Abdulaziz bin Abdul Rahman Al Saud, was born on 15 January 1875 and died on  – 9 November 1953), and was an Arab tribal, political, and religious leader who founded Saudi Arabia, the third Saudi state. He reigned as the first king of Saudi Arabia from 23 September 1932 to his death in 1953. He had ruled parts of the kingdom since 1902, having previously been EmirSultan, and King of Nejd, and King of Hejaz.

Ibn Saud was the son of Abdul Rahman bin Faisal, Emir of Nejd, and Sara bint Ahmed Al Sudairi. The family were exiled from their residence in the city of Riyadh in 1890

Ibn Saud reconquered Riyadh in 1902, starting three decades of conquests that made him the ruler of nearly all of central and north Arabia. He consolidated his control over the Nejd in 1922,signing a new treaty with Great Britain,  then conquered the Hejaz in 1925. He extended his dominions into what later became the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 1932.

 As King, he presided over the discovery of petroleum in Saudi Arabia in 1938 and the beginning of large-scale oil production after World War II.

 He fathered many children, including 45 sons, and all of the subsequent kings of Saudi Arabia. Out of this line, we meet Abdullah, who had no land, met Churchill and secured 79% of the already deemed land to be the Jewish Homeland, Judea and Samaria.  He was the ancestor of the present king of Jordan, Abdullah II.  It is said that their line goes back to Mohammad.  They are the Hashemites.  " He is a member of the Hashemite dynasty, the royal family of Jordan since 1921, and is considered a 41st-generation direct descendant of Prophet Muhammad."

Emirate of Transjordan, British protectorate (1921–1946) Hashemite Kingdom of Transjordan, a former name (1946–1949) for the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.    Here's what happened to the Jewish Homeland.  Notice that the piece left for the Jews, the purple area, has been given to the Palestinian Arabs now, called the West Bank, which is really the western part of Judea and Samaria with the Jordan River as the divider.

interestingly, Jews did live in Arabia, with a great many by the 6th and 7th centuries.  In fact, they were converting to Judaism.  Mohammad (570-632) came across many Jews and incorporated some Judaism into Islam.  It is said that Mohammad even had a Jewish wife.  Rayhāna bint Zayd (Arabic: ريحانة بنت زيد) was a Jewish woman from the Banu Nadir tribe, who is considered by some Muslims as being one of Muhammad's wives. Certainly people know of stories in the Koran about the Jews that were not flattering, as they were told of finding Jews behind rocks and killing them. So by 1920, the land was pretty much devoid of any Jews.  

In truth, being Abdullah I came to his new land of Transjordan with a very small population from Arabia to rule someone, has really become a Palestinian refuge of Arabs; thus here is your Palestine.  Abdullah II has even married a Palestinian woman. The State is made up mostly of Palestinians.
