The Era of Crusades-A Coalition To Take Jerusalem From Moslems

Nadene Goldfoot
First Crusade remembered in art
1096-1099 Led by Peter the Hermit , a French Priest

launched by Pope Urban II  with the French King St. Louis
The Crusades era started as a movement of European kings to take over Jerusalem from the Moslems, and ended with Europe attempting to put an end to Judaism.  The First Crusade took place from 1096 to 1099 by the King of France, St. Louis, and attacks against Jews living in Northern France were made first before they ever got to Jerusalem to make battle with the Muslims, telling me that the fight was also against the Jews for not converting to Christianity.  When they got to Jerusalem they couldn't tell the difference between the Moslems and the Jews, so they killed both when they could.  One family story I have is of a Rabbi's home being invaded by a mounted Crusader who slaughtered his wife and daughters in front of him but left the rabbi.

Beginning in the 11th century, Christians in Jerusalem were increasingly persecuted by the city’s Islamic rulers, especially when control of the holy city passed from the relatively tolerant Egyptians to the Seljuk Turks in 1071. Late in the century, Byzantine Emperor Alexius Comenus, also threatened by the Seljuk Turks, appealed to the West for aid. In 1095, Pope Urban II publicly called for a crusade to aid Eastern Christians and recover the holy lands. The response by Western Europeans was immediate."

At the time, Jerusalem was in the hands of the Turks.  The Christian world was new, being run by the Byzantine Emperor, Alexius I, who called for help in fighting  the Turks who were Moslims.  So the COUNCIL OF PLACENZA sent ambassadors for the Byzantine Emperor to fight.

Jews lived in the Rhineland nearby as well, and they also became victims to the Crusaders.  The cities with Jewish populations were Mainz, Worms, Speyer, Cologne, etc.

Jews had settled in Worms by the 1000s, probably arriving a bit earlier. " Worms (German: [vɔʁms]) is a city in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, situated on the Upper Rhine about 60 kilometres (40 miles) south-southwest of Frankfurt-am-Main".Emperor Henry IV had used them for his financial assistance, and so rewarded them with substantial privileges for Jews in 1074 and again in 1090, granting them freedom of commerce-rare for Jews.  They were also granted security of property and imperial protection.  These were all not the rule for Jews, but granted privileges for doing work for the Emperor.   Jews then were less than 2nd class citizens.    The community was annihilated in the FIRST CRUSADE.  Because of its importance to the Jews who had lived and worked there, Jews did return shortly afterwards.  They were destroyed again in the BLACK DEATH OUTBREAKS of 1349.

My cousin mentioned studying about Worms in a history class being a very important city of the Middle Ages. He was right.   "Worms has been a Roman Catholic bishopric since at least 614, and was an important palatinate of Charlemagne. Worms Cathedral is one of the Imperial Cathedrals and among the finest examples of Romanesque architecture in Germany. Worms prospered in the High Middle Ages as an Imperial Free City. Among more than a hundred Imperial Diets held at Worms, the Diet of 1521 (commonly known as the Diet of Worms) ended with the Edict of Worms in which Martin Luther was declared a heretic. (Here, a diet is a national legislature.)  In other words, the government met here.  Jews chose to live there because of being a free city.

RASHI 1040-1105, our famous biblical commentator whose comments are still read to this day in our Jewish prayer books, was born in 1040 in Troyes, France.  He studied in the Rhineland, where all the important Jewish Biblical studying went on.

Mainz was the main center for the diffusion of rabbinic learning.  Jews had probably lived there during the Roman period but evidence dates back to the 900s.  This community was the principal Jewish community of northern Europe.  In 1012 Jews were expelled from Mainz but soon returned.   Protection also came to Mainz Jews from the Arch-bishop on the advent of the Crusaders but in 1096 hundreds were murdered.

In 1209, 113 years later, the emperor conceded to the archbishop his rights over the Jews.  When the Black Death struck, there was a further series of massacres against the Jews as well.!

Speyer/Spire  was a Rhenish town.  The 1st Jewish community here was from 1070.  Jews were free to practice commerce under the protection of Bishop Rodiger who regarded them as valuable subjects and had invited them to settle there coming from Mainz/Mayence.  A Jewish judge was allowed to exercise jurisdiction, and the Jews defended their quarter in times of siege.  In 1096 the bishop of Spire protected the Jews from the crusaders!  Some were killed anyway.   This town had also been the center of Jewish scholarship and was associated with Worms and Mainz/ Mayaence in rabbinical synods.

Rioters in Germany of Today,
could easily be in 1096

Cologne, Germany  had a Jewish community that was known about way back during the Roman era.  In 321, Constantine canceled the Jewish exemption from the membership in the city council which was responsible for taxation.  At that time the community was already well-organized.  By the era of Crusaders, Jews lived there under the protection of the archbishop and had their own quarter and synagogue.  By 1096, they were decimated by rioters who plundered their property and desecrated the synagogue.  The community was refounded later.  Some of the people lived in a special quarter of the city, and an adjacent gate called the Jews' Gate was entrusted to their supervision in 1106.  This sounds like a ghetto to me where Jews were locked in.  By 1331 Jews received a charter of rights.  Being granted broad juridical autonomy, they were obligated to pay heavy taxes, more than other Germans. What they were granted were automatic rights for the Christian Germans. 1096 was the year of German Crusade massacres to Jews in European towns.  By 1099 in Jerusalem, the Jewish community was also massacred by the Crusaders.  It was the start of many future expellings of Jews from their countries as well.

Until the end of the 13th century, Jews engaged in trade and participated in the local fairs but, later, their work activity was limited to money lending only.  During the BLACK DEATH (Plague) , the town council tried to protect the Jews from mob violence against them that amounted to massacres of 1349, but the mobs grew out of hand and the entire community was destroyed.  Because Jews may have suffered less, keeping kosher the laws of cleanliness practiced before PASSOVER, they were blamed for the outbreak.  "The so-called Black Death, or pandemic of the Middle Ages, began in China and made its way to Europe, causing the death of 60% of the entire population."

Some Jews returned in 1372.  They were later expelled in 1394 and their synagogue was turned into a church.  A new community sprung up in nearly Deutz.  Settlement in Cologne was only resumed much much later in 1798 and there were 14,816 Jews living in Cologne by 1933, the cusp of WWII.  The Nazis destroyed them all.  By 1990 there were 1,300 Jews living in this city.

These cities in Germany were the origins of our Ashkenazi ancestors.  "After the Crusades of which there were 5 movements,
1st Crusade:  1096-1099, won Jerusalem, then lost it.
2nd Crusade:  1147-1149  failed attempt
3rd Crusade:   1189-1192
4th-9th  Crusades:   1320  mercenaries.

"In consequence of this resolve there assembled an immense number of warlike pilgrims from Germany, France, Spain, Britain, and Italy, composing a mass of all sorts of men, who all hastened to the East in a pious and holy rage,--others, indeed, for the mere love of plunder,--to take part in the holy war; wherein, therefore, it was quite natural that the pious and holy priests should play a principal part. This, however, was a terrible and tragical period for all the Jews residing in the above-named countries; since these pious pilgrims had, at present, the best opportunity to give full vent to their hatred and fury against our poor and helpless people, and to enrich themselves at the same time with their wealth and possessions."

"Especially in Germany an innumerable host of Jews, entire congregations, both little and great, both old and young, were butchered in cold blood, and their earthly possessions confiscated by the saints. Only those who would consent to join Christianity, the only saving church, could remain unmolested; but few, indeed, availed themselves of this dishonourable means of saving their lives! These are the persecutions of 4856 (1096), called among us גזרות תתנ״ו; but it is not my province to speak of them more circumstantially. A complete account of these dreadful events is found in the book of Chronicles of Rabbi Joseph, the priest, a native of Italy, known as דברי הימים לר׳ יוסף הכהן."

Godfrey of Lorraine, France
He became king of Jerusalem.  On July 15, 1099
Crussaders had slaughter Moslimes, Jews and even Christians
that they came to liberate in their zeal to kill.

"The number of these warlike pilgrims was about 600,000 men; they took their journey by seven different routes (Deut. 28:25). They were led by Godfrey of Lorraine, and many distinguished princes. They pursued their difficult and dangerous route through Constantinople, Anatolia, Antiochia, Trablus, Beirut, Zidon, Zur, and Akko. Their near approach produced a panic and frightful terror among the inhabitants of Jerusalem. The Egyptian Calif, who had but recently only taken it from the Tartars, commanded to place the city in a state of defence, to strengthen the wall of the city, and to supply it with brave troops, and with everything requisite, with arms no less than with an ample store of provisions." from Descriptive Geography and Brief Historical Sketch of Palestine by Rabbi Joseph Schwarz, 1850, History of Palestine: 1096-1520 CE, from the Reign of the Europeans to Suian Seliman
.
Ashkenazi Jews tended to migrate to eastern European countries assimilating those whom they found there and thence passing at a later period to  western Europe and then to the Americas.  Their Hebrew pronounciation differs from that of the Sephardim, and, in some things, their ritual is distinctive, being closer to the ancient Palestinian tradition.  That's because so many went from Jerusalem to Rome as slaves, carrying with them the rituals.

Until the 20th century, the overwhelming majority of Ashkenazi Jews spoke Yiddish, a combination of Hebrew and German, Loez which is a combination of Old French and Old italian, and Slavic.  My great aunt and uncle Alice and Max Turn/ Turshinsky could tell where a Jew came from by his Yiddish.  Equal or perhaps inferior in number to the Sephardim in the Middle Ages, they constituted before 1933 some 9/10 of the Jewish people which was about 15,000,000 out of 16,500,000.  Owing to the massacres of 1939 to 1945 when we lost 6 million, the proportion was lowered to 9,500,000 out of 111,500,000. France's Anti-Semitism Coming From Crusades of 1099

Nadene Goldfoot

In 300s was an important meeting in Constantinople held by the former Roman Empire leaders now being interested in the new religion they were turning to, Christianity.  They discussed replacing the Jews with their own religion and power. The 1st council  convened in Constantinople in AD 381 by the Roman Emperor Theodosius I (347-395).This second ecumenical council, an effort to attain consensus in the church through an assembly representing all of Christendom, except for the Western Church, confirmed the Nicene Creed, expanding the doctrine thereof to produce the Niceno-Constantinopolitan Creed, and dealt with sundry other matters. It met from May to July 381 in the Church of Hagia Irene and was affirmed as ecumenical in 451 at the Council of Chalcedon.

Clovis (Latin: Chlodovechus; reconstructed Frankish: *Hlōdowig; 466 -November 511) was the first king of the Franks to unite all of the Frankish tribes under one ruler, changing the form of leadership from a group of royal chieftains to rule by a single king and ensuring that the kingship was passed down to his heirs.  The Franks became known as the French.  Catholicism became the state religion of France at Clovis's conversion.  This caused France to be called THE ELDEST DAUGHTER OF THE CHURCH.

In 1040 CE Our wonderful  RASHI, Jewish biblical commentator, was born in Troyes, France but had a school in the Rhineland. Through DNA, my family is  related to him.  He was a direct descendant of King David of Israel.

In 1099 the Jewish community in Jerusalem was massacred by the Crusaders there.

In 1160, Notre Dame was started to be built in Paris.  It was a medieval Catholic Cathedral.

Louis IX, commonly known as Saint Louis, was King of France, the ninth from the House of Capet, and is a canonized Catholic and Anglican saint.

The king of France, Louis IX (1226 -1270) son of Louis VIII of France, grandson of Philip Augustus and king of France, was a king of the Middle Ages, a knight, religious, ascetic and hostile to the Jews.  He opposed the only work open to Jews as everything else had been barred to them, and that was the lending of money.  So he decreed laws against the Jews and finally ordered their expulsion as well. You might know of him today as St. Louis, and is who our American city is named for.  He was very anxious to convert the Jews and encouraged talks between the synagogue and the Church for this reason.  They of course turned into theological disputes where it was hoped that there would be Jews ready to convert or at least shamed by their belief.  What it resulted seemed to be  convincing unresolved Christians of the truth of Christianity and the baseness of Judaism.

By 1236 several French provinces;  Anjou, Poitou, Mancois, Touraine, Berry, persecuted the Jews living there.  The attackers were crusaders.  King Louis took no action to stop them.  He could have even instigated the attack with his attitude and comments.

In  1239, Pope Gregory IX asked the kings of France and Portugal to order the seizure of Jewish books for examination.  In those days it was a rare person that could read, period.  How could they do that?  Could they read Hebrew?  King Louis was the quickest and most zealous to obey.  24 loads of Jewish books were burned in 1242 and you can bet that none were read by any non-Jew.  Some people of Christian belief still carry this feeling of stigma against our Talmud, not understanding at all what it says or why it is of utmost importance, regardless of your choice of religious persuasion. A pre-conceived hostile attitude continues to carry on.  This is true documentation of what was said about our own Torah and all the Tanakh by all the commentators in all the schools of biblical learning.  What they did then to our holy material is what today's historians are just catching onto and keeping digitally.

A Talmud covers so much it comes in a set from the publishers

This putting our Talmud on trial is called THE TALMUD'S BURNING, PARIS DISPUTE, or TALMUD CONTROVERSY.  In Hebrew it's called Vikouah Pariz and is a major event in the history of the Jews and their relationship to Christianity.  We remember the 24 cartloads of manuscripts of the Talmud that  were burned in the fire at Notre-Dame, an event that all but destroyed Torah study in France and which is immortalized in the Kinot for Tisha B'Av.  So much distrust, hatred and misunderstanding by a people not even curious enough to study them to find out what they wanted to burn.
Debate between Rabbi Yehiel of Paris with Friar Nicholas Dunin
and Rabbi Shmuel of Falaise and Maharam Rottenberg
There was no way the Jews would be allowed to win against the Christians.  The debate was held at the instigation of Nicolas Donin, an apostate Jew converted to Christianity.  He and his clerics debated 4 rabbis, led by Rabbi Yehiel of Paris in the presence of King Louis IX of France.

Book burning, something Nazis also did.

Today, you won't find even many rabbis who know about it being the way history is going about the whole world, the same is happening to Jews and our Jewish history.  I ask, "Is this why King St. Louis is called a saint?"   What makes a man a saint when his deeds have been so dastardly to others of a different religion?  Is it okay to treat one type of people like cursed dogs and praise your own?  According to their own story, Jesus was a Jew, yet they hated Jews so very much.  A man should not commit suicide as he is made in G-ds image, we Jews say.  Knowing this, is it a holy act enough to be a saint that by taking one's like he is also taking his own people's lives for all time?  For this is what has happened to the Jewish people  Since he died, Jews have been hunted and cursed and it hasn't let up in France by any means.

1240 saw a trial held against Judaism's TALMUD in Paris in the unfinished Notre Dame Cathedral.  They actually tried our most respected of literature and comments on our laws from  G-d through Moses for blasphemy against their new church!  Two of the rabbis defending the Talmud were Rabbi Shmuel of Falaise and the Maharam Rottenberg, who debated their best and are well known to us today through the prayers they composed and the elegies about the burning of the holy books which are still part of our liturgy on the 9th of Av's fast.  That's our bad luck day.  It was the day both our 1st and 2nd Temples were destroyed.

To the French it didn't matter that Judaism came WAY BEFORE Christianity.   Moses was born in 1391 BCE and died in 1771 BCE at 120 years and that Jesus died in 37 CE about 1200 years ago at the time of the trial while Moses died 3011 years ago.  As for the Talmud which are comments on the Five Books of Moses, records of discussions about them by rabbis who studied them all their life,  there are 2 of them; one written in Palestine and the other written in Babylonia by the religious men taken there by Nebuchadnezzar in a kidnapping-assaulting.  They were completed  in about 200-400 CE. The Babylonian seems to be the most popular of the two.

The trial ended with the decree ordering all copies of the Talmud to be seized which amounted to tens of wagonloads, at least 10,000 handwritten volumes of holy texts.  Then they were all burned on nearby Place de Greve in 1242.  The printing press was yet to be invented.  St. Louis thought that Christians had a chief and that it was the Bishop.  He realized that the Jews had no one, so he decided to be the bishop of the Jews and he would punish them when they behaved badly.  He then decided he would also protect them when they were unjustly attacked.  I wonder what that would take.

King St. Louis was the instigator of the last crusades and massacre of Jews in the Holy Land.

By 1260 Notre Dame was finished.  Its name in English is Our Lady of Paris, named for the Virgin Mary.  There are two statues at the main entrance of the Paris Cathedral, known as Ecclesia and Sinagoga.  Most tourists look at them, gasp a little and then continue inside the cathedral.  These statues stand for the Christian theological doctrine of Verus Israel.  It's today's Christian replacement theory, adopted by the Presbyterians and possibly also by the Methodists.  The statues are showing the triumph of the Church over the disgraced Jewish people.

The Catholic theory now 759 years old was that they thought the Jews were fallen people and had been replaced by THE NEW ISRAEL.  The New ISRAEL IN THEIR MINDS WERE THE CATHOLICS.  On these statues the CATHOLICS were represented by a woman who stands with her head crowned facing the other woman represented who has her head bowed, blindfolded by a snake and holding in her hands the 2 tablets of laws-Moses's 10 Commandments-IN THEIR MINDS-THE JEWISH PEOPLE'S TORAH.  So now, Catholics, you have been replaced by the Presbyterians.  All this Jewish Goldfoot lady can say is to heed the Golden rule:  DON'T DO TO OTHERS WHAT YOU WOULD NOT WANT DONE TO YOU.  You[re getting your just desserts.

By 1306 Jews who lived in France were expulsed because they were not Christians.  They were hated for being Jewish.

It took the French a little more than 100 years by 1420, to annihilate the Jews in Toulouse, France.

While undergoing renovation and restoration, the roof of Notre-Dame caught on fire on the evening of 15 April 2019. The picture above is just before the fire.  Burning for around 15 hours, the cathedral sustained serious damage, including the destruction of the spire and most of the lead-covered wooden roof above the stone vaulted ceiling."  Every TV station caught the pictures of it burning and the world held their breath.  Notre Dame is already promised to be reborn in 5 years.  You won't know it had ever been threatened.

That the very same moment that Notre Dame was on fire, the Al-Aqsa mosque on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem was also on fire.

A dissertation, Verus Israel,  was written by a Professor at the University of Strasbourg, France, Marcel Simon (1907-1986), a Jewish Frenchman. I figure he was Jewish as Simon is certainly a Jewish surname.   It's the classic study that examines Jewish-Christian relations in the Roman Empire from the 2nd Jewish War led by Aluf Bar Kokhba from 132 to 135 CE to the end of the Jewish Patriarchate in 425 CE.  It was published in French first in 1948.  The book is said to overturn the then commonly held view that the Jewish and Christian communities gradually stopped interacting and that the Jews gave up proselytizing among the gentiles.  Simon takes a contrary position and says that Judaism continued to make the influence felt on the world at large and to be influenced by it in turn.  He analyses both the antagonisms and the attractions between the 2 faiths and he concludes with a discussion of the final disappearance of Judaism as a missionary religion.  The rival community triumphed with the help of a Christian imperial authority and a doctrine well adapted to the Graeco-Roman mentality.

He also wrote in 1967, Jewish sects at the time of Jesus.  Yes the Romans had been in power as they had occupied Israel for over 100 years before they burnt it all down in 70 CE.  In fact, it was they who put up thousands of crosses and nailed thousands of Jews to them for any slight infraction of the THEIR LAW.

Remember Kristallnacht on November 9th and 10th in 1938?  Jews had 1,000 synagogues that were destroyed in flames by the Nazi Germany, the beginning of the annihilation of the Jews of Europe.

A Jewish family from Paris makes Aliyah
French Jews in Israel are immigrants and descendants of the immigrants of the French Jewish communities, who now reside within the state of Israel. They number over 200,000 as of 2012.
In 2015 was figured that 10,000 Jews from France would make aliyah.

World War II's Jews of the Balkan States: Bulgaria, Greece, Turkey and Yugoslavia-Croatia and United Nations

Nadene Goldfoot
Haj Amin al Husseini
Muslim Sherif of Jerusalem-appointed by a British Jew
When Britain Held the 30 year Mandate Rule over Palestine, ending in 1948.
He wanted all Jews out of Palestine.

Usually most Jews of the USA's Ashkenazi ancestors came from the Pale of Settlement, that area that Catherine II of Russia controlled.  She kept Jews in the Pale, transferring Jews from Russia to live there as her country was supposed to be free of Jews.

The UN had refugee centers for non Jews in the Balkans during WWII, which contrasts the refugee centers for today's Muslims escaping wars from Muslim terrorists such as ISIS and al Qaeda against other Muslims of different Islamic  persuasions.  All this has been causing countries to step in such as Russia and Iran, the USA and a world coalition.  So far, Iraq has fallen and Syria is holding on by a thread with everyone's intervention against his horrific hold on his people.

Now nice the UN was and acted to help refugees.  How Jews were rounded up to meet their deaths was beyond belief, instead.

Bulgaria also had a history of Jews living there since the days of the Romans when they destroyed Jerusalem and their Temple in 70 CE.  By the Middle Ages, they were Christianized, probably the advent of the SPANISH INQUISITION when Jews were forced to  submit to Christianity or leave or be killed.  They continued to show a marked influence of Judaism in their new Christian practices.

Many Jews fleeing from central Europe with their anti-Semitic acts of slaughter found refuge in Bulgaria in that Middle Age period.  This was the center of Byzantium and their Empire.

The queen of Ivan Alexander, Czar of Bulgaria from 1331 to 1355 was the former Jewish lady, THEODORA.  She was the Queen of Constantinople.
It's a repeat of Queen Esther's experience, being a Jewish queen.

After Spain's 1492 expulsion of Jews from their country unless they converted to Christianity, Jews moved to Bulgaria and established new Sephardic communities.  Most had moved from Salonica.  Communities from  Sofia, Nicopolis and Pievna became the most important centers. For centuries, the Jews were typical Turkish communities.

Tradition Bulgarian costume

In 1878, the CONGRESS OF BERLIN created a stand of religious equality as a condition.  This was generally observed, not withstanding the persistence of some prejudices, in Bulgaria.  Even during WWII when they were allied with Nazi Germany, the Bulgarian government refused to carry out the German anti-Semitic policies except in what they considered to be minor matters, and the Bulgarian community was the only one in occupied Europe besides Finland, which escaped mass-deportations of Jews to gas chambers and death.

Joachim Von Ribbentrop, Nazi

Also, it should be noted, that the Zionist movement was strong in this country.
During WWII, some Bulgarian Jews reached safety in 1940. The Nazi "Final Solution" slaughtered Jews.  Jews were deported from Macedonia and Thrace in 1943.  The King of Bulgaria intervened to protect Jews  in 1943.  Negotiations  had begun with the governments of Bulgaria, Hungary and Denmark at the time when the Jews of Poland were boxed in, with the object of starting the evacuation of Jews of these countries by the Nazi, Ribbentrop.  It was in Poland and western Russia that Jews were trapped and had no way to escape.  So were the Jews of Germany, Austria and Czechoslovakia by Nazi rule.  The Jews of Denmark, Italy, Bulgaria and Hungary were untouched up to that date.

After 1948, almost the entire community of Jews transferred itself, with the approval of Bulgaria's government, to Israel.  The Jewish population in 1990 was 5,000 remaining Jews out of a former 48,000.

The plot to get rid of Jews in WWII with Nazis.

Then why, if things were so good for Jews, were "Bulgarians" part of the WWII refugee program rescued by Middle Eastern countries of Syria, , Egypt, Palestine, numbered in the 10s of thousands reported by the Middle East Relief and Refugees Administration (MERRA)?  Were Jews among these refugees?  Were any taken into Palestine?

At the time, it was a Palestinian by the name of Haj Amin al Husseini, the so called Sherif of Jerusalem AKA the Grand Mufti, who made a special trip to Germany to converse with HITLER about us accursed Jews.  He wanted us out of Palestine, and we had always been there.  After 70 CE, things had changed and many were taken by the Romans into Rome, etc, while others had sought refuge in Spain, fleeing such horrible lives of slavery, or being used in coliseums in animal shows where people were eaten, etc. However, Jews had been able to remain.  Jews had always lived there; Mizrachi Jews.   We had Jews returning from the Russian areas by 1880 and moving into Palestine to join those whose ancestors had stayed.  Islam has been an aggressive culture since Mohammad had died in 632, and so many admired Hitler, also an aggressive conqueror.  This is seen in their interest in Nazi literature since then, and their refusal to make peace with Jews of Israel.

Blue lands are the Axis. Look at Europe.

Hitler was plotting his 3rd Reich!.   "It was April 1941. Hitler and Stalin had already divvied up Poland (containing a large Jewish population), and the Germans had swallowed most of Western Europe. On April 6, 1941, Hitler ordered his Wehrmacht to invade Yugoslavia and Greece, an effort to secure Germany’s flank for the Fuhrer’s upcoming attack on the Soviet Union.  (Note, both countries took by force, Poland, and then Germany turned on Russia.)

Europeans—largely women and children from Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Turkey and Yugoslavia—fled the onslaught. Where would they go?"  Did the group include Jews?
The new United Nations (UN) since 1942 had established MERRA (MIDDLE EAST RELIEF & REFUGEES ADMINISTRATION, camps in Syria, Egypt and Palestine.   You can bet your bottom dollar that no Jews were allowed into them.  They were being taken away by the Nazis for extermination.  Middle Easterners were being brain-washed already to rid themselves of Jews.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt declaring War against Germany
"The name "United Nations", coined by United States President Franklin D. Roosevelt was first used in the Declaration by United Nations of 1 January 1942, during the Second World War, when representatives of 26 nations pledged their Governments to continue fighting together against the Axis Powers.." The Axis were those siding with Germany: Italy, Ottoman Empire (Turkey and their Middle East Holdings) and Japan.
Croatia used to be Yugoslavia.  Jews also lived here since the Roman Times.  Jewish refugees had settled here from the 1492 Spanish Inquisition.  Belgrade and Sarajevo were important Jewish centers where the Sephardi traditions were preserved.  Serbia re-established her independence in the 19th century and treated Jews badly.  They turned around and followed the 1878 dictum towards Jews and their Jewish Problem disappeared.  Then there was a Balkan War before WWI in 1912-13 and former Austrian territories taken after WWI added an Ashkenazi group of Jews to their lands. In WWII the Germans supported by Bosnian Moslems and led by Haj Amin al Husseini, carried out deportations and massacres big-time.  After the war, only 10,500 Jews out of 72,000 Jews were left alive in Yugoslavia.  8,000 of them had immigrated to Israel after 1948.  The remaining Jewish population in 1990 was 4,800.  I see most countries with remaining Jews would have been an older population, feeling unable to handle newer conditions of language and work and homes.  The Italian General in Croatia refused to hand over Jews in his zone to the German army.  4 days later, some Mussolini's subordinates had been influenced by by opposition in the Vatican to the German-style anti-Semitism.  No Jews were deported from Italy to the death camps until after the fall of Mussolini and the German occupation of Northern Italy in 1943.  Deportations to Birkenau continued.  There they gassed in the last week of September 1942 several hundred from Slovakia.
Greece had been in contact with Jews since Biblical times and some Jews had lived there since by 2nd century BCE.  Synagogues were built there were found by Paul, the apostle of the New Testament.  Jews in the Byzantine Empire suffered terribly with attempts at enforcing wholesale conversion on them from the 7th century onward.  The Spanish Inquisition of 1492 and refugees from Spain overwhelmed the local communities and became entirely Sephardi in culture.  Only in CORFU was an original Greek rite of prayer preserved.  Salonica attracted more Jewish settlers, and other seaports was also selected for new Jewish communities.  Athens was a city with anti-Semitic attacks happening.  Salonica in 1912 was captured and under Greek rule and held one of the largest Jewish communities.  Populations between Greece and Turkey was exchanged.  Wholesale deportations of Jews occurred in 1941.  Many towns lost 90% of their Jewish population.  Taken away were 60,332 out of 76,420 Jews.  Salonica was left with 1,100 Jews.  Over 2,000 Greek Jews immigrated to Israel after 1948.  The Jewish population of Greece in 1990 was 4,875.  My neighbor in Haifa was a Greek Jewess who looked just like Sofia Loren only smaller.  Beautiful lady that she was, she and her young husband who was in the IDF had offered to board my German shepherd for me while I studied Hebrew in the Ulpan.  In 1944 on September 25th, the Chief Rabbi of Athens escaped from the capital disguised as a peasant and reached Thessaly and relative security.  There, Rabbi Barzilai encourage Greek Jews to join the partisans ar go into hiding.  He worked with the Greek partisans to arrange for more than 600 Greek Jews to be smuggled by boat across the Aegean Sea to safety of neutral Turkey.  In return, the Jews smuggled boots and money by sea to the Greek resistance.

Jew of Ottoman Empire
Turkey, home of the Ottoman Empire, is part of Asia Minor.  A synagogue was built there in 1326 in the MIddle Ages.  Later, from their conquest, many other Jewish communities were part of this Empire as Salonica was captured in 1430 and Constantinople in 1453.  The Spanish Inquitision of 1942 caused the Ottoman Empire to open their doors to the Jews of Spain and later for the Jewish Portugal and other land.  Jews became favored people!  They had become the valuable trading and artisan element and were a counterpoint to the potentially disloyal Christian minorities.  Istanbul (now Constantinople), Adrianople, Smyrna (Izmir) and Salonica became the intellectual centers of Sephardi Jewry.
Palestine was part of the Turkish Empire from 1517 till the end of WWI in 1917.  So was Egypt, Yemen, Iraq, etc.  Sultans applied their normal Moslem code against the Jews but were not really strict about it in every country.  That was that Jews were 2nd class citizens and had to pay a tax to really stay alive.  When WWI ended the Ottoman Empire in 1917was over,  and before that when Jews were entering Palestine from 1880 onward, the attitude  of the empire had started to change for the worse.  The book, THE SETTLERS, by Meyer Levin, describes the Jews return to Palestine in 1880 and onward in an exciting novel of 832 pages detailing it so well you'll feel you were there.
It's good that the UN helped out the Christian European refugees, but what did they do for the Jews who lost their 6 million lives?  Not a thing.  The USA turned away thousands of Jewish refugees.  The excuse used was that we could threaten National Security.  They said we might be Nazi spies.  If anyone ever knew what was happening in German from the middle 30s onward, they would NOT say such dumb things.

My uncle escaped Germany in May 1939, one of the last Jews to get out alive.  The attacks on Jews had become horrific.  He had spent time in a center later to be one of the gas chambers as a 21 year old walking his cow to his father's slaughter house to become sausage.  As a Jews, we aren't cruel to animals, just the opposite.  Our kosher laws include how to kill the animals without any pain involved, or even without the cow's knowledge of what will happen to them.   It was an idiodic excuse used to put a Jew in a horrible prison and torture him, which is what happened.  "“I think the fear was genuine, but misplaced,” Friedman said. “That is, none of the Jewish refugees who arrived in the United States has ever been found to have done anything in the interest of the Nazis. They fled them. They didn’t want to help them.”

Most notoriously, in June 1939, the German ocean liner St. Louis and its 937 passengers, almost all Jewish, were turned away from the port of Miami, forcing the ship to return to Europe; more than a quarter died in the Holocaust. My uncle missed boarding this fatal ship by one month, fleeingin the SS Washington, instead in May 1939.
Jews were turned back on the ship, St. Louis and not allowed to land.  They were forced to return to Europe and them most died in the gas chambers.
Patria with Jewish refugees that made it to Haifa,
was blown up  on November 25, 1940
As I read, the UN never helped the Jews.  It was the Jews who had to help themselves, as no one else did.  400,000 Jews of Warsaw and 2 million and more under German rule in November 1940 had no means of escaping death.  Jewish refugees from central Europe had reached Slovakia earlier and went by ship down the Danube River to the Black Sea and got to Palestine. Warsaw's Jews in late November faced the perils of the ghetto, and 1,771 of them, arrivals from  Germany, Austria and Czechoslovakia, had reached Haifa (Palestine) on 2 tramp steamers, the MILOS and the PACIFIC.  About 3 days later, the Atlantic appeard.  There refugess did not have valid certificates for Palestine.  The Brits were the law there. The Brits ordered them to transfer to another 4th boat, the PATRIA for deportation to go to the Indian Island of Mauritius.  On November 25th, during the transferring from ship to ship, a few Jews who were determined to stay, tried to keep the ship there by disabling the Patria to prevent it from sailing.   They misjudged their work, and the ship sunk with 250 refugees drowned in their efforts.  In the meantime, German propaganda was growing by leaps and bounds.    Remember, the Brits were told by the League of Nations to assist the Jews in creating the Jewish Homeland.  They held the 30 year mandate for Palestine.  Instead, they were known to be assisting Arabs to enter and kept Jews out at a time of their greatest peril.

We've always had to depend on ourselves.  The same has happened with Israel.  It's a little country that has done the fighting themselves.  How great it's been when there have been people who have helped with arms, etc.
This is why Israel is the Jewish Homeland.  "The Land of Israel was always regarded by Jews as the Jewish homeland. After its establishment in 1948, the State of Israel adopted the 1950 Law of Return restoring Israel as the Jewish homeland and making it the place of refuge for Jewish refugees at the time and into the future. This law was intended to encourage Jews to return to their homeland in Israel."  It took from the time of WWI of 1914- 1917 till 1948 to get this to happen.
