Miracles in Israel: 3 Discovery of Lost Tribes from India, Pakistan and Afghanistan-Pathans

Nadene Goldfoot

Pashtos numbered 49 million in 2009,

divided into 60 different tribes comprising 400 clans.
and many have joined the Taliban terrorists.
I'd like to believe that those who have not joined, but have been preyed on by them,
are the ones who have the Jewish roots, although a DNA test is the only
reliable way to tell who is who today.

"Pashtuns (or Pathans) traditionally call themselves the Bnei Israel (sons of Israel), claiming to be descended from Jewish tribes (their tribal names: Levani, Daftali, Yusuf, Ashuri, etc, hinting at Hebrew origins) that were marched through the Khyber Pass as part of the Assyrian conquest. And although now they make up the bulk of the Taliban, according to their oral history they were carried away from Israel in the Assyrian conquest and forced to convert to Islam by Muslims expanding their territories in 622

"Evidence of an ancient presence of Jews in Afghanistan is abundant. An ancient Jewish settlement has been identified in Herat (near the Iranian border); a graveyard there is littered with tombs which house long-dead Israelites with their names inscribed in Hebrew. Stone tablets with Hebrew inscriptions dating from 1115 to 1215 confirm the existence of a Jewish community in Firoz Koh, located between Herat and Kabul.

Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan, is also host to a long-abandoned, centuries old synagogue. Most of what might have confirmed a wide Jewish presence in Afghanistan, however, was obliterated by the Mongol Invasion of 1222, led by Genghis Khan."
The only tribes not lost to the remaining Jews were the tribe of Judah and of Levi.  Judah, the largest of the 12 tribes,  (76,500 strong at end of Exodus) was in the south which had broken off from Israel when King Solomon died in 920 BCE. The Assyrians had attacked the northern tribes.  Levites had no land of their own, so were scattered among all of them because of their unique position of being selected to perform the Temple Service and to be the instructors of the nation of Israel.  They had been allotted 42 Levitical cities scattered among the other tribes plus 6 cities of refuge.  They went about teaching everyone.  To live, they were to receive ma'aser...the tithing in grain and produce from the people for their income.  Aaron was from this tribe, and he produced the Cohen gene of J1.  He was the high priest of the nation.  So finding descendants of our lost 10 tribes has been a monumental wish since the event had happened.

The exodus's first census  of male Israelites was taken after leaving Egypt. Notice that Levites were not counted then or later as they would live among others.  In this way they were part of a group's count.   Many were taken by the Assyrians and Babylonians, but not all.  Some lived among Judah, Benjamin and Simeon. who were not taken at the time of attack.

When the Assyrians attacked Israel in 721 BCE, they took away the best of our men and their wives, and some from the tribe of Benjamin were in the group.  This tribe had produced King Saul, Israel's first king, and of course his descendants were leaders who were captured and found themselves taken away and finally settled among the Afghan tribe known as the Pathans who lived in eastern Afghanistan near the Pakistan border.   Today they are all part of the Sunni Muslims.  "Pashtuns, largest ethnic group in Afghanistan, ruled as the dominant ethno-linguistic group for over 300 years."

Pashtos visiting Jerusalem at the Western Wall.
Their history is that they come from Afghana, grandson of King Saul.
There were 30,699,037 in Pakistan in 2009
There were 13,750,117 in Afghanistan in 2016.
There were 13,000  in India in 2009.
Others have immigrated to all parts of the world today.   I have Pashtun friends who are very sympathetic towards Israel and believe in their ancestral connection.  Dr. Weil of Israel has studied them and is led to believe in their being from the Lost Tribes.  .

Jews had been living in their communities in Afghanistan since then and we know can be traced back 800 years ago because Benjamin of Tudela, a Jewish history of that age, claimed that there were 80,000 Jews in the Ghazni on the River Gozan.  This Jewish community was quite isolated and had little contact with the outside world.

In the 19th century, many Persian Jews came to Afghanistan fleeing the forced conversion in Meshad, Persia that was going on.  40,000 Jews lived there in Afghanistan in the 2nd part of the 19th century.

By 1948 when Israel was re-born through the League of Nations, the United Nations, and years of effort, 5,000 Jews were still in Afghanistan, but the majority had made aliyah to Israel in the 1950's. Recently, nearly all remaining Jews live in Kabul where there is a synagogue on Charshi Torabazein Street.

So Jews have lived among these Central Asian tribes since pre-Islamic times.  They have intermarried with the Afghan tribe known as the Pathans who were evidently influenced by these early Jewish settlements, and Jewish beliefs and customs were spread this way until Islam brought about forced Moslem conversions in 662 CE.  Muhammad had died in 632 CE, and his beliefs were spread forcefully.

Pathanas have as their legal system, something called Pashtunwali, which is very much like our written Torah and is quite different from Islam's laws.  The tribes are known to keep scrolls of their family's genealogy, and their oral tradition says they are from King Saul of the tribe of Benjamin.  Many of their tribal names are a lot like the Tribes of Israel's names such as:  Rabani, Haftali, Asuri, etc.  Some Pathans even call themselves "Beni Israel" which is Sons of Israel.  They look very Semitic.  The men will grow full beards and some even have side-locks as orthodox Jewish men will have.  Some practice circumcision on the 8th day after birth-a Jewish custom.  The men will wear a tallit-like cloak.  A tallit is the prayer shawl that Jewish men put on when praying.  Some families even light candles on Friday night-another well practiced custom of our Jewish women today that is thousands of years old.  When you add all this up, you cannot help but feel that among the Pashtos, are people with Jewish genes.  They indeed have reason to hold the belief of coming from the Lost Tribes of Israel.

What is surprising to me is that they declare the tribe of Benjamin as their ancestors.  Benjamin was close to Judah on the maps.  When Judah broke off from Israel after King Solomon died, some of Benjamin and even some of Simeon were living with Judah as the southern kingdom of Judah.  So I did not realize that any of Benjamin would have been carted away, but it certainly could have happened.  After all, they most likely were helping their brothers fight off the Assyrians, and also again in 586 BCE when the Babylonians took over the Assyrian provinces and boldly attacked Judah again, that they would have gathered up Benjaminites.  "The Pashtuns take extreme care of their genealogical records, called shijra. For example, a number of medieval Persian texts document the Pathan tradition that they are descended from Kish or Qais, their ancient king, who was a contemporary of Mohammed and is claimed to be the 37th direct descendent of King Saul through Pison, Saul's great-grandson (as mentioned in I Chronicles 8:35).

Actor Saif Ali Khan of India has Pashtun heritage.
A genetic study of Pashtos has been hard to do, though those living in India have been more willing.  Pakistan and Afghanistan Pashtos felt that they KNEW who they were and their connection to King Saul and the Hebrews and didn't want to take a test.  Be that as it will, testing has been done.  "Now an Indian researcher has collected blood samples from members of the Afridi tribe of Pashtuns who today live in Malihabad, near Lucknow, in northern India. Shahnaz Ali, from the National Institute of Immunohaematology in Mumbai, is to spend several months studying her findings at Technion, the Israel Institute of Technology, in Haifa. A previous genetic study in the same area did not provide proof one way or the other.
The results are:
"The haplogroup R1a (Y-DNA) is found at a frequency of 51.02% among the Pashtun people. (A certain R1a line has been found in Levites.)

Paragroup Q-M242(xMEH2, xM378) (of Haplogroup Q-M242 (Y-DNA)) was found at 16.3% in Pashtuns.Haplogroup Q-M242 is also found at a frequency of 18% in Pashtuns in the Afghan capital of Kabul.

"The Pashtun are raised on stories of their origins as Children of Israel.   Specifically, children of Ephraim. (Ephraim being known as Afridi in Pashto.) And preliminary DNA testing has shown that the Pashtun tribe known specifically as Afridi do, in fact, share genetic markers with their Jewish neighbors, with nearly half of Afridis tested sharing markers found widely in the Jewish population."  "Additional testing showed that the genetic homology between the Pashtun and European Jews was nearly identical to the homology observed between  European Jewish DNA and that of Iraqi and Iranian Jews." Intriguingly, the rare genetic disease  inclusion body myopathy 2, a muscle-wasting syndrome, was known to occur only in Jews--specifically Iranian Jews. That is, until doctors identified the same unusual disorder in the Pashtuns in Afghanistan--an observation though to result from a "founder mutation effect", i.e., an original mutation in an ancestor common to all current cases.

My father, DNA Q242 -QBZ67 a Jewish haplogroup

This is very exciting to me as my father is also a Q, and has had the title of M242 upon our first testing.  Deeper testing now gives us the tag of QBZ67.  That's the result of 67 alleles and more STRs tested.  I knew of a few Q Haplogroup men that matched my brother's haplogroup test from Afghanistan.  One dropped me as a friend when he realized I was Jewish, so it will be hard to convince them that we are not terrible people.

Jewish Q's make up 5% of the Jewish population today.  This means that we share a common ancestor for sure!  Q's started  in northern and central Asia 15,000 to 20,000 years ago and migrated through northern Eurasia, coming to Ur in Iraq where Abraham was born.  Many Native North and South Americans are also connected along the line and have Q lineage.

R1a is most common in populations in India and central and western Asia.  It was thought to have originated in the Eurasian steppes north of the Black and Caspian seas in the Kurgan people, the first speakeers of the Indo-European language who lived in the region about 3,000 BCE and were known to domesticate the horse.

" Pakistani Jews and Afghan Jews have largely relocated to Israel and the United States."
The Pashtuns who believe they have a Jewish connection say:   "We are a group of Pashtuns who are dedicated to reafirming our blood/genetic roots with our jewish brothers in Israel and around the world. We are the lost Israelite tribe and seek to re-establish our historical links with the Jews of the world."  They can be contacted.  https://www.facebook.com/PashtunsLostTribe/about/.

Here's the conundrum to this miracle of all miracles.  Some would like to come and visit but probably not to convert back to Judaism and live since they are Muslims.   It is a miracle to have discovered them, though after all these years.    Israel already has about 20-25% Muslims and 75% Jews, and this ratio cannot be changed.  It is the only Jewish state in the world.  There are already 48 Muslim majority states  including Afghanistan with 28,395,716  people and Pakistan with 172,800,000 already.  Let's hope for another miracle and have some return to qualify for the mitzva of ingathering spoken of by our prophets.   The biggest miracle of all is if they came back wanting to be converted back to Judaism like the Anusim, people forced for convert to Christianity's Catholicism from the Spanish Inquisition.

Pashtuns: and the Jewish Redemption: Afghanistan-Pakistan

Nadene Goldfoot
12 Tribes of Israel, from 12 sons of Jacob:  Judah and Benjamin made up the Empire of Judah after King Solomon died in 920 BCE.  This is when the Empire of Israel had divided itself.  Israel then stood alone for about 200 years before being attacked and lost the major part of their 10 remaining tribes.

Starting at the top or north of the map there was Asher, Naphtali, Manasseh, Zebulun, Issachar,  Gad, Ephraim, Benjamin, Dan, and Reuben to the east of the Dead Sea, Judah, the largest tribe and Dan, and Simeon which was farthest south.
The Pathans of Afghanistan and Pakistan are thought seriously to be the Lost Tribes of Israel from the Assyrian attack on Israel in 722-715 BCE.  That was 2,736 years ago, and people do change. From the time of entering the Promised Land with Joshua to the time of the Assyrian assault and kidnapping must have been about 1271 BCE when Moses died to 721 BCE when Assyrians attacked, which was 550 years, and the 2nd census taken by Moses showed the population of each tribe.
1. Reuben:         43,730
2. Simeon          22,200
3. Issachar         64,300
4. Zebulun         60,500                                    11. Benjamin 45,600
5. Dan               64,400                                    12. Judah      76,500
6. Naphtali        45,400
7. Gad              40,500                                 TOTAL:         601,730 entered the Promised Land
8. Asher           53,400
9. Ephraim       32,500
10 Manasseh   52,700

We had Jews out looking for the lost tribes because the redemption of the Jewish people cannot take place until we are re-united with the whole House of Israel.   There was Eldad ha-Dani, Benjamin of Tudela, David Reuveni, Antonio de Montezinos, Shaabbetai Tzevi or absorbed with the last Judean exiles who were deported forcefully to Media, Assyria and Mesopotamia in 497-586 BCE.    Many lost tribal members  with good proof are returning today to Israel to live, but not the Pashtuns who are thought to be a major part of the 10 lost tribes.  They have become Muslims and are against Israel.

Pashtun children of Peshawar, Pakistan
The fact is, however,  that many Pashtuns have held onto enough Jewish practices to make this fact believable.  History goes back to Kish who had 5 sons.  One was Irmia Jeremia and Afghana descended from him. Afghana was the grandson of King Saul of the tribe of Benjamin.  Other people think they came from the ancient Aryans who intermingled with the invaders of the land.   Today they make up about 60 tribes and each tribe lives in its own territory.
Possible Afridi Pashtuns, with  Jewish history, are Muslims today

DNA testing could tell us so much, but only a few have been tested who live in India today and a few from either Afghanistan or Pakistan.  One Pashtun I matched with was of the haplogroup Q1b1a.  5% of Jews have this haplogroup.   Family Tree DNA in Houston, Texas, has "The Afghan-Pakistan Y-DNA Project welcomes all those who come from, or trace their ancestry to the communities of present day Afghanistan or Pakistan."  All one has to do is go to their website and order a test for their Y (male side) dna.  The kit will be mailed to you.  There is no blood involvement.  In one test, 22 Y STRs were studied from Pashtuns in Pakistan and most frequent haplogroup was R1a1a with 49.3% frequency    They haven't found a connection yet to Jews from this testing company of Anthrogenica as yet.
Dr. Shalva Weil, an anthropologist at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, was doing research on the Lost Tribes in 2000.

Visiting Pathans in Jerusalem  at Western wall.
There was a planned study to be done on the Afridi Pashtuns, but though Dr. Weil did go to Pakistan, did not go further into the study.
Pashtun Afridi Warriors, 1895 and the Khyber Rifles Regiment

A previous genetic study had been done in the same area but didn't provide proof about their origins.  I do not know who did such a study but am sure it was not done with enough people.    Dr. Weil maintained that "Of all the groups, there is more convincing evidence about the Pathans than anybody else, but the Pathans are the ones who would reject Israel most ferociously because of their Muslim religion of today.  This is also ironic in that many have joined up and are part of the Taliban who in turn have been known to attack their own people.

Taliban  make up a major part of the Afghanis and many are Pashtuns.  Pashtuns make up 60% of Afghanis.  Afghanistan's population has been at about 28,395,716 people.  Pakistan has about 172,800,000.
                                                                               THE TALIBAN

"The majority of the Taliban are made up of Afghan Pashtun tribesmen.   The Taliban's leaders were influenced by Deobandi fundamentalism  and many also strictly follow the social and cultural norm called Pashtunwali.

"After the September 11 attacks on the U.S. and the PENTTBOM investigation, the United States made the following demands of the Taliban,
  1. Deliver to the U.S. all of the leaders of Al-Qaeda
  2. Release all foreign nationals that have been unjustly imprisoned
  3. Protect foreign journalists, diplomats, and aid workers
  4. Close immediately every terrorist training camp
  5. Hand over every terrorist and their supporters to appropriate authorities
  6. Give the United States full access to terrorist training camps for inspection

Pakistani journalist Hamid Mir interviewing al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden in Afghanistan, November 2001.  bin Laden was from Saudi Arabia,  born in 1957 His father,  Mohammed Awad bin Laden,  came to the kingdom of Saudi Arabia  from Hadramout (South Yemen) sometime around 1930.  His mother was a Syrian.  His family was very rich.

"In 1996, Osama bin Laden moved to Afghanistan from Sudan. He came without invitation, and sometimes irritated Mullah Omar with his declaration of war and fatwas against citizens of third-party countries,  but relations between the two groups improved over time, to the point that Mullah Omar rebuffed his group's patron Saudi Arabia, insulting Saudi minister Prince Turki while reneging on an earlier promise to turn bin Laden over to the Saudis.
Bin Laden was able to forge an alliance between the Taliban and al-Qaeda. Therefore, he brought much misery to the Pashtuns who wanted to just remain free of all war and terror.

NATO forces 'have used every weapon except the atom bomb" on the Taliban and have probably accidentally killed Pashtuns not part of this terrorist group as well.  In 2007 a new group of Taliban appeared called TTP, Therek Taleban of Pakistani.  They are 100 times more ruthless and brutal than the Mulla Omer Taliban.  There are 68 groups in the TTP and each one is working for different secret agencies.

"According to the United Nations, the Taliban and their allies were responsible for 75% of Afghan civilian casualties in 2010, 80% in 2011, and 80% in 2012."  It was "after the September 11 attacks, the Taliban were overthrown by the American-led invasion of Afghanistan. Later it regrouped as an insurgency movement to fight the American-backed Karzai administration and the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF).

The 2nd President of Israel, Itzhak Ben-Zvi, wrote "The Exiled and the Redeemed" in 1957 and said that Hebrew migrations into Afghanistan began with a sprinkling of exiles from Samaria who had been transplanted there by Shalmaneser, king of Assyria (719 BCE).

Jews have lived for generations among Afghan tribes who are Moslems.  "They have retained their amazing tradition about their descent from the 10 Tribes"  They maintain that they were once Hebrews and later embraced Islam.  Today there are millions of Pashtuns but not all seem to claim this history.

They live on their own land in a fortified residence called a qala which is divided in half.  There is the general living area and then the private quarters.  A high wall separates the 2 areas, so it's like 2 large rooms.  The extended family lives nearby.  Their land consists of barren rugged mountains, the Indus and the Hindu Kush, Syistan Plateau of Iran.  Communities are also found in 10 other countries.  They live by the unwritten code called Pushtunwali or the way of the Pushtun.

It consists of hospitality and protection for guests (like Abraham offered),  that fugatives can seek refuge there and be peaceful, but there is the right of revenge also.  Their tying of their  turbans in certain ways identifies their tribe, and in some places, rifles, pistols, knives and other weapons are part of their dress, so there are no concealed weapons here.  Men and women's clothing may be similar but women wear brighter colors.  The daftari is a man who owns some of the tribal lands and speaks in tribal councils who is considered with high esteem.

They lived through the cult of Brahminism and the harshness of Buddhism, so now cherish Islam as a unifying force.  Evidently they have forgotten the teachings of Judaism, only the practices remain seen today, such as lighting candles.

These Pashtuns claim they ruled India 3 times, the Ghelji Dynasty, the Sori and Lodhi.  Of the Sori king, Shar Shah Sori is the most famous.  His name was Fareid Khan Sori and his reforms are still valid.  After that Moghul came and the Afghans fought for their freedom.  After the Moughals, the British entered India and another phase started.  Some  may live in cities.  Some may even live in tents and therefore are nomadic.

Aside from the Pashtuns who converted to Islam, Jews (of the remaining tribe of Judah and Benjamin)  were found living in Afghanistan in the early medieval times but what happened to them after the 12th century is not known.  This is a community today from the 19th century which is an extension of the Persian community.  Most Afghan Jews speak Judeo-Persian.  Their religious rites are the same as the Persian Jews, but they do not study the Talmud, so they must have been cut off from that book by time.  They have been living in a medieval atmosphere and were confined to ghettos.  Their Jewish clothing was distinguished by black turbans.  There were 40,000 Jews in Afghanistan 100 years ago including wealthy merchants.  Repression by the government after 1870 and the mid-1930s reduced the Jewish population.    Most all emigrated to Israel after 1948 and about 50 were found living in Afghanistan in 1990.

" Pashtuns reigned as the dominant ethnic group, while being amongst the most intransigent tribes that fought British Indian incursions. The Pashtuns gained world-wide attention following the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979 and with the rise and fall of the Taliban, since they constituted the main ethnic contingent in the movement. Pashtuns represent an important community in Pakistan, where they have a dominant representation in the military and comprise the second-largest ethnic group."

DNA testing from India has Ms Shahnaz as the researcher.  While the vast majority of Afghan Taliban are Pashtun, the largest ethnic group in Afghanistan, the theory that they are descendants of the Afridi Pathans is widespread in the area. The theory is based on a variety of ancient historical texts and oral traditions of the Pashtun people themselves, but no scientific studies by any accredited organizations have upheld the claim. It continues to be believed by many Pashtuns, and has found advocates among some contemporary Muslim and (to a lesser extent) Jewish scholars.

Zahir Shah b: October 15, 1914, He d. at the Arg-i-Shahi, Kabul, 27th July 2007

Zahir Shah, the last king of Afghanistan, when asked about his ancestors, claimed that the royal family descended from the tribe of Benjamin.  This would be the same claim of others that said they were from King Saul of Israel.

The irony of the Pashtun history is that these Israelites were taken  in 721 BCE from their brothers of the nation of Judah and held in captivity but remained alive and multiplied as a Muslim people after 632.  The new nation of Judah remained, only to become the Jews who were the scapegoats of the Christian world in that they were attacked by the Nazis in the 1930's and 6 million were slaughtered.  Now there are barely 13 or 14 million Jews remaining out of 2 of the 12 tribes.  Yet the numbers of the Pashtun, the remaining 10 tribes, numbers anywhere from 1.5 million to 40-45 million people.  By their Taliban group teaming up with Osama bin Laden of al Qaeda, they brought down more killing on their own people.  They brought down the wrath of the whole NATO allies and especially the USA.

Arab, Haj Amin al-Husseini and Hitler in Germany, beginning of WWII

The biggest irony of all is that the Nazis admired Islam.  What would they have thought of the bloodline if they knew Pashtuns carried Jewish blood?  They were so sure that Jews, who they were jealous of in reality, were an inferior race.  Here they were, stemming from barbarism when Jews were reading and writing and trading throughout the world, and they thought Jews were inferior.

Taliban Terrorists in Pakistan-Terrorists Against Females Getting Education

Terrorists  declared war against their government of Pakistan in 2007.  The fighting had earlier simmered in the NW tribal areas  bordering eastern Afghanistan, where Al Qaeda militants fled after the 9/11 in 2001 terrorist attacks in the USA on the Twin Towers and other places.

The Taliban are made up of many Pashtun or Pashto tribesmen and started fighting during the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in the 1980's.  It was then that the USA trained and armed them.  It became a movement and spread throughout Afghanistan in the early 90s forming their own government and ruling as the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan from September 1996 until December 2001.  Kandahar was their capital. It gained diplomatic recognition from Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

Many Pashtuns claim to be from the Lost Tribes of Israel back when Assyria attacked Israel in 721 BCE and carried away the best of the population of young men who would make good slaves.  Though they are all Muslims today, a few are even are supportive of  Israel. Israel's foreign ministry started funding research to look into the Pashto roots being from the Lost Tribes.   Dr. Shalva Weil is a Senior Researcher at The Research Institute for Innovation and Education at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem and had been researching the Pashtos.  The last king of Afghanistan, a Pathan, Zahir Shah who was king until 1973, claimed to be from the tribe of Benjamin as many Pathans have claimed as their roots.  Others have claimed to be from the tribe of Ephraim.  I'm afraid that when the Assyrians had attacked, they most likely took whoever was closest, and it could have been a mixed tribal group at the time fighting against the Assyrians.

Ephraim and Benjamin's land were neighbors.  This is why Judah was also left with some Benjaminites being the last surviving tribe and the southern part of Israel that had broken off when Solomon died to be Judah.

2012 and Pashto Malala Yousafzai in Mingora, Pakistan of Swat Valley, a student and an activist for females getting an education,  was shot in the head but survived while traveling home from school.  She received a Nobel Prize for demanding education for girls in Pakistan.  Her father was the principal of the school and backed her.  "When she was 14, Malala and her family learned that the Taliban had issued a death threat against her. Though Malala was frightened for the safety of her father—an anti-Taliban activist—she and her family initially felt that the fundamentalist group would not actually harm a child.

In December 16, 2014,  the nation of Pakistan was shocked by the Taliban attacking a school in Peshawar which was run by the army, the capital of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa. 141 schoolchildren were massacred.  Pakistan's NW population are now happy that the government has finally declared war to the end against the Taliban after executing this massacre.

July 27, 2015 another military backed school was attacked by the Taliban and over 100 students killed in Peshawar.  They were attacked during the time of taking exams.

The vast majority of Pakistanis living in the most peaceful east had been oblivious to the conflict that was taking place in their region since 2007 when militants declared war against the government.  The school, situated in the western provinces of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, provinces that makes up the majority of Pashtuns.  They are the 3rd largest ethnic group and number around 30 million of the country's 200 million population.  Pakistan is the 2nd largest Muslim country with Indonesia being #1 in Muslim population.  97% of Pashtuns are Sunni and some are Shi'a.

"West Pakistan (Urdu: مغربی پاکستان‎, Mag̱ẖribī Pākistān IPA: [məɣrɪbiː pɑːkɪst̪ɑːn]; Bengali: পশ্চিম পাকিস্তান, Pôścim Pākistān) was one of the two exclaves created at the formation of the modern State of Pakistan following the 1947 Partition of India."

The Taliban have been attacking the government forces and civilians for the past 7 years and have killed more than 50,000.  A Pashtun politician was killed by a Taliban bomb in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa's Swat valley in 2007.  Falaknaz Asfandyar is his widow and said, "Had a smaller attack taken place earlier in the Punjab province, the reaction would have been far quicker and more extensive.  We Pakistanis have become so immune to the conflict.  I just hope they won't forget this...that we won't need an even bigger tragedy."

Pashtuns are represented in Pakistan's political structure including the powerful military.  In the past years its fighters were split between supporting government forces and supporting the Taliban militants.  The civilians were caught in the middle.  They are dependent on the army to fight the militants living around them.  Then they find themselves in mass evacuations and harsh treatment when 10s of 1,000s of troops move in to retake the territory.

President Obama said he had planned to cut the number of US troops in Afghanistan through the end of  2015 from 9800 to 5000 and then leave completely by the end of 2016 when his office is ended.  He has since changed his mind which Afghan President Ashraf Ghani is happy about.  Obama said he does plan to pullout at the end of 2016, however but the troops will stay through 2015.

While in power, it enforced a strict interpretation of Sharia, or Islamic law,  an interpretation of which leading Muslims have been highly critical. The Taliban were condemned internationally for their brutal treatment of women.  The majority of the Taliban are made up of Afghan Pashtun tribesmen. The Taliban's leaders were influenced by Deobandi fundamentalism, and many also strictly follow the social and cultural norm called Pashtunwali.

I do not think that any Talibaner could be from the Lost Tribes.  They have gone so afar from the principals of Judaism, even in the days of 721 BCE, that no one would want to claim them.  To attack children, and females at that, is something only cowards would do.

They are teeming up with Iran to fight against ISIS, someone worse-if possible-than they are.  Iran and the Taliban used to be deadly enemies.

“A Muslim won’t break a commitment,”An ex-Taliban who recently switched allegiance to ISIS, is Mullah Khan Muhammad Noorzai.   Noorzai declared, “The Taliban are not true Muslims, and not mujahideen [holy warriors] either. Now our jihad against the ignorant so-called Taliban will go on forever.”
Update: 7/29/15  It was announced this morning on NBC that Taliban leader Mullah Omar has been declared dead and possibly has been these past 2 years.
