Pashtuns Originated From King Saul of Israel

Nadene Goldfoot
Wonders of the modern age; I just found out this is photoshopped.
I thought it was an actual group of Pashtuns visiting Jerusalem some time back,
maybe in the 70s.  To me it's still a wonderful picture.  Hope it comes
true one of these days when Pashtun tourists will visit.

There is a strong tradition, oral and written, that some of today's Pashtuns of Afghanistan came from King Saul, Israel's very first king.  We find this in a book published in 1635 titled MAHSAN-I-AFGHANI.  " Today, several Afghan tribes including the Durrani, Yussafzai, Afridi and Pashtun believe they are decedents of King Saul. They call themselves Bani-Israel, similar to the Hebrew, B'nai Israel, meaning the children of Israel. Even some Muslim scholars and writers accept this. The exiled Afghan Royal family also traces its roots to ancient Israel, the tribe of Benjamin specifically. As evidence, they cite Makhzan-i-Afghani , a chronicle published in 1635, in the time of King Jahangir by Khawaja Nimatullah of Herat.

King Saul died in battle with his son, Jonathan

The traditional story is that it all started with Saul being chosen as king from the tribe of Benjamin.  Saul was the son of Kish of the tribe of Benjamin.  The prophet, Samuel, was a seer, a man of vision and highly trusted by his people who had no king over them.  Instead, they relied on regional leaders to advised their people who relied on their memories of the rules handed down in their families from Moses, leader of the Israelites out of bondage of 400 years from Egypt who had lived in Canaan previously to their enslavement.

Samuel annointing David as king

Countries surrounding them had kings.  They clamoured for a king, too, so Samuel set out to seek the perfect king.  He had been on of those regional advisors himself,  called judges, and turned out to Israel's last one, being he chose the replacement for all of them in existence then.  Samuel himself came from a Levitical family living on Mt. Ephraim and in Ramah in the land of Zuph;  men of the tribe of Levi who were those special descendants of Aaron serving in the Temple as the Cohens or priests.  His mother was a special woman, one of those who had trouble conceiving in the first place.  She had consecrated him before he was born to serve G-d as a Nazirite who would serve the sanctuary at Shiloh.  This was in the days before Jerusalem became the capital, sometime around 1500 BCE.  Samuel served as a Judge in Ramah and worked in Bethel, Gilgal and Mizpeh.  Was his judgement always infallible?  Evidently not always.

The Israelites were being threatened by the Philistines and the Ammonites and a leader was needed to fight them off.  Samuel saw the leadership qualities that Saul had and chose him to be the king.  Saul immediately chose men already quite well trained and had himself an army.  They defeated their enemies.  At Michmash they had a spectacular victory stopping the Philistine danger.

Moabites practiced human sacrifice

Ammonite battle

Saul and the army took on punitive expeditions against the Moabites, Ammonites and Arameans.

As for the Israelite religion at that point in time, he worked on purifying it to regain its Mosaic rulings, which they were falling away from by believing in witchcraft, a prevailing belief surrounding them in other lands.

Young David made a name for himself taking on
the Philistine giant, Goliath and outwitting him, killed him
with his sling and a stone landing on his head between the eyes.

However, he and the prophet Samuel did not always see eye to eye, and friction between them grew.  A young man named David had joined Saul's royal court and he was the problem.  He was the youngest son of Jesse of the tribe of Judah, who was the grandson of Ruth and Boaz.  He lived in Bethlehem.  Boaz was a wealthy man with much property.

At age 25, David had become the armor-bearer for King Saul.  He was the best friend of Saul's son, Jonathan.  David showed what a great and clever soldier he was in battle and eventually wound up marrying Jonathan's sister, Michal.  Saul was becoming slightly paranoid, becoming jealous of the attention that David was getting, both from his own family members and from others in the court.  His jealousy became so bad that David recognized it, causing him to leave the court and join up with Achish, king of Gath, shown on the map above, a little king in Judah.  He hoped this would be a cooling off period for Saul to calm down.

Besides the jealousy, Saul suffered from some ailment like seizures that was taking a toll on him physically.  This had been a time when David would calm him down with his harp playing and singing.  It hadn't been happening with David in Gath.  David thought that Saul might be missing him more for that then being driven from him through his jealousy.  Note David's hair.  He was said to be a gingy (red haired).

David returned to Israel after Saul and 3 of his sons had been defeated and killed at battle over Mt. Gilboa.  He settled in Hebron and then declared himself King of Judah.  Saul's general was Abner, a cousin of his.  Abner's father was Ner, and Ner and Kish were brothers, sons of Abiel.   At first, Saul's general, Abner, sided with Eshbaal , AKA Ish-Bosheth b: 11th century BCE)  Saul's 4th son who Saul had crowned king by Abner when in Mahanaim.  Eshbaal was Saul's only son to fight that lived to fight in the battle of Gilboa.

King David

With Abner now siding with David as their king, the country found itself in an indecisive war between the 2 crowned kings.  General Abner continued to side with David.  Eshbaal was then murdered by 2 of his own generals, Baanah and Rechab.  King David had these 2 generals executed for regicide.  David had become the favorite king of all time.  In those days, family was important.  It's surprising that Abner turned against Saul, showing that Saul did have enough problems to cause a cousin to side with an out of family king instead.

Saul's son, Jonathan, had a son named Mephibosheth.  When King Saul and his sons had died in battle at Mt. Gilboa, Mephibosheth was only 5 years old.  His nurse grabbed him when she heard of his father and grandfather's deaths and started to run for cover, as the custom in those days was to slaughter the remaining descendants by the new conqueror.  She unfortunately dropped Mephibosheth who fell on his leg so bad that it caused him to be lame.  In those days they didn't know how to set bones properly, evidently.  David treated Mephibosheth well, honoring Saul and his former best friend, Jonathan in that way.  Jonathan had always defended David against his father Saul's anger.

Supposedly, King Saul had a son called Jeremiah.  This could be one we know of but going by another name due to changes in languages.  Jeremiah was said to have a son called Afghana.  Jeremiah died at the same time that King Saul died in battle with Jonathan.  Afghana was raised by King David and remained in the royal court during King Solomon's reign according to the story.

To me, Jonathan and Jeremiah sound like the same person.  Mephibosheth and Afghana also sound like the same people, as Mephibosheth was also raised by King David in his court.  As for living through King Solomon's reign, let's look at birth dates.
David ruled from 1010 to 970 BCE  His son,
Solomon ruled from 961 to 920 BCE.
Mephibosheth was 5 when Jonathan was killed.  From 1010 to 961 was 49 years.  Mephibosheth could have been at least 54 years old to have reached the period of Solomon's reign.  So it's possible that this could have been Afghana of the legend.

About 400 years later, the Afghana family descendants had to flee to a land called Gur, which was in central Afghanistan.  They lived and traded with their neighbors and by the year of 662, when Islam arrived after Mohammad had died in 632, the sons of Israel in Gur converted to Islam with 7 representatives of the Afghanis.  The leader of the sons of Israel was called Kish.  This was, as you remember, the name of Saul's father.  This shows that they carried their history with them at least orally to have named someone Kish.  Remarkably, the leadership quality of the family was carried with them as well through their DNA.

According to the oral tradition, Muhammad had rewarded this family for their converting and was given the added responsibility of spreading Islam among all the Afghanis.  Kish's Hebrew name had been changed to Arab-a Rashid by Mohammad.  All this is recorded by Rabbi Marvin Tokayer.

Tokayer added that he had met a tribe in the Khyber Pass area of Afghanistan with several names of the Bible's Joseph-first son of Jacob and Rachel.  He knew of Yusufzai (Joseph) and Yusufuzi (children of Joseph) and Yusafzad.  Their tradition is that they were carried away from their ancient homeland, wrote Tokayer.

We know that Joseph wound up in Egypt but was not part of the 10 lost tribes of Israel taken by the Assyrians in 721 BCE to become our legend of the 10 LOST TRIBES OF ISRAEL.  However, his 2 sons inherited his land and were given their shares by Moses and Joshua.  They were Manasseh and Ephraim.  Could it be that these Afghanis were from Joseph's 2 sons?  Very possible as they were from the 10 northern tribes attacked and taken by the Assyrians.

According to Wikipedia, the name, KABUL, is taken from the biblical story of Cain and Abel; the Cain is the K sound and Abul is from Abel.  It also says its origin is Persian.  "Kabul (Persian: کابل‎, translit. Kābol, Pashto: کابل‎, translit. Kābəl) is the capital and largest city of Afghanistan, located in the eastern section of the country. It is also a municipality, forming part of the greater Kabul Province. According to estimates in 2015, the population of Kabul is 4.635 million, which includes all the major ethnic groups of Afghanistan. Rapid urbanization had made Kabul the world's 75th largest city."  "Afghanistan, also called Khorasan or Khurasan in medieval Muslim and Hebrew sources, has a Jewish history that may date back 2,700 years to the destruction of the Temple and the Babylonian exile."

I note that Afghanistan was on the Silk Road to China from Europe.
Jews became traders on this Silk Road connecting Jerusalem to Rome this way.

Saul was a nice village on a mountain of Afghanistan.  It was located near Gardez, a town east of Ghazni in Afghanistan.  In 1080, Rabbi Moses ibn Ezra mentioned that he found 40,000 Jews paying tribute to Ghazni.  Benjamin of Tudela in the 12th century, a well known Jewish historian, counted 80,000 Jews living there.  It looks like Jews had moved there after being threatened by Islamic conversion who had been living in Arabia.  They must have found refuge there even though the land itself had become Muslim.  Like most Muslim states, though Jews were treated as 2nd class citizens, there were ways of staying alive, with better chances than staying in the Christian countries of that period.

I note that in 1096, 16 years later, Jews in European towns were massacred by German Crusaders on their way to Jerusalem.
1099, 19 years later, the whole Jewish community in Jerusalem was massacred by the Crusaders.

Previously, Jews of the Byzantine Empire were forcibly converted to Christianity in 640, 721 and 873, so for those 3 centuries Jews were threatened by conversions to others' Christian religion.  Those dates just stand out as some of the worst experiences they had.  The threat hung over them like a black cloud.

It's amazing to me now that the tables have turned.  Christianity is now the more accepting religion, at least not threatening our lives, while Islam has taken the turn and some of them have turned into ISIS, killing everyone, Jews, Christians and even many Muslims not adhering to their horrible way of worshipping G-d mixed in with a lot of bloody killings.

From 1115 to 1215, there was another Jewish community in Firoz Koh that thrived which was located between Herat and Kabu.  We know because stone tablet with Hebrew inscriptions dated back to then.  This was told to us by Alden Oreck.  I wonder if they were head stones from a grave yard.

Then something terrible happened.  Genghis Khan invaded Afghanistan in 1222.  The Jewish communities were reduced to isolated pockets, probably those high in the mountains.  Shortly after that, all Jews were expulsed from England in 1290.  Was there a connection?  Was it the vibes in the air we breathe?  Word does get around, even without the internet.

Pashtuns living in Afghanistan, Pakistan, India
families remembering their history of coming from Saul and Benjamin,
tribes taken by Assyrians long ago, still practicing some long ago
customs such as candles on Friday nights.  There were about 9 million
Pathans living in Afghganistan.  When Jews lived here, they
unfortunately were not at the point of mixing with the Pashtuns or
curious about this shared history as we are today.  I suppose
as the saying goes, there is a time and place for everything to happen.

In 1948 Israel became a state after waiting for the moment for 2,000 years.  5,000 Jews were living in Afghanistan then, and Muslims everywhere turned against their Jewish population on or after May 14th, the day it was announced in the United Nations.  Most were forced to emigrate to Israel, whether they had hoped to or not.  Some even opted to go to New York, USA in the early 1950s because of the change in Afghanistan's attitude towards Jews.  Zabon Simintov found himself being the only Jew who remained there.  Even Al Jazeera wrote about him.

Why Jews Are Interested in the Pathans

Nadene Goldfoot

Who are the Pathans?  They are people some have called Afghans, or Sons of the Pashtu as their language is Pashtu.  They might also identify themselves by their ancient name of SONS OF ISRAEL, otherwise known as Bnei Israel.  They are Muslims.
The Pathans number 8-9 million just in Afghanistan.  10 to 11 million live in Pakistan. Altogether an including those in India, they could number  20 million.  They live in the border region between Afghanistan and Pakistan.  About 2 million of them live as nomads, and are written about in great detail in CARAVANS by James Mitchener.  What do they look like?  They look like Jews of those regions have looked, though there may be none there now to make a comparison.  Many of their customs seem to be quite ancient ones, coming from Jewish customs.  Even other data collected show a definite connection to the ancient Jewish people.

Pashto (/ˈpʌʃtoʊ/, rarely /ˈpæʃtoʊ/, Pashto: پښتو‎ Pax̌tō [ˈpəʂt̪oː]), sometimes spelled Pukhto, is the language of the Pashtuns. It is known in Persian literature as Afghāni(افغانی) and in Urdu and Hindi literature as Paṭhānī. Speakers of the language are called Pashtuns or Pakhtuns and sometimes Afghans or Pathans It is an Eastern Iranian language, belonging to the Indo-European family.Pashto is one of the two official languages of Afghanistan, and it is the second-largest regional language of Pakistan, mainly spoken in the west and northwest of the country. In Pakistan, it is the majority language of the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the northern districts of Balochistan. Along with Dari Persian, Pashto is the main language among the Pashtun diaspora around the world. The total number of Pashto-speakers is estimated to be 45–60 million people worldwide.  Many of them deny any claim to originating from the 10 Lost Tribes, too.

Pathans today generally live between the city of Kabul, Afghanistan and the Indus River area in Pakistan.  They live throughout over half of Afghanistan and usually hold some sort of power in the areas where they live.  Many live in Pushtunistan on the Pakistani border.  Afghanistan backs the Pakistani Pathans' need for independence, and  this causes constant tension in the region.  Though they are Muslims, they are also Pathans and have their own list of laws they live by.

Pathan girl from Pakistan

Afghanistan is one of the least developed countries in Asia.  It's vastly beautiful land but hard to support the life with many mountainous areas.  It is here that they can continue to live like their ancient forefathers' old tribal life.  They keep the practice of having tribal chiefs and the family unit all obey the family elder.  This system is "PASHTUNWALI."  It's one amazing code of laws with similar part found in the Torah.

Imran Khan, new Prime Minister of Pakistan,
Niazi Pathans
He is a famous cricket player.
  The Niazi Pathans
mainly live in the areas of Punjab .

Most of the people are illiterate.  Most work  as farmers or raising sheep and other animals.  They live in villages while some are nomadic.  Until recently, Afghanistan was governed by Islamic religious law.1  More than 90% are Sunni Muslims.  The people are in general very healthy, tall and strong with light skin and a pleasant personality.  They are warriors, and actually carry arms from a young age.  They are hard working people, wise, truthful and extremely loyal.  They also are known worldwide for the "exemplary" hospitality.  In fact, a movie has been made about it.

Pathan tourists visiting in Jerusalem at the Wall

What also makes them so unique in the Middle East is that they don't look like the people around them.  People have always wondered about their ethnic origins.  Here they exist among the Indo-Aryans, the Turks, the Mongolians and the Persians.  Many peoples and nations and tribes have come and gone through this land, so it's been hard to trace their history.  However, in their laws, they are not to marry outside their people of Pashtun heritage.  Even the British, who ruled Afghanistan for a long period of time, had problems telling Pathans from Jews and would call the Pathans-the Jews.

Do I see the name of Yusuf (Joseph)?

So here we are, finding out that their tradition of coming from the Ten Tribes of Israel seems to be true.  They were people exiled by the Assyrian empire 140 years before the destruction of  King Solomon's Temple in Jerusalem in 586 BCE.  They do carry on the tradition of their name:  the Sons of Israel, and their appearance.  Today, a simple autosomal DNA test can identify where a person's genes come from.

My own ethnic heritage from Family Tree DNA in Houston, Texas, USA tells me this:
that 2% of my genes come from Asia (central and South east;), 12% eastern Europe; besides showing I'm Ashkenazi Jewish.

Pathans in Kashmir of Northern India

Pathans are still a tribal people.  We Jews with grandparents from Europe know we are Ashkenazi Jews, but this is not the name of a tribe.  Our tribe would be the tribe of Judah; perhaps even some might be from the tribe of Benjamin, but we don't know; basically Judah since that's the southern land that the tribe was ordained to live in by Moses and Joshua.  The northern 10 other tribes have kept their tribal knowledge quite well as asked to do by Moses.   They may from the tribe of Reuben; the Shinwari (Shimon), the Lewani (Levi);  the  Daftani (Naftali);  the Jaji (Gad);  the Ashuri (Asher);  the Yusuf-Zai (Sons of Yosef);  the Afridi (Ephraim, etc.  The Pathans explain the differences in the tribal  names are due to  the different dialects of the languages, so that Jaji was originally Gad.

Afridis at Jamrūd Fort (1866); photo by Charles Shepherd. Jamrūd Fort was strategically located at the eastern entrance to the Khyber Pass in present-day Pakistan.

I notice that the Afridi Tribe (Ephraim) is quite large.  It happens that the kingdom of Israel was also called the kingdom of "Ephraim."
King Jeroboam( 933-912BCE)was of the tribe of Ephraim.
1 Kings 11:26
And Jeroboam the son of Nebat, an Ephrathite of Zereda, Solomon's servant, whose mother's name was Zeruah, a widow woman, even he lifted up his hand against the king.
Jeroboam had been the superintendent of forced labor for King Solomon.  Judah had rebelled and broke away from Israel, taking Solomon's son and next king with them, so Israel needed a king, and Jeroboam got the position.

My father would love this style.  He doesn't have to wear a tie!

One big tradition of the Afghan royal family is that they trace their family  origin to the tribe of Benjamin of which King Saul was a member.  This tradition was first published in a book in the year 1635.  According to tradition, King Saul had a son, Irmia (Jeremiah) who had a son named Afghana.  Irmia died at or near King Saul's death and Afghana was reared by King David.  Maybe Irmia was the son of Jonathan, David's close friend.  Israelite kings did have many wives in those days who had children.  Afghana remained in the royal court during King Solomon's reign.

400 years later during the Babylonian exile of the southern kingdom of Judah, the descendants of Afghana fled to Gur (Hazarat Jat by todays name which is in central Afghanistan.  The tribe settled and traded with the people around it.  Then in 662, Khalid Ibn al-Walid, the head of the Kuraiysh tribe, was to spread Islam among the Afghan tribes.  He met the SONS OF ISRAEL" in Gur and converted them to Islam.  The leader of the SONS OF ISRAEL was Kays or Kish, named after Saul's father.  Kish changed his name to Ibn Rashid and was given the job of spreading Islam among his people.

Because of the civil war that has persisted in Afghanistan since 1979, roughly 2 million Pathans have left for Pakistan as refugees.

Jews are told in their Tanakh (Bible) in II Kings, 15:29 "In the days of Pekah king of Israel, came Tiglath-Pileser, King of Assyria, and took Ijon, and Abel-Beth-Maacah, and Janoah, and Kedesh, and Hazor, and Gilead, and Galilee, all the land of Naphtali;  and he carried them captive to Assyria".  These were names of towns that were attacked.

Then Ten Tribes were cut off, without spiritual leadership or books on Jewish Law and values.  Only if they had any Levites among them could any teaching be had, for they were the teachers, but they would have been without materials, such as the Torah.  The prophecy is that the Ten Tribes will be reunited with Judah at the end of days.

The Pathans still have the tradition of circumcision on the 8th day, wearing a fringed garment, knowledge of the Sabbath, knowledge of pure and impure foods.

Some even wear amulets with "Shma Israel" in Hebrew.

They still know the names of lost tribes such as Reuvan, Naphtali, Gad, Asher and the sons of Joseph.  Pashtu, their language, has many Hebrew words.

1:  On 27 November 2001, a Conference was held in Bonn, Germany, which brought together representatives of the resistance groups, consisting of the main civil war parties and warlords, pro-Zahir Shah technocrats and intellectuals, and two other small Afghan groups based in Pakistan and Iran (Wardak 2005: 65). Although the present anti-Taliban groups could not be considered to represent the Afghan people, the 'Agreement on Provisional Arrangements in Afghanistan pending the Re-Establishment of Permanent Government Institutions', also known as the 'Bonn Agreement', provided a framework for the process of state formation to create a broad-based, multi-ethnic, and representative government in Afghanistan. Executive powers were vested in Hamid Karzai, a Pashtun, as head of the Interim Administration of Afghanistan on 22 December 2001. Karzai was reconfirmed as the head of the Interim Administration by the 1,550 members of an Emergency Loya Jirga held in Kabul on 10 June 2002.

Miracles in Israel: 3 Discovery of Lost Tribes from India, Pakistan and Afghanistan-Pathans

Nadene Goldfoot

Pashtos numbered 49 million in 2009,

divided into 60 different tribes comprising 400 clans.
and many have joined the Taliban terrorists.
I'd like to believe that those who have not joined, but have been preyed on by them,
are the ones who have the Jewish roots, although a DNA test is the only
reliable way to tell who is who today.

"Pashtuns (or Pathans) traditionally call themselves the Bnei Israel (sons of Israel), claiming to be descended from Jewish tribes (their tribal names: Levani, Daftali, Yusuf, Ashuri, etc, hinting at Hebrew origins) that were marched through the Khyber Pass as part of the Assyrian conquest. And although now they make up the bulk of the Taliban, according to their oral history they were carried away from Israel in the Assyrian conquest and forced to convert to Islam by Muslims expanding their territories in 622

"Evidence of an ancient presence of Jews in Afghanistan is abundant. An ancient Jewish settlement has been identified in Herat (near the Iranian border); a graveyard there is littered with tombs which house long-dead Israelites with their names inscribed in Hebrew. Stone tablets with Hebrew inscriptions dating from 1115 to 1215 confirm the existence of a Jewish community in Firoz Koh, located between Herat and Kabul.

Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan, is also host to a long-abandoned, centuries old synagogue. Most of what might have confirmed a wide Jewish presence in Afghanistan, however, was obliterated by the Mongol Invasion of 1222, led by Genghis Khan."
The only tribes not lost to the remaining Jews were the tribe of Judah and of Levi.  Judah, the largest of the 12 tribes,  (76,500 strong at end of Exodus) was in the south which had broken off from Israel when King Solomon died in 920 BCE. The Assyrians had attacked the northern tribes.  Levites had no land of their own, so were scattered among all of them because of their unique position of being selected to perform the Temple Service and to be the instructors of the nation of Israel.  They had been allotted 42 Levitical cities scattered among the other tribes plus 6 cities of refuge.  They went about teaching everyone.  To live, they were to receive ma'aser...the tithing in grain and produce from the people for their income.  Aaron was from this tribe, and he produced the Cohen gene of J1.  He was the high priest of the nation.  So finding descendants of our lost 10 tribes has been a monumental wish since the event had happened.

The exodus's first census  of male Israelites was taken after leaving Egypt. Notice that Levites were not counted then or later as they would live among others.  In this way they were part of a group's count.   Many were taken by the Assyrians and Babylonians, but not all.  Some lived among Judah, Benjamin and Simeon. who were not taken at the time of attack.

When the Assyrians attacked Israel in 721 BCE, they took away the best of our men and their wives, and some from the tribe of Benjamin were in the group.  This tribe had produced King Saul, Israel's first king, and of course his descendants were leaders who were captured and found themselves taken away and finally settled among the Afghan tribe known as the Pathans who lived in eastern Afghanistan near the Pakistan border.   Today they are all part of the Sunni Muslims.  "Pashtuns, largest ethnic group in Afghanistan, ruled as the dominant ethno-linguistic group for over 300 years."

Pashtos visiting Jerusalem at the Western Wall.
Their history is that they come from Afghana, grandson of King Saul.
There were 30,699,037 in Pakistan in 2009
There were 13,750,117 in Afghanistan in 2016.
There were 13,000  in India in 2009.
Others have immigrated to all parts of the world today.   I have Pashtun friends who are very sympathetic towards Israel and believe in their ancestral connection.  Dr. Weil of Israel has studied them and is led to believe in their being from the Lost Tribes.  .

Jews had been living in their communities in Afghanistan since then and we know can be traced back 800 years ago because Benjamin of Tudela, a Jewish history of that age, claimed that there were 80,000 Jews in the Ghazni on the River Gozan.  This Jewish community was quite isolated and had little contact with the outside world.

In the 19th century, many Persian Jews came to Afghanistan fleeing the forced conversion in Meshad, Persia that was going on.  40,000 Jews lived there in Afghanistan in the 2nd part of the 19th century.

By 1948 when Israel was re-born through the League of Nations, the United Nations, and years of effort, 5,000 Jews were still in Afghanistan, but the majority had made aliyah to Israel in the 1950's. Recently, nearly all remaining Jews live in Kabul where there is a synagogue on Charshi Torabazein Street.

So Jews have lived among these Central Asian tribes since pre-Islamic times.  They have intermarried with the Afghan tribe known as the Pathans who were evidently influenced by these early Jewish settlements, and Jewish beliefs and customs were spread this way until Islam brought about forced Moslem conversions in 662 CE.  Muhammad had died in 632 CE, and his beliefs were spread forcefully.

Pathanas have as their legal system, something called Pashtunwali, which is very much like our written Torah and is quite different from Islam's laws.  The tribes are known to keep scrolls of their family's genealogy, and their oral tradition says they are from King Saul of the tribe of Benjamin.  Many of their tribal names are a lot like the Tribes of Israel's names such as:  Rabani, Haftali, Asuri, etc.  Some Pathans even call themselves "Beni Israel" which is Sons of Israel.  They look very Semitic.  The men will grow full beards and some even have side-locks as orthodox Jewish men will have.  Some practice circumcision on the 8th day after birth-a Jewish custom.  The men will wear a tallit-like cloak.  A tallit is the prayer shawl that Jewish men put on when praying.  Some families even light candles on Friday night-another well practiced custom of our Jewish women today that is thousands of years old.  When you add all this up, you cannot help but feel that among the Pashtos, are people with Jewish genes.  They indeed have reason to hold the belief of coming from the Lost Tribes of Israel.

What is surprising to me is that they declare the tribe of Benjamin as their ancestors.  Benjamin was close to Judah on the maps.  When Judah broke off from Israel after King Solomon died, some of Benjamin and even some of Simeon were living with Judah as the southern kingdom of Judah.  So I did not realize that any of Benjamin would have been carted away, but it certainly could have happened.  After all, they most likely were helping their brothers fight off the Assyrians, and also again in 586 BCE when the Babylonians took over the Assyrian provinces and boldly attacked Judah again, that they would have gathered up Benjaminites.  "The Pashtuns take extreme care of their genealogical records, called shijra. For example, a number of medieval Persian texts document the Pathan tradition that they are descended from Kish or Qais, their ancient king, who was a contemporary of Mohammed and is claimed to be the 37th direct descendent of King Saul through Pison, Saul's great-grandson (as mentioned in I Chronicles 8:35).

Actor Saif Ali Khan of India has Pashtun heritage.
A genetic study of Pashtos has been hard to do, though those living in India have been more willing.  Pakistan and Afghanistan Pashtos felt that they KNEW who they were and their connection to King Saul and the Hebrews and didn't want to take a test.  Be that as it will, testing has been done.  "Now an Indian researcher has collected blood samples from members of the Afridi tribe of Pashtuns who today live in Malihabad, near Lucknow, in northern India. Shahnaz Ali, from the National Institute of Immunohaematology in Mumbai, is to spend several months studying her findings at Technion, the Israel Institute of Technology, in Haifa. A previous genetic study in the same area did not provide proof one way or the other.
The results are:
"The haplogroup R1a (Y-DNA) is found at a frequency of 51.02% among the Pashtun people. (A certain R1a line has been found in Levites.)

Paragroup Q-M242(xMEH2, xM378) (of Haplogroup Q-M242 (Y-DNA)) was found at 16.3% in Pashtuns.Haplogroup Q-M242 is also found at a frequency of 18% in Pashtuns in the Afghan capital of Kabul.

"The Pashtun are raised on stories of their origins as Children of Israel.   Specifically, children of Ephraim. (Ephraim being known as Afridi in Pashto.) And preliminary DNA testing has shown that the Pashtun tribe known specifically as Afridi do, in fact, share genetic markers with their Jewish neighbors, with nearly half of Afridis tested sharing markers found widely in the Jewish population."  "Additional testing showed that the genetic homology between the Pashtun and European Jews was nearly identical to the homology observed between  European Jewish DNA and that of Iraqi and Iranian Jews." Intriguingly, the rare genetic disease  inclusion body myopathy 2, a muscle-wasting syndrome, was known to occur only in Jews--specifically Iranian Jews. That is, until doctors identified the same unusual disorder in the Pashtuns in Afghanistan--an observation though to result from a "founder mutation effect", i.e., an original mutation in an ancestor common to all current cases.

My father, DNA Q242 -QBZ67 a Jewish haplogroup

This is very exciting to me as my father is also a Q, and has had the title of M242 upon our first testing.  Deeper testing now gives us the tag of QBZ67.  That's the result of 67 alleles and more STRs tested.  I knew of a few Q Haplogroup men that matched my brother's haplogroup test from Afghanistan.  One dropped me as a friend when he realized I was Jewish, so it will be hard to convince them that we are not terrible people.

Jewish Q's make up 5% of the Jewish population today.  This means that we share a common ancestor for sure!  Q's started  in northern and central Asia 15,000 to 20,000 years ago and migrated through northern Eurasia, coming to Ur in Iraq where Abraham was born.  Many Native North and South Americans are also connected along the line and have Q lineage.

R1a is most common in populations in India and central and western Asia.  It was thought to have originated in the Eurasian steppes north of the Black and Caspian seas in the Kurgan people, the first speakeers of the Indo-European language who lived in the region about 3,000 BCE and were known to domesticate the horse.

" Pakistani Jews and Afghan Jews have largely relocated to Israel and the United States."
The Pashtuns who believe they have a Jewish connection say:   "We are a group of Pashtuns who are dedicated to reafirming our blood/genetic roots with our jewish brothers in Israel and around the world. We are the lost Israelite tribe and seek to re-establish our historical links with the Jews of the world."  They can be contacted.  https://www.facebook.com/PashtunsLostTribe/about/.

Here's the conundrum to this miracle of all miracles.  Some would like to come and visit but probably not to convert back to Judaism and live since they are Muslims.   It is a miracle to have discovered them, though after all these years.    Israel already has about 20-25% Muslims and 75% Jews, and this ratio cannot be changed.  It is the only Jewish state in the world.  There are already 48 Muslim majority states  including Afghanistan with 28,395,716  people and Pakistan with 172,800,000 already.  Let's hope for another miracle and have some return to qualify for the mitzva of ingathering spoken of by our prophets.   The biggest miracle of all is if they came back wanting to be converted back to Judaism like the Anusim, people forced for convert to Christianity's Catholicism from the Spanish Inquisition.
