Customs: The Mezuzah Defending Our Home From the Meshuganas

 Nadene Goldfoot

There is the custom of having a Mezuzah attached to the doorpost of one's home which is used as another reminder of who lives here, under protection, and their customs.  It's a prayer on the door of a Jewish person, hopefully.

The origin of the mezuzah, a small box containing a scroll with prayers, lies in the biblical commandment to "write them on the doorposts of your house and upon your gates" (Deuteronomy 6:9). The mezuzah, literally meaning "doorpost," serves as a reminder of the Jewish covenant with God and a symbol of Jewish identity.

Usually, a rabbi is the one designated to put it on the doorpost for you,  When affixing a mezuzah, the right doorpost as you enter the room should be used, approximately shoulder height or slightly higher. The Ashkenazic custom is to angle the mezuzah with the top tilted inward, while Sephardic custom is to place it upright. The mezuzah should be firmly attached, with screws preferred for ease of removal later.

Deuteronomy 6:4-9 and 11:13-21, known as the Shema, is a core Jewish prayer emphasizing monotheism and the importance of remembering and obeying God's commandments.

In Deuteronomy 6:4, it states, "Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one." It then emphasizes love for God, instructing the people to keep the commandments in their hearts, teach them to their children, and bind them as signs on their hands and foreheads, writing them on their doorposts and gates.

Deuteronomy 11:13-21 further emphasizes obedience to these commandments, promising blessings for those who hearken to them and serving as a reminder that failing to obey will result in punishment and potential loss of the land.

Josh Shapiro's room for 2nd Seder now destroyed:  April 2025, not Germany 1935

In normal times, a Jewish person thinks about this:  You have now affixed the mezuzahs. Your home proudly displays its Jewish identity, and you've tapped into this unique spiritual connection. But today, with anti-Semitism running into our daily life, one might think twice about their protection.

The Governor of Pennsylvania, Josh Shapiro, experienced an anti-Semite attack on his home shortly after the 2nd Seder this year when he had many guests at his home for it.  They burned the inside of the large room that held the seder.  Luckily, no one was hurt.  The anti-Semite blamed him for Gaza since he was a Jew.  That was his reasoning this act, truly a sick person without any logic, but nevertheless, many people are thinking like him who seem to be normal otherwise.

Pennsylvania governor Shapiro quotes Priestly Blessing, emphasizes message of religious tolerance, but says New York senator’s demand for civil rights investigation ASAP isn’t ‘helpful’  He is against Schumer's call for a hate probe.

He also revealed that the family had found solace when a fire chaplain recited the Jewish Priestly Blessing for them.  “It’s a prayer we recite in Hebrew for our kids. It’s from the Book of Numbers: ‘The Lord bless thee and keep thee. The Lord make his face shine upon thee and be gracious unto thee. The Lord lift up his countenance upon thee and give thee peace.’ That’s a prayer and a hope that we have for our kids every day, that they have peace in their lives,” Shapiro said.    “Obviously, that peace was shattered on Sunday morning, but it is a hope and a prayer that we have, not just for our kids, but every child across Pennsylvania that they live in a society that’s free and peaceful where they are protected and they are watched over by God.”

But you're not finished yet. The mezuzah is a holy object that must be properly maintained.

At least twice in seven years, we take down our mezuzahs and have them professionally checked to ascertain that they are intact. The scribe examines the scrolls to ensure that no letters have been cracked or erased and that the mezuzah is still good. Our vigilance keeps our mezuzahs performing their function: bringing holiness, protection and merit to our home.

After a man tried to assassinate Donald Trump in July at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, the state’s Democratic governor, Josh Shapiro, quickly issued a statement condemning the attempt on the Republican presidential candidate’s life.“Violence targeted at any political party or political leader is absolutely unacceptable,” Shapiro posted on X that day. “It has no place in Pennsylvania or the United States. I have been briefed on the situation. @PAStatePolice are on the scene in Butler County and working with our federal and local partners.”

Yet three days after an arson attack on Shapiro’s residence in Harrisburg on Sunday, Trump still has not called Shapiro or weighed in significantly to condemn the violence.  The White House did not respond to a request for comment.

Do other people use G-d in protecting their homes?  Yes, many Catholics use God in protecting their homes through various practices, including prayer, displaying religious images, blessing the home, and using sacramentals like holy water. These practices are seen as ways to seek divine protection and create a holy environment. Praying for protection is a common practice, with many Catholics praying specific prayers for the home and its occupants. Sacramentals :Holy water, crosses, and statues of religious figures are used as tangible signs of faith and are believed to provide spiritual protection. Blessing the Home: Some Catholics have their homes blessed by a priest, while others may bless their own homes using prayers and holy water. Displays: Displaying religious images, like the Sacred Heart of Jesus or crosses, is seen as a way to invoke God's presence and protection.

Having a custom such as ours with the mezuzah just makes me feel good; not alone.

Meshuganas (crazy people) have always been with us since the beginning of time, so that is

why we need the extra protection from HaShem.(the name).  Practices such as customs arrive

in our culture when we have the need; and I think this one is here to stay, ever since Moses

said it, so is it written, almost in 1200 BCE, about 3,000 years ago.

Do You Think Israel's Counter-Terrorism Strategies Hold Humanitarian Standards ?

JERUSALEM — Israeli security forces captured two Palestinians on Sunday who were suspected of perpetrating an ax attack that killed three Israeli Jews in the central town of Elad on Thursday night. Their arrests ended an intensive search but left Israel’s fragile government grappling with how to combat the recent surge in terrorist attacks.  So even Israel has to review its methods to cover new terrorism plots.

Credit...Jaafar Ashtiyeh/Agence France-Presse — Getty Images  The police had distributed the names and photographs of the suspects on Thursday night, identifying them as Asad Al Refai, 19, and Subhi Abu Shakir, 20, both residents of the Palestinian village of Rumana, in the northern Jenin district of the occupied West Bank. The two suspects were captured unarmed on Sunday, officials said, as they hid in bushes in a woodland not far from Elad, a predominantly ultra-Orthodox town. The Israeli police, the military and the Shin Bet internal security agency announced the capture on Sunday morning, and the authorities, apparently seeking a victory image, promptly released photographs and video of the moment of the men’s arrests.

“Capturing the murderers is not enough,” Prime Minister Naftali Bennett of Israel said Sunday at the start of a weekly cabinet meeting, adding, “We are at the start of a new stage in the war on terrorism.”The search, involving hundreds of soldiers and police officers as well as helicopters and drones, had closed in on an area near a quarry, less than a mile from Elad.

Because Israel has had so many years to deal with terrorism, ever since the 1920s,  they have been forced to develop innovative counterterrorism strategies.  Israel is now respected as a global expert in the field, and its policies have become a model for other democracies that are also committed to upholding humanitarian standards even while they face terrorists who operate among civilians.

They have dealt with wars and terrorism since 2000 and sought ways to defend its citizens and, at the same time, protect the lives of innocent Palestinians and Lebanese who were also victimized by those who want to destroy Israel.  It must be remembered that their enemy holds no such feelings towards their own people and have often used them as chattel, weapons to use against Israel.

The guiding principles of Israel's policies are:

1. Humanitarian

     A. Save the lives of Israeli citizens

    B. Protect the lives and well-being of innocent Palestinians

    C. Uphold civil and human rights with Supreme Court review of contested policies

Israel chose not to use its full military power to eliminate the terrorists in order to limit the loss of innocent Palestinian lives.  One strategy was to try to block the terrorists' ability to access Israeli population center.  There are no natural barriers between Israel and the West Bank (Judea Samaria).

There were man-made barriers when Jordan occupied the West Bank, but Israel removed them when it gained control of the area in the 1967 War.  For the next 33 years people traveled more freely between the 2 regions.  However, this free movement ended when the terrorist campaign erupted in 2000.  Israel had to prevent terrorists from simply walking or driving into Israeli communities to maim and murder men, women and children.

2. Defensive

    A. Stop terrorists and dismantle their infrastructures

      1. Checkpoints:  are temporary legal and part of the Oslo Accords.  They inconvenience Palestinians and Israelis though Israel has progressively introduced improvements to ease the transit for Palestinians.

      a. Security checks within pre-'67 Israel: All Israelis and visitors must go through metal detectors and bag/body checks when they enter public places such as malls, bus stations, museums, clubs, cafes, hotels and religious sites.

      b. Border-Crossings;  have had 26 checkpoints between Israel and Territories in Sept. 2005.  Like border crossings between countries.

The fence, accommodating areas.  Fences go up when there is a need, and in this case, a case of life or death of Israelis.  If terrorism hadn't happened, there would be no fence.
Original wall around Jerusalem.  Many cities were walled back then.

      c. Security checkpoints within West Bank, control movement of terrorists, built around cities known to be terrorist centers like Nablus.  As the fence went up, Israel reduced the number of checkpoints from 25 to 12 and the roadblocks from 87 to 66.

  B. Prevent the success of terrorist missions

  C. Root out terrorist leaders and their supporters

Mossad-Intelligence Gathering:  is a defensive force.  Israel's most effective and important weapon is its intelligence operations, which allow it to monitor and preempt attacks against its citizens.

Update 8/5/22: The IDF remains on high alert along the Gaza border and has redeployed reinforcements and called up reserves to the area. The IDF continues to maintain road closures in the border area. This comes after security forces arrested an Islamic Jihad commander, al Saadi, earlier this week in Jenin. The IDF says that it has intelligence that the Islamic Jihad terror group in Gaza is planning attacks on Israeli targets in the border area.

According to a report in the Palestinian al Quds news paper in Jerusalem, Islamist Jihad told Egyptian moderators that they demand to see proof that al Saadi was unharmed by his Israeli captors as well as a resolution of the 144 day hunger strike of another member of the Islamic Jihad held in prison in Israel. The terror group also said that they were not interested in a violent conflict but reserved the right to respond to the "the crimes perpetrated by the enemy occupiers."   This, coming from the people who beheaded Daniel Pearl.

Coronavirus Pandemic : Difference From other Killer Diseases --Update June 30, 2020

Nadene Goldfoot
April or May 2020 and here I am after making my own
mask to wear from directions seen on TV.  It doesn't stay
on my ears.  I need to use my pharmacy-bought  one from 2 years ago when
we had forest fires with smoke coming into our city.  I've had asthma,
so needed to stay indoors then, too.   Luckily, I had kept the box of
masks.

We've lived through the first pandemic flu virus of 1918, an outgrowth of WWI.
People then went through very similar things that we are today.  You'd think we'd learn to prevent such a thing but that's not the case.  Ours today started we believe, in China without a war yet came here.  Today we have air travel that didn't exist in 1918.  Yet we have vaccines that didn't exist then, either.  One has to be created to fight this virus, and doctors are working on it still. One thing they learned is that so many of the cases died of pneumonia, as this hit the lungs the most.

A pandemic is caused by a contagious disease like the flu that becomes out of hand.  It hits the whole world.  This particular flu is scary because it harms the whole body of those it comes in contact with.  All the organs will be permanently affected.  Autopsies show that the lungs show signs of it even in those people who were carriers but hadn't shown signs of having the virus.  Other killer diseases are horrible but not like this one.  This one hops from person to person like a magnet with the speed of lightening.  Groups have been attacked like in churches where people were close together, and high numbers show all were victimized.

Older people with immune systems that were damaged have been the first to die of this disease which came to our attention in March of 2020.  I'm in this group and certainly want to live through it so am following all the rules.  Luckily I have a son who is a retired RN who has constantly harped about what to do and why I need to stay home and out of harm's way.

The contagion caused our schools to close, jobs to freeze, life came to a halt.  We're still in that phase of improving and crashing again.  All are to wear masks by the decision of our governor so as to not spread the disease even if we think we're well, for younger people have been catching it.  Many people feeling great may be carriers and are the ones spreading the disease.  If you can't wear a mask because of physical reasons, please stay home and let someone else do your bidding.  Don't frighten people with a bare face.

Today, with our advanced science where we know so much more than people from WWI 1914-1918 in that flu pandemic, and so realize all the more why this flu is so much more dangerous and how easily it spreads.  We hope that our scientists will create a vaccine against it soon, but in the meantime we have to follow all these preventative measures;  stay home, wear a mask in public, and wear rubber gloves when touching anything, too, like doors of buildings or in supermarkets.

We thought heat would kill the virus.  The problem with that is that it's the worst in our southern states.  Florida and Texas have been hard hit.

Since I'm Jewish Bubba, I must say something about that.  In the Middle Ages, diseases spread and the Jews, who lived by their Mosaic laws, were not catching diseases like the rest of the non-Jewish population due to this as they were required to visit a mikvah once a month; yes, even men would go too, but not for the menses, of course;   where they immersed in water, where they washed their hands before eating, right after rising in the morning; where they didn't eat certain meats such as that from a pig;  and no insects, etc following the laws of Kashrut as they are called.  The population would turn on them and do harm to them for not coming down with illnesses.

Our populations have reached a critical mass where disease spreads so easily.  We are witnessing a change in our lives that no other times has experienced like the seriousness of of this era.  We are adjusting quickly.  Life has been doing that since the beginning, and if it hadn't, we wouldn't be here now.  That's why homo-sapiens still rule on this planet.  Where Neanderthal died out, we're still here and will use our intelligence to overcome viruses.

Other disease have killed more people, to be sure, but they were in contained areas, or could be contained, at least.  This one is far more allusive.  It's not a bacteria, it's a virus and reacts differently.

In Gresham, a married couple fighting the illness was asked to self quarantine after both made 3 trips to the ER.  They're asking their community to take COVID-19 seriously.
