CNN's Presentation of Jerusalem, City of Faith and Fury Part 5 Independence and Defeat

 Nadene Goldfoot

Hussein ibn Ali, King of Saudi Arabia, father of Abdullah, who wanted Transjordan and got it.

The presentation started off with the history of this period from the viewpoint of the Arabs.  I was able to see how much they omitted that were important elements to the history.  Of course i felt it was all one-sided.  One thing CNN had correct was how both the Arabs and the Jews viewed Britain's part; all for Britain.  How they saw it was different from the Jewish point of view.  Britain played both the Arabs and the Jews, making promises to both.

The fact that bothers me and was not brought out was that the Jerusalem and this part of Palestine had once been the Jewish nation over 3,000 years ago, lost to them in 70 CE with Jews yearning and praying 3 times a day for a return.  What they needed were leaders to pull it off, which finally took place in 1918.    It was part and parcel to their religion of following the laws of Moses who told them that G-d said they were to live in this land.  None of the following was mentioned.

The Palestinians had no great reason other than in 632 Mohammad had said that he flew to Jerusalem on his special flying horse and back. It was the Ottoman Turks who held the land for 400 years up to WWI, not the Arabs.  At the time, it was both Jews and Arabs, Arabs who had 4 wives if they wanted, with plenty of children, who managed to live there.

I disagree with the population figures given, flatly saying the Arabs were far greater in numbers than the Jews.  According to the Romans in 70 CE, Jews who managed to be alive were not allowed to ever return, though some remained where they were not found, but the numbers were small, indeed.   We remember entering Canaan with Moses with 601,730, having lost 1,820 after the 40 year Exodus from Egypt.

The Arabs had the chance to create a state when the Ottomans were there and afterwards, but it was the Jews who were frantic to gain their ancient land back and had been talking to the British since WWI had developed, hoping and expecting them to win and gain back their land which was an integral part of the war.  The Ottomans were on the wrong side;  the German side of the war.  Jews had waited 2,000 years for this chance.  Jews fought on the Allied side.   One had created an element for ammunition that made it superior, helping to win the war for the British and that was Chaim Weizmann.

In 1914, there were 94,000 Jews to  595,000 Non-Jews with 13.67% Jews.  Groups of Jews had been migrating to Palestine since 1881 called Aliyahs, with 5 in all.  They were breaking ground there, pioneers.

In 1918, there were 60,000 Jews to 600,000 Non-Jews with 8.1% Jews;  Pogroms were going on in Russia, killing Jews, making life unbearable.  Zionism and plans to return were happening.

By 1931 there were 174,610 Jews to 861,211 Non-Jews with 16.9% Jews.

By 1939 there were 449,000 Jews.  Jews were going through terrible times in Germany, elsewhere.  Arabs were being allowed to enter Palestine while Jews were kept out by British.

By 1947 there were 630,000 Jews to 1,324 Non-Jews with 32.0% Jews

By 1948 there were 716,700 Jews to 156,000 Non-Jews with 82.1% Jews.

What was mentioned was that in 1948, the Arabs wanted to push the Jews into the sea, and that was true.  Abdullah of Saudi Arabia was then brought into the story as a major player.

It was said that Abdulla took the West Bank.  My understanding was that the British gave him 80% of the Jewish Homeland.  He wanted this West Bank, the original Judea and Samaria, when he asked for it, and that was done against the understanding given to the Jews originally.  This happened because of who he was, son of the leader of Saudi Arabia and that he wanted land.  He brought a few of his people with him to rule over.  Britain was planning to have the land or be involved themselves.

David ben Gurion then was brought into the story.  He was a major Zionist whose visions for the land was that it would be a light unto the nations as mentioned that the Jews were to be that in the bible.

Golda, on May 14, 1948 announcing the birth of their nation, Israel.  5 minutes later they were attacked again.

Golda Meir was then mentioned, the future 1st woman prime minister.  The War of Independence was talked about, not mentioning that it started on 29 November 1947 when the Arabs responded to the UN idea of  partitioning the land into 3 parts; one for Arabs, one for Jews, and one for Jerusalem.  The Arabs refused, Jews accepted, and the war was on.  Both felt tricked but Jews were desperate for that chance of even a little teeny piece of the land at this point.  The war lasted until the signing of the armistice Agreements in 1949.

If I were watching this presentation and had no prior knowledge, I might think that Jews somehow, a small group, didn't deserve the land, even though the original section in reality was a very small piece.  Jews have been painted as undeserving and the Arabs, the good guys, cheated out of the land they had been living on by both the Jews and the British.  It never was discussed that the majority of Arabs had come into the land at the same time as the Jews had made aliyah in 1880-81 looking for work from all over the Middle East.  They were Arabs, but not a people; coming from all sorts of countries.  Jews had been a scattered people,  a people sharing their religion, language, foods, etc.;   finding they were even related to each other up to 5th cousins and more.  They were coming together as prophesized in the Bible, surprisingly.  Both Jews and Arabs had been living in the land since 70 CE, even the Arabs who may have come in later when Rome was gone.

Jews were kept out of Palestine by the British who allowed Arabs to enter at the same time.

In the late 30s, Jews were frantic to enter their promised Homeland, so had to be smuggled in by Haganah.  David ben Gurion felt even more determined to help the land become their country.

The Irgun Tzevaileumi (National Military Organization) aka Etzel, a Jewish Palestinian underground organization was created.  It's aim was retaliation against Arab attacks on Jews, but on the publication of the 1939 White Paper, it's target became the British authorities in Palestine, by attacking administrative personnel and executing acts of sabotage.  They were outlawed by the mandatory government of the British.

Stanley Goldfoot, my 3rd cousin, wife and daughters at Tel Aviv Beach, unknown to my family, found through genealogy and DNA research;  was able to meet him in Jerusalem in 1981

                                           Avraham Stern b: 1907 d: 1942 at age 35

Not mentioned was that an outgrowth of that was the Stern Group (Lohame Herut Israel) , of which my 3rd cousin, Stanley Goldfoot, was the Chief of Intelligence.  Abraham Stern was the leader who had left the Irgun Tzevai Leumi of which he had been a leader because of its refusal to continue anti-British activities in Palestine during world War II.  They were known by the British as the Stern Gang which carried out acts of sabotage, etc.  Stern was killed by the British police while being arrested.  Born in 1907, he would have been my father's age.  He died in 1942.  The Stern Group planned the attack on the King David Hotel in Jerusalem, but it was the leader, Stern, who planned that job. They told that 91 were killed in the explosion on the hotel.  They didn't mention that the Stern group warned the hotel of what they were doing and told them to get everyone out.  Evidently they didn't believe the phone call.   I had the opportunity to meet my cousin in 1981 at the very same King David Hotel, and talk to him about his experiences.  Stanley was a writer, who wrote the famous Letter to the World, telling how he felt about the land and Jerusalem.  Stanley corrected me, saying it wasn't the Stern Gang but the Stern Group!

Arabs went through the defeat.  They saw Jews as a machine taking over the land.  Golda had gone to the USA and Jews had donated money for arms to help the Jews win the battle.  Israel was born after the British left their 30 year term on May 14, 1948.  Arabs felt that Great Britain had betrayed the Palestinian Arab ambitions.  I reiterate; their ambitions only developed when they saw that Jews were returning and were buying up the land from Arabs who were tired of paying high taxes for the land to the Ottomans.  They had no ambitions before that.

Jordan's Arab Legion took control of territory on the western side of the Jordan River, including the cities of Jericho, Bethlehem, Hebron, Nablus and eastern Jerusalem, including the Old City. Following the end of hostilities, the area that remained under Jordanian control became known as the West Bank. The program had only mentioned Jerusalem.

They did mention that Golda had disguised herself as an Arab woman to meet with Abdullah in Jordan to talk over the situation.  He, however, was one of the first to attack Israel as he wanted Jerusalem for himself.  She had asked him not to attack.  Abdullah took over Jerusalem and Jews were evacuated out.  They were prisoners of war.

As an aside, a wonderful movie was made of this period in 1966, called CAST A GIANT SHADOW, with Kirk Douglas, Senta Berger, Frank Sinatra, Yul Brynner, Angie Dickinson, that tells more about the War of Independence. The film is a fictionalized account of the experiences of a real-life Jewish-American military officer, Colonel David "Mickey" Marcus, who commanded units of the fledgling Israel Defense Forces during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War.

For the Arabs, they remember Israel's birth as a disaster while we celebrate its birthday.

The 1967 war was mentioned.  That was the end.  One more presentation coming up next week.

What The Connection With Palestine Is To the Arabs

Nadene Goldfoot

The homeland of the Arabs is Arabia which is the SW peninsula of Asia.  It's an area 11,027,000 square miles (2,630,000 square km) in size.  Compare that to Israel with 8,000 square miles.  This includes not only Saudi Arabia, but Yemen, Kuwait, Bahrein, Qatar, Trucial Oman on the Persian Gulf, Muscat and Oman, and S. Yemen.  Why did they ever leave this homeland?

In the 7th century, Islam was born with Mohammad (570-632) , and they were left with the command to conquer others with their religion in a true conquering fashion, not just to be evangelicals.  They established an empire covering 3 continents, from the Atlantic Ocean to the border of China.  During this time they conquered Palestine from the Byzantine Empire.

Arab rule took place from Damascus, Syria by the Omayyad dynasty which lasted about a century.  They were overthrown in 750 by the Abbasids, their bitter antagonists who governed for 2 centuries, dominated by the Persians (today's Iran), and then by the Turks.  The Abbasids were defeated by the Fatimids of Egypt and Syria, and then they had no part in the government of the empire.

Arabic became the dominant language and Islam became the predominant religion.  Social and economic discrimination was suffered by non-Moslems, so they may have converted for these reasons.  This brought about the Golden Age of Arabic culture.

As for culture otherwise,  Philip K. Hitti, PhD,  born in c1860s, Lebanese-American Maronite Christian Scholar and Arab historian, stated that they brought no tradition of learning, no heritage of culture to the lands they conquered.  They were learning from the people they had conquered.  What they contributed to society was language and religion.  Most great works in mathematics, astronomy, medicine and philosophy were translated into Arabic and so saved this way for Europe to learn about.  This translation period was followed up by original works in Arabic on all these subjects as well as on alchemy, pharmacy and geography.  However, these discoveries were by people speaking Arabic, not necessarily just the Arabs themselves.  They were by the Persians, Egyptians or Arabians, Christian, Jewish or Moslem.  I know of Jews of the period passed off as Arab writers by the Arab historians.  " He asserted that Zionism was an imposition on the Arabs of an alien way of life which they resented and to which they would never submit."  The Arabs that make up 1.7 million of Israelis today seem to be doing all right considering it is so hard on them.

I believe that Bedouins still are able to live as Bedouins if they wish on the desert in tents and have their horses and camels.

Palestine was simply a backwater of the great empire.  No political or cultural center ever was from there.  Damascus, Baghdad, Cairo were the centers of the Moslem empire.  Jerusalem, where a Moslem Holy Place was established on top of the ancient Jewish Temple site, never achieved any political or even cultural status until now since Israel has been created in 1948.  Jewish American children have been sending their pennies to Palestine and then to Israel to plant trees and bring back the earth to life there.

Raiding Bedouins
The Arabs and their non-Arab successors saw Palestine as a battleground, a corridor, an outpost.  Their people saw it as a source of taxes and some manpower for waging endless foreign and internecine wars.

First Crusaders, 1097
The Arab culture did not grow.  Immigrants from Arabia were encouraged to emigrate in the early Arab period and were given Jewish lands of Israel and Judah.  However, the population remained a mixture of people.  When the Crusaders came to Palestine after 460 years of Arab and non Arabic Moslem rule, they found Arabic-speakers made up of a dozen races apart from Jews and Druzes. Arab children sprouting red hair probably got it from Crusaders.

Christians in Jerusalem

They were practicing 5 kinds of Islam and 8 or 9 kinds of Christianity and of course the Jews practiced Judaism.
As the Umayyad empire passed, Arabian-ism fell but Islam continued.  Persians, Turks from Abbasid empire, Berbers and Egyptians of Fatimid empire had no interest in Palestine except for what they could take out of it for their armies or vaults of their empires. Their heads were thinking of finances; money.

After the Crusaders came the Mamluks in 1250.  Palestine was divided up to administer, just part of a conquered empire.  The people living there were exploited.  Some Arabs lived in tribal groups and collaborated with the Mamluks.  Arabs had no part of influence in the region, just being conquered subjects and were treated as such.

Jew of Ottoman Empire
Then the Ottoman Turks came along and the people of Palestine were treated no better. and had no privileges or share in government.  The Ottomans replaced Arabic with Turkish as the language of the land.  The Arabs were definitely not happy with the Turkish rulers.  Both Jews and Arabs were heavily taxed.

What the Arabs contributed now was devastation to the land of Palestine.  Warring people going through also did their share of devastating the land; the Arabs, Turks, Persians, Egyptians, Crusaders, and then the hordes of Mongols or Kharezmians, revolts of local chieftains, by civil strife, inter tribal warfare among the people.   Arabs and Bedouins would hold raids from the neighboring deserts-people seeking economic gain like pirates, where happenings in the Byzantine era.  Over 15 centuries of such people, they eroded the face of Palestine.  Read Mark Twain's "The Innocents Abroad" about his trip to the Middle East in 1867 and what Twain saw that had happened to Palestine; nothing but weeds, sand mosquitoes, and raiding Bedouins.
Transjordan became blighted and run down with the Abbasids and Fatimid era when Bedouin desecration of the land became more intense.  It was then that the land was laid wasted.

The Mamluks in the 13th century did quite a number on the land. It was even more so under the Ottoman's misrule.  Bedouin raiders would plunder livestock and destroy crops and plantations, plagued the farmer's life, and had Bedouin encampments dotting the countryside that served as bases for highway robbers on travelers, on caravans carrying merchandise, and on pilgrim cavalcades.

Count Volney in 1785, a French scholar who had also visited Egypt,  describes the Palestinian countryside and told of the Turks' negligence to keep order with them, saying that Palestine was more frequently plundered than any other in Syria because it just lied open to the Arabs.

Edward Robinson, archaeologist,  in 1838 found that hundreds of place names of villages and sites, seemingly Arab, were Arabic renditions or translations of ancient Hebrew names, biblical or Talmudic.  They called the country "Filastin" which is just the Arab transliteration of "Palestine," the name the Romans gave the country when they decided to obliterate the "presence" of the Jewish people after Bar Kokhba, the Jewish General had taken back Jerusalem for 3 years and had held off the greatest army of that day-the Romans for so long.  This Aluf of the Jews died in 135.

Jewish pioneers in 1880s cleaning out swamps from Eretz Yisrael
Sir George Adam Smith, author of "Historical Geography of the Holy Land,"  wrote that the principle of nationality requires the Turks' dispossession.  there is no indigenous civilization in Palestine that could take the place of the Turks except that of the Jews.  The Jews have given to Palestine everything it has ever had of value to the world.  This shows that Arabs did not discover Palestine until long after the Jews had been there for ever so long.

There were some Arabs living in Palestine in the 1880's when the 5 Aliyahs happened and because of Europeans coming into the land building, they attracted neighboring Arabs to arrive looking for work in building.   The Brits did nothing to stop them from coming after WWI,  while they did the Jews, and supposedly the Brits were there to help the Jews create their Jewish Homeland.  Arabs came in illegally, looking for opportunity.

The Arabs and the Druzes are Israel's largest minority groups.  At the beginning of 1972, minorities in Israel numbered 458,500, not including the population of the administered areas.

Almost half lived in about 100 villages and 2/5s in the towns which included 73,000 in Jerusalem.  The rest, about 44,000, were semi-nomadic Beduin.  Some 75% are Moslems, 17% Christians, and 8% Druzes and others.

The Arab community has grown very fast since the end of the fighting in 1949 when about 140,000 were left in Israeli territory.  They grew by natural increase and re-admission of thousands who had fled when the Arab States attacked Israel. Naturally, since there is no peace between Israel and her Arab neighbors except with Jordan and Egypt now, Israeli Arabs are sometimes torn between their loyalty to Israel and their Arab kinship.  There is, however, a growing pattern of co-existence between the Jews and Arabs of Israel.

Members of the Arab community are exempt from military service to avoid any conflict of conscience.  Compulsory military service is applied to the Druze and Circassian communities at their own demand.  Everyone can only have one Israeli wife at a time.   "However, polygamy is still practiced in the Bedouin community, where about 25% of men are believed to have more than one wife." Sharia courts in Israel deal with personal status issues in the Muslim community.

One issue is unique and not found in the USA.  "About 1.6 million Arabs are Israeli citizens. About 4.4 million Palestinians live in the West Bank and Gaza. They are linked by ethnic and family ties, but the lines between Israel and Palestinian areas divide them.
There are no official statistics, but thousands of Palestinians are believed to be living illegally with their Israeli Arab spouses inside Israel, threatened with deportation.  This gives Israel an extra problem if there arises any rioting from the Palestinian spouses or both.  One hopes the Palestinian spouse is a female, but this is not known.

Bible Predictions from Judah the Pious of Germany Coming True: 2017 End of 10th Jubilee Year

Nadene Goldfoot

So we don't want to hear about anything biblical?  It's old fashioned? How about Prophets who made predictions?    This should shake us all up.

A 13th century German rabbi from Regensburg wrote many books in German.  He was Judah Ben Samuel, AKA Judah he-Hasid (Judah the Pious) and he has made some astonishing and specific predictions about the future of Israel that have come true already. He made a prophecy 750 years before it has happened  So far it has been fullfilled to the letter.  This rabbi died in 1217 and was a mystic.  He devoted himself chiefly to kabbalistic studies.

The Christian Crusades occurred from 1096 to 1270.  From this period a correspondence developed between Jews in the Holy Land and the Christian West.  The rabbis in Worms and Regensburg, Germany had heard that Saladin's Ayyubids had been ruling in the Holy land since 1187.

Judah Ben Samuel was a student of Gematria and astrological observations and made this prediction:  He was often called "the light of Israel."  Bishops came to him for advice.  Here it is.

1.  When the Ottomans (Turks) who were already a power to be reckoned with on the Bosporus-conquered Jerusalem,  they will rule over Jerusalem for 8 jubilees. (50 years=1 jubilee)  50 x 8 = 400.
2.  Afterwards Jerusalem will become a no-man's land for one jubilee.1917 + 50=1967.
3.  In the 9th jubilee it will once again come back into the possession of the Jewish nation which would signify the beginning of the Messianic end time.  1967=Messianic End Times began=end 2017.

This happened! The Mamluks had been in Jerusalem since 1250 but were conquered in 1517 by the Ottoman Turks.   The Ottomans were in Jerusalem for 400 years.  In 1917, the Turks were conquered by the British.  The League of Nations conferred the mandate for the Holy Land and Jerusalem to the British. From 1917 under international law, Jerusalem was no-man's land.  It was not until the Six Day War in 1967 when the entire Judea and Samaria of the Holy Land was conquered by the Israeli army that the whole city of Jerusalem passed back into the possession of Israel.  The prophecy made by the rabbi 750 years before will fulfilled to the letter.  1917 and 1967 were Jubilee years.  The 10th Jubilee began in 1967 and will end in 2017.

Referencing Judah the Pious was Rabbi Isaac Ben Solomon Luria, a mystic from Safed who dealt with the messianic world and lived in Jerusalem and Safed from 1531 to 1572, and others.

He was asked about where he received his wisdom, and he said that it came from the prophet Elijah, who will precede the Messiah, and he had appeared to him and revealed many things and emphasized that the precondition for answered prayer is that it is fueled by enthusiasm and joy for the greatness and holiness of G-d.

Rabbi Judah Ben Samuel's chief work is the Sepher Hasidim or Book of Saints.  It's one of the major medieval Hebrew ethical works.  It's a compilation based on the writings of Judah, his pupil Eleazar of Worms who was the author of the Rokeah, and his father Samuel.  Judah also edited the itinerary of Pethahiah of Regensburg.
