Searching For Bene Israel's Entrance Into Afghanistan's Land from Assyrians in 721 BCE: 2,740 years Ago

Nadene Goldfoot
Afghanistan Shah Shujah Durrani Sadozai -Reigned in 1800
The Assyrians, led by Sennacherib,  attacked Northern Israel's 10 Tribes of Israel and took them away to far distant eastern lands of theirs in 721 BCE 2,740 years ago.   The virtual destruction of Israel left the southern kingdom, Judah, to fend for itself among warring Near Eastern kingdoms.

Assyrians
Eventually some of the 10 tribes  arrived in what is today's Afghanistan and Pakistan.  They were not heard of again after the attack. To  the two remaining tribes, Judah and some of Benjamin who were left behind,  they were lost forever, even possibly presumed dead.  Now, with modern science, we find that many are alive and known to the world as the Pashtuns of Afghanistan, Pakistan and parts of India.  They have maintained their own culture, language, and have staked out their own major piece of land among these countries.

We know the history of the southern tribes who continued to live in Judah until they, too were taken away, this time by the next group, the Babylonians, led by Nebuchadnezzer, who were the conquerors of the Assyrians who attacked Judah in 597 BCE and again in 586 BCE.  Jews were kept in Babylonia but some started to return in 538 BCE with permission from their king.  That means that at the least, they had been captives for 48 years, which is about 2 generations in length.

Jews returning from Babylon going home to Jerusalem.

They came back finding that Babylonians had filled in their spaces with foreigners living in their land.  That was the way of those days; people were kidnapped, taken away only to be replaced by that country's unwanted and troublesome people.  Killings happened on the battlefield, but people were like machines.  They could be forced to work and do things for you that you didn't want to do.  The kidnapped were sort of like that year's model washing machine.  They were valuable.

Afghani nomads living today as they may have 3,000 years ago in tents.
What would our sons of Jacob come across in the Afghanistan land?   It probably took them several years to make their way from Israel to Afghanistan.
From Jerusalem to Kabul is 1,965 miles or 3,262.36 km.  Kabul is 2 hours 30 minutes ahead of Jerusalem in time.  If they traveled by camel almost 3,000 years ago it would have taken years to get to Kabul, I would think.  They would have traveled on the SILK ROAD, possibly trading all along the way.

"The Indus Valley Civilization (IVC) was a Bronze Age civilization (3300-1300 BCE; mature period 2600–1900 BCE) extending from present-day northwest Pakistan to present-day northwest India and present-day northeast Afghanistan.  An Indus Valley site has been found on the Oxus River at Shortugai in northern Afghanistan.   Apart from Shortughai, Mundigak is another known site.   There are several other smaller IVC sites to be found in Afghanistan as well."

"The Bactria-Margiana Archaeological Complex became prominent in the southwest region between 2200 and 1700 BCE (approximately). The city of Balkh (Bactra) was founded about this time (c. 2000–1500 BCE). It is possible that the BMAC may have been an Indo-European culture, perhaps the Proto-Indo-Aryans. But the standard model holds the arrival of Indo-Aryans to have been in the Late Harappan which gave rise to the Vedic civilization of the Early Iron Age."

"Assyria (/əˈsɪəriə/), also called the Assyrian Empire, was a Mesopotamian kingdom and empire of the ancient Near East and the Levant. It existed as a state from perhaps as early as the 25th century BC in the form of the Assur city-state, until its collapse between 612 BCE and 609 BCE, spanning the Early to Middle Bronze Age through to the late Iron Age."

Cyrus of Persia
" The region of nowadays Afghanistan came under Median rule for a short time." The Medes, sons of Japheth, son of Noah of the Bible, cooperated with the Babylonians in the 6th century BCE but were defeated by Cyrus of Persia.  Their country was called Media.  Japheth was promised wide territories in his father's blessing.  he was the father of 14 different people, people of the Indo-European language group, living from the Caucasus to the Aegean Sea.

It was Cyrus II, King of Persia who died in 529 BCE who overran the Babylonian Empire which included Eretz Yisrael (Israel).  It was he who in 538 BCE allowed the Jews to return to Jerusalem and rebuild the Temple.  Read in (Ezra 1:1-44; and (II Chronicles 36:22-23 about it of the Bible).  The Jewish exiles thought  that he was wonderful, a Divine agent.

Afghanistan fell to the Achaemenid Empire after it was conquered by Darius I of Persia. This Darius reigned from 522-486 BCE and had inherited the throne of Cyrus.  At the beginning of his reign, he permitted Zerubbabel and the Jews who had returned to Jerusalem to work on the reconstruction of the Temple of Solomon, creating the 2nd Temple of Solomon.  It's also thought that Cyrus could have been King Ahasueros and Darius, the son, actually a Jew.  He would have had Queen Esther as his mother.  The thought is that they were so nice and thoughtful to the Jews, that maybe they were related and were Esther's family.  Esther was well known to the Jews of the Persian Empire.

Note that Cyrus and Darius played most important parts in the lives of Jews in Judah as well as here in Afghanistan though neither knew of the other.

Alexander the Great arrived in the area of Afghanistan in 330 BCE after defeating Darius III of Persia a year earlier at the Battle of Gaugamela. The Pashtuns "  probably mixed with other peoples, including possibly the Kushans, the Hephthalites or White Huns, Arabs, Mughals, and others who passed through the area. Specifically, Pashtuns in the Kandahar region have a tradition that they are descended from the Greco-Macedonian troops of Alexander the Great, who invaded the area in 330 BCE.

Alexander's  army faced very strong resistance in the Afghan tribal areas where he is said to have commented that Afghanistan is "easy to march into, hard to march out of. Although his expedition through Afghanistan was brief, Alexander left behind a Hellenic cultural influence that lasted several centuries. Several great cities were built in the region named "Alexandria," including: Alexandria-of-the-Arians (modern-day Herat); Alexandria-on-the-Tarnak (near Kandahar); Alexandria-ad-Caucasum (near Begram, at Bordj-i-Abdullah); and finally, Alexandria-Eschate (near Kojend), in the north. After Alexander's death, his loosely connected empire was divided. Seleucus, a Macedonian officer during Alexander's campaign, declared himself ruler of his own Seleucid Empire, encompassing Persia and Afghanistan."

Alexander was also the king of Macedonia from 336-323 BCE.  He was also liked very much by the Jews.  He visited Jerusalem and was kind to the high priest (a Cohen) who was Jaddua, and gave privileges to the Jews of Judah and Jews outside the land as well.  This was reported by Josephus, and really not believed.  People thought he never did visit Jerusalem. Nevertheless, there were many Jews named "Alexander," both 1st and last names, so he must have carried on the tradition of being nice to Jews when their suppressor.

The area was divided into several provinces including:   Aria (Herat); Arachosia (Kandahar, Lashkar Gah, and Quetta); Bactriana (Balkh); Sattagydia (Ghazni); and Gandhara (Kabul, Jalalabad, Peshawar)

The Greco-Bactrian Kingdom was founded when Diodotus I, the satrap of Bactria (and probably the surrounding provinces) seceded from the Seleucid Empire around 250 BCE. Greco-Bactria continued until c. 130 BCE, when Eucratides' son, King Heliocles I, was defeated and driven out of Bactria by the Yuezhi tribes. It is thought that his dynasty continued to rule in Kabul and Alexandria of the Caucasus until 70 BCE when King Hermaeus was defeated by the Yuezhi.
One of Demetrius' successors, Menander I, brought the Indo-Greek Kingdom to its height between 165–130 BCE, expanding the kingdom in Afghanistan and Pakistan to even larger proportions than Demetrius. After Menander's death, the Indo-Greeks steadily declined and the last Indo-Greek king was defeated in c. 10 CE."
"The territory fell to the Mauryan Empire, which was led by Chandragupta Maurya. The Mauryas introduced Hinduism and Buddhism to the region, and were planning to capture more territory of Central Asia until they faced local Greco-Bactrian forces. Seleucus is said to have reached a peace treaty with Chandragupta by giving control of the territory south of the Hindu Kush to the Mauryas upon intermarriage and 500 elephants."
For a period, the land belonged to the Sassanids;   much of modern-day Afghanistan was part of the Persian Sasanian Empire, since Shapur I extended his authority eastwards into Afghanistan and the previously autonomous Kushanswere obliged to accept his suzerainty."

In 642 CE, Rashidun Arabs had conquered most of West Asia from the Sassanids and Byzantines, and from the western city of Herat they introduced the religion of Islam as they entered new cities. Afghanistan at that period had a number of different independent rulers, depending on the area. Ancestors of Abū Ḥanīfa, including his father, were from the Kabul region.
The early Arab forces did not fully explore Afghanistan due to attacks by the mountain tribes. Much of the eastern parts of the country remained independent, as part of the Hindu Shahi kingdoms of Kabul and Gandhara, which lasted that way until the forces of the Muslim Saffarid dynasty followed by the Ghaznavids conquered them

OTTOMAN EMPIRE OF TURKEY 1515-1917:  400 years to be lost by Turkey because they sided with the Axis Power-Germany-in World War I.  Their land was divided up by the Allies who won.

Dost Mohammad Khan (Pashto: دوست محمد خان‎, December 23, 1793 – June 9, 1863) was the founder of the Barakzai dynasty and one of the prominent rulers of Afghanistan during the First Anglo-Afghan War. With the decline of the Durrani dynasty, he became Emir of Afghanistan from 1826 to 1839 and then from 1843 to 1863. An ethnic Pashtun, he was the 11th son of Sardar Payendah Khan (chief of the Barakzai tribe) who was killed in 1799 by Zaman Shah Durrani. Dost Mohammad's grandfather was Hajji Jamal Khan.
The Musahiban family started with his older brother, Sultan Muhammad Khan, nicknamed "Telai", meaning "golden", a nickname he was given because of his love of fine clothing. This brother was the ruler of Peshawar.

Bārakzai (Pashto: بارکزی‎, bārakzay, plur. bārakzī) is the name of a Pashtun tribe from present-day, Kandahar, Afghanistan. '"Barakzai" is a common name among the Pashtuns and it means "son of Barak" in Pashto. There are seven distinct Pashtun tribes named Barakzai, with the Zirak branch of the Durrani tribe being the most important and largest tribe with over 4 million people.

1st king of Afghanistan, Amanullah Khan 1919-1929
His brother was Inayatullah Khan who ruled for 3 days before the rebellion.
Inayatullah had taken over when Amanullah Khan abdicated.
Afghanistan became a constitutional monarchy in 1926, and had been the Emirate of Afghanistan  It's 1st king was Amanullah Khan.  This honor came after he had been on the throne already for 7 years.  "He was the first Afghan ruler who attempted to modernize Afghanistan on Western designs. However, he did not succeed in this because of a popular uprising by Habibullah Kalakani and his followers.

King Mohammed Nadir Shah, father of
the last King of Afghanistan, Mohammed Zahir Shah.
He would be descended from Kish of the Tribe of Benjamin
from Israel's 12 Lost Tribes.
Born Mohammad Nadir Khan
April 9, 1883-November 8, 1933.
Amanullah Khan had a Minister of War, Mohammed Nadir.  He returned from India and his British-supported armies sacked Kabul.  This forced Habibullah Kalakani, the leader of the tribal rebellion who had taken power and had reinstated the Emirate,   to ask for a truce.

On 14 January 1929, Amanullah abdicated and fled to neighbouring British India whilst the country went into a short civil war. From British India, he went to Europe where he died in Zürich, Switzerland, in 1960."

Mohammed Nadir executed Kalakani, reinstated the kingdom, and was proclaimed King of Afghanistan on October 1929 and went onto revert the reformist path of Amanullah Khan.

SON;  LAST KING OF AFGHANISTAN
MOHAMMED ZAHIR SHAH

His son succeeded him who was Mohammed Zahir Shah who ruled from 1929 to 1933.  His rule started in 1933 and lasted for 39 years.  Under him, the Afghan government sought relationships with the Soviet Union, France, United Kingdom and the United States.  On September 27, 1934, the Kingdom of Afghanistan joined THE LEAGUE OF NATIONS.  It was Zahir Shah who descended from Kish of the Tribe of Benjamin, one of the 12 tribes of Israel.   His reign ended in 1973.

During World War II Afghanistan remained neutral and their diplomatic policy was of non-alignment.

Malala is from Pakistan.  She was shot and almost died
because she was in school trying to get an education. Women
in Saudi Arabia are getting educated.  Why not
in Pakistan?

He was overthrown by his own cousin, Mohammed Daoud Khan who established the Republican Afghan government.  Mohammed Daoud was Prime Minister at the time (1929 to 1946), worked hard to develop modern industries and education in the country.  It looks like not all were on board for girls to get an education.  They never reached that point of a higher understanding for girls.

Afghanistan  became a Kingdom again in 1919 under Amanullah Khan I. That Kingdom  eventually came to an end in 1973 when the country became a Republic under Mohammed Daoud Khan.

Mohammed Daoud Khan or Daud Khan was the 5th Prime Minister of Afghanistan from 1953 to 1963 and later the President of Afghanistan.
Prince Daoud was born in Kabul, the eldest son of the diplomat HRH Prince Mohammed Aziz Khan (1877–1933) (an older half-brother of King Mohammed Nadir Shah) and his wife, Khurshid Begum.
He could probably claim descent from Kish, too.
Afghanistan had experienced several coups since 1973, when the Afghan monarchy was overthrown by Daud Khan, who was sympathetic to Soviet overtures.

There are about 50 million Pashtos in the world with about 14 million in Afghanistan.
The Pashtuns are the world's largest segmentary lineage ethnic group. Estimates of the number of Pashtun tribes and clans range from about 350 to over 400. There have been many notable Pashtun people throughout history: Ahmad Shah Durrani is regarded as the founder of the modern state of Afghanistan, while Bacha Khan was a Pashtun independence activist against the rule of the British Raj. Some others include Malala Yousafzai, Shah Rukh Khan, Zarine Khan, Imran Khan, Farhad Darya, Zakir Husain, Hamid Karzai, Mullah Mohammed Omar, and Ashraf Ghani.  How many claim descent from Israel's 10 northern tribes?
Today we have about 14,000 American soldiers in Afghanistan.  "The attacks of September 11, 2001 surprised many Americans; the decision a month later to wage a war in Afghanistan, to end the ability of the government to offer safe haven to Al Qaeda, may have seemed equally surprising. "  Al Qaeda is a terrorist group.  So is the Taliban.

When Nebuchadnezzar of Babylonia Took Jerusalem

Nadene Goldfoot
Athol Bloomer is writing that the House of David continued on in Babylon as a ruling house who had their own court and ruled over Jewish communities of the East until the beginning of the 15th century when Tamerlane came along in 1401.  Then a branch of the family moved to Baghdad to lead the Jewish community until 1700.  He's partially right but exaggerates.

There have been rumors all along in history that the Lost Tribes of Israel are indeed in the Royalty of Britain.  Lots of people claim to be of the Lost Tribes of Israel, but this is the first claim to be from the house of Judah, which would be David's house.

From the Tanakh (Bible) Kings II 25-
King Zedekiah Ben Josiah was in his 9th year of ruling in the 10th month of the 10th day that Nebuchadnezzar, King of Babylonia and his entire army came to wage war against Jerusalem and camped nearby.  They built a siege tower around it and was under siege for two years.  On the  9th day of the 4th month the famine in the city was critical as there was no food left.  the city was breached and all the men of war left during the night by way of the gate between the walls, which was near the king's garden.  The Chaldeans were upon the city all around and the king fled by way of the Arabah.

The Chaldeans chased the king and overtook him at the plains of Jericho and his entire army left him.  The Chaldeans seized the king and brought him up to the king of Babylonia at Riblah, and they judged him then.  They slaughtered his sons before his eyes;  Nebuchadnezzazr blinded his eyes, then bound him in leg-irons and brought him to Babylonia. Zedekiah was the uncle of King Jehoiachin but his original name was Mattaniah.

Earlier, Jehoiachin (called Coniah or Jeconiah originally)  (reined from 597 BCE)  had become king at age 18 and ruled for 3 months and 10 days in Jerusalem.  He was the son of Nehushta, daughter of Einathan of Jerusalem. His father was King Jehoiakim.   He was evil like his father, called Eliakim originally.  He was the son of Josiah and reigned from 608 to 598 BCE.  who was made a king by the Pharaoh Necoh following his brother Jehoahaz.  He had been a subject of Egypt for 3 years, but then had become a Babylonian vassal in 601 BCE.   Jeremiah had warned him not to join up with a pro-Egyptian party, who thought this king was a tyrannical oppressor anyway, but he did.  Jehoiakim died when Jerusalem was under siege by the Babylonians in 598. BCE.

Nebuchadnezzar had laid siege on Jerusalem then as well.  This time, the young king actually went out to Nebuchadnezzar who captured him  in the 8th year of his reign.  He also looted the Temple treasures and the palace, and took all the golden objects that Solomon had made for the sanctuary.  He then exiled all the people of Jerusalem, officers, soldiers amounting to 10,000 people including artisans and Torah scholars.  He left only the poorest of the common people.  Jehoiachin was taken to Babylonia along with the king's mother, his wives, officers and noblemen of the land.  This amounted to 7,000 soldiers, 1,000 artisans and gatekeepers (Torah scholars) who were all mighty warriors.  He then made Zedekiah king in Jerusalem.

The king is now without sight and his house is destroyed.  The 19th year of Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylonia, on the 7th day of the 5th month, the chief executioner came to Jerusalem, burned the Temple, palace and all the buildings of Jerusalem and every great house.  The army smashed the walls surrounding the city.  Everyone was taken into exile except some of the poor workers who were left to  be workers in vineyards and in the fields.

The soldiers found copper and took it to Babylonia.  Gold and silver items were also stolen.  Some important men were killed.  Those who remained in Judah had Gedaliah, son of Ahikam, son of Shaphan over them.  The Israelite officers were in hiding and came out when they heard Gedaliah was the ruler who told them to serve the Babylonian king and all will be well for you. Babylon was the capital of a small city state of Mesopotamia, named Babylonia, located in what is now Iraq, near the modern town of Hilla and on the eastern bank of the Euphrates river. Babylon was founded at the end of the 3rd millennium BC, and lasted through the 2nd century AD.

In the 7th month, Ishmael, son of Nethaniah, son of Elishama of the royal family and 10 men  killed Gedaliah and the Jews and Chaldeans who were with him.  All the population arose and went to Egypt for they feared the Chaldeans.  Killing Gedalia was the final step of the Destruction, since it caused the land to be denuded of its remaining children, who fled in fear of being punished for Gedalia's death.

Now for Athol Bloomer's new theory examined:.

During the 37th year of exile on the 27th day of the 12th month, Evil-merodach, king of Babylonia, in his coronation year, released Jehoiachin, former king of Judah from prison. For the rest of Jehoiachin's life he was treated well.  He was even given an allowance, and they ate meals together.  Nothing is said that he was to continue his royal House of David in Babylon.  That's all Bloomer's conjecture.  Evil merodach reigned from the Jewish year of 3363 to 3386.  This is the year of 5773.  That was 2,387 years ago or 375 BCE.  The Temple was destroyed in 3,338.  By 3,408 the Israelites were given the opportunity to complete the Temple.  .  The division of the kingdom into Israel and Judah took place in the year 2,964.

The kings of Israel were few before they divided.   Saul ben Kish, Ish-Bosheth ben Saul, David ben Jesse, and Solomon ben David were the original kings. David and his son Solomon were related to create the house of David.  Saul and his son were not related to them. Jeroboam, son of Solomon revolted against Rehoboam of Judah below in 933-912 BCE and thus the land was divided into 2 states.  Then there was Nadab, Baasha, Elah, Zimri, Omri, Ahab, Ahaziah, Jehoram, Jehu, Jehoahaz, Jehoash, Jeroboam, Zechariah, Shallum, Menahem, Pekahiah, Pekah, and Hoshea in 730-721 BCE.

The kings of Judah were many.  They were Rehoboam ben Solomon, Abijam ben Rehoboam, Asa ben Abijam, Jehoshaphat ben Asa, Jehoram ben Jehoshaphat, Ahaziah ben Jehoram, Athaliah mother of Ahaziah, Jehoash ben Ahaziah, Amaziah ben Jehoash, Uzziah ben Amaziah, Jotham ben Uzziah, Ahaz ben Jotham, Hezekiah ben Ahaz, Manasseh ben Hezekiah, Amon ben Manasseh, Josiah ben Amon, Jehoahaz ben Josiah, Jehoiakim ben Josiah, Jehoiachin ben Jehoiakim, Zedekiah ben Josiah.

The last Babylonian king was Belshazzar who ruled from 3386-3389.   After that the history goes to Persia-Media with Darius the Mede who defeated Belshazzar and ruled from 3389-3390.  Then there was Cyrus who authorized the return of the Israelite exiles and the rebuilding of the Temple.  He ruled from 3390 to 3393.  Finally we come to Queen Esther's story with King Ahasuerus, husband of Esther and he ruled from 3393 to 3407.  Their son is said to be Darius the Persian who authorized the Temple's completion and he ruled from 3407-3442.

Update: 6/23/14:  According to Babylonian records, the eldest king of Babylon was Nabonidus (556-539 BCE) whose eldest son, Belshazzar, acted as viceroy during his father's lengthy stays in Arabia.

The Ten Lost Tribes of Israel had been exiled previously and constituted a large Jewish population, many of whom remained in Babylon even after Cyrus permitted a return to Israel.  Certain cities like Nehardea, Misibis, Mahoza had an entirely Jewish population.

In the 1st century BCE a Jewish state was set up around Nehardea by 2 outlaw brothers of Nehardea, Babylonia, Anilai (Anilaos) and Asinai (Asinaios) and this lasted for some years.  They founded a small state on the Upper Euphrates and ruled in 20-40 CE.  They were supported by Artabanus III, king of Parthia.  Their raids led to anti-Jewish feeling among the Babylonian populace, and their prestige declined as a result of friction between them and their subjects.  Anilai was defeated by Mithridates, son in law of the Parthian king, and his supporters were all killed.  His defeat had disastrous results for the Jews of Seleucia.  I have no facts showing they were from the House of David.

During the Roman occupation, the Babylonian Jews rose against the emperor Trajan who ruled 98-117 CE. He ordered a massacre of Jews in 116 in Mesopotamia.  Judea was kept under firm control by his general Lucius Quietus. Various risings ended the good life attained in Egypt, Cyrenaica and Cyprus.

Under both Persian and Parthian rule, the Jews of Babylon enjoyed an extensive measure of internal autonomy, being headed by an exilarch of Davidic descent who was the king's representative, while the community had a council of elders governing them.  This is when the Babylonian Talmud was written.   Persecutions took place in the 5th century.  400 CE led to the Jewish revolt under Mar Zutra II.  The Talmud was finished at this time.  Jewish position continued to be difficult and then the Arab conquest took over in the 7th century.

Again, watch what people write about our Jewish history and check it out.  Look for the references they use.

Part III Lost Ten Tribes of Israel and Future DNA Revelations

Nadene Goldfoot
Back in 2011 I wrote about the lost tribe of Manassah, or the Bnei Menashe, who have been practicing Jews for the past 3,000 years.  They also had been one of the exiled tribes by the Assyrian Empire in 723 BCE, along with the others.  For some reason or other, they wound up in NE India, which might by why they have managed to keep practicing Judaism this long.  They were found on the border of Burma.

Many have immigrated to Israel already.  They are to be commended.  This group has prayed 3 times a day to be returned to Zion.  Manasseh had been one of two sons of Joseph.  The other son was Ephraim.  Joseph and his brother Benjamin had been the children of Rachel, the major love of Jacob.

Literature on the Lost Tribes of Israel is spotty at best.  Originally, Israel was a Jewish state, but a piece broke off, calling themselves Judah.  The tribes of Israel were attacked by Assyrians in 723 BCE and the kingdom was destroyed.  The tribes were of the House of David, 1000-960 BCE  whose family continued to rule in the southern kingdom of Judah.  Recorded history differs from legend.  Historians cannot find a record of this happening in other sources, but it is in the Jewish Tanakh, or "Old Testament."  There are descriptions of deportation of people from Reuben, Gad, Manasseh in Gilead, Ephraim and Naphtali.  It shows that only a part of these tribes were deported and the places where they were deported to are known locations given in the accounts.  The communities are mentioned as still existing at the time of when "Kings and Chronicles" were written and didn't completely disappear by assimilation into the Assyrian communities, although part certainly probably did.

One correlating fact is that the story told takes the lost tribes to Medes, which was a place in Persia before Persia even became a state, and today is called Iran.  Our Jewish ancestors were also taken to Persia.  Benjamin of Tudela took a dangerous trip in to Persia and the Arab peninsula 1165 and found Jews saying they were descendants of the Lost Tribes.  He wrote about it in his "Book of Travels."

Writers on this subject are coming from their religious tradition and speculations as well as what is seen in practice.  A complete answer may never be found.  That's why I think that DNA testing will help.  It may not be a complete answer, but it will make a fuzzy picture more complete.  There are many different tests coming up now.  One is to find the haplogroups of the Ydna (male line going back thousands of years) as well as the MTdna (female line which won't tell us a whole lot.)  Then there are tests such as 23&Me and FamilyTreeDNA can give that look at the 23 chromosomes and can tell if you are related to a stranger by looking at the segments on the chromosomes. This is the autosomal test that checks on the SNP's.    Another test is autosomal and checks on the STR's.    By tomorrow there can be others that might answer our questions.

One fact is that probably any people that might be descended from a lost tribe will be a Muslim today just because the land they are most likely living in has become Muslim.  Finding people in India that still maintained their Jewish connection is like a miracle after 3,000 years.

What convinces me about the Pathans of Afghanistan which now includes 15 million people is that culturally, though they are devout Muslims, they circumcise their males at 8 days like Jews do instead of at age 13 which is the Muslim custom.  They follow dietary laws which must be checked further as Muslims follow a few Jewish ones such as not to eat pork.  Their naming process also follows the Lost Tribal names.

Ethiopians have finally convinced Israel's rabbis that they have Jewish roots.  65,000 have moved to Israel, and started in 1974.  They say they are either from the tribe of Dan, or are descendants of King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba of Ethiopia, who had come for a visit to Jerusalem.  DNA did not turn up any evidence of a Jewish connection, but they have been practicing Judaism up to a point in our ancient history.

DNA did turn up the a southern African tribe called the Lemba who tested and were found to have the Ydna haplogroup of the Cohanim, from Aaron and Moses, which would be J1. Moses was of the tribe of Levi.   What a surprise!  They seem to be more Middle Eastern in practices  than African yet speak Bantu and are black.  It's thought they may have come from Yemen.  They had been keeping kosher when discovered.  This doesn't connect them to one of the lost 10 tribes unless you figure a lost tribe had wandered into Yemen after 723 BCE.  Also, couldn't our Jewish salesmen of long ago, working the silk route and other places have gone into Africa?  They would have been carriers of the J1 haplogroup.  They could have even settled down, took wives from the populace, and taught their religion to the others, which must be had had happened at some time in history.  .

Author Tudor Parfitt's" life work has been tracking down the lost tribes of Israel in Africa and Asia.  He's from London.  He came to the Lemba who claimed to be of Israelite origin.  Their story is that they had left Israel and settled in Senna.  The tribe in 1987 was made of 40,000 -70,000people.  They looked African, didn't intermarry with other tribes or eat with other groups, circumcised their boys, had ritual slaughter of animals using a special knife, didn't eat pigs or other forbidden animals, still sacrificed animals on high places, and followed many laws from Moses.  The new moon was important, as in Judaism.  Clan names were from a Semitic language, either Hebrew or Arabic, which can be similar.
