Why Lebanon Fell For Hezbollah ?

 Nadene Goldfoot

Why was it that Lebanon fell for Hezbollah and lost their government to them?  It's Hezbollah that rules.  How is the Lebanese army every going to stand up to Hezbollah and be a barrier for Israel if that is to be the intention?

Lebanon was a unique country in this sea of an Islamic population.  A neighbor of Israel, Jews have had homes there since bible days.  They had good relations with the king when Solomon built the Temple, buying cedar tree wood from Lebanon.  Lebanese forces invaded Israel during their War of Independence of 1948, though.  In 1944 there were 6,261 Jews living there.  Syrian Jews then joined them.  By 1964 there were 5,000 to 7,000 Jews living in Lebanon.  After 1967 most moved to Israel.  1,000 remaining by 1975 left during the Lebanon Civil War and by 1990 only 100 remained.

Politics in Lebanon is based on a sectarian power-sharing structure created on independence from France in 1943. The constitution guarantees all 18 religious sects in the country are ensured representation in government, the military, and the civil service.

Christian Lebanese made up a minority population that existed alongside the Muslims. Religion plays a crucial and somewhat paralyzing role.

A Maronite Christian must serve as president,

a Sunni Muslim as prime minister and

a Shia Muslim as the speaker of Parliament.

Pierre Amine Gemayel, also spelled Jmayyel, Jemayyel or al-Jumayyil ( 6 November 1905 – 29 August 1984), was a Lebanese political leader. A Maronite Catholic, he is remembered as the founder of the Kataeb Party (also known as the Phalangist Party), as a parliamentary powerbroker, and as the father of Bachir Gemayel and Amine Gemayel, both of whom were elected to the presidency of the republic in his lifetime.

                                                                   Gemayel in 2012

Amine Pierre Gemayel born 22 January 1942) is a Lebanese politician who served as the 8th president of Lebanon from 1982 to 1988.   At the age of 40 years, Amine was the youngest president to take office.

He was born in Bikfaya to Pierre Gemayel, the founder of the Christian Kataeb Party (also known as the "Phalanges"). He worked as a lawyer, then was elected as a deputy for Northern Metn in 1970 by-election, following the death of his uncle, Maurice Gemayel, and once again in the 1972 general election. At the start of the Lebanese Civil War, the Phalanges were a member of the Lebanese Front, allied with Syria against the leftist National Movement. However, Syria became their enemy, while they started receiving the support of Israel.

This phase saw the rise of Amine's brother, Bachir, who had disputes with Amine about the military leadership, such as uniting the Christian militias by force.  Endorsed by the United States and Israel, he was elected on 23 September as the eighth president.

In 1982,his brother,  Bachir,  was elected to presidency, but was assassinated before taking office. Bachir Pierre Gemayel  ( 10 November 1947 – 14 September 1982) was a Lebanese militia commander who led the Lebanese Forces, the military wing of the Kataeb Party, in the Lebanese Civil War and was elected President of Lebanon in 1982.  He founded and later became the supreme commander of the Lebanese Forces, uniting major Christian militias by force under the slogan of "Uniting the Christian Rifle".

Gemayel with USA President Ronald Reagan

Gemayel allied with Israel and his forces fought the Palestine Liberation Organization and the Syrian Army. He was elected president on 23 August 1982, but he was assassinated before taking office on 14 September, via a bomb explosion by Habib Shartouni, a member of the Syrian Social Nationalist Party.  Gemayel re-organized the Lebanese Army, receiving support from the Multinational Force in Lebanon and despite fierce internal opposition, he reached the May 17 Agreement with Israel in 1983, which stipulated the withdrawal of the Israeli forces and ending the state of war between the two countries, but didn't ratify it. Under his command, the army, allied with the Lebanese Forces, clashed with Jammoul, a Syrian-backed alliance led by the Druze Walid Jumblatt, in what is known as the Mountain War. By the end of the conflict, the government suffered heavy defeat, and lost control over wide areas of Mount Lebanon. It was followed by February 6 Intifada, where the army was expelled out of West Beirut, and disintegrated into sectarian groups.

All religious sects are represented in the government, the military and the civil service, and political parties are "defined more by religious affiliations than economic or social policy".

The system may look like an attempt to "ensure equality", but it is more of a "division of power between the elites" rather than a recipe for "ensuring good governance". The effect is a "weak, corrupt, patronage-based system", and a government "largely made up of competing bureaucratic fiefdoms rather than a single unit attempting to govern the Lebanese state".

2nd Assassination Attempt On Trump

 Nadene Goldfoot

With back to photographer  is an American man, Ryan Wesley Routh,  son of Daniel Routh in Greensboro, North Carolina, who attempted to assassinate former U.S. president Donald Trump, the Republican Party nominee for the 2024 presidential election, on September 15, 2024. Routh's motives are currently under investigation. The update given by the FBI on September 16 mentioned that Routh had not fired his weapon.

Routh also commented on the Israel-Hamas War in December 2023. In a post showing a photo of a "Students map of Palestine" for the study of the Bible, he wrote, "I am unclear what of part of Israel the Jews owned based on this historic map; Judea perhaps? It seems to be historically all Palestinian."  (This shows he has no educational knowledge of the Jewish history.  Oy Vey!)  A Jane commented that the map he referred to was published in 1881, the actual rendering--designed to show places Jesus visited--doesn't mention the word-Palestine at all, the main areas are clearly marked Judea, Samaria, and Galilee.

Routh was born February 18,  1966 in Guilford County, North Carolina. He later attended North Carolina A&T State University for two semesters in 1995  The 58-year-old Ryan Wesley Routh  was detained Sunday in connection with an apparent assassination attempt on the former president.  Routh is twice divorced and has three adult children. He told a federal magistrate at this arraignment Monday that he earns $3,000 a month as a roofer but owns no assets except for a used truck valued at $1,000.

Greensboro is the third-most populous city in North Carolina, after Charlotte and Raleigh, and the 69th-most populous city in the United States. The population of the Greensboro–High Point metropolitan statistical area was estimated to be 789,842 in 2023. His parents could have been in high school in 1963.   In May and June 1963, the largest civil rights protest in North Carolina history took place in Greensboro. Protesters sought desegregation of public accommodations, and economic and social justice, such as hiring policies based on merit rather than race. They also worked for the overdue integration of public schools. In May 1969, students of James B. Dudley High School were outraged when the administration refused to let a popular candidate, Claude Barnes, run for student union class president, allegedly due to his membership in Youth for the Unity of Black Society. (He was black).  After their appeals to the school were rejected, the students asked activists at North Carolina A&T State University for support in a protest. Protests escalated and after students at A&T had thrown rocks at police, they returned on May 21 armed with tear gas canisters, using them against the crowds. The uprising grew larger, and the governor ordered the National Guard to back up local police.

I am noticing that Ryan Routh's environment, parents and education facilities, were emerged in social behavior and activism.  Ryan may have had Quaker connections to help this along since Quakers were some of early people in North Carolina.  It helps to see how he formed his thinking. Since then, violence has become the norm.  Look what Trump helped along in January 7th with the attack on government property.

In this year of 1966, Ryan's parents were facing election changes.  Republicans were favored in voting.  However, NORTH CAROLINA - 1st District - February 5, 1966, vice Herbert C. Bonner (D), deceased. showed :  Democrats were the favorite winners.  Governors. Republicans won 23 and Democrats 11 of the 35 gubernatorial contests, shifting the party balance from 33–17 in favor of the Democrats to 25–25. Ten Governorships switched from the Democrats to the Republicans: those in Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Florida, Maryland, Minnesota, Nebraska, Nevada and New Mexico.

He  protested in Kyiv after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, and committed his ideas to paper in a self-published 291-page book in a self-published e-book (Ukraine's Unwinnable War -The Fatal Flaw of Democracy, World Abandonment and the Global Citizen-Taiwan, Afghanistan, North Korea and the end of Humanity) :)

His most recent address is listed in Hawaii, but he spent most of his life in North Carolina, according to property records. Routh owned Camp Box Honolulu, a shed-building company, according to his LinkedIn profile. The account also says that he studied at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University and graduated in 1998 when 32.  The suspect lived in North Carolina for most of his life before moving in 2018 to Kaaawa, Hawaii. In 2018, Routh moved from Greensboro, North Carolina, to KaÊ»aÊ»awa, Hawaii.  He and his son operated a company building sheds, according to an archived version of the webpage for the business.

Ryan Wesley Routh (center), who was detained by US authorities on Sunday after an apparent assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump. (gofundme)

In 1880, the most Routh families were found in the USA. In 1840, there were 6 Routh families living in Ohio, which was about 21% of all the recorded Routh's in the USA. Between 1840 and 1920, the Routh family name was found in the following countries: USA, UK, Canada, and Scotland. The surname Routh is an English habitational name that originated in Routh, East Yorkshire. The name may come from the Old Norse word hrúthr, which means "scurf" or "rough ground".

Routh seems to be walking on "rough ground," as well, not happy with what his environment
is providing him and becoming such an activist to change it all without the needed experience
and skills to do so.  He has made enough wrong decisions in life to warrant the hoosegow as
his final home.

Records show Routh's issues with the law go back to the 1990s when in his 20's, and include lesser charges of writing bad checks. But in 2002 he was charged with possession of a weapon of mass destruction, a felony, according to North Carolina Department of Corrections records. In another incident, he was charged with misdemeanors, including a hit-and-run offense, resisting arrest, and a concealed weapons violation, the records show.  In 2003, he was sentenced for driving without a license, carrying a concealed weapon and hit-and-run. In 2010 he was convicted of possessing stolen goods. For each of these charges he was given probation.

Ryan Wesley Routh  camped outside the golf course in West Palm Beach with food and a rifle for nearly 12 hours, according to court documents filed Monday. He is accused of lying in wait for the former president before a Secret Service agent opened fire, thwarting the potential attack.

In an interview with Newsweek Romania in 2022, he said, "My initial goal was to come fight (in Ukraine)… but I'm 56, so initially they were like, I have no military experience, so they were like, you're not an ideal candidate. So they said, not right this minute. So plan B was to come here to Kyiv and promote getting more people here."  A TV news report showed a Ukrainian spokesman explaining that they thought something was mentally wrong with him at the time.

"This is about good versus evil," he told the outlet in a video interview. So he became an activist.  According to posts on his Twitter account in 2020, Routh has expressed shifting political views over the years. In 2016, he supported Donald Trump, but by 2020, he voiced his dissatisfaction, stating, "I will be glad when you are gone."  Routh also supported Bernie Sanders in 2020, criticizing Joe Biden as "sleepy Joe". His political stance evolved further in 2024, where he expressed concern over democracy in a post tagging Biden, and telling him his campaign slogan should be "Keep America Democratic and Free." In 2020, he also supported Tulsi Gabbard, calling for an executive order on police misconduct and he made several small donations to the Democratic fundraising platform ActBlue, contributing 19 times in 2019 and 2020 with amounts ranging from $1 to $25, as recorded by the Federal Election Commission.] By early 2024, he suggested a Nikki Haley and Vivek Ramaswamy ticket for the Republican primary.  Nikki has been my favorite also, so here he shows me a ray of sanity.  I wonder if our reasons for liking her are the same?  However, Ramaswamy would never be a choice of mine.  Since the Oct. 7 Hamas attack in Israel, Ramaswamy has increasingly generated controversy over his remarks about the U.S.’s role in the conflict, and his suggestion that the U.S. should not provide military aid to Israel until the government clearly outlines its steps after a Gaza invasion.

Despite being a convicted felon, in 2024 he voted in the Democratic primary in Guilford County, North Carolina. Routh had additionally donated $140 to Democratic causes since 2019 and is registered in North Carolina as an independent voter.  This man has managed to keep out of jail but has been a petty criminal for a long long time.  Seems as if more than the FBI is needed to keep assassins from developing somehow, like our laws already on the books to be actually used, or people to follow up potential problematic people and help them if possible to become worthy citizens.  This man was caught just in the nick of time.  What happens now?  He was a firecracker ready to explode.

The Fiddler On The Roof Town of Odessa Shtetls and Their Lives With Russian Anti-Semites Causing Pogroms

 Nadene Goldfoot

Members of the Jewish Labour Bund with bodies of their comrades killed in Odessa during the Russian revolution of 1905.  This Bund was "General Federation of Jewish Workers in Lithuania, Poland, and Russia.  They were from the Jewish Socialist Party, founded at a conference in Vilna in 1897, out of the Jewish workers' movement which had existed in Russia from the end of the 1880's.  It served at first as both a trade union and a political party, struggling for better working conditions and for popular education, especially in social problems.  They were outlawed in Czarist Russia and members were severely punished if discovered by the police.

The 1905 Pogrom of Odessa was the worst anti-Jewish pogrom in Odessa's history. Between 18 and 22 October 1905, ethnic Russians, Ukrainians, and Greeks killed over 400 Jews and damaged or destroyed over 1600 Jewish properties.

The Russian Revolution of 1905, also known as the First Russian Revolution, was a wave of mass political and social unrest that spread through vast areas of the Russian Empire.  The 1905 revolution was primarily spurred by the international humiliation as a result of the Russian defeat in the Russo-Japanese War, which ended in the same year. Late in the night on February 8, 1904, Japan launched a surprise attack against the Russian-held Port Arthur, along the coast of Manchuria, beginning the Russo-Japanese War. Russia faced many defeats as it battled Japan while also fighting a revolution on the home front.

Nicholas II or Nikolai II Alexandrovich Romanov, known in the Russian Orthodox Church as Saint Nicholas the Passion-Bearer, was the last Emperor of Russia, King of Congress Poland and Grand Duke of Finland, ruling from 1 November 1894 until his abdication on 15 March 1917, end of WWI.  On 1 March 1881, following the assassination of his grandfather, Tsar Alexander II, Nicholas became heir apparent upon his father's accession as Alexander III.

Tsar Nicholas II family portrait On 1 March 1881, following the assassination of his grandfather, Tsar Alexander II, Nicholas became heir apparent upon his father's accession as Alexander III.

The mass unrest was directed against the Tsar alongside the nobility and ruling class.  The Russian Imperial Romanov family (Nicholas II of Russia, his wife Alexandra Feodorovna, and their five children: Olga, Tatiana, Maria, Anastasia, and Alexei) were shot and bayoneted to death by Bolshevik revolutionaries under Yakov Yurovsky on the orders of the Ural Regional Soviet in Yekaterinburg on the night of 16–17 July 1918.  Tsar Nicholas II enacted some constitutional reform (namely the October Manifesto). This took the form of establishing the State Duma, the multi-party system, and the Russian Constitution of 1906.

Previous pogroms occurred in 1821, 1859, 1871 and 1881.   These earlier incidents were thought to be a result of "frictions unleashed by modernization according to Jarrod Tanny, historian," rather than by a resurgence of medieval antisemitism, but the 1905 pogrom was definitely caused by anti-Semitism.  I'd say they all had been, and modernization really should have been a determent, and a prevention, not a cause.  Whatever were the Russians thinking that modernization actually meant?  Getting rid of the Jews?

Jews were under unbelievable penalties for being of another faith in Russia.  About 600 oppressive enactments regarding the Jews were published during the reign of Nicholas I who regard them as an injurious element.  In 1827, military service was brutally imposed on Jews and young teen-age boys were taken into the army, called Cantonists; maybe meaning fodder for the canons?  One of several reasons was to dispel them from their Jewish families.  The frontiers of land called "The Pale of Settlement," land where Jews were allowed to live, was restricted in 1835 and remained effective until 1915.  A censorship was imposed on Jewish books in 1836, and in 1844, the Kahal (Jewish congregation having autonomous rights and responsible for taxation) was abolished;

Czar Alexander II tried to Russify the Jews by education and gradually relaxed the restrictions, while the judicial law of 1864 contained no further anti-Jewish discrimination than already existed.  At this time, 65,000 Russian Jews were engaged in agriculture.  Jews became prominent in economics, culture, and left-wing politics;  social anti-Semitism now began to replace or reinforce the former religious prejudices. To me, anti-Semitism is that, regardless of original reasoning.  It's abhorrent and inexcusable.

                                Family portrait:

As luck would have it, the well-meaning Alexander II was assassinated  in 1881 and this made the Jews chief victims. On 13 March [1 March, Old Style], 1881, Alexander II, the Emperor of Russia, was assassinated in Saint Petersburg, Russia while returning to the Winter Palace from Mikhailovsky Manège in a closed carriage.

Main assassin organizer Andrei Zhelyabov, former Odessa law student kicked out for membership in student unrests, was hung with his wife and other Kiev student rebels. it was said he had been arrested a few days before the attack but was the accused assassin anyway.  He was not Jewish.

The assassination was planned by the Executive Committee of Narodnaya Volya, chiefly by Andrei Zhelyabov. He had reigned from 1855 to 1881 and had alleviated some of the anti-Jewish decrees of his father, Nicholas I, and this encouraged emancipatory elements in Russian Jewry.

      The Mir Shtetl

Appalling pogroms of the early 1880's were the result, influencing the official view regarding the Jews as a foreign element to be kept apart from the village population which was expressed in the MAY LAWS. As for being foreigners, Jews had been living in Russian land since the 900s if not before.

Czar Alexander III implemented the May Laws in 1882, which isolated Russian Jews even further. Under these laws, they were not allowed to live anywhere outside of shtetls and nearby towns. They also had to follow some Christian customs, such as closing businesses on Sundays and Christian holidays. This new law resulted in poverty and hunger amongst the Jewish community. Originally, regulations of May 1882 were intended only as temporary measures until a future revision of the laws concerning the Jews but remained in effect for more than thirty years.

Shtetls were isolated from other vibrant towns and cities in Russia, as they were located on the western border of Russia. Russian Jews were ordered to live in these run-down areas by Catherine the Great in 1791 due to business competition and the increase of anti-Semitism. They became the home for Russian Jews and others for over a century.

Although shtetl means little town, history shows that hundreds and thousands of people could live in one shtetl together in very crowded conditions. Shtetls usually were made up of wooden houses, synagogues, study houses, a marketplace, and a Jewish cemetery. Because Russia was trying to drive out the Jews, some Christian churches could’ve also been found in shtetls. Shtetls were ran under a kahal, which means “community council." History also shows that Jews were not the only groups of people living in shtetls. Many non-Jews lived in shtetls, too. Because of this, no shtetl was a spitting image to another. Each shtetl was distinct in terms of dialect, politics, etc.

As the Russians feared that Jews were interfering with the country’s progress, the Jews were even more scared of the Russian government while they lived in shtetls. The Russian government would invade the shtetls and destroy homes and businesses at any time they pleased. These organized riots were known as pogroms, and they were so violent that they often led to injuries and deaths within the Russian Jewish community. Jews were never at ease while living in shtetls because a pogrom by the Russian government could happen at any minute.
