When Marathon Runners First Started: An Apropos Purim Story Of This Moment

 Nadene Goldfoot

Runners from one ancient Greek town to another

Setting out from Athens, Phidippides made for Sparta journeying by way of Eleusis, Megara, and Corinth. Greek couriers of his day are believed to have been able to cover over a hundred kilometres a day, but Phidippides is said to have run the 250 kilometres to Sparta in only two days; much of it over uneven and rocky terrain.

Unfortunately, when he reached Sparta, the city was in the middle of a religious festival that forbade mobilization for war during its celebrations. When at last the Spartans set off for Athens several days later, the battle had already been fought.

  • The Legend: The famous tale, popularized centuries after the event, tells of Pheidippides (or sometimes Eukles) running directly from the Marathon battlefield to Athens (about 25-26 miles) to announce the victory, after which he died.

  • The Battle of Marathon (490 BCE) took place on the coastal plain of Marathon in eastern Greece, approximately 40 km (25 miles) northeast of Athens. The site is situated near Marathon Bay, where the Persian fleet landed, and the Athenian army camped. The battlefield features the Athenian burial mound (Soros), located about 4 km south of the modern town of Marathon.

  • The Historical Account: According to the historian Herodotus (writing closer to the time), Pheidippides was actually a professional courier sent before the battle from Athens to Sparta to request aid, covering over 150 miles (240 km) in two days.
  • The Battle (490 BCE): The Greeks, led by Athens and Plataea, defeated the first Persian invasion force led by Darius I.
  • There were 3 Kings named  Darius of Persia.  Darius I reigned (522-486 BCE) and had inherited the throne of Cyrus.  At the beginning of his reign, he permitted Zerubbabel and the Jews who had returned to Jerusalem to resume reconstruction of the Temple.
King Darius I.  Cyrus II was his father as he inherited the throne from him.  He died in 529 BCE as King of Persia.  He had many conquests of which he overran the Babylonian empire, including Judah.  He pursued an enlightened policy towards his subject peoples and in 538, granted permission to the exiles of Judah in Babylon to return to their homeland and rebuild the Temple.  (Ezra 1:1-44;  II Chon.36:22-3).  The Jewish exiles regarded Cyrus as a Divine agent.
  • Our history tells us that Cyrus II's wife (Queen) was Hadassah, or Queen Esther (Hebrew)  of our Purim Story, found in the Bible (Esther 2:7). We know Esther as being the Queen of King Ahasuerus, and through her intervention with him, and with the aid of her kinsman, Mordecai, succeeded in averting the annihilation of the Persian Jewish community planned by the king's adviser, Haman.
  •  Right now this story is also acting as a unifying agent between the Iranians of the Revolution and Israel as both love Kings Cyrus and Darius, part of their history as well.
  •   Reading about this Marathon history involving them is so apropos at this moment when we all are sitting and waiting to see what President Trump will do with his fleet off shore;  will he attack as promised or will he listen  to his aides and call it off?  Yesterday he gave Iran's Ayatollah 48 hours to go along with his expectations that also include Israel's as well.
  • Darius I attacked the Greek city-states primarily to punish Athens and Eretria for supporting the Ionian Revolt (499–493 BC), where they assisted in burning the Persian city of Sardis. Darius also sought to expand his empire into Europe and secure his western frontier by suppressing the mainland Greek states that threatened regional stability.

Charilaos Vasilakos (GreekΧαρίλαος Βασιλάκος, November 1875 – 1 December 1964)[ was a Greek athlete and the first man to win a marathon race. He also won a silver medal for a second place finish in marathon at the 1896 Summer Olympics in AthensAs a young man he studied law at the University of Athens and worked in the Athens court of first instance. He was a member of the Panellinios sports club and a dedicated long-distance runner.
1896  Spyridon "Spyros" Louis, 1st Olympic marathon winner

When the modern Olympics began in 1896, the initiators and organizers were looking for a great popularizing event, recalling the ancient glory of Greece. The idea of a marathon race came from Michel Bréal, who wanted the event to feature in the first modern Olympic Games in 1896 in Athens. This idea was heavily supported by Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the modern Olympics, as well as by the Greeks.

The Greeks staged a selection race for the Olympic marathon on 10 March 1896 that was won by Charilaos Vasilakos in 3 hours and 18 minutes (with the future winner of the introductory Olympic Games marathon coming in fifth).

The winner of the first Olympic Marathon, on 10 April 1896 (a male-only race), was Spyridon „Spyros“ Louis, a Greek water-carrier, in 2 hours 58 minutes and 50 seconds.

Modern Legacy: The marathon race was invented for the 1896 Athens Olympics to commemorate this ancient heroic feat. The distance was standardized to 26.2 miles (42.195 km) in 1908.

A full marathon is 26.2 miles (
), and a half marathon is exactly half that distance, at 13.1 miles (
). These standard road racing distances are precisely measured, with the marathon distance formalized at the 1908 Olympics.

Modern Marathon

The women’s marathon was introduced at the 1984 Summer Olympics (Los Angeles, USA) and was won by Joan Benoit of the United States with a time of 2 hours 24 minutes and 52 seconds.  In 1984, the Olympic marathon finally welcomed women—and 26-year-old Joan Benoit Samuelson from the USA seized the opportunity. Remarkably, just 17 days earlier, she had undergone arthroscopic knee surgery.

Her husband is Scott Samuelson , winner of the 2015 Hiett Prize in the Humanities.

Joan crossed the finish line in 2:24:52—just a minute shy of the world record—and stunned the world. 🥇 This wasn’t just a gold medal; it was the very first Olympic marathon for women, claimed with grit, grace, and guts.

Since the modern games were founded, it has become a tradition for the men’s Olympic marathon to be the last event of the athletics calendar, with a finish inside the Olympic stadium, often within hours of, or even incorporated into, the closing ceremonies. The marathon of the 2004 Summer Olympics revived the traditional route from Marathon to Athens, ending at Panathinaiko Stadium, the venue for the 1896 Summer Olympics.

                                Samuel Kamu Wanjiru

Samuel Kamau Wanjirū (10 November 1986 – 15 May 2011)died at 24 years old,  was a Kenyan long-distance runner who won the 2008 Beijing Olympics Marathon in an Olympic record time of 2:06:32; becoming the first Kenyan to win the Olympic gold in the marathon. He became the youngest gold medallist in the marathon since 1932.

He set the current (as of 2020) 10,000m World Junior Record in 2005 and set the half marathon world record 3 times. In 2009, he won both the London Marathon and Chicago Marathon, running the fastest marathons ever recorded in the United Kingdom and United States, respectively. He retained his Chicago title in 2010 in a season fraught with injury.

In 2011, he died after a fall from a balcony at his home in Nyahururu following a domestic dispute..

The Olympic men’s record is 2:06:32, set at the 2008 Summer Olympics by Samuel Kamau Wanjiru of Kenya (average speed about 20.01 kilometres per hour or 12.43 miles per hour). The Olympic women’s record is 2:23:07, set at the 2012 Summer Olympics by Tiki Gelana of Ethiopia. The men’s London 2012 Summer Olympic marathon winner was Stephen Kiprotich of Uganda (2:08:01). Per capita, the Kalenjin tribe of Rift Valley Province in Kenya have produced a highly disproportionate share of marathon and track-and-field winners.

Bible's Promised Land To The Jews

 Nadene Goldfoot

The Promised Land in the Bible is the land of Canaan, which is now known as Israel.  God promised Abraham that his descendants would inherit this land.  Yes, Jews are in full knowledge of the Palestinians Arabs being their very distant cousins, as DNA now hints at this.  The Arabs separated from Abraham's family group long ago with Isaac  and Ishmael;  and then again and again.  Arabs began converting to Islam in the 7th century CEThe process of conversion was gradual, with most tribes of the Arabian Peninsula converting to Islam by the time of the prophet Muhammad's death in 632 CE.   During the entire history of Jews in the Promised land, there was no country of Palestine.  They were part of other empires if they continued to live.

                                                 THE LAND

17,500 square miles of which 45% is in Transjordan is the total surface of the Promised Land  with frontiers determined in the bible.  The extent of the Promised Land reached the Pelusium arm of the Nile Delta, the gulf of Elath, and the Euphrates River opposite the city of Aleppo in Syria in the East.  It included most of Syria and altogether covered about 58,000 square miles.   This entire area was populated by the Israelites under Kings David and his son after he died, Solomon (I Kings 5:4).  The Israelites were the ancestors of today's Jews, for it it is an inherited group of people who rarely intermarried with others.

The Promised Land, also known as Canaan, was approximately 300,000 square milesThe Israelites settled in a portion of the Promised Land that was about 10,000 square miles. The total area of the State of Israel today is 22,145 sq.km (8,630 sq. miles), of which 21,671 sq. km is land area. Israel is some 420 km in length and about 115 km across at the widest point. The country is bordered by Lebanon to the north, Syria to the northeast, Jordan to the east, Egypt to the southwest and the Mediterranean Sea to the west.

The land was called Mesopotamia in the beginning.  Mesopotamia was a country in SW Asia and is now called Iraq.  Mesopotamia is a historical region of West Asia situated within the Tigris–Euphrates river system, in the northern part of the Fertile Crescent. Today, Mesopotamia is known as present-day Iraq. In the broader sense, the historical region of Mesopotamia also includes parts of present-day IranTurkeySyria and Kuwait.
It's the land Abraham left behind.  He reached out to live in land located in Assyrian Empire holdings that Nebuchadnezzar ultimately held anyway.

The Sumerians and Akkadians, each originating from different areas, dominated Mesopotamia from the beginning of recorded history (c. 3100 BC) to the fall of Babylon in 539 BCE.

When Solomon died in 933 BCE, the 10 northerly tribes of the 12 had split from  the land of Israel over taxes after a revolt led by Jeroboam against King Rehoboam, Solomon's son and successor,  in 933 BCE; land sometimes then called the kingdom of Samaria because Samaria became the capital in about 890 BCE.  Israel had been an empire since Saul was king (about 1030 to 1010 BCE) till 933 BCE, which was about 97 years, when Solomon died.  The kings of Israel were:  Saul, David, Solomon, Jeroboam, Nadab, Baasha, Elah, Zimri or Omri-887-876 BCE, Ahab, Ahaziah, Jehoram, Jehu, Jehoshaz, Johoash, Jeroboam II (785-745 BC; Zechariah, Shallum, Menahem, Pekahiah, Pekah, Hoshea (730-721 BCE);  a total of 21 kings over 212 years.

Rehoboam, son of Solomon, king of Israel/Judah

At the same time, the Recognized state of Judah, with some of Benjaminites, reorganized with Rehoboam  as king.  Following was Abijam, Asa, Jehoshaphat, Jehoram, Ahaziah, Athalia, Joash, Amaziah, Azariah or Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, Hezekiah (720-692 BCE), Manasseh, Amon, Josiah, Jehoahaz , Jehoiakim, Jehoiachin, Zedekiah (597-586 BCE).  It had lasted as a state with 23 kings  for 347 years.  The USA has only been a state for 249 years since 1776.

Babylon or Babylonia was an ancient state of Western Asia, also known in the Bible as the land of Shinar or of the Kasdim (Chaldees).  This is where Abraham's family came from; Ur of the Chaldeans.   Abraham and his group had migrated to  Eretz Yisrael where he later fought Amraphel, king of Shinar (Gen.14).  Babylon had a bad reputation and Abraham wanted a better culture for his future children.

336 years later, The Babylonian Nebuchadnezar II (604-561 BCE) inherited the Assyrian Empire.  He had conquered the state of Judah (597, and 586 BCE) and had exiled many Jews to Babylon.  The Jewish king Jehoiachin was king of Israel/Judah at the time.  He was crowned king at age 18 during the Babylonian siege of Jerusalem.  he reigned for 3 months and 10 days before capitulating to Nebuchadnezzar. he was then taken to exile in Babylonia, remaining in detention until the accession of Evil-Merodach (561 BCE) when he was released (II kings 24-5);  II Chron.36:8-10).  Official Babylonian records relating to his captivity have been recovered.

Amel-Marduk succeeded Nebuchadnezzar II as king of Babylon in 562 BCE. However, Amel-Marduk was murdered after two years and replaced by his brother-in-law, Neriglissar.

Cyrus II of Persia c. 600 – 530 BC), commonly known as Cyrus the Great, was the founder of the Persian Achaemenid Empire, and that's where our history of Purim comes in.   Hailing from Persis, he brought the Achaemenid dynasty to power by defeating the Median Empire and embracing all of the previous civilized states of the ancient Near East, expanding vastly and eventually conquering most of West Asia and much of Central Asia to create what would soon become the largest polity in human history at the time. The Achaemenid Empire's largest territorial extent was achieved under Darius the Great, whose rule stretched from Southeast Europe in the west to the Indus River valley in the east. After conquering the Median Empire, Cyrus led the Achaemenids to conquer Lydia and eventually the Neo-Babylonian Empire.

Ancient Near East prior to the invasion of Babylon by Cyrus the Great of Persian Empire

The Babylonian captivity initiated by Nebuchadnezzar came to an end with the fall of Babylon to the Achaemenid king Cyrus the Great in 539 BCE. Within a year of their liberation, some exiled Jews returned to their homeland. Their liberation did little to erase the memory of five decades of imprisonment and oppression. Instead, Jewish literary accounts ensured that accounts of the hardship endured by the Jews, as well as of the monarch responsible for it, would be remembered for all time. The Book of Jeremiah calls Nebuchadnezzar a "lion" and a "destroyer of nations".

How Does Trump Compare To King Cyrus?

 Nadene Goldfoot

King Cyrus II of Persia (today's Iran)  died in 529 BCE.  He was known for his many conquests and had overrun the Babylonian Empire, which at the time, included Eretz Yisrael, that later after 139 CE was called Palestine.

Cyrus is the grandson of King Ahasuerus and Queen Esther.  Cambyses, Cyrus' father dies when he is 12 years old.  His grandparents (King Ahasuerus and Queen Esther) summon him and his mother (Mandane) to come live with them at the palace.  Cyrus is taught by Esther and the King about the laws of God and the prophecies written 150 years before by God through the prophets about him (Cyrus).

When the time comes Cyrus king of Persia issues the edict for the Jews to return to Israel:   "Isa 44:28  That saith of Cyrus, He is my shepherd, and shall perform all my pleasure: even saying to Jerusalem, Thou shalt be built; and to the temple, Thy foundation shall be laid."   Below is the Genealogy of Cyrus the Great, king of Persia and Darius King of the Medes complete with notes and references. Genealogy of Cyrus the Great and Darius King of the Medes

Though he was king, he pursued an enlightened policy towards his subject peoples and by 538 BCE, 9 years after becoming king, had granted permission to the exiles of Judah in Babylon  to return to their homeland of Judah and rebuild the Temple.  (Ezra 1:1-44); II Chronicles 36:22-3)

For the next 2 centuries, both the mass of Jews in Exile in Mesopotamia and in the homeland in Eretz Yisrael were under Persian rule.  Eretz Yisrael or Judah continued to be a Persian Province with some degree of local autonomy.  This Persian rule made inevitable considerable movements of population from one part of this area to another.

The Jewish exiles regarded Cyrus as a Divine agent (Is.44:-28;  45:1).  "Like Cyrus 2,500 years ago, Trump is now seen as an instrument of God. And the plan: to build the Third Temple on the Temple Mountwhere the Al-Aqsa Mosque currently stands.

The Al-Aqsa Mosque is also known as the Qibli Mosque or Qibli Chapel. The name Qibli comes from the fact that the mosque is closest to the Qiblah.

The Al-Aqsa Mosque is the main congregational prayer hall in the Al-Aqsa compound, which is also known as the Haram al-Sharif. The compound is a religious sanctuary in Jerusalem that covers the entire Temple Mount area.
The Al-Aqsa Mosque is one of two holy places in the Al-Aqsa compound, along with the Dome of the Rock. Muslims consider the Al-Aqsa compound to be the third holiest place in Islam, after Mecca and Medina.

Minaret of the Mosque next to the courtyard of the Christians' Church of the Holy Sepulchre

During the seige of Jerusalem in 70 CE during the Roman War, Solomon's Temple served as a center of military activity, and was destroyed by the conquering Romans.  A Roman temple was later built on the site, and since the Moslem Period, a mosque has stood there;  the Mosque of Omar.   The Ayyubid Mosque of Omar (Arabicمسجد عمر بن الخطاب) is an Islamic place of worship inside the Old City of Jerusalem. It is located opposite the southern courtyard of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, in the Muristan area of the Christian Quarter. The mosque is not open to tourists, and can be accessed only for praying.

In the background is the Dome of the Rock (Al-Aqsa) Mosque

But the Al-Aqsa Mosque, is a mosque in Jerusalem, located in the Old City at the terminal point of the Prophet Muhammad’s Isrāʾ journey.

According to Islamic sources, the Qurʾān (17:1) indicates that Muhammad was miraculously transported one night from Mecca (al-masjid al-ḥaram, or “the sacred place of worship”) to this site in Jerusalem (al-masjid al-aqṣā, “the farther place of worship”).

On that spot he led AbrahamMosesJesus, and other messengers (rusul) of God in ritual prayer (ṣalāt). That same night he was taken up to heaven from the site of the Dome of the Rock for an encounter with God (see Miʿrāj). The term Al-Aqsa Mosque is often extended to denote the entirety of the plaza on which the mosque and the Dome of the Rock stand, although the plaza is known formally as Al-Ḥaram al-Sharīf (“the Noble Sanctuary”).

The Dome of the Rock on the Temple Mount (Al-Aqsa) in the Old City of Jerusalem

Its initial construction was undertaken by the Umayyad Caliphate on the orders of Abd al-Malik during the Second Fitna in 691–692 CE, and it has since been situated on top of the site of the Second Jewish Temple (built in c. 516 BCE to replace the destroyed Solomon's Temple and rebuilt by Herod the Great), which was destroyed by the Romans in 70 CE. The original dome collapsed in 1015 and was rebuilt in 1022–23.

Rabbi Kessin believes that Trump is a reincarnation of Cyrus.  Rabbi Mendel Kessin is an internationally renowned lecturer and educator and has spoken extensively around the world including in the United States, Europe, South Africa, Canada and Israel on topics of Hashkafa, Learning Methodology and Shmiras Haloshon (proper speech) with emphasis on the writings of R’ Moshe Chaim Luzzatto (Ramchal). Rabbi Kessin received S’michah from Rabbi Moshe Feinstein and held a close relationship with Rav Chaim Friedlander Zatza”l, and helped with the publication of his Sifrei Haramchal (green collection). He has a PhD in Psychology from Fordham University in NY and runs a private practice in Brooklyn and Lakewood.

Rabbi Lawrence Haijeff agrees with him.  Lawrence Hajioff is a British-American rabbi, educator, and writer. He is on the Judaic studies faculty of the Stern College for Women at Yeshiva University and is also the Assistant Director of Admissions. Hajioff served as the official rabbi for Birthright Israel in Manhattan, New York. Hajioff is also the author of three books: Jew Got Questions? (2014), Will Jew Marry Me?: A Guide to Dating, Relationships, Love and Marriage (2016), and The Future: A Guide to the Jewish Messiah, Israel, and The End of Days (2018).

In my opinion, it was Trump's son-in-law, Jered Kushner (b: January 10, 1981), who was responsible for any dealings Trump accepted about Israel.  Jered is an orthodox Jew, and of course, Trump is a Christian that many are following.

Kushner was the primary Trump administration participant for the Middle East Peace Process, authoring the Trump peace plan and facilitating the talks that led to the signing of the Abraham Accords and other normalization agreements between Israel and various Arab states in 2020. For his efforts in the Middle East, Kushner has twice been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Years later, Kushner was invited to address a forum at the Harvard Kennedy School to talk about Middle East issues. Tarek Masoud, the school's director of Middle East Initiatives, said he chose Kushner since he was the architect of the Abraham Accords.  In the interview, Kushner referred to the valuable potential of Gaza’s “waterfront property,” suggesting that Israel should move civilians from Gaza to the Negev desert in southern Israel.

Though Jered has all the knowledge that Trump doesn't about the Jewish people, Trump is getting the praise.  I believe that King Cyrus, being part of the family himself of Queen Esther, worked directly in helping the Israelites, not through a 2nd party.  Let's give Jered the reincarnation.
