Cyrus II Over His Judeans, King of Persia

 Nadene Goldfoot

The Persian Empire (Iran)  has taken the Babylonian Empire.  Cyrus II was their king.  In the course of his conquests,  he had overrun the Babylonian Empire which included Judah.  He was unique as a conqueror.

King Darius I on his throne from (522-486 BCE inherited the throne from CYRUS.   At the beginning of his reign, he permitted Zerubbabel and the Jews  who had returned to Jerusalem to resume reconstruction of the Temple.

He and his son Darius  pursued an enlightened  policy towards these subjects , and by 538 BCE, granted to the exiles of Judah living in old Babylon to return to their homeland  and rebuild the destroyed Temple.  (Ezra 1: 1-44) (II Chronicles 36:22-3).  The Jewish exiles regarded Cyrus as a Divine agent (Is. 44:28)  (45:1).

Queen Esther who was winner in the beauty contest

Of course, our holiday of Purim, a very happy holiday, is from this history.  In fact, many stories have him as King Ahasueros (King Xerxes I) and Queen Esther's son or grandson.  Name derivation: The Hebrew name Ahasuerus (Akhashverosh) comes from the Old Persian name Xšayāršā, which Greek historians translated as Xerxes. Reign: He ruled the Persian Achaemenid Empire from 486 to 465 BCE.,   21 years.

For the next two centuries, both the mass of Jews in EXILE in Mesopotamia and in the homeland in Judah were under Persian rule. It was under Persian auspices that there took place the return from exile to Judah which, however, continued to be a Persian Province with some degree of local autonomy.

Moreover, the political unity of the Middle East under Persian rule made inevitable considerable movements of population from one part of this area to another.

The Book of Esther envisages Jews living throughout the 127 provinces of the Persian Empire and depicts them as numerous and influential in the capital,  Susa (Shushan).  The exact period and historical settling of the plot against those described in this work cannot be ascertained.

Babylonia lies inside Mesopotamia, while Media lies outside of it to the east.

                          LIVING IN THE HOMELAND

It is, however, certain that at least from  the 4th century BCE onward, Jews lived in considerable numbers in  Judah proper as they continued to do although little is known about their history when the area was controlled by PARTHIA, from 250 BCE onward.  Parthia was an Empire of Iranic people. of the (3rd century BCE-226 CE).  It ruled over the vast mass of the Jewish population in Mesopotamia.  Babylonia and Media.

The Parthians restored Antigonus Mattathias to the throne of Judah in 40 BCE.

KIDNAPPED Seventy Years Ago

 Nadene Goldfoot

Wasn't he lucky, though?  Nebuchadnezzar II (604-561 BCE) inherited a whole empire because of his victory!    He was the Babylonian king that came to own Assyria's Empire. He had won the battle over the Assyrian-Egyptian alliance at Carchemish in 605.  He was now the Emperor as he conquered all the lands from the Euphrates River to the Egyptian frontier, including Judah.

His  conquest achievement was in taking the land of Judah in 597 BCE and again in his last attack in 586 BCE, 11 years later.  He succeeded in exiling many of its Jews to Babylon. Many scholars cite 597 BCE as the date of the first deportation, for in that year King Jehoiachin was deposed and apparently sent into exile with his family, his court, and thousands of workers.

Others say the first deportation followed the destruction of Jerusalem by Nebuchadrezzar in 586 BCE; if so, the Jews were held in Babylonian captivity for 48 years.

They joined up with a population of 27,290  Hebrews that had been exiled by Assyria in 721 BCE., but that that was a good 135 years earlier. As far as they were concerned, they were simply taking back their own people who had once strayed away during some bad times.

Among those who accept a tradition (Jeremiah 29:10) that the exile lasted 70 years, some choose the dates 608 to 538, others 586 to about 516 (the year when the rebuilt Temple was dedicated in Jerusalem).  This one is most popular.  They were kidnapped 70 years ago from their home in Judah!  Now they are faced with a choice of staying or returning to their ancestral homeland!  Most of them had never lived there, being born in Babylonia.

Here's how it all came about:

Ur, modern Tall al-Muqayyar or Tell el-Muqayyar, Iraq, important city of ancient southern Mesopotamia (Sumer), situated about 140 miles (225 km) southeast of the site of Babylon and about 10 miles (16 km) west of the present bed of the Euphrates River.  As an absolute minimal then, Abram, Sarai, Lot and all their herds, livestock, servants, etc must have walked 1551 miles (2494 Km) and it was probably MUCH more than that!

Was this group Jacob's family-and were they Hyksos people?

It was Terah with his son, Abraham and wife Sarah who had left long ago, possibly with a group later called the Hyksos, though they called themselves Habiru (Hebrew) and that Haran, their stopover, was a Habiru town,  in about 1500 BCE, who emigrated and created  Haran, that became a trading town,  and lived there for quite a while, then continued onto Egypt. Haran was Abram's brother who also lived in Ur of the Chaldees (Gen 11:26-31) and established Haran. They already had a moon cult established there.    But then that was a very long long time ago 903 years earlier than the days of Nebuchadnezzar.  Only Egypt would remember such migrations.

                         Pharaoh  Ahmose of Egypt

The new king of Egypt, Kamose, the last king of the 17th dynasty, ruled over Egypt only for 5 years. However, in this short period, he was able to defeat the Hyksos until he reached their capital in the Delta. Kamose also took control of many other regions in Egypt including Al Bahariya Oasis and the Nubia. After his death, his brother, Ahmose, became the king of Egypt. Ahmose was in fact only 10 years old when he became the ruler of Egypt. Ahmose’s mother encouraged and motivated him to train on fighting. When he was 19 years old, his men were able to find a letter written from the King of the Hyksos to the rulers of Nubia to begin moving towards Thebes and attack it. This motivated Ahmose to begin a huge military campaign against the Hyksos.

Babylon, known for its hanging gardens...

All return to Babylon, thought Abram, as his name had been, and was from Ur of the Chaldees tribes.  They had moved into Ur with the natives already living there.

By 538 BCE, some Jews had returned to Jerusalem after this 70 year hiatus. This means that only the oldest of the lot had been there as wee children, while the rest had never seen it or lived there earlier.  They were taking quite a chance as they had no idea what conditions they would find, and here they were in Babylon, all comfortable and cozy.   Babylon was the city of civilization, such as it was, in those days.  It was developed, organized and said to be beautiful, and probably was, but compared to what?

The earliest Jews were in Rome was in 139 BCE. The traditional date for the founding of Rome is April 21st, 753 BC. Capitoline Wolf suckles the infant twins Romulus and Remus. The traditional date for the founding of the greatest city of the Western world was the product of guesswork by Roman writers of the late centuries BC, working backwards from their own time.  Jews had wound up in Rome that early from the close relationship Judea had with Rome from some trading, intermittent wars, and  Jewish slaves in Rome.

Ancient Babylon or Shinar in Bible, ziggurat in background...with Babylonia also referred to as land of the Kasdim (Chaldees)...meaning people of Abraham's line from Ur, no doubt..

It was Cyrus II, king of Persia, who had granted permission to the exiles of Judah living in Babylon to return to their homeland and rebuild the Temple. (Ezra 1:1-44);  (II Chron.36:22-23) The Jewish exiles in return regarded Cyrus as a Divine agent. (Is 44:28:45:1). He had delivered an enlightened policy towards his subject people by allowing them to return home if so desired.

When in Babylon, they maintained their national spirit and religious identity. Elders supervised the Jewish communities, and Ezekiel was one of several prophets who kept alive the hope of one day returning home. This was possibly also the period when synagogues were first established, for the Jews observed the Sabbath and religious holidays, practiced circumcision, and substituted prayers for former ritual sacrifices in the Temple. The degree to which the Jews looked upon Cyrus the Great as their benefactor and a servant of their God is reflected at several points in the Hebrew Bible—e.g., at Isaiah 45:1–3, where he is actually called God’s anointed.

In the story of Esther, Cyrus is also inferred to be Esther's son or grandson.  Esther had married King Ahasuerus according to the Megillat Esther, though his name, Ahasuerus is not found in Persian records, written before 330 BCE, so that must be the Habiru name.

The kings of the older line were Cyrus I, Cambyses I, Cyrus II (the Great), and Cambyses II. After the death of Cambyses II (522 bce) the junior line came to the throne with Darius I. The dynasty became extinct with the death of Darius III, following his defeat (330 bce) by Alexander the Great. Darius I reigned from 522-486 BCE and had inherited the throne of Cyrus.  At the beginning of his reign, he permitted Prince Zerubbabel and the Jews who had returned to Jerusalem to resume reconstruction of the Temple.

Zerubbabel displays a plan of Jerusalem to Cyrus the Great by Jacob van Loo.

Zerubbabel (480 BCE) was the grandson of King Jehoiachin (598-597 BCE) of Judah, son of King Jehoiakim of Judah.  He sat on the throne at age 18 during the Babylonian siege of Jerusalem and reigned for only 3 months and 10 days before capitulating to Nebuchadnezzar.  then he was taken to exile in Babylonia, remaining in detention until the accession of Evil-Merodach in 561 BCE when he was released (II Kings 24-25) (II Chron.. 36:8-10).  Official Babylonian records relating to his captivity have been recovered.

The rebuilding of the Temple of Solomon-2nd Temple

About 60 years after Zerubbabel had led his people back to Jerusalem from Babylonia, Ezra,  a Cohen, of the priestly family of Zadok who was working as a scribe in Babylon for the Persian government,  heard terrible reports about the returned Jews in Jerusalem in that they had lost the spirit of Judaism.  So he decided to lead another party back to Jerusalem who would firmly establish the Mosaic law.

In 458 BCE he received the permission from Artaxerxes I of Persia (could this be Ahasueros?)  and went to Jerusalem with 1,754 returning exiles.  Ezra together with Nehemiah, cupbearer to King Artaxerxes,  who became governor of Judah, persuaded the people to 1. keep the Torah, 2. to observe the Sabbath and the 3. sabbatical year, to 4. pay their Temple dues, and to 5. reject intermarriage with gentiles by 444 BCE. It was King Artaxerxes who appointed Nehemiah governor over Judah in 444 BCE.

Nehemiah had organized the builders, the repair of its walls--an activity that was completed in 52 days despite interference by neighboring peoples.  He then devoted himself to social reforms with Ezra.   including cancellation of debts owed by the poor.  the leaders of the people had to pledge themselves to maintain the Temple regulations and pay their tithes.

The security of Jerusalem was ensured by arranging for 1/10th of the people to live there.  After 12 years, Nehemiah returned to Susa, Persia but later returned to Jerusalem to renew his position.  In 433-432 BCE he took steps against mixed marriages, in conjunction with Ezra.  His work was decisive in the rebuilding of Judah.  Nehemiah's memoirs form the basis of the biblical Book of Nehemiah-which is a continuation of the Book of Ezra in the Hagiographa.
Iraqi Jew kissing Mezuzah holding Deut.6:4-9 and 11:13-21 of parchment scroll beside the door on the right side, custom of all Jews everywhere.  The purpose is to remind us that all man's material possessions are the gift of heaven.

The estimated 80,000 Jews who remained in Babylon – Iraq – after the return to Zion formed what was to become one of the most ancient exile communities in the world, existing for some 2,500 years continuously until 1948.  As for the male line of  Iraqi Jewry, I see a lot of E's, J1 (Cohen gene) and Gs listed at FTDNA.

The Moshiach Messiah From King David's Line

Nadene Goldfoot

David, King of Israel was born in about 1030 BCE. in Bethlehem to Jesse and the daughter of Ithra.  Jesse's ancestors were:

King David:  Youngest son  of Jesse.  At age 25 he became the armor-bearer for King Saul.  His son was friend of King Saul's son, Jonathan.  David fought against the Philistines.

He married Saul's daughter, Michal.  Saul became very jealous of David, and it was so serious that it drove David to seek refuge with King of Gath-Achish.  David returned to Israel when Saul and his sons were killed in battle.  David was such a favored son of Israel that people still sing songs about him today;  Dah-vid-Melech Yisrael, khie, Khie, Vik ......

Judah, 4th  of the 12 sons of  Jacob.  From Judah came: Perez and Zerah (twins), Hezron, Ram or Arom, Amminadab, Nahshon, Boaz and Elimelach and Salma or Salmon, and Obed (father of Jesse).  I figure that they are all carrying the J1 haplotype of the Cohen line of Jews which came from Aaron, brother of Moses.

From Jesse, who was the grandson of Ruth and Boaz and lived in Bethleham,  came Abigail, Zeruiah, Eliab born about 1010 BCE, Shimea, Nethanel, Raddai, Ozem, and David-our King of Israel (1010-970 BCE) .  He moved to Moab for a time out of fear of Saul.

Israel's first king, King Saul, selected and blessed by the prophet, Samuel.  Saul was from the tribe of Benjamin and was the son of Kish.  Kish's father was Bela- Abiel of tribe of Benjamin.

  • 1 Samuel 9:1-3 Now there was a man of Benjamin, whose name was Kish, the son of Abiel, the son of Zeror, the son of Bechorath, the son of Aphiah, a Benjamite, a mighty man of power. 2 And he had a son, whose name was Saul, a choice young man, and a goodly: and there was not among the children of Israel a goodlier person than he: from his shoulders and upward he was higher than any of the people. 3 And the asses of Kish Saul's father were lost. And Kish said to Saul his son, Take now one of the servants with thee, and arise, go seek the asses.

David's 1st wife was Michal Eglah born about 1040 BCE.  .  Michal was Saul's youngest daughter.  She helped David escape Saul's jealousy.  Saul then married her to another man when he returned to Judah.  She died childless. Saul’s sons were Jonathan, Ishvi and Malki-Shua. The name of his older daughter was Merab, and that of the younger was Michal.  His wife’s name was Ahinoam daughter of Ahimaaz.

He later married Abigail-his 2nd wife who had Daniel Chileab 2nd son and Adonijah;   Bathsheba (Solomon's mother) and also mother of Shammua and Shobab, Maachah from Geshur who had 3rd child, Absalom,  Merab, and  Haggith (mother of Adonijah the Fourth Son).  Adonijah claimed the throne and had support from Joab and Abiathur, but didn't get it as Solomon did.  He later wanted to marry Abishag, David's concubine, and Solomon saw this as a political move to take the throne, so had him killed.  (1King 1-2).  Solomon took the throne before David had died.

Solomon's children were  Rehoboam, 1st king of Judah after Solomon died  It's said that Solomon had 1,000 wives in his harem and many more concubines.  Most of the people carrying DNA from Solomon must come come from his many wives.  One main wife was Naamah the Ammonite--mother of Rehoboam, the next king.  After he became king, the kingdom split into 2 with only Judah, Simeon and most of Benjamin remaining loyal to the Solomon line because of the tax business and working conditions of being forced labor.  Shishak of Egypt invaded at this weak time, seeing his opportunity.

The kings of Judah were first guided by Rehoboam (933-917 BCE) who carried out his father's tax wishes to finish the Temple.

Including Rehoboam, there are 347 years of rule over Judah by Solomon's descendants.  All these kings should be carrying the J1 haplogroup as their male descendants should also be carrying.

I must have left out many names of a king's children, but this gives us the idea.

Anyone declaring to be the Moshiach Messiah today should have J1, the Cohen gene.

The Messiah in Judaism (Hebrew: מָשִׁיחַ, romanized: māšīaḥ) is a savior and liberator figure in Jewish eschatology, who is believed to be the future redeemer of the Jewish people. The concept of messianism originated in Judaism, and in the Hebrew Bible a messiah is a king or High Priest of Israel traditionally anointed with holy anointing oil. However, messiahs were not exclusively Jewish, as the Hebrew Bible refers to Cyrus the Great, king of the first Persian empire, as a messiah for his decree to rebuild the Jerusalem Temple.

Cyrus II 529 BCE-was the king of Persia, ironically today's Iran. In 538 BCE he granted permission to the Jews in his country to return to Jerusalem and rebuild their Temple.  These Jewish exiles regarded him as a Divine agent.  It's also said that he is the son of Queen Esther, the Jewish Queen married to king Ahashueros of Persia.

In Jewish eschatology, the Messiah is a future Jewish king from the Davidic line, who is expected to be anointed with holy anointing oil and rule the Jewish people during the Messianic Age and world to come. The Messiah is often referred to as "King Messiah" (Hebrew: מלך משיח, romanized: melekh mashiach) or malka meshiḥa in Aramaic.

Jewish messianism gave birth to Christianity, which started as a Second Temple period messianic Jewish sect or religious movement.

Cyrus II Who Was Persia's King of the World, A Nice Guy, Creator of Human Rights

 Nadene Goldfoot

Cyrus  was born about 589 BCE, II died in 529 BCE in Shushan, Persia.  In the Bible, he is referred to in the Hebrew language as Koresh (כורש‎).

Darius the Great, the ninth king of the dynasty, traces his ancestry to him, declaring "for this reason we are called Achaemenids". According to Jewish records, Darius I(name of 3 kings of ancient Persia) reigned from 522-486 BCE) inherited the throne of Cyrus.  At the beginning of his reign, he permitted Zerubbabel and the Jews who had returned to Jerusalem to resume reconstruction of the Temple.

Cyrus II, King of Persia, thought he truly was the king of the world.  He had many conquests, so of course he would have thought that.  He overran the Babylonian Empire, including Palestine, and that in itself was one huge and important empire.  The empire created by Cyrus was the largest the world had yet seen.

                      Working on rebuilding the Temple

He kept an enlightened policy towards his subject peoples and in 538 BCE,  granted permission to the exiles of Judah in Babylon to return to their homeland and rebuild the Temple.  This is recorded in the Bible under Ezra 1:1-44;  and in II Chron. 36:22-23. The Edict of Restoration, a proclamation attested by a cylinder seal in which Cyrus authorized and encouraged the return of the Israelites to the Land of Israel following his conquest of the Neo-Babylonian Empire, is described in the Bible and likewise left a lasting legacy on the Jewish religion due to his role in ending the Babylonian captivity and facilitating the Jewish return to Zion. According to Isaiah 45:1 of the Hebrew Bible, God anointed Cyrus for this task, even referring to him as a messiah (lit. 'anointed one'); Cyrus is the only non-Jewish figure in the Bible to be revered in this capacity.

How the Ayatollah's have taken Persia's history and turned it around 180 degrees to be the 2nd worst on the face of the earth after Nazism is such a horrible crime. Today, Iran's citizens have had enough of it and are rebelling. Cyrus must be turning over in his grave.

Cyrus is also recognized for his achievements in human rights, politics, and military strategy, as well as his influence on both Eastern and Western civilizations. We could easily say he was the Father of Human Rights.   The Achaemenid influence in the ancient world would eventually extend as far as Athens, where upper-class Athenians adopted aspects of the culture of the ruling class of Achaemenid Persia as their own. Having originated from Persis, roughly corresponding to the modern-day Fars Province of Iran, Cyrus has played a crucial role in defining the national identity of modern Iran (up to the time of the ousted Shah by the Ayatollahs).

He remains a cult figure amongst modern Iranians, with his tomb serving as a spot of reverence for millions of people. In the 1970s, the last Shah of Iran, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, identified Cyrus' famous proclamation inscribed onto the Cyrus Cylinder as the oldest-known declaration of human rights, and the Cylinder has since been popularized as such.

This view has been criticized by some Western historians as a misunderstanding of the Cylinder's generic nature as a traditional statement that new monarchs make at the beginning of their reign.

Cyrus ruled for about 30 years before he died in 529 BCE, possibly in his capital of Persepolis.  He was succeeded by his son, Cambyses II, who managed to conquer Egypt, Nubia and Cyrenaica during his short rule.

The Jewish exiles regarded Cyrus II as a divine agent for allowing them to return home after being taken in 597 and again in 586 BCE by the Babylonians, possibly thinking he was angelic.  Therefore, some Jews that returned home were the descendants of Jews that had been  gone for almost 60 years and others 48 years. Probably none of them except maybe the very oldest returnee had seen Jerusalem.  For this reason, there were Jews who hadn't wanted to leave Persia and didn't.

Was Cyrus trying to get rid of his Jewish population?  No, he was extending his own power and knowledge over Jerusalem in this way.  What did he know about it since that time span when the Babylonians had conquered Jerusalem through Nebuchadnezzar?  And before the Babylonians, it was  Sargon of the Assyrians in 721 BCE who had taken by force  27,290 Jews of the best quality from their homes back to Assyria.  The Jewish king Hosea of Israel in 726 BCE  had tried to stop Shalmaneser V's siege of Samaria but he had taken it.

For the next 2 centuries, both the mass of Jews in in Exile in Mesopotamia and in the homeland in Palestine were under Persian rule.  It was under Persian auspices that there took place the return from exile to Palestine which, however, continued to be a Persian province with some degree of local autonomy.  Persia ruled.

Moreover, the political unity of the Middle East under Persian rule made inevitable considerable movements of population from one part of this area to another which is important for population geneticists today to know about.

The Book of Esther describes Jews living throughout the 127 provinces of Persia's empire and describes them as being numerous and influential in the capital of Susa  (Shushan). In fact, Haman, the king Ahasuerus's chief minister, felt a lot of resentment towards Mordecai, a Jewish palace official.  Mordecai may have felt fairly important due to the fact that his niece, Esther, was married to the king and Haman had found out about that.  Haman's anti-Semitism carried him to the point of instigating an assassination of all Jews of the empire, and Esther heard about it as it had already started, told the king, and Haman and all his sons were hung.  Mordecai then became the king's chief minister.  Mordecai and Esther were of the Benjamite  tribe. They had tried to keep their Jewishness a secret as the king never knew until Esther told him of Haman's plot.  Haman had been spying on Mordecai.

I've been brought up thinking that Cyrus was the son of Esther and the king, making Darius also Jewish.  Ahasueros must be the Jewish name as one can't find that in the Persian history books of kings.

The Book of Ezra narrates a story of the first return of exiles in the first year of Cyrus, in which Cyrus proclaims: "All the kingdoms of the earth hath the LORD, the God of heaven, given me; and He hath charged me to build Him a house in Jerusalem, which is in Judah."(Ezra 1:2)

British historian Charles Freeman suggests that "In scope and extent his achievements [Cyrus] ranked far above that of the Macedonian king, Alexander, who was to demolish the [Achaemenid] empire in the 320s but fail to provide any stable alternative." Cyrus has been a personal hero to many people, including Thomas Jefferson, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, and David Ben-Gurion.

In 1948, many Jews moved to Israel.  Their numbers fell from 80,000 in 1978 to 20,000 in 1989.  Although the Jews were not persecuted (they said while being watched and heard) after the Khomeini revolution in 1978, many felt uncomfortable under the strict Islamic regime and left for Israel and the west.
