What's Best For US Member of the Tribe People--Democrats Or Republicans?

Nadene Goldfoot

Large company, Swift and Armour back in 1910

My father, back in 1940, taught me that the difference between the Democrats and the Republicans was that Republicans were for Big Business and Democrats were for the little businessman, and that he was a little businessman at the time.  He was comparing the conditions between Swift and Armour with his business, Lincoln Wholesale Meats on SW 3rd and Lincoln St, Portland, Oregon. Dad was born in  1908 in Portland.  Dad's beginnings in the business was in the kosher butcher shop a few doors away. Dad's business evenetually became the Silver Falls Meat Packing Co next door to Swift on Columbia Blvd.  I don't know if he was in the same league as Swift or not but I don't think he changed and was  true Democrat still.

That may have held water then but not now.  What does each represent?  I remember back in....only a few years ago, I think Obama days, that the Democrats left out Israel in their platform of helping nations.  That did it for me; I stepped out of their circle of friends.

Jews had been Democrats like my father for other reasons, too.  The glorified Franklin Delano Roosevelt for saving them in WWII, which he didn't.  How that rumor started, I'll never know, but he must have been president then, and was president longer than others from 1933 to 1945 when he died and it was told to us grade school children and we all cried and cried as we had never had any other president!  He was like a protecting shield, our father, taking care of us all.  What a day that was at school, a shockingly sad one.

Truman took the seat of our devotion as he was the next president, also a Democrat,  and lasted from 1945 to 1953.  He had a good work-partner who was Jewish and they got along extremely well.  That respect for each other carried over to Truman as president and of course he voted a YES for Israel to be recognized in the UN.  The United States was the first to do so, THE Power-House country setting an example for others.  Talk about a ness, a miracle was happening finally after 2,000 years of patience, for the Jews, and we were overcome with joy.  Israel was born on May 14, 1948 during his first term.

So far, the Democrats had our vote from 1933 to 1953; 20 years of satisfaction.  My mother voted for Dwight David Eisenhower.  My father must have plotzed but he didn't say one negative word within my ears.  He won and was president from 1953 to 1961;  2 terms with a Republican.

This was expressed by Haaretz that the Democrats proclaimed  an amendment by the party's left-wing flank offering a more critical approach toward Israel including conditioning military aid – rejected by a large majority, with 117 voting against it and 34 voting in favor. Their final result, however, expressed ironclad support for Israel.  I hear that rumbling from the left, however.  All was not supportive.

By the 2020 election with Donald Trump at the helm, the Democrats were said to betray Palestinians.  To betray is to promise something and then break that promise, isn't it?  Instead, they felt the Democrats gave the Israelis a pass. He did 2 important things for Israel, though which was looked upon as better than just a pass.  He actually kept the promise that many previous presidents had promised and didn't fulfill, chickening out.  He moved the US Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, Israel's capital, thereby recognizing that fact in the act as well;  2 acts in one decision.  The result was fine; no problem that was warned about. I feel that Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, had more to do with Trump's stand defending Israel than the platform.  It was in our corner, finally, that Israel had somebody on our side.

U.S. foreign policy has traditionally been relatively consistent between Democratic and Republican administrations. Key allies have always been other Western powers like the UK, France. Allies in the middle east were—and continue to remain—countries like Israel, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain.

Nevertheless, some differences can be seen based on the Obama administration's handling of relations with certain countries. For example, Israel and the U.S. have always been strong allies (Jews make up 2% of population). But relations between Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have been tense.  I remember Netanyahu and his entourage forced to use the back door at the White House.  " Per NPR, "One [Israeli] commentator described the Obama administration as treating the Israeli leader with 'swinish contempt'."

A major contributor to this tension has been the Obama administration's Iran policy. The U.S. tightened sanctions on Iran in Obama's first term, but negotiated a deal in the second term that allowed international inspections of Iranian nuclear facilities. The U.S. and Iran also found common ground against the threat from ISIS. This rapprochement has irked Iran's traditional rival Israel, even though for all practical purposes Israel and the U.S. remain staunch allies.

Republicans in Congress opposed the Iran deal and the easing of sanctions against Iran. They also invited Netanyahu to deliver a speech against the deal and I watched as most Democrats walked out on his UN speech.    Well, that's all I needed.

                                           DeSantis

Trump is running again.  Enough said.  He lost my vote for the way he ended his term in office.  Florida's governor has had an extremely good education through Yale and Harvard but not much has sunk in.  He's trying to please whatever group comes to his mind.  Ronald Dion DeSantis (/dəˈsæntɪs/; born September 14, 1978) is an American politician and former military officer serving as the 46th governor of Florida since 2019. A member of the Republican Party, DeSantis represented Florida's 6th congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives from 2013 to 2018.    There's a few stands he has taken that are good, but most have taken a radical turn from logical thinking in the act of winning votes. You can't tell what they really believe in.  You have to analyze who they hang out with, instead and the material he reads.  It's George Santos of the House Representatives that's rather meshugana, caught in telling so many lies, luckily not running for President.

Many Americans cannot understand Netanyahu's latest position on restructuring their Judicial system.  Neither did many Israelis themselves, but he has a handle on it and a reason for his doing so.  NPR commented that: Netanyahu's government thinks the Supreme Court is too liberal and blocks policies promoted by ultranationalist and ultra-Orthodox politicians. (My comment is it's a fight between left and right--Secular and Religious.)  Under pressure from protests, Netanyahu's coalition already tabled the most controversial part of the plan, which would give the ruling government the power to override the Supreme Court

The push for more control widely is seen as a preemptive step toward enacting a controversial legislative agenda. The government wants to pass laws prioritizing religion and nationalism, but the way things stand now, the courts likely would say such laws infringe on basic rights.  Note:  Israel is now 75 years old; and the USA at 75 was the year 1801.  Thomas Jefferson just took office and held it till 1809.

Giorgio Cafiero, CEO of Gulf States Analytics, told The New Arab, “We have seen certain Democrats take positions against Israel that were difficult to imagine US lawmakers taking not too long ago. There has certainly been a change in discourse”.

FiveThirtyEight reported that, since 2001, the number of Americans who sympathised more with Palestinians had increased to 26 percent from 16 percent. For Democrats, the number has risen from 18 percent to 38 percent.  But even among progressive Democrats, there are divisions on the positions that the Democrats should stake out regarding the party’s approach to Israel.

The Squad of 4 has grown into about a squad of 9 or more now.  They all take a stand against Israel.  It took Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.) on Wednesday of 2022 who slammed Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) for claiming that individuals cannot be considered progressive if they support Israel. Finally, someone spoke out!

She's a Republican, Nikki Haley, probably at the bottom of the list showing Trump and DeSantis.  She was governor of South Carolina.   Nimarata Nikki Haley (née Randhawa; born January 20, 1972, is 51 years old.

There's only one I can count on and that's Nikki Haley.  She was the defender of Israel at the UN and did an outstanding job.  She's a woman, her parents are immigrants-from India.  She's tough and she's brilliant.  How about another miracle and see her as the next president?  As a rule, my measuring yardstick has been that of Golda Meir for a woman, and I see Nicki's feet trying on her shoes.

One of her first proposals as a candidate was to call for candidates over the age of 75—which would include both Trump and Biden—to be required to take a competency test. This led CNN personality Don Lemon to say that Haley "isn't in her prime" and that a woman is "considered to be in her prime in her 20s and 30s and maybe 40s". The comments went viral and received widespread negative reactions, with many, including Haley herself, labeling his comments sexist. Lemon later apologized for the comments
