Being Genetically Left-Handed

 Nadene Goldfoot

Stenciled hands at the Cueva de las Manos in Argentina. Left hands make up over 90% of the artwork, demonstrating the prevalence of right-handedness.  Much cave art on walls are hands.

I'm genetically left-handed from a Jewish family.  My brother and I are both left-handed but our parents are both right-handed, so our mother and father must both be carrying the left-handed recessive gene.  Also, our paternal 1st cousin is also left-handed, and he was an only child.  His father, our father's brother, was right-handed.  We Jews are an endogamous people, so this shows how DNA is working.

A recent study has shown that a staggering 30% of Jewish people are left handed. This is a significantly higher percentage than the general population, where only 10-15% of people are left handed. The study did not examine the reasons behind this trend, but it is speculated that it could be due to the high percentage of Jewish people with genetic disorders or disabilities.

Moses was left-handed?  I didn't know.  Notice his left hand holding his stick?  Ah ha!!

This trend is especially interesting because in many cultures, left handedness is considered to be unlucky or even evil. In some parts of the world, left handed people are forced to use their right hand for everything, even if it is not their natural preference. In Judaism, however, left handedness is not seen as a negative trait. In fact, some of the most famous and respected Jewish figures were left handed, such as Moses, King David, and the prophet Elijah.
Despite the high percentage of left handed Jewish people, there is no definitive answer as to why this trend exists. However, it is clear that left handedness is not seen as a negative trait within Judaism, and that left handed Jewish people have made significant contributions to both their religion and culture.
King David giving his left hand being left-handed, Oh!

If both parents of a child are left-handed, there is only a 26% chance of that child being left-handed. A large study of twins from 25,732 families by Medland et al. (2006) indicates that the heritability of handedness is roughly 24%.

Prophet Elijah being intelligent and a lefty, slew the prophets of Baal.

Our intelligence is observed.  In his book Right-Hand, Left-Hand, Chris McManus of University College London argues that the proportion of left-handers is increasing, and that an above-average quota of high achievers have been left-handed. He says that left-handers' brains are structured in a way that increases their range of abilities, and that the genes that determine left-handedness also govern development of the brain's language centers.  Left-handed people differ from right-handers by only one IQ point, which is not noteworthy ...

Left-handers' brains are structured differently from right-handers' in ways that can allow them to process language, spatial relations and emotions in more diverse and potentially creative ways. Also, a slightly larger number of left-handers than right-handers are especially gifted in music and math. A study of musicians in professional orchestras found a significantly greater proportion of talented left-handers, even among those who played instruments that seem designed for right-handers, such as violins. Similarly, studies of adolescents who took tests to assess mathematical giftedness found many more left-handers in the population.

In two studies, Diana Deutsch found that left-handers, particularly those with mixed hand preference, performed significantly better than right-handers in musical memory tasks. There are also handedness differences in perception of musical patterns. Left-handers as a group differ from right-handers, and are more heterogeneous than right-handers, in perception of certain stereo illusions, such as the octave illusion, the scale illusion, and the glissando illusion.

Only around 30% of left-handers are not left-hemisphere dominant for language. Some of those have reversed brain organisation, where the verbal processing takes place in the right-hemisphere and visuospatial processing is dominant to the left hemisphere. Others have more ambiguous bilateral organisation, where both hemispheres do parts of typically lateralised functions. When tasks investigating lateralisation are averaged across a group of left-handers, the overall effect is that left-handers show the same pattern of data as right-handers, but with a reduced asymmetry. This finding is likely due to the small proportion of left-handers who have atypical brain organisation.

Michael Vick, a left-handed American football quarterback, winds up to throw the ball to his teammate.   left-handers have been found to have an advantage in fighting and competitive, interactive sports, which could have increased their reproductive success in ancestral populations. This is a list of notable left-handed quarterbacks who have played professionally or for a major college program. In gridiron football, quarterbacks have been predominantly right-handed; only 33 left-handed quarterbacks have appeared in the National Football League (NFL). The rarity of left-handed NFL quarterbacks has been a topic of discussion and debate among players, coaches, and analysts.

Left-handed quarterbacks were relatively prominent in the NFL between the 1970s and the 2000s, but became mostly absent from the league after 2010. The most successful have been Pro Football Hall of Fame inductees Steve Young and Ken Stabler, 1988 Most Valuable Player Boomer Esiason, and Pro Bowl selections Frankie Albert, Mark Brunell, and Michael Vick. Tua Tagovailoa, who was drafted in 2020, is currently the NFL's only left-handed quarterback.

Interactive sports such as table tennis, badminton and cricket have an overrepresentation of left-handedness, while non-interactive sports such as swimming show no overrepresentation. Smaller physical distance between participants increases the overrepresentation. In fencing, about half the participants are left-handed. The term southpaw is sometimes used to refer to a left-handed individual, especially in baseball and boxing.studies suggest that right handed male athletes tend to be statistically taller and heavier than left handed ones.

  • However, left-handed people have an advantage in sports that involves aiming at a target in an area of an opponent's control, as their opponents are more accustomed to the right-handed majority. As a result, they are over-represented in baseball, tennis, fencing, cricket, boxing, and mixed martial arts (MMA).

Adam Levine is an American musician, best recognized as being the lead singer in pop-rock band Maroon 5. He is also known for being a long-serving coach on reality talent show The Voice, and has also dabbled in acting, having appeared in shows such as American Horror Story. In addition, Adam also owns his own record label, fragrance line, and menswear range. Busy guy!  Levine's father and maternal grandfather were Jewish, while his maternal grandmother was a Protestant. Levine considers himself Jewish.

Our health was observed.  Studies have found a positive correlation between left-handedness and several specific physical and mental disorders and health problems. For example:

Lower-birth-weight and complications at birth are positively correlated with left-handedness.

How about left-handed psychologists for those disorders listed below:  As child educational psychologist, author, and former UCLA associate professor Charlotte Reznick, PhD (who is left-handed herself) explains, this fragment of the population sees the world through a unique lens. “When we’re left-handed, our right brains are usually dominant, and that’s where creativity and intuition are centered. So it’s often easier for us to be creative than logical. And our brains more easily use both sides of the brain at once, so we have the advantage of also being more flexible in our thinking,” she explains.  One way to look at the contrast between lefties and righties, according to psychologist Yvonne Thomas, PhD, is how they approach problem solving. While those on the right might apply logical solutions to an issue, she explains that lefties have the innate ability to come up with several options, as opposed to just one black-and-white route.

A variety of neuropsychiatric and developmental disorders like autism spectrum disorders, depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and alcoholism have been associated with left- and mixed-handedness.

A 2012 study showed that nearly 40% of children with cerebral palsy were left-handed, while another study demonstrated that left-handedness was associated with a 62% increased risk of Parkinson's disease in women, but not in men. Another study suggests that the risk of developing multiple sclerosis increases for left-handed women, but the effect is unknown for men at this point.

Left-handed women may have a higher risk of breast cancer than right-handed women and the effect is greater in post-menopausal women.

At least one study maintains that left-handers are more likely to suffer from heart disease, and are more likely to have reduced longevity from cardiovascular causes.

Left-handers may be more likely to suffer bone fractures.

One systematic review concluded: "Left-handers showed no systematic tendency to suffer from disorders of the immune system".

As handedness is a highly heritable trait associated with various medical conditions, and because many of these conditions could have presented a Darwinian fitness challenge in ancestral populations, this indicates left-handedness may have previously been rarer than it currently is, due to natural selection. However, on average,

In a 2014 study published by the National Bureau of Economic Research, Harvard economist Joshua Goodman finds that left-handed people earn 10 to 12 percent less over the course of their lives than right-handed people. Goodman attributes this disparity to higher rates of emotional and behavioral problems in left-handed people.

Two theoretical single-gene models have been proposed to explain the patterns of inheritance of handedness, by Marian Annett of the University of Leicester, and by Chris McManus of UCL.  However, growing evidence from linkage and genome-wide association studies suggests that genetic variance in handedness cannot be explained by a single genetic locus. From these studies, McManus et al. now conclude that handedness is polygenic and estimate that at least 40 loci contribute to the trait.Brandler et al. performed a genome-wide association study for a measure of relative hand skill and found that genes involved in the determination of left-right asymmetry in the body play a key role in handedness. Brandler and Paracchini suggest the same mechanisms that determine left-right asymmetry in the body (e.g. nodal signaling and ciliogenesis) also play a role in the development of brain asymmetry (handedness being a reflection of brain asymmetry for motor function).

In 2019, Wiberg et al. performed a genome-wide association study and found that handedness was significantly associated with four loci, three of them in genes encoding proteins involved in brain development.

  • Researchers still don’t understand why around 10 per cent of the population turn out to be left-handed.
  • Most children have a preference for using one hand or the other by the age of about 18 months, and are definitely right or left-handed by about the age of three.
  • If your child is naturally left-handed, don’t try to force them into using their right hand.  I was 6 years old, a 1st grader in 1940.  Teachers did try to change my preferred left hand, but I couldn't stand it.  I, a little different than my brother and cousin, write as an upside down writer as well, with my left hand curled with my wrist being above my writing.
  • In a study from 1975 on 7688 children in US grades 1-6, Left handers comprised 9.6% of the sample, with 10.5% of male children and 8.7% of female children being left-handed. Handedness is often defined by one's writing hand, as it is fairly common for people to prefer to do some tasks with each hand. There are examples of true ambidexterity (equal preference of either hand), but it is rare—most people prefer using one hand for most purposes.

Most of the current research suggests that left-handedness has an epigenetic marker—a combination of genetics, biology and the environment.

Because the vast majority of the population is right-handed, many devices are designed for use by right-handed people, making their use by left-handed people more difficult. In many countries, left-handed people are or were required to write with their right hands. Left-handed people are also more prone to certain health problems. As the right hand is controlled by the left hemisphere (and the left hand is controlled by the right hemisphere) most people are, therefore right-handed. The theory depends on left-handed people having a reversed organisation. However, the majority of left-handers have been found to have left-hemisphere language dominance—just like right-handers.

Does this explain why I at age 18 was stumped when trying to hand priscilla-type sheer curtains with a ruffle on one side and not the other?  I couldn't decide where the ruffle side should be and hung them incorrectly with ruffle on the outside along the wall and not the glass pane.  When my right-handed mother came over and saw my window, she immediately changed it for me.  I was so embarrassed!  Otherwise, I'm quite intelligent.
Stewart was born Jonathan Stuart Leibowitz at Doctors Hospital in New York City's Upper East Side to Marian (née Laskin), a teacher and later educational consultant, and Donald Leibowitz (1931–2013), an energy coordinator for the New Jersey Department of the Treasury. Stewart's family members are Ashkenazi Jewish immigrants to America from Poland, Ukraine, and Belarus. One of his grandfathers was born in Manzhouli (now part of China). He is the second of four sons, with older brother Lawrence, and younger brothers Dan and Matthew.  Notice mike is in his left hand.

In honor of International Left Handers Day on Aug. 13, Jon Stewart set out to determine if there’s anything sinister about being a Jewish lefty.

Famous Jewish left handers include, in no particular order, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Lenny Bruce, Fran Drescher, Danny Kaye, Jon Stewart, Paul Simon, Ehud Olmert, Benjamin Netanyahu, Harpo Marx, Marcel Marceau, George Burns, and, of course, Sandy Koufax.

Possible Messiahs To Appear 2021

Nadene Goldfoot

Aaron, brother of Moses
b:abt 1400 BCE

Our Messiah has to have the resume that fits all the requirements for one.  The first thing is to be a Cohen; descendant of Aaron, brother of Moses who was the priest.  From Aaron come men with J1 (Y haplotype), and most possibly a J-M267.  A J1 also includes many Muslims as well, not surprisingly, for Abram himself was the father of Ishmael who is traditionally father of the Arab people.  Our Messiah may or may not carry the surname of Cohen, however.  One needs a special DNA test.  For example, one of my family members has a different surname, but knew from his father that they were Cohens.  They served in the synagogue as Cohens, and late in life after taking a DNA test, found out that he was indeed a Cohen as the test proved.

Benjamin Netanyahu in 1967, at age 18

Benjamin Netanyahu was born in Tel Aviv 21st of October 1949-raised in Jerusalem and Philadelphia area
His mother was  Tzila (Cilia) Segal (1912–2000) who had been born in Petah Tikva in the Ottoman Empire's Mutasarrifate of Jerusalem, and a Warsaw-born father, Prof. Benzion Netanyahu (1910–2012).  He discovered via a DNA test that he is, in part, of Sephardi Jewish ancestry. "We are from a Lithuanian family who were descendants of the Vilna Gaon, and have Spanish roots." He was initially raised and educated in Jerusalem. He had changed his surname from Mileikowsky. His father was a rabbi. So Netanyahu is the
grandson of a rabbi and has both Sephardi and Ashkenazi genes, plus is
related to the very famous Gaon of Vilna.  It was his brother, Ido, who took

the test.  They've known their heritage since about 2016.
Rabbi Nathan Milikovsky Netanyahu
Update: Rabbi Nathan Milikovsky (1879-1935) a noted activist in Khovevei Tzion, the pre-political Zionist movement, was the paternal grandfather of Benyamin Netanyahu.  Nathan was born in the small Lithuanian village of Krevo to Tzvi Milikovsky, who claimed descent from the Gaon of Vilna, as in recorded by Tidhar: 186.  Benyamin's father has discussed this with author Chaim Freedman recalling  hearing his father state this and was a descendant.  Tzvi and his wife settled in Eretz Yisrael, but their tombstone inscriptions in Jerusalem did not assist in proving this with the Hebrew inscription.

PM Benyamin Netanyahu in 2018, at 69
Another requirement is to be a leader who has done many things for his people.  Netanyahu comes to my mind first.  Benjamin Netanyahu is an Israeli politician serving as Prime Minister of Israel since 2009, and previously from 1996 to 1999. Netanyahu is also the Chairman of the Likud – National Liberal Movement.  He is the best speaker I have ever heard with the right tone, beat, quality of voice, vocabulary, timing, and has the most pertinent things to say on a subject.  He speaks English with a vocabulary better than most Americans as well as Hebrew fluently.

He's been Prime Minister of Israel since 31st March, 2009 and is the first Sabra to become a Prime Minister.   Since December 2016, Netanyahu has been under investigation for corruption by Israeli police and prosecutors. On 21 November 2019, he was indicted on charges of breach of trust, bribery and fraud. Due to the indictment, Netanyahu is legally required to relinquish all of his ministry posts other than the prime minister position. He must spend time in the courtroom as well as at the Knesset while fighting COVID 19 which has hit so hard in Israel.  Rioters are outside his home demonstrating about all this.  "The Black Flags, one of the three main groups demonstrating against Netanyahu, signed a permit which would allow protesters to march through the city center at 10:00 p.m." This is not an easy time for him, nor has he ever been in an easy position.

Netanyahu and Obama

Netanyahu saw in Obama's 1st term as president in 2009 problems as the US president called for "daylight" between the USA and Israel and he pledged to isolate Israel diplomatically. This continues with the Democrats and Biden, as Biden has said he will undo everything that Trump has done for Israel.  Fact check shows Obama replying in 2009: " "Look at the past eight years," Obama said, according to the Post. "During those eight years, there was no space between us and Israel, and what did we get from that? When there is no daylight, Israel just sits on the sidelines, and that erodes our credibility with the Arab states."  Obama seemingly didn't change.  On his last day in office he would not aid Israel by voting for her in the UN.

Netanyahu realized Israel could not depend on the USA only so set about to strengthen relationships all over the world which he did with China, India, Japan, and Russia who is so important being they are in Syria and are supporting Iranians who want to destroy Israel.  He has been working with the anti-Semitic eastern European countries, South America, Africa and Asia, along with the Arab world.
Gaon of Vilna
Netanyahu is possibly on my genealogy tree, which is his mother's maiden name.   I have a Segal from Minnesota where she lived.  This is not surprising as we are an endogamous people, and I find I am related to many who also share my interest in our family history and have tested.

Bibi's Philadelphia, Pennsylvania high school picture.
After graduating from high school in 1967, Netanyahu returned to Israel to enlist in the Israel Defense Forces. He trained as a combat soldier and served for five years in an elite special forces unit of the IDF, Sayeret Matkal. He took part in numerous cross-border assault raids during the 1967–70 War of Attrition, rising to become a team-leader in the unit. He was wounded in combat on multiple occasions. He was involved in many other missions, including the 1968 Israeli raid on Lebanon and the rescue of the hijacked Sabena Flight 571 in May 1972, in which he was shot in the shoulder.

I'm connected through Segal who married a Goldfus, my grandfather's surname in Lithuania.  Benyamin Netanyahu is related from his father's side to the Gaon of Vilna (Elijah ben Solomon Zalman 1720-1797), a very famous Lithuanian rabbi, leader of the Mitnaggedim which were not followers of the new Hasidim Movement.  Such families usually marry into other rabbinical families, and many of them happen to be Cohens.

Netanyahu has done so much for Israel, but now is facing political factions that are younger and not as captured by his aura as I am, so he is being sued for having accepted favors, etc, a terrible position to be in when thought of as a Messiah.  However, I think the scale of justice would find him quite acceptable.

Aaron Cohen b: February 28, 1976
Even Special Forces take time for evening prayers
if so inclined

Cohen is a common Jewish surname as there are many descendants of Aaron, first Cohen.  There is an Aaron Cohen who was born  to a Jewish family in Montreal, Quebec. His parents divorced when he was young and the family moved to Miami, where his mother believed she could advance her career as a screenwriter and producer.    She remarried to film producer Abby Mann, moving with Aaron and his sister to Beverly Hills.  Although raised in a non-religious household, he decided to study for his Bar Mitzvah and obtaining his mother's permission, moved to live with his father in Montreal for a year. He then spent the next several years shuttling between California, Canada, and Florida.  For secondary school he attended the Robert Land Academy, a military academy in Canada, and graduated Beverly Hills High School in 1995.

After high school, Cohen left Los Angeles for Israel, working on a kibbutz before enlisting in the Israel Defense Forces. After passing the consolidation, a demanding screening process for elite unit candidates, Cohen was one of the few non-Sabra volunteers accepted. (A Sabra is a person born in Israel)  In the mid-1990s, he became a member of the undercover Duvdevan Unit (Hebrew: ×“ובדבן‎; lit. cherry) of the IDF Commando Brigade, performing counter-terror operations targeting suspects among the Palestinian Arab population in the West Bank.  Aaron Cohen also worked for the Mossad in their covert black operations during his time serving in the Israeli Special Forces.  He has stated his belief in Zionism and has said his family has a strong Jewish identity.

Today he is an Israeli-American writer, director, actor, author and former Duvdevan Special Forces soldier specializing in counter-terrorism and best known for his international bestselling memoir Brotherhood of Warriors.

This is an example of who I think could be considered as Moshiah. There are 14
million Jews and many are Cohens, one of the prerequisites, the other, the Temple
being built that has not happened.
