The Number System in Abraham's Day

 Nadene Goldfoot

The artists used profiles just like Egyptians did, but so different.
Egyptian pharaoh, nose, ears, eyes different: was he a Hyksos?

Historians believe numbers and counting expanded beyond one around 4,000 B.C. which is 6,023 years ago,  in Sumeria, which was located in southern Mesopotamia in what is now southern Iraq. One of the first civilizations to feature cities that were centers of trade, the people of Sumeria needed new methods of counting and record-keeping.

Abraham of the Bible was born in the 2nd millennium BCE which was about 1948 BCE--which was 3,971 years ago-or rounded out to 4,000 years ago, way after Sumeria had their system. Abraham was from Ur, near the Euphrates River's emptying into the Persian Gulf.

Sexagesimal, also known as base 60 or sexagenary, is a numeral system with sixty as its base. It originated with the ancient Sumerians in the 3rd millennium BC, was passed down to the ancient Babylonians, and is still used—in a modified form—for measuring time, angles, and geographic coordinates.

The number 60, a superior highly composite number, has twelve factors, namely 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 10, 12, 15, 20, 30, and 60, of which 2, 3, and 5 are prime numbers. With so many factors, many fractions involving sexagesimal numbers are simplified. For example, one hour can be divided evenly into sections of 30 minutes, 20 minutes, 15 minutes, 12 minutes, 10 minutes, 6 minutes, 5 minutes, 4 minutes, 3 minutes, 2 minutes, and 1 minute. 60 is the smallest number that is divisible by every number from 1 to 6; that is, it is the lowest common multiple of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6.

The Hollywood female of 34-24-34 ratio evidently was admired then as it was in the 1940s.

Abraham was born in about 1948 BCE, probably just as the Akkadian Empire-formerly known as Assyrian was at its zenith in 2300 BCE.  They spoke a Semitic language.  Amurru was an Amorite kingdom established c. 2000 BCE, in a region spanning present-day western and north-western Syria and northern Lebanon.

Cuniforms found in Assyria, the 1st people to use Akkadian in writing.  Akkadian was spoken from the 4th millennium BCE and served as the language of diplomacy and commerce throughout the Near East until the Greek conquest.  Akkadian resembles Hebrew and Aramaic in structure, phonology and vocabulary but differs from them in the derived forms of its verbs, tenses, syntax and that its gutturals lost their distinctive character.

This map shows not only Sumer with the city of Ur, but it shows the Egyptian Nile River Delta of Goshen where Jacob and his family of 70 were given to reside .  Notice that the city of Jericho belonged to the Akkadian Empire at the time, with its wall going back to the Neolithic Period (5000 BCE), inhabited throughout Chalcolithic and Canaanite times until destroyed by Joshua (Josh.6).  It was revived during the reign of King Ahab about 870 BCE by Hiel the Bethelite (I Kings 16:34).

While new numbers and counting systems were being developed in Sumeria, so were the basics of arithmetic and writing. Keeping track of goods being traded required writing and basic addition and subtraction in addition to an expanded number and counting system.

Eventually, numbers were necessary for more than simply counting things. We can thank the ancient Egyptians for making the leap from using numbers to count to using them to measure things. Historians believe their use of numbers for measurement allowed the ancient Egyptians to build the pyramids and lay the foundation for advanced mathematics concepts, such as geometry.

The Egyptians had a base 10 system of hieroglyphs for numerals. This means that they had separate symbols for one unit, one ten, one hundred, one thousand, one ten thousand, one hundred thousand, and one million.

The following hieroglyphs were used to denote powers of ten:

Hindu-Arabic numerals, set of 10 symbols—1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 0—that represent numbers in the decimal number system. They originated in India in the 6th or 7th century and were introduced to Europe through the writings of Middle Eastern mathematicians, especially al-Khwarizmi and al-Kindi, about the 12th century.

Again, Jews used a lunar calendar dependent on the moon, while others today use the solar calendar dependent on the sun, making our times a little different.   By Jewish time, this is the year of 5783 covering 2022-2023 used by everyone else.  Jews use the Jewish calendar to determine Jewish holiday dates.   The Jewish calendar is the structure upon which all Jewish holidays are based. The High Holidays, Sukkot, Chanukah, Purim, Passover and Shavuot are always celebrated on their specific dates on the Jewish calendar. (For example, Rosh Hashanah is always celebrated on 1–2 Tishrei, and Passover always begins on 15 Nisan.)

My calendar shows April as Nisan/Iyar.  Snow fell in higher places this morning; unbelievable!  April is the month for showers.  That's so that May will bring flowers.

How Sumerians of Sumer Affected Our Mathematics and That of the Biblical Ages Part XII

 Nadene Goldfoot

Each row of people, and it goes on and on above, tells of a different situation about their culture.  Any classroom could do a mural this way; one row for themselves, next of their parents at work, next of the businesses in their neighborhood, on and on.

Sumer or Sumeria was where Abraham, father of the Jewish and Arab people, lived.  He lived in the city of Ur and was born in about 1948 BCE.  I'm interested in the large numbers given for the ages when people died, and why they were so large.

The numerical system based on 60 originated with the Sumerian civilisation, 4500 years ago. Sumer was located in what is now the southern part of Iraq. It is thought the number 60 is related to the origin of the number 12, which is the number of joints on 4 fingers of a hand, the thumb being free to count.

Five repeated hand counts delivers the number 60 which was used as the base for counting large numbers. Scholars of ancient history think that the finger-joint counting pioneered by the Sumerians explains why much of the ancient world based their numerical systems on 12 and multiples of 12, such as 24 and 60.

This system was handed down to the Babylonians, another ancient civilisation that emerged just north of Sumer on the banks of the Euphrates river about 600 years after the Sumerians.  The Babylonians were in the land of Shinar or of the Kasdim (Chaldees).  It's where the Tower of Babel was built, and the Flood story was found here.  Abraham was born in Ur here, then migrated to Canaan where he later fought the king of Shinar, Amraphael (Gen 14).

The Babylonians were very good mathematicians and inherited the sexagesimal (60) based counting system from the Sumerians which they used for a more elaborate counting system written in tables of symbols.

Enoch was the father of Methusela.  Enoch was 65 when Methusela was born.  Enoch lived 300 more years, fathering more children and then died at age 365.  Under base 12 he died at age 30 and 5 months, having fathered Methusela at age 5 and 5 months.  Base 12 was not used here.  Base 3 gives us that Enoch was 21 and 8 months when he had Methusela.  3 is a derivative of 12.  He died at age 121 and 8 months.  That's okay.

We come to the point where our ancestors found in the Torah had extremely out of this world long lives, with Methusela living for 969 years!  People read that and thought the rest of the history was just a legend.  However, divide this number by 12 and you get that Methusela died at age 80 years 9 months.

His son, Lamech, is said to have died at age 205.  Then his son, Noah, died at age 950 years, which divided by 12 is that he died at age 79 years 2 months.  Lamech is definitely out of order, here.  But using base 3, get Lamech dying at age 68 and 4 months.  Very reasonable.

Lamech was the father of Noah who lived for 950 years.  Divide this by 12 and he lived for 79 years 2 months.

It seems to be a hit or miss as to the ages as they are not following a pattern always, using base 3 or 12.  Of course this depended on when they died and  the method used at that moment.

Sumer or Sumeria was a region of Southern Babylonia named after a non-Semitic people which migrated there in prehistoric times and founded a series of city-states.  It's culture was the basis of Babylonian civilization and influenced the Semitic inhabitants of ACCAD (northern region of the valley between the Euphrates and the Tigris which contained Babylon, Sippar and other important cities)  to their north.  It's not specifically mentioned in the Bible but some early names such as Nimrod and Cush are mentioned. and connected with Sumerian tradition.

  • The Sumerians were a people living in Mesopotamia (Iraq) from the 27th-20th century BCE. Abraham was born in the 2nd millennium or about 1948 BCE.  The Sumerian Renaissance/Third Dynasty of Ur (2047-1940 BCE) saw the rulers Ur-Nammu and Shulgi, whose power extended into southern Assyria. However, the region was becoming more Semitic, and the Sumerian language became a religious language. Ur of the Chaldees or Ur of the Cassites was an ancient Babylonian city, home of Abraham and his father, Terah and Abraham's 2 brothers before they left it for Haran.  Evidence of the FLOOD was found here by archaeologist Sir Leonard Wooley,
6,000 years ago, the Sumerians of Ancient Mesopotamia were “given” a counting system that, over time, has revealed a coincidental numeric pattern found in geometry, harmonic frequencies, Earth cycles, time and space.
  • Sumerians invented or perfected many forms of technology, including the wheel, mathematics, and cuneiform script.  Sumerians invented or improved a wide range of technology, including the wheel, cuneiform script, arithmetic, geometry, irrigation, saws and other tools, sandals, chariots, harpoons, and beer.
  • The Sumerians, using their finger-joints to count the duodecimal (12) system, divided the day, sunrise to sunset, into 12 parts, so the combined day and night was divided into 24 parts. About 3500 years ago the Egyptian civilisation became the dominant civilisation and they embraced the duodecimal system (base 12).  (Hmm, they were using Abraham's descendants to build and they were the Israelites whose descendants were from Ur and that area.)
  • The Sumerian Renaissance ended with invasion by the Amorites, whose dynasty of Isin continued until 1700 BCE, at which point Mesopotamia (Iraq) came under Babylonian rule.
  • The Sumerians were eventually absorbed into the Akkadian/Babylonian population. Thus we have people carrying the genes of Semites and non-Semites.
  • They must have had an Einstein in their midst to have such involved geometry under their belt.  How else could they have stumbled onto that?  Check out youtube below.

ASSYRIANS AND SUMERIA : Their Plumbing and Possible Genetic History of Abraham Part IV on Ur

Nadene Goldfoot

2nd millennium BCE map of the states of Assyria, Babylonia, Elam, and Egypt.
Abraham was born in 1948 BCE of the 2nd millennium.  He was 75 years of age when he left Ur of the Chaldees (Kasdim) for Canaan on the Mediterranean Sea.  The Assyrian people, who were Semites, established an aggressive kingdom in the 20 century BCE, expanding rapidly in the 13th and 10th centuries.  The successes of Kings David and his son, Solomon, who fought against the Aramean states in Mesopotamia and Syria, probably contributed to Assyria's recovery.

Babylonia was known as the land of Shinar or of the Kasdim (Chaldees).  Genesis, 1st book in the Bible, refers to Babylonia as the cradle of humanity and as the scene of man's first revolt against G-d with the tower of Babel, a very high ziggurat.  The people did build structures with steps that went up as high as they could build them, but then so did the Egyptians with their pyramids. Babylonian literature includes Noah's story of the Flood.

Babylon was a walled city and they used canals for their croplands.  It was highly sophisticated, even back 4,000 years ago.  They had planted beautiful gardens and palm trees around their ziggurat. However, the people fought over other people's land all the time. " Here the warrior peoples of Assyria reigned with a fearsome hand over Sumerian and Babylonian culture. In their wake were produced systems of writing and communication, literature, a codified set of laws, a calendar and system for ascertaining time. Wheeled vehicles became common---and water management evolved into irrigation dams, drains and basins and personal bathrooms of their era's rich and famous."

When Abraham reached Canaan, he had to fight the king of Shinar, Amraphel, who was one of 5 kings who united to attack the rulers of Sodom and were defeated by Abraham  (Gen. 14). Shinar was at first thought to be Sumer, but thought now to be Shanhar, mentione in cuneiform documents.  This was either in  northern Mesopotamia or in the plain of Babylon.  Rulers of Shinar included Nimrod (Gen 10:10) and Amraphel (Gen. 14:1-9).  Exiles from Judah were banished there after the destruction of the 1st Temple by the Babylonians.  (Is.11:11). Babylon became the symbol of insolent pagan tyranny to our prophets who knew them.

Nebuchadnezzar II, the Babylonian king (604-561 BCE) inherited the Assyrian Empire by being victorious over the Assyrian-Egyptian alliance at Carchemish in 605 BCE.  Then he conquered all the lands from the Euphrates River to  the Egyptian frontier, including Judah.  After his conquest of Judah (597 BCE and 586 BCE), he exiled many Jews to Babylon.  This took place 1,351 years later after Abraham's birth.

In existence since 2900 B.C., the city of Babylon, under the rule of King Nebuchadnezzar (Circa 605-562 B.C.), had spread on both sides of the Euphrates River. It covered 500 acres. Many of the houses were 3 stories high whose flat roofs were buttressed with timbers packed with mud. For the poor who couldn't afford the luxury of wood, there were circular mud-brick huts supported by a center post, the walls packed with reeds and mud.

Budding plumbers worked their ingenuity with the only available resource in unlimited supply---clay mixed with finely-chopped straw. Copper was known to some extent from the beginning, while bronze was introduced about 2500 B.C. from outlying trade routes; sometimes it was alloyed with tin, sometimes with antimony. Some working in lead (anakum) was developing too at this time, as natives began to rivet, solder, hammer and anneal.

Most streets of Babylon ran parallel or at right angles to the river. They were very narrow in width, from 4-1/2 to 20 ft., and unpaved. They not only provided access to the houses, but served as depositories of rubbish, excrement and filth. Periodically the debris was covered with a layer of clay. In this fashion, as the level of the streets continually rose with the debris, it became necessary to build stairs to go down into the house until the houses were rebuilt at the new level.

Although clay tubs were supposedly reported 200 years earlier in the reign of Sargon the Great, an Assyrian king (721-705 B. C.), most sources agree that there were no bathtubs during this period of history, during the reign of King Nebuchadnezzar. Nebuchadnezzar's "bath" in all actuality was a shower, as slaves poured water over him as he washed with a soap made of ashes of certain plants and fats. Due to the texture of the concoction, his "shower" was probably like a detergent rinse.

There is some confusion over reports of privies at this period in history. Most likely a privy did develop which consisted of a hole in the floor with a cesspool underneath (a practice carried forward to modern times). But others report a more elaborate arrangement of six "toilets" in the palace of Sargon the Great. Those toilets had high seats which brought the latrine off the floor in the western style. Here, archaeologists say they have found connections to drains which discharged into a main sewer. According to their findings, the sewer was 3.28 feet high, and 164 feet long, vaulted over with baked bricks. It ran alongside the outer wall of the palace, beneath a pavement. The sewer sloped downward to allow the sewage to be washed down. Other bathrooms which could not be connected with the sewer system had individual cesspools.

Nebuchadnezzar's palace was built around five courtyards and included his private quarters and his harems. Two rooms behind the throne room contained circular wells. The space between the walls and the wells down to the water level were firmly packed with mud, asphalt and broken brick.

The king's well had three shafts close together---two were oblong, the center one square. Above the well was a wheel and an endless chain with pottery buckets attached, going up one oblong shaft and down the other. The center shaft was used as an inspection pit so a man could clear out the well or repair the machinery. The same type of well is still used today in the area, propelled by animals. In those ancient times, slaves were the primary source of power.

It is thought that men who sought an audience with their ruler performed a kind of ritual washing before entering his sacred presence. Drains have been found beneath the hard-tamped floor of an anteroom. They were made from pots whose bottoms had been knocked out, set against a row of bricks that had been set on edge to form the rim of a basin.

This shows a later period of the Assyrian Empire, so it continued to expand after Abraham's days from 1948 BCE to 1748 BCE.  Aram is Syria.  In Isaiah's period of Tiglath-Pileser II, king of Assyria (745-726 BCE) who conquered  Damascus, and forced King Menahem of Israel to pay him tribute;   Sargon, king of Assyria (721-712 BCE) who invaded northern Israel and expelled the best of the people, bringing them away as captives;   and Sennacherib, king of Assyria (705-681 BCE)son of Sargon II. Until 689 BCE he was constantly in wars with Elam and Babylon.  He led 2 campaigns against Judah (the Jews) and king Hezekiah surrendered in the 1st, but the 2nd one ended with Hezekiah not paying and the time was cut short by a plague that had hit.

Sumeria was a region, similar to a country but was part of Southern Babylonia named after a non-Semitic people, and Abraham, father of both the Jews and Arabs, was a Semite.  . These non-Semites had migrated to the Sumeria region in prehistoric times and founded a series of city-states.  It's culture was the basis of the Babylonian civilization and influenced the Semitic inhabitants of Akkad/ACCAD to their north.

Sumaria is not specifically mentioned in the Bible but some early names, such as Nimrod, and Cush,  are connected with Sumerian tradition.  Its importance in the Bible is that the city of Ur, home of Abraham and his father, Terah, lies in Sumer and is under their laws.  Ur of Kasdim, always with that tag on the name, in English as Ur of Chaldees.  That denoted the political ruling party of his day.

The Chaldeans of Chaldea (in Hebrew-Kasdim) were a Semitic tribe which migrated to Southern Babylonia and adopted the ancient Babylonian culture.  They gradually gained supremacy over the native inhabitants and gave their name to the entire area.

Attempts were made, initially under Merodach-Baladan, to overthrow Assyria, and they finally succeeded in the 7th century BCE under Nabopolassar and his son, Nebuchadnezzar, who established an empire extending from Assyria to the Egyptian border.

This was conquered by the Persians (Iran) in 539 BCE.  The fame of the Chaldeans as astrologers made the terms synonymous long after their empire had vanished.

Elam lie east of Babylonia which is the modern Khuzistan.  The capital was Susa, the same Shushan of the Book of Esther.  The Elamites were not Semites.  Semites were the branch of people with Shem, son of Noah, as their origin.  According to the Bible, the nation of Elam, Asshur, Arpachshad and Aram were branches from Shem.  It was Arpachshad who was father of Eber and ancestor of Abraham.

What would today's DNA testing say about all of this? .  "By utilizing high-resolution mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) markers and reanalyzing our previously published Y-chromosomal data, we have found a previously unexplored, genetic connection between Iranian populations and the Arabian Peninsula, likely the result of both ancient and recent gene flow. Furthermore, the regional distribution of mtDNA haplogroups J, I, U2 and U7 also provides evidence of barriers to gene flow posed by the two major Iranian deserts and the Zagros mountain range."  So we see we have geography acting as walls between peoples.

"Haplogroup J-M267 defined by the M267 SNP is in modern times most frequent in the Arabian Peninsula: Yemen (up to 76%), Saudi (up to 64%) (Alshamali 2009), Qatar (58%), and Dagestan (up to 56%). J-M267 is generally frequent among Arab Bedouins (62%), Ashkenazi Jews (20%) (Semino 2004), Algeria (up to 35%) (Semino 2004), Iraq (28%) (Semino 2004), Tunisia (up to 31%), Syria (up to 30%), Egypt (up to 20%) (Luis 2004), and the Sinai Peninsula.

To some extent, the frequency of Haplogroup J-M267 collapses at the borders of Arabic/Semitic-speaking territories with mainly non-Arabic/Semitic speaking territories, such as Turkey (9%), Iran (5%), Sunni Indian Muslims (2.3%) and Northern Indian Shia (11%) (Eaaswarkhanth 2009). Some figures above tend to be the larger ones obtained in some studies, while the smaller figures obtained in other studies are omitted. It is also highly frequent among Jews, especially the Kohanim line (46%) (Hammer 2009)."  These are the descendants of Aaron, the brother of Moses.

Chedorlaomer was the king of Elam who attacked  the kings of southern Canaan with 3 of his cohorts and was defeated by Abraham, who is turning out to be quite a leader in battles.

Jews may have lived in Elam from the period of the Babylonian Exile (Is.11:11).  Under Persian rule, their numbers were considerable being of importance several centuries later.
