Israeli Government Loses Shas

 Nadene Goldfoot

Haredi Jews studying Torah-our Written Law

As of May 21, 2025, approximately 80,000 Haredi (Ultra-Orthodox) men between the ages of 18 and 24 who are eligible for military service have not enlisted in the IDF.

The Shas party decides to exit the government following a meeting of its ruling Council of Torah Sages in Jerusalem, leaving Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu with a government. The party will, however, remain a part of Netanyahu’s coalition for now and is not pushing for elections.

Fellow Haredi party United Torah Judaism quit the coalition Monday night after being presented with a copy of a proposed enlistment bill prepared by Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee chairman Yuli Edelstein, which it argued violated the terms of a compromise that was reached by the two sides last month when an effort was being made to prevent the Haredi parties from toppling the government ahead of the war with Iran.

My favorite fact;  an Orthodox African Jew (Mizrachi) with J1 Y haplotype, kept coming to Israel to do his part in IDF;  a leader of his people, I believe a lawyer, has brought his family to Israel several years ago;  love to know his name now, I admire him so... May only the best come to him and his family.

Shas  is a Haredi religious political party in Israel. Founded in 1984 by Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, a former Israeli Sephardi chief rabbi, who remained its spiritual leader until his death in October 2013, it primarily represents the interests of Sephardic and Mizrahi Haredi Jews, those Jews of Hispanic and Middle Eastern origin after the 70 CE dispersion of Jerusalem's burning by the Romans.

Shas is the third-largest party in the Knesset as of 2024. Since 1984, it has been part of most governing coalitions, whether the ruling party was Labor or Likud.

This leaving the government comes from the newer expectation of religious Jews taking part as IDF in today's threatening world.  They say their students can't perform all the expectations of what they consider necessary as Jews if they enter the service.

United Torah Judaism  is a Haredi, religious conservative political alliance in Israel. The alliance, consisting of Agudat Yisrael and Degel HaTorah, was first formed in 1992, in order to maximize Ashkenazi Haredi representation in the Knesset. Despite the alliance splitting in 2004 over rabbinical differences, the parties reconciled in 2006, in order to prevent vote-wasting. In April 2019, the party achieved its highest number of seats ever, receiving eight seats.

Unlike similar religiously-oriented parties in Israel, like Shas, the National Religious Party–Religious Zionism, Otzma Yehudit, and Noam, UTJ is non-Zionist. Unlike some other Haredim, the party is notable for its usage of technology and electronic communication.

What impressed me long ago was that the Sephari allowed rice to be eaten during Passover but not for my Lithuanian Ashkenazi people.

Rabbi Elazar Shach, broke away from Agudat Yisrael when he concluded that the party was not representing enough the political interests of the Lithuanian Haredim. At that point, he split from them, and created the Degel HaTorah party for the "Lithuanian" Haredi Jews (also known as "Mitnagdim" by some).

All this coming from interpretation of our 2 books of information;  The Palestinian Talmud and the Babylonian Talmud.  So many rabbis working to understand what Moses wrote down and what he said, which is called the oral Torah.

The Talmuds, which include both the Jerusalem and Babylonian Talmuds, were written over a period of roughly six hundred years, from the first century CE to the sixth and seventh centuries CE. The Babylonian Talmud is the more well-known and widely studied version. It took several centuries after the Mishnah (core of the Oral Law) was finalized around 200 CE to be compiled, with the main body of the discussions finalized around 500 CE. The Jerusalem Talmud was finalized earlier, around 400 CE.

Moses ben Maimon (1135-1204)lived in Palestine in 1165, worked on the 613 laws, also a medical writer
According to Jewish tradition, the Torah contains 613 commandments (mitzvot). While the number 613 is mentioned in the Talmud, a definitive list was notably compiled and enumerated by Maimonides (Rabbi Moshe ben Maimon, also known as Rambam) in the 12th century. He listed and explained these commandments in his work Sefer Hamitzvot (Book of Commandments), which was intended as an introduction to his larger work, Mishneh Torah.
    • Liturgical and Halakhic Differences: Variations in Hebrew pronunciation, prayer melodies, and legal interpretations (halakha) also arose. Modern Times:  While intermarriage and globalization have led to some convergence, these three groups generally maintain their distinct identities.
    • Despite their differences, all Jewish communities share a common core of Jewish law, tradition, and faith.  Some individuals may identify with more than one group or have a blended background.

    •  Politically, they don't want to lose
    • their students.  They don't seem to see things like I do.  Israel is at a crux of extermination and could use these Jews somehow in IDF.
  • I remember that Saul and his children, and David were
  • fighters.  There are Orthodox Jews fighting in the IDF.  How
  • can these Torah scholars feel by not being a part of the
  • defense when we are in such a time?

  • This situation arises from a long-standing exemption for Ultra-Orthodox Jews from military service, an arrangement that has been a subject of ongoing debate and controversy in Israel. In June 2024, the Israeli Supreme Court ruled against the exemptions, stating that there was no legal basis to exempt Haredi men from the draft and mandating their enlistment.
  •  However, implementing this ruling has proven challenging,
  • and themajority of draft-eligible Haredi men remain unenlisted. This
  •  situation has
  • ignited public debate and political responses within Israel,
  • particularly amid the
  •  country's ongoing military challenges and the IDF's need for
  •  manpower.

Shas leader Aryeh Deri and the Complications He Comes With

 Nadene Goldfoot

Rabbi Aryeh Mahlouf Deri is one of the founders of the Shas political party (Originally a small ethnic political group, Shas is Israel's third-largest party in the Knesset, since the elections in March 2021. From 1984 to 2021, it almost always formed a part of the governing coalition, whether the ruling party was Labor or Likud; however, after the 2021 election, Shas joined the opposition)and Deri has served as Israel's Minister of the Interior, Minister of the Development of the Negev and Galilee, Minister of the Economy and as a member in the Security Cabinet of Israel.  As of November 15, 2022, Netanyahu is trying in a meeting between Deri and Smotrich  to convince Shas Chairman Aryeh Deri to give up the treasury portfolio, in favor of security. In that case:

Deri will be appointed Minister of Defense and Smotrich will be appointed Minister of Finance.  They are the leaders of their party so their names are first on the list for Netanyahu to make appointments.  Remember, their parties carried lots of seats needed.  (Nope, this has been turned down.  No coalition created as yet.)2:12pm on Monday-Oregon time.

In 1999, twenty-three years ago,  Deri was convicted of bribery, fraud, and breach of trust, and given a three-year jail sentence. Deri was convicted of taking $155,000 in bribes while serving as interior minister, and was given a three-year jail sentence in 2000. He was replaced by Eli Yishai. Due to good behavior, Deri was released from Maasiyahu Prison in 2002, after serving 22 months.  Below shows Deri's dates as minister of Interior.  The Ministry of Interior (Hebrew: משרד הפנים, Misrad HaPnim; Arabic: وزارة الداخلية) in the State of Israel is one of the government offices that is responsible for local government, citizenship and residency, identity cards, and student and entry visas. The current Minister is Ayelet Shaked.

Leader Isaac Herzog on Tuesday also released his February paycheck slip, revealing his gross monthly income of NIS 45,356, and a net monthly income of NIS 20,317.

In 2016, Netanyahu, PM of Israel, let everyone see his salary slip.  Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu earns a gross monthly salary of NIS 48,800 ($12,500), a pay slip posted on Twitter by the Prime Minister’s Office revealed on Tuesday. Out of that, he had to pay $3,200 towards his armored car.   From this, you can figure out how much the Minister of Interior might receive, if any.  With 9 children to feed and clothe, Deri still had no excuse for what he did.

At the end of 2012, ahead of the elections for the nineteenth Knesset, he returned to lead the Shas party. He was placed in the 2nd position, and was re-elected to the Knesset. In May 2013, he was re-appointed to the role of Shas chairman.

In December 2021, it was reported that Deri will resign from the Knesset as part of a plea deal for tax offences.  Now in 2022, he is part of the religious coalition of Benjamin Netanyahu, who has worked with him time and again.

Rabbi Aryeh Mahlouf Deri, important Israeli politician,  was born in Meknes, Morocco, to Esther (née Azougi) and Eliyahu Deri, so he's a Sephardi. His parents lived in one of the new wealthy districts of the city, and were influenced by French culture. His father owned a successful business of tailoring, and his family were traditional Jews, but not Orthodox.

At the age of 5, Deri was enrolled at Ozar Hatorah, a school that combined secular and Orthodox Jewish religious education. In 1968, at the age of 9, his family made Aliyah and settled in Bat Yam in Israel. Deri attended a religious boarding school in Hadera. In 1973, he began to study at Porat Yosef, a leading Sephardic yeshiva in Jerusalem. In May 1976, he transferred to Hebron Yeshiva, where he received his rabbinical ordination. In 1981, he married Yaffa Cohen.

In addition to Hebrew, Deri is fluent in Moroccan Arabic and French.  That's 4 languages, typical of so many Israelis.    His older brother, Yehuda Deri, is the Chief Rabbi and Av Beit Din of the city Be'er Sheva. He is also a member of The Chief Rabbinate Council. Another brother of Deri, Shlomo, is a lawyer.

After completing his yeshiva studies, Deri was appointed secretary of the Haredi settlement of Ma'ale Amos, and joined the Gush Etzion Regional Council. In 1983, he was appointed administrative manager of Lev Banim Yeshiva.

Deri is married, and has nine children. He lives in the Har Nof neighborhood of Jerusalem.  Har Nof (Hebrew: הר נוף, lit. scenic mountain) is a neighborhood on a hillside on the western boundary of Jerusalem with a population of 20,000 residents, primarily Orthodox Jews.

Netanyahu, however, has  given the Finance Ministry to Shas leader Aryeh Deri. But Deri might not be able to serve as minister, since he also served a prison sentence for tax evasion. The US administration is pressuring Netanyahu not to give Smotrich the Defense Ministry, although it's highly unlikely that Netanyahu would make Smotrich Defense Minister, who wants it badly,  under any circumstances.

Update 11/30/22--Likud and Religious Zionism met for hours last night and today, and are reportedly prepared to sign a coalition agreement later today. As part of the agreement Religious Zionism leader Smotrich and Shas leader Deri will share the finance and interior ministries, trading places after 2 years. Coalition agreements have still not be signed with Shas or United Torah Judaism. Soon-to-be Prime Minister Netanyahu is reportedly planning to ask President Herzog for a 14 day extension to form a government. He needs time to pass a law in the Knesset that would allow Shas leader Deri to serve as a minister despite the fact that he served prison time for tax evasion.

Mizrahi Rabbi Kaduri and Ashkenazi Rabbi Kanievsky Said Messiah's Appearance Imminent

Nadene Goldfoot
The shofar should sound on the 12th of September for the moshiach, but Jews will check out anyone who claims to be the Messiah on this day for sure.  We thought at one time that Bar Kochba was the Messiah and was wrong.  Jesus did not fit the requirements, either.  Many have made such claims, and nothing every changes.  We're waiting for an improvement in our lives, not something even worse happening.

It's strange that 2 illustrious rabbis have spoken about the Moshiach's arrival and have either given clues to a name or to the date of his arrival.  Usually such things aren't pinned down but are said to be near, or within the next 500 years or so.  Are we that close to the end times?  Well, with the possibility of Iran having nuclear weapons very soon, this does make that time close by, doesn't it.  We know the first place the Iranians plan to  hit will be Israel, and after that most likely will be the USA.  Iran has proclaimed this enough times already.

The Mizrahi Rabbi Yitzchak Kaduri, born  on September 7, 1898,   passed away on January 28, 2006 at age 108, which is an unheard of age today.  He was born in Baghdad to Rabbi Katchouri Dibabeth Aziza, a spice trader, and his wife.  Kaduri attended the Zilka Yeshiva in Baghdad and majored in Kabbala.  He moved to Palestine in 1923.  In 1934 he moved into the Old city of Jerusalem and was a student of Rabbi Yitzhak Luria.  He was the most renowned Mizrahi Haredi rabbi and kabbalist whose life was devoted to Torah study and prayer.

He became noted for his prophecy.  He said in 2004 that great tragedies in the world were foreseen by him.  After 2001's tragedy of the twin towers falling in New York City, it's not a surprise.  Two weeks after his pronouncement, the Indian Ocean earthquake happened with it's attending tsunami.  That shook up his followers and made believers out of them.

Netanyahu whispering in his ear in 1999.  Shas has been part of Likud's politics.
In 1996 at age 98, he became involved in support the Shas Political party in Israel.
  1. "Shas (Hebrew: ש״ס‎, an acronym for Shomrei Sfarad, lit. Sfarad's guards (of the Torah)) is an ultra-orthodox religious political party in Israel."  "Founded in 1984 under the leadership of Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, a former Israeli Sephardi chief rabbi, who remained its spiritual leader until his death in October 2013, it primarily represents the interests of Haredi Sephardic and Mizrahi Jews."
Rabbi Ovadia Yosef Sephardi  and Mizrachi chief rabbi, d: 2013. Shas today is the 7th largest party in Israel.
A friend of mine just died at age 98.  He was very healthy and danced up till the time of his death, but at this age, most of his time was spent sleeping when not dancing.  It's amazing that the rabbi  had the stamina to be even interested in Shas.   His thinking time was being spent thinking about the Moshiach.  Before his death in 2006, he said that he would tell who the moshiach was as he had met him in a dream.

"Sharon was considered the greatest field commander in Israel's history, and one of the country's greatest military strategists.   After his assault of the Sinai in the Six-Day War and his encirclement of the Egyptian Third Army in the Yom Kippur War, the Israeli public nicknamed him "The King of Israel".  He was Prime Minister from 2001 to 2006.
He then said that after Sharon died, it would become known, and  so Sharon died  on January 11, 2014, after being in a coma for 8 years after having a stroke.    The rabbi died earlier on January 28, 2006.  Had Sharon died when he had the stroke and had not been kept alive artificially, he would also have died in 2006.

Sharon did something he said his son had led him to do.  He moved all the Jews out of Gaza in the name of peace for the Palestinians to have.  Sharon, 85, served as Israel’s prime minister from 2001 to 2006 when he became incapacitated from a stroke on January 4, 2006, A week later, Rabbi Kaduri died.  During his tenure, Sharon had initiated a disengagement plan, during which thousands of Jews were deported from Gaza and northern Samaria – turning the once-fertile region over to Hamas-control, unknowingly since he had no idea the USA would insist on Democratic voting rights for them and they promptly "voted" in Hamas as their leadership instead of the supposed Abbas.  One wonders just how controlled this voting was and what voters were threatened with if they did not vote for Hamas.  After all, they were not used to such a freedom.
A “death curse” by a group of rabbis in Israel was issued against Sharon for this action.
.  The rabbi's  family was told to wait one year after he died to read his note.  The note was really just a handwritten scribbled note, and acronym possibly of 6 words.

If you take the first letter of each word,  the sentence says "Yarim Ha’Am Veyokhiakh Shedvaro Vetorato Omdim--translated as "He will lift the people and prove that his word and law are valid.  .  It spelled Yehosua.    I think that's stretching it a bit.  YHVSVO?  Is that what the rabbi intended to have people read?  How about Joshua?  The correct spelling is: yud, hay, vuv, shin ayin-5 letters as it is in the Torah יהושע.   Jesus is simply the Greek word for Joshua.  Let's not get fancy, here.  The Christians have gone wild over this, but the family has said it's a forgery and not something coming from Rabbi Kaduri. That is amazing since they have never paid attention to what any rabbi has said before.

I wonder what had happened to that note that had to wait for 9 years to be opened.  Surely something had been altered or replaced.  His son said that this was not his handwriting.  Had it been locked up in the safe in a vault where it could not be tampered with?  And where would the good rabbi have studied about Jesus, I ask? Or heard about him?   There is not a thing about Jesus in in the Talmud or Tanakh or any post-talmudic resources.  Jesus is only written about in the NEW TESTAMENT Gospels.  An analysis of the Gospels has shown that certain sections seem to reflect ideas and situations in the developing Christian Church rather than those of Jesus's own day.  Did the rabbi have bell ringers at his home, too that tried to convert him?  What was going on?  I know they certainly have come to my house.
Update:  Rabbi Tovia Singer has translated it as: "The nation will be raised up and it will become known that His word and the Torah stands."  He also disputes that the rabbi would point to Jesus as the Messiah.

Now we have another rabbi, an Ashkenazi, Rabbi Shmaryahu Yosef Chaim Kanievsky, saying that we will meet the moshiach on the 12th of September of this year.  He was born on January 8, 1928, so is now 87 years old.  Kanievsky was born  in Pinsk, Belarus, which was part of the "Pale of Settlement," land set aside owned by Catherine II of Russia where Jews were allowed to live.

His father was  Rabbi Yaakov Yisrael Kanievsky who was also known as the Steipler Gaon.  His mother was the Rebbitzen Miriam Karelitz, sister of Rabbi Avraham Yeshayahu Karelitz,  who was also known as the Chazon Ish.  An Ish means wife in Hebrew.  He married Batsheva, daughter of Rabbi Yosef Sholom Eliashiv who was the grandson of Rav Shlomo Elyashiv, the Leshem.  His wife's other grandfather was Rav Aryeh Levin.

Rav Kanievsky was a student at the Lomza Yeshiva during the 1948 Israeli War of Independence and served in the army temporarily as all men had to do.  He was assigned to stand guard on a large hill near Jaffa.

His wife died in 2011.  He lived in the very Orthodox section called Bnei Brak and receives thousands of visitors every year from Jews needing religious advice.  A nonprofit organization, Belev Echad, founded in 2011 in Israel is dedicated to help the sick and disabled children and adults.  Rabbi Kanievsky is their official rabbi and spiritual guide.  He is a posek, an authority on the law.  "Kanievsky is considered a leading authority in Haredi Jewish society.  He's really sticking his neck out when he has picked a date for the moshiach's appearance.  it has happened before with so many people to pick a date and not have it happen.

One of the latest was "Menachem Mendel Schneerson (1902–1994), the seventh Chabad Rabbi who tried to "prepare the way" for the Messiah. An unidentifiable number of his followers believe him to be the Messiah, though he himself never said this and actually scoffed at such claims which were made during his lifetime
