Israel's Need For Defense From The Beginning Part I

 Nadene Goldfoot

World War I, also known as the First World War or the Great War, began on July 28, 1914, and ended on November 11, 1918. It was a global conflict between two coalitions: the Allies and the Central Powers.  Leading Jews had been working on Ottoman Empire holdings of Palestine that were originally Israel to be again in their hands; especially land Romans had taken from them such as Jerusalem.

Israel was reconstituted on May 14, 1948 after Jerusalem was burned down by the Romans along with the 2nd Temple in 70 CE.  Almost 2,000 patient years had gone by, but many had kept praying all those years for it to be re-created again for its people in need.

It was faced with formidable problems.  Defense from attacks was the first consideration. It's long land frontiers made her particularly vulnerable to assault--and the enemy used either direct attack of infiltration.  Sabotage and murder originating mainly from the Gaza Strip and from Jordan were a constant nuisance, and did not stop despite Israel reprisal raids.

Against direct attack, immense efforts were made to build up and equip the armed forces (Tzeva  Haganah Le-Israel) Below. Haganah means Defense.  It was a clandestine organization for Jewish self-defense in Palestine as the Brits were not helping at all. (See the movie, EXODUS.).  It succeeded Ha-Shomer in 1920, the first, and existed until 1948 when its members were transferred to Tzeva Haganah Le-Israel.  The British Administration gave no protection to its Jewish population.  The Haganah combined an illegal organization with individual Jewish participation in the government's security forces and even had certain legal formations.

Haganah's efficiency was shown in the Sinai Campaign 1956, the Six Day War 1967, the Yom Kippur War 1973, etc.   the defeat of the Egyptian forces, the destruction of Egyptian bases, and the capture of large quantities of material on the 1st two occasions deferred the assault on Israel from 3 sides planned by President Nasser and gave Israel much needed breathing spaces.

When was the IDF created? The order to create the IDF was issued on May 26, 1948, and went into effect on May 31, 1948. Israel is again celebrated on May 14, 1948 for its re-birth.

Haganah also won Israel much popular sympathy throughout the world and opened up to shipping the Gulf of Elath twice blocked by Egypt.  However, Arab pressures---especially after 1973----led to considerable international isolation.
President Jimmy Carter shaking hands with Sadat and Israeli prime minister Menachem Begin at the signing of the Egyptian–Israeli Peace Treaty on the grounds of the White House, 1979

An important change occurred in 1977 with  President Sadat of Egypt's journey to Jerusalem and willingness to recognize the State of Israel.  This led to intensive negotiations culminating in the Camp David Agreements and the signing of a peace treaty between Israel and Egypt.
Oil painting I did of husband Danny Eskow now in Safed, Israel, an art center.  He's got his new huge prayer shawl, so different from small American ones.  He can put it over his head and meditate.  My painting style changed a lot as well; painting faster and freer. He also found an Israeli cousin, his father's 1ST cousin who started BOYS TOWN IN JERUSALEM!  The family had been from Russia and from there to Brooklyn, NY.
Here I am in Safed in 1981 with our red Fiat from Italy and our female German shepherd who flew with us.  We have the bottom floor apartment and can use the merepeset to hang wet clothes, my first apartment living.  I taught English at the Jr high across the street.  I have gone Dottee (scarf) and the elevation here is like Jerusalem.  This was winter. Dan was in the air force in the USA.  He has some physical problems but passed the test here anyway.

We made Aliyah in 1980.  In the 1980's Israel went through difficult periods in the international arena as a result of its invasion of Lebanon in 1982 and of the Palestinian uprising called an Intifada which started in 1987.  Then, world changes in the late 1980s brought new opportunities as both eastern Europe and the Black African countries, which had broken off relations after the Six-Day and Yom Kippur Wars, now resumed relationships with Israel.  Although Israel remained outside the fighting in the 1991 Gulf War, it was bombarded with Iraqi missiles which led to a reassessment of its military strategies.  later that year, peace talks with its Arab neighbors were initiated by the US.  Israel's population grew rapidly.

At its inception, Israel adopted a unique law conferring citizenship on every Jew immediately upon landing on Israeli soil.  Within the 1st 3 years, the Jewish population was doubled from 650,000 to 1,300,000 through mass immigration called Aliyah.  This was accompanied by severe economic difficulties that were overcome only to some extent after a prolonged struggle.
Avraham  Stern, known as Yair (b:1907 d: 1942) , who split in 1940 from the Irgun Tzevai Leumi saying that Britain must be fought and they refused to do so, so he formed another group-Lohame Herut Israel and they did some sabotage. They were the toughest group.   He was killed and then Yisrael Scheib (Eldad) and Shamir took over.  Stern was killed by British police while being arrested.
3rd cousin Stanley Goldfoot (born 1914 in South Africa, died 2006 in Jerusalem)  became Chief of Intelligence for the Stern Group, blamed for the bombing of the King David Hotel.
Yitzhak Jazarnitsky (Yitzhak Shamir) (b: 1915 in Poland ) took over Irgun Tzevai Leumi in 1937 leaving it in 1940.    He became Israel's 7th Prime Minister and served 2 terms, ((1983–1984, 1986–1992).).  Shamir joined the Revisionist Zionist Irgun paramilitary group led by Menachem Begin. During World War II the Irgun split over the question of whether to support the Axis Powers against the British Empire.  After the establishment of the Israeli state  Yitzhak Shamir was imprisoned by British authorities in 1941. A few months after Stern was killed by the British in 1942, Shamir and Eliyahu Giladi hid under a stack of mattresses in a warehouse of the detention camp at Mazra'a, and at night escaped through the barbed wire fences of the camp. Shamir became the leader of the Stern Gang, and, together with Giladi, Anshell Shpillman and Yehoshua Cohen, reorganized the movement into cells and trained its members.    Shamir served in Mossad between 1955 and 1965.

The Stern Group (Lohame Herut Israel) Fighters For the Freedom Of Israel, known as Lehi, or as British called them, The Stern Gang" after its founder, Avraham Stern.

Since the IDF's  creation, its guiding principles have been shaped by the country’s need to defend itself from its numerically superior neighbors. The primary element of this doctrine is the belief that Israel cannot afford to lose a single war. IDF planners believe that this goal can be attained only through a defensive strategy that utilizes the rapid mobilization of overwhelming force to take the war to the enemy. Because the Israeli army has a relatively small active-duty component—estimates in the early 21st century placed it at some 125,000 troops, of whom roughly two-thirds were conscripts—this mission could  be achieved only through the maintenance of a well-trained reserve force and active intelligence gathering. These human assets were supplemented with robust early warning systems, one of the world’s most advanced theater missile defense networks, and a mechanized force that included some 2,500 main battle tanks and more than 5,000 armored personnel carriers.

It could more accurately be categorized as a citizen militia supplemented by a small corps of career officers and active-duty conscripts. Military service is compulsory for Jews and Druze, both men and women, and for Circassian men.

Conscription deferments are available to students, and exemptions from service are granted to married women and women with children. Men undertaking religious studies, particularly those in the ultra-Orthodox Jewish community, were also exempt throughout most of Israel’s history, but in the 21st century the size of the community in proportion to the general population made the exemption highly controversial and politically polarizing. In 2023 the exemption did not have enough support in government for renewal and in 2024 conscription of ultra-Orthodox men began, although only a small fraction of the draftees reported for duty.

The period of active-duty conscription is 32 months for men and 24 months for women; this is followed by a decades-long period of compulsory reserve duty (to age 40).

Israel's Growth Defending Themselves AS Israel Defense Force (IDF)

 Nadene Goldfoot

A past dinner with American, Israel and Palestinian Flags-there is no Palestine as such as yet...no agreement of peace.  Gazan Palestinians still shoot rockets, mortars and missiles into Israel.

The picture shows when John Kerry was Secretary of State 2013 to 2017.  The Jerusalem Post had this to say about Kerry:  "Kerry might very well be telling the truth. But he would do well to reflect on why accusations surrounding his attempts to undermine Israel, not to mention the US, are completely plausible."  In other words, he did not favor Israel in his talks at all. Barack Hussein Obama II was then president of the USA.

Israel is called "Little Satan" by Iran, the country who is so aggressive in wanting to eliminate the State of Israel.  Because the USA has been Israel's big brother in helping her with President Harry S. Truman recognizing her first in the United Nations roll call, the USA is the Big Satan.

Aluf (General) Bar Kokhba held Jerusalem for 3 years, angering the Romans

Jews have the known valid and verified history of living in Judea and Samaria for the past 4,000 years except from 70 CE onwards for a period when the Romans, after burning down Jerusalem, forbade them from living there anymore.  One try at it was made by the Jewish General Bar Kokhba in 132 who took Jerusalem and kept it for the next 3 years before being overcome again by the Romans.  There were Jews living there who were not detected by the Romans as they were only interested in Jerusalem.  So we've had Jews who had never left Judah.

Dividing up the Ottoman Empire after WWI with Sykes-Picot Agreement of 1914-1916-before the war even ended of Britain, France and Russia, including Italy later, providing for complete chopping up with Upper Galilee under French, Hamran becoming French-protected Arab State, Haifa Bay to British control and central Palestine from Nazareth to Hebron an Anglo-French-Russian control.  Zionists heard about this by 1917 and it wasn't the deal they had made at all.  None of this chopping had any connection to biblical information.

They had agreed in the March 1915 Constantinople Agreement to give Russia Constantinople (Istanbul) and areas around it, which would provide access to the Mediterranean SeaFrance, meanwhile, had a number of economic investments and strategic relationships in Syria, especially in the area of Aleppo, while Britain wanted secure access to India through the Suez Canal and the Persian Gulf. It was out of a need to coordinate British and French interests in these regions that the Sykes-Picot Agreement was born.

The Ottoman Empire held much of the Middle East, Palestine in particular .  Throughout history, Palestine has been ruled by numerous groups, including the Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians, Greeks, Romans, Arabs, Fatimids, Seljuk Turks, Crusaders, Egyptians and Mamelukes. From about 1517 to 1917, the Ottoman Empire ruled much of the region.

It was from 1880 on that Jews started to return on a large scale in groups called Aliyote, and there were 5 such groups through the next years, the 1st major group of Aliyah in 1881.  (The historic novel, THE SETTLERS by Meyer Levin is a must to read).

WWI ended with the Ottoman Empire, who had been holding land for 400 years, losing as they tagged along with the German side-the Axis, and Paris was the city of making deals with heads of state.  Prince/Emir Feisal was the friends with Chaim Weizmann and planned peaceful deals together.  But they were foiled by Haj Amin al-Husseini, Sherif of Jerusalem, who wanted to keep his important status-awarded to him through the British by a Jewish nobleman, mind you, so he instigated riots in 1929 against the Jewish people that included killing them in great enough numbers to cause the Jews to start protecting themselves.

At the end of WWI in 1917, the British received a 30 year mandate to rule over Palestine.  They were told by the League of Nations and the United Nations to help the Jews create a Jewish Homeland out of it.  They didn't.  Instead they helped the Arabs take over the land.  They still evidently held anti-Semitism against the Jews for religious reasons that did not touch upon the Arabs who had oil in Saudi Arabia just discovered, changing the dimensions of their energies.  Whoops--the Arabs were now most important and whoever studied the Old Testament anyway?  Not these Brits.

The Haganah (Defense in Hebrew) was a clandestine organization set up by the Jews in English- controlled Palestine who were holding the 30 year mandate since the English just let these attacks happen.  They succeeded their Ha-Shomer (The Watchmen founded in 1909)  group in 1920 who had been protecting roaming Arabs attacking Jewish settlements.  Things were getting worse against the Jews so the Haganah divided their efforts by 1931.     Some of the groups reunited with the Haganah in 1936 and formed the Irgun Tzevai Leumi group.  There were great disturbances from 1936-1939 and the Supernumerary  Police Force (noterim) of 120,000 was established in 1939, recruited by Haganah out of desperation.

                                         Palmah soldier

Out of Haganah came the group, the Palmah, the striking arm or peluggot mahatz in May 1941 during WWII, active till May 1948, like combat soldiers.

Abraham Stern  known as Yair b: 1907 in Suwalki Lithuania/Poland where my paternal grandmother, Zlata Jermulowsky was from and -d: in 1942 in Palestine)  at age 35; lived in my father's day of 1908-1959. . During the First World War his mother fled the Germans with him and his brother David. They found refuge with her sister in Russia. When he was separated from his mother the 13-year-old Avraham earned his keep by carrying river water in Siberia. Eventually, he stayed with an uncle in St. Petersburg before walking home to Poland. At the age of 18, in 1925, Stern emigrated on his own to Mandatory Palestine.  That's the same age that Stanley Goldfoot immigrated from South Africa to Palestine.

Abraham Stern  was the leader, and had left the group  in 1931 of Irgun Tsevai Leumi (IZL) and they smuggled weapons into Palestine when he was their leader because it refused to continue anti-British activities in Palestine during WWII.  He formed an underground organization later known as Lohame Herut Israel  of which the British just called it the Stern Gang.  They carried out sabotage.  Stern was said to be killed while arrested by the British-the British Criminal Investigation (CID) on February 12, 1942.  (Stanley told me to please just call it the Stern Group).  They weren't a gang.

Lohame Herut Yisrael-Lehi- (Fighters for the Freedom of Israel), called The Stern Group by the British for its founder, Abraham Stern,  was created out of them and my cousin, Stanley Goldfoot, became their chief of Intelligence. The Stern group  had split in 1940  from Lehi  feeling that Britain also much be fought as well as the Germans.  Stern died during  battles when he was arrested.  The operational commander was Yitzhak Jazarnitsky (Shamir).  They had about 300 men.  Murders attributed to this revolutionary group were Lord Moyne-the British Minister in the Middle East in 1944;  Count Bernadotte in 1948, and an attack on the main Hotel, the King David Hotel On July 22, 1946, the Irgun Zvai Le'umi (National Military Organization) a Jewish terrorist organization opposed to Britain's continued rule of Palestine, bombed Jerusalem's King David Hotel. It's where I met Stanley Goldfoot in 1980-81.

In 1948 Palmah people were sent throughout Palestinian labor villages and towns where they worked and trained.  In 1942 Palmah had a few hundred.  By 1945 they had 2,500.  By 1948, they had 5,500 people.  From 1945 to 1947  they concentrated on the struggle against the British by defending village and town projects and by armed actions against the British.

Of course, then Israel was created on May 14, 1948, and one member became member of  the 1st Knesset in 1949 to 1951 before disbanding for the IDF (Israel Defense Force) to be formed. It actually was in November 1948 that General Dori, Chief of the Israel General Staff, ordered the disbanding of the Palmah.  75 Palmah members had died  in action in 1945 to 1947  and 1,000 more from 1947 to 1948.

Being a JEWISH Defense Force, these soldiers have ETHICS as their major consideration.  In fact, that's what Judaism is all about in the first place;  not  about what happens to our soul when we die like the Christians but how we treat others while we live.  The world was a pretty rotten place 4,000 years ago and people knew nothing about ethics which is why Moses was directed to teach about it to his 603,550 Egyptian slaves that he had freed.

The sad thing is that there are still many like the Iranians who do not share our ethics and want to knock us out completely and take over our land that we have helped come back to life after becoming swamps, desert and weeds and mosquito-filled, uninhabited with only by a few fleeting Arabs on camels.

  • While Israel does all it can to protect Israelis during war, Hamas and other terrorist groups use Palestinians as human shields. As a result, Palestinians tend to suffer far more civilian casualties than Israelis do. Some in the international community exploit this to make deeply misleading accusations about IDF “war crimes” and “disproportionate force”.

  • Proportionate force “cannot in any way be determined by considering the relative casualty figures between belligerents in a conflict.” Proportionality is determined by weighing the benefit of a strike against the potential harm to civilians. This can be extremely difficult to decide in the heat of battle.

  •  International law stipulates that not all attacks that cause civilian casualties are evidence of criminal misconduct. Attacks targeting legitimate military objectives that unintentionally result in civilian deaths or injuries are not war crimes.

  •  “Civilians were not intentionally targeted as a matter of policy [during Israel’s operations]” – Judge Richard Goldstone

  •  “The Israeli Defense Forces did more to safeguard the rights of civilians in a combat zone than any other army in the history of warfare.” – British Colonel (ret) Richard Kemp.

The Israel Defense Forces or IDF, alternatively referred to by the Hebrew-language acronym Tzahal, is the national military of the State of Israel. It consists of three service branches: the Israeli Ground Forces, the Israeli Air Force, and the Israeli Navy.

What's wrong with Iran?  Not long ago, they were called Persia.  They once tried to pull a Hitler on the Jews by a Haman who started to kill all Jews in their vast empire, but Queen Esther put a stop to that.  The land was ruled by Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi and were friends with Israel.

The Iranian Revolution, also known as the Islamic Revolution, was the revolution that transformed Iran from an absolute monarchy under Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi to an Islamic republic under Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, one of the leaders of the revolution and founder of the Islamic Republic. Its time span can be said to have begun in January 1978 with the first major demonstrations, and concluded with the approval of the new theocratic Constitution—whereby Ayatollah Khomeini became Supreme Leader of the country—in December 1979.

Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei attends a meeting with thousands of students in Tehran, Iran, November 3, 2019. (Office of the Iranian Supreme Leader via AP)         They are of the extreme Religious element and have changed the life-styleof the Iranians completely, with intentions of wiping out Israel.  Why?  Theirreligious reasoning.  ‘Not anti-Semitic’: Khamenei defines Iran’s goal of ‘wiping out Israel.’ Belying Tehran’s relentless threats to ensure ‘nothing left’ of Jewish state, ‘raze’ Tel Aviv and Haifa, leader says aim is to abolish ‘regime,’ get rid of ‘thugs’ like Netanyahu.

“Wiping out Israel means that the Palestinian people, including Muslims, Christians and Jews, should be able to determine their fate and get rid of thugs such as [Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu,” Khamenei continued, according to Iranian media, not being direct in this speech, but he  wants the Palestinians to decide where they want to live despite the fact that they are brain-washed into wanting all of Israel.  Why does the leader, the Ayatollah,  hate Netanyahu?  Probably because he's logical and truthful and knows about his plans for making nuclear bombs and bomb Israel.

Yitzhak Shamir (Yezernitsky's) Place in Israel's Creation and History

 Nadene Goldfoot

One of Israel's Prime Ministers was Yitzhak Shamir, bornin 1915, 2 years younger than my mother.  He was born in Poland and in 1935, a year after I was born, he immigrated to Palestine when he joined the Irgun Tzvai Leumi or Etzel (National Military Organization) in 1937 leaving it in in 1940 for the Lohamei Herut Israel of which he became one of the 3 heads.

Lohamei Herut Israel also went by the name of the Stern Group, led by  Avraham Stern born in 1907 and had also left Irgun Tavai Leumi of which he had been a leader and formed an underground organization, later known as Lohamei Herut Israel

That was a group that my 3rd cousin, Stanley Goldfoot, had become the Chief of Intelligence.  Stanley was born in 1914 in South Africa.  His father, Simon Goldfoot b: 1874 and my grandfather and his cousin, Nathan Goldfoot, were born in Telsiai, Lithuania.  Simon made his way to South Africa and Nathan to Oregon, USA.  As soon as Stanley graduated high school, he made his way to Israel.  This is what Zionistic young men did when they made Aliyah to Palestine.  They helped to create  the land of their history into land they could maintain and live in and get away from all the anti-Semitism of Europe with its pogroms and hatred for Jews.  At the end of WWI, the land was no longer under the rule of the Ottoman Empire.  The Allies were deciding how to divvy up Palestine and the rest of the Ottoman's Middle East land.  It was open for speculation.

These men were fighting the British who held the 30 year mandate over Palestine.  They were occupying Palestine and were supposed to help the Jews create a Jewish Homeland.  They had other ideas that boiled down to helping Arabs enter the land while they kept Jews out.  They did this while they were fighting the Germans in WWI. The mandate started in 1917 at the end of the 1st war and went on till Israel's birth, May 14, 1948, when the British left Palestine, so the fighting continued on throughout WWII.

Then their land became Israel once more, like it had been under King Saul, David and Solomon, about 1030 BCE to 70 CE when the Romans burned down Jerusalem and the Temple, 1100 years as Israel.  The USA will not match that span of time until the year 2876. - 676 more years to go.  Do you think Americans will be greatly attached to the USA by then?  Many Jews are still attached to Israel though we have been separated from it for almost 2,000 years till May 14, 1948.

Shamir escaped from the British twice who wanted to arrest him.  Once it was after deportation in Eritrea.  From 1955 to 1965, he worked for the Mossad which is the Israeli secret service.

From 1972 he sat in the Knesset as a Herut member, serving as speaker. From 1977 to 1980 he was the foreign minister and on.  That's when my husband and I made Aliyah to Israel and lived there for over 5 years.

In 1983, he succeeded Menahem Begin as Prime Minister.

The 1984 elections led to a stalemate and an agreement was reached between Shamir's LIKKUD party  (which is also Netanyahu's Party) and Shimon Peres' LABOR party for a government of National Unity, which a rotation agreement between the 2 men, like the government is doing today.

Shamir then served as foreign minister.  In 1984 to 1986, he resumed the premiership.  After the 1988 elections he continued to head a national Unity Government and after the Labor Party left the government in 1990, he led a right wing-religious coalition, which entered the peace talks with the Arabs.  At the same time, conditions were such that they felt they must continue insisting on the expansion of Jewish settlement in the Administered Territories. The fact is, the promised Jewish Homeland had been whittled down immediately with Prince Abdullah getting 77% of the Jewish Promised Land that had been Israel in ancient days, also.

Then the 23% did not last.  Jews were left with about 10% after Judea and Samaria (the original Israel) now called the West Bank and Gaza were  taken from them. Israel's population has now grown from the 600,000 in 1948 to over 6 million now, and people are almost ALL living in apartments.  It's getting populated like Japan. It's a place of refuge for Jews that have had it with anti-Semitic life. The Arabs have a life-style of having 4 wives and no birth control.  Jews have one wife-at least at a time like the USA.

Did anyone consider what the Arabs were going to do in this process?  Yes, Emir Feisal was their spokesman at the conferences.  He was happy about the Jews' plans of creating their homeland and had hoped that the Palestinian Arabs would learn from them.  He became the king of Iraq and the king of Syria.  Palestinians were basically nomadic people, and those who did own land had sold it to the incoming Jews who paid the outlandishly high prices.  They were mostly Arabs from Syria.  There was never a country of Palestine, only a Jewish land renamed by the Romans as Palestine which came under the Ottoman Empire in the last 400 years-and that meant held by the Turks of Turkey, not Arabs. The only thing they had in common was that they were both Muslims.

Shamir had to make a speech.  He said, " i could recite a litany of facts which demonstrate the extent to which Syria merits the dubious honor of being one of the most oppressive, tyrannical regimes in the world."  He went on explaining that Syria was a terrorist state.  The previous evening, Moualem had shown Farouk al-Shar'aa a 1948 newspaper clipping-that he got from a man from the Lebanon delegation, with a photograph of 33 year old Yitzhak Shamir with the word, WANTED, written across it in bold letters.  Shar'aa  tore up his prepared speech, went to the podium with the photograph.  He asked the audience why this picture was distributed?  It was about the assassination of Count Bernadotte, the UN mediator in Palestine in 1948,  and then he claimed that Shamir was the one who did the assassination.  He told the people that Shamir kills peace mediators."

Farouk al-Shar'aa--born 10 December 1938) is a Syrian politician and diplomat. He is one of the most prominent officials in the Syrian government and served as foreign minister of Syria from 1984 until 2006 when he became Vice President of Syria.  In mid-August the spokesperson of the Free Syrian Army announced that Sharaa had fled to Jordan.  A spokesman for Sharaa denied this report to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA). On 26 August 2012, Sharaa appeared in public in Syria for a second time, disproving false reports that he had fled to Jordan.

Well, he was a little confused.  Shamir had belonged to the Stern Group.  It was my cousin, Stanley, who was also thought to have done the planning of this, but that was not the case.  Others had taken it out of his hands.  It actually was Yehoshua Zettler who was to exercise overall command of the the operation and the 2 key men were to be his new deputy, Joshua Cohen, and his intelligence officer, Stanley Goldfoot.  He was also a journalist. This was a Stern operation, though, and what Shamir's part was happened to be in discussion , the same with all of the members.

Police mug shot of Zettler, not very flattering

Zettler was born on July 15, 1917 in Kfar Saba, a Sabra (native born)  a Jewish settlement in what became the British Mandate of Palestine following World War I, and later part of Israel. The community — including Zettler's home — was largely destroyed in Arab riots in 1921, and the house was reconstructed after his family and other residents returned. He attended the Geula school in Tel Aviv. Zettler was an Israeli who served as the Jerusalem commander of the Jewish paramilitary group Lehi, often called the Stern Gang.   Stanley told me not to refer to it as a "gang."  I was able to meet him in Jerusalem at the King David Hotel for our 1st meeting, then at his home at other times.  Tall and slender, he maintained his figure even in old age, like his cousin Ian Goldfoot, that my brother and I also met in the States.  Stanley is remembered for his essay, LETTER TO THE WORLD.

Remember the movie, Exodus with Paul Neuman?  "Exodus is a 1960 American epic historical drama film on the founding of the State of Israel. It was made by Alpha and Carlyle Productions and distributed by United Artists. Produced and directed by Otto Preminger, the film was based on the 1958 novel Exodus by Leon Uris. It gives you a taste of what Jews went through in getting their state established.  While Preminger's film softened the anti-British and anti-Arab sentiment of the novel, the film remains contentious for its depiction of the Arab–Israeli conflict". I wonder what people would think of it today?
