What TV News Station Is Your Preference?

 Nadene Goldfoot

What TV station do you watch?  This trust of yours in their news determines your Political preference.  I just watched CNN who only presented one side of an issue dear to my heart.  That's what most stations are also showing.  Yet there is another important side to the issue.  Why haven't these major stations at least been discussing it?

Those with consistently conservative political values are oriented around a single outlet—Fox News—to a much greater degree than those in any other ideological group: Nearly half (47%) of those who are consistently conservative name Fox News as their main source for government and political news. Far fewer choose any other single source: Local radio ranks second, named by 11%, with no other individual source named by more than 5% of consistent conservatives. Those with mostly conservative views also gravitate strongly toward Fox News – 31% name it as their main source, several times the share who name the next most popular sources, including CNN (9%), local television (6%) and radio (6%) and Yahoo News (6%).

On the left of the political spectrum, no single outlet predominates. Among consistent liberals, CNN (15%), NPR (13%), MSNBC (12%) and the New York Times (10%) all rank near the top of the list. CNN is named by just 20% of those with mostly liberal views, but still tops their list, followed by local television (11%) and NPR (9%). Both MSNBC and Fox News are mentioned by 5% of those who are mostly liberal. Those in other ideological groups name the New York Times, NPR and MSNBC less frequently as top news sources.

Fox News (8%) is among the most-named sources in this “long tail,” along with Yahoo News (7%) and Google News (6%), both of which primarily aggregate and highlight news produced by other outlets.

Many people use the Comcast Carrier. Comcast is a global media and technology company that owns the Xfinity brand, which provides internet, cable TV, phone, and mobile services to residential and business customers in the United States. The company also owns NBCUniversal, a major media conglomerate that includes broadcast networks (NBC, Telemundo), film studios (Universal Pictures, DreamWorks Animation), streaming services (Peacock), and theme parks (Universal Destinations & Experiences). Comcast carries all the stations on a very long list thatis handy to have on hand, using numbers from 2 to 71,  and then from 106 to 981 byskipping a lot of numbers.    I'll use Portland, Oregon watchers as the example.

What I personally can't use Comcast for is YouTube.  However, Yes, Comcast (Xfinity) carries both the free YouTube app and the paid YouTube TV service, but they are different offerings.

  • What it is: YouTube TV is a cable TV alternative, not a free service.
  • How to access it: If you are an Xfinity internet customer, you can subscribe to YouTube TV and then access the app through a compatible streaming box, such as the Xfinity Flex or Xumo Stream Box.

Channel 2 KATU (ABC) is generally considered to be slightly left-of-center in its reporting, though it is often described as one of the more centrist options among the major broadcast news outlets, particularly when compared to heavily partisan sources. Research has shown that ABC News, along with NBC News-8 (KGW) and CBS News 6 (KOIN) , is a trusted source for a significant portion of Democrats, and a 2014 Pew Research Center study found the broadcast networks to be slightly to the left of center.

Channel 12 KPTV (Fox)  is a local television affiliate that does not have a political leaning in itself, but its parent network, FOX News, is generally considered to be on the political right. Therefore, you can assume that KPTV may align with a right-leaning political perspective, although it is primarily focused on delivering local news, weather, and sports to the Portland, Oregon area.

Channel 9 NewsNation  aims for political centrism but has faced allegations of a rightward tilt, with some sources listing it as a right-leaning news source, while others, including the network itself and some media bias charts, consider it close to the political center.

Channel 44  CNN Major media bias analysis groups, such as AllSides and Pew Research Center, rate CNN's bias as "Lean Left," though this assessment can vary depending on whether the analysis is for its digital or televised content.

Channel 48 Fox News is Fox News is a news channel with a conservative and Republican-leaning bias, although it draws a diverse audience from across the ideological spectrum. While it is a dominant source for conservatives and Republicans, other right-leaning sources like Breitbart or Newsmax are even further to the right. Fox News presents itself as an objective news source, but various analyses and viewer perceptions indicate a conservative bias in its reporting.

Channel  128 MSNBC While MSNBC initially offered general news coverage when it launched in 1996, it began shifting toward opinion-based programming in the late 2000s, featuring liberal and progressive commentators. This transition was largely driven by the popularity of opinionated hosts such as Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow.A 2013 study by the Pew Research Center found that MSNBC was the most opinionated news network, with 85% of its content being commentary or opinion. Personally, I found Rachel to remind me of a gossipy old woman sharing the latest bit of gossip.I didn't  like her delivery nor her opinion.  But then, I'm an Israeli advocate and she, also Jewish, didn't  get what I knew.

Channel 53 FX is

Digital content for TV news comes from digital and streaming platforms, such as networks' websites and apps, video-on-demand services like Hulu, YouTube and other internet television sources, including social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram, and online-only news outlets. This content is distinct from traditional broadcasts and is created for distribution online to reach audiences on the internet via their devices.

Televised content  TV news  comes from television and internet sources produced by local TV stations, national networks (like ABC News, CBS News, NBC News), cable channels (like CNN), and global news agencies (like the Associated Press). News is gathered using electronic equipment by reporters and crews who transmit the information to newsrooms for editing and broadcasting to viewers

National networks get their news from what source?   National news networks get their news from a combination of sources, including their own reporting by journalists, information provided by news agencies or wire services, and sometimes from other media outlets. News agencies act as wholesalers, gathering news and selling it to subscribing news organizations like television broadcasters, newspapers, and radio stations.

  • .
These organizations, like Reuters, gather news from around the world and sell it to subscribing news organizations, providing them with reports, photos, and video. Key examples of news wire services include Associated Press (AP) and Reuters, which serve as crucial sources of information for many national news organizations.
Several news wire services, including the Associated Press (AP) and Reuters, are widely used by news outlets and claim impartiality. However, some media analysis organizations, such as AllSides, assess these services for political bias based on their content. Wire services do not typically advertise a specific political leaning.

Based on assessments by media bias organizations like AllSides, here is an overview of major wire services and their reported leanings:
Reuters
  • Lean: Center bias.
  • Assessment: AllSides has high confidence in its "Center" rating for Reuters. In a July 2021 review, editors from across the political spectrum found Reuters' fact-checking had minimal partisan language. Reuters states that its journalists are guided by "Trust Principles," which mandate reporting with integrity, independence, and freedom from bias.
Associated Press (AP)
  • Lean: Left bias.
  • Assessment: While the AP states its mission is to report in an impartial way, AllSides shifted its rating from "Lean Left" to "Left" in November 2024. This was based on a blind survey of 707 Americans and an editorial review. The review noted what was perceived as a trend toward more left-leaning content, including evidence of story choice bias, slant, and subjective qualifiers.
Bloomberg News
  • Lean: Lean Left bias.
  • Assessment: AllSides rates Bloomberg with a "Lean Left" bias. This rating was affirmed by an August 2020 blind bias survey and other independent reviews. AllSides notes that while Bloomberg's focus is on business and economics, it has demonstrated a "Lean Left" bent in its reporting. For example, in 2019, it admitted to an editorial decision not to investigate its founder, Michael Bloomberg, or his Democratic rivals during his presidential primary run.
Agence France-Presse (AFP)
  • Lean: AFP asserts its neutrality and independence from political influence, which is also protected by French law.
  • Assessment: The AFP charter is based on a founding statute that prohibits it from falling "under the control... of any ideological, political or economic grouping". An op-ed from the AFP chairman reaffirms this, stating, "The only bias AFP has is to the facts".
Deutsche Presse-Agentur (dpa)
  • Lean: Aims for non-partisanship and neutrality, which is affirmed by its customer base.
  • Assessment: The dpa is the largest German press agency and states its principles include independence from ideologies, businesses, and governments. It supplies customers across the German political spectrum, and its statute requires it to operate impartially.
Agencia EFE
  • Lean: There are recent concerns about potential political influence.
  • Assessment: Based in Spain, EFE has recently faced criticism from opposition parties over what they perceive as political influence from the governing party. A nomination for its leadership in 2023 was criticized for potentially compromising the agency's independence.
United Press International (UPI)
  • Lean: Does not have a widely cited, third-party bias assessment, though individual users sometimes perceive a slant.
  • Assessment: Historically a major wire service in the U.S., UPI's operations have changed significantly. It does not have a current, publicly available political bias rating from mainstream media analysis groups like AllSides.
Important considerations for assessing wire service bias
  • Editorial vs. Wire Content: Bias assessments often focus on an outlet's main editorial content, which can differ from the raw wire content purchased by other newsrooms.
  • Blind Surveys: Some assessments, like those conducted by AllSides, use "blind surveys" where respondents rate the political lean of an article without knowing the source.
  • Ownership and Funding: Corporate or government ownership and funding can, in some cases, create a perceived or actual conflict of interest, influencing coverage.
  • Global vs. Domestic Coverage: Many wire services are global and may cover domestic issues differently from international ones. The AP's "Left" bias rating, for example, is based largely on its U.S.-facing content. So, what do I watch?  I have a list of Israeli TV that I watch, right from Israel, and get it fromYouTube.  Otherwise, I do like David Muir on 2.  for general USA news.   He has a great   nightly presentation.

Comparison of Democracy of USA and Israel: A Difference of Opinion Acting Upon Uproar in Israel

 Nadene Goldfoot

Israelis do not want their Democracy messed with.  They want things left alone in their government.  Netanyahu is all for upgrading it, especially the judicial part.  The results have been news and TV pictures of the whole country rebelling with demonstrations of miles and miles of Israelis walking with signs.

Netanyahu claims the Judiciary has more power than the rest of the government.  He's actually been harmed by it, personally, so he has even more motivation than others.  The most respectful American defense lawyer, Alan Dershowitz, sides with him and has given him the suggestion that he needs to change the judiciary to meet the standards in the USA, as I understand.  So what's the differences?

The USA has 3 sections of their Democratic government;  The Constitution of the United States divides the federal government into three branches: legislative, executive, and judicial. This ensures that no individual or group will have too much power. Each provides its own checks and balances.  Each branch of government can change acts of the other branches:

  • The president can veto legislation created by Congress. He or she also nominates heads of federal agencies and high court appointees.
  • Congress confirms or rejects the president's nominees. It can also remove the president from office in exceptional circumstances.
  • The Justices of the Supreme Court, nominated by the president and confirmed by the Senate, can overturn unconstitutional laws.
Demonstrators against the judicial reform in Haifa, 11 January 2023. The protester's sign reads a quote from the Hebrew Bible: "How is the faithful city become an harlot! Thy princes are rebellious, and companions of thieves: every one loveth gifts, and followeth after rewards." (Isaiah 1:21–23)

Israel is a parliamentary democracy, consisting of legislative, executive and judicial branches. Its institutions are :
the Presidency,
the Knesset (parliament),
the Government (cabinet),
the Judiciary and
the State Comptroller.

Netanyahu says Israel's judicial has too much power.  He wants itfixed.

Under Israel's current constitutional framework, all legislation, government orders, and administrative actions of state bodies are subject to judicial review by the Supreme Court of Israel, which has the power to strike down legislation and reverse executive decisions it determines to be in violation of Israel's Basic ...Law.

Basic Law: Human Dignity and Liberty (1992)

Passed on March 17, 1992, by the Twelfth Knesset. The law determines that the basic human rights in Israel are based on the recognition of the value of the human being, the sanctity of his life, and his being a free person.

The Supreme Court in Jerusalem is the highest court of Israel and the final court of appeals. The Court consists of 15 Justices and two Registrars. The head of the Supreme Court and of the whole judicial system is the President of the Supreme Court. Justice Esther Hayut currently serves in this position.

In contrast, the USA Supreme Court has 9 judges.

Yariv Gideon Levin (Hebrew: ×™ָרִיב ×’ִּדְעוֹן לֵוִין, born 22 June 1969) is an Israeli lawyer and politician who serves as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Justice.

There is infighting going on between the judges.  Justice Minister Yariv Levin called Hayut a "political party" and accused her of trying to "set the streets on fire."  The lady, head of all the judges, said that The government’s planned judicial reform will “crush” the judicial system, Supreme Court President Esther Hayut warned at the annual convention of the Israeli Association of Public Law on Thursday.  She doesn't want the boat rocked at all.

In January 2023, Levin unveiled a governmental plan for a legislative overhaul of the country's judicial system. The plan seeks to weaken the Supreme Court of Israel by granting the government effective control over the Judicial Selection Committee, prohibiting the court from ruling on the constitutionality of certain laws and regulations, and granting the Knesset the power to override any court ruling by a simple majority.

The comparison with USA is that When the Supreme Court rules on a constitutional issue, that judgment is virtually final; its decisions can be altered only by the rarely used procedure of constitutional amendment or by a new ruling of the Court. However, when the Court interprets a statute, new legislative action can be taken.

Dershowitz's recommendation is:  Implicit in the first reform is the belief that the Supreme Court has gone too far in asserting its power over a broad array of issues. Proponents of the reform have a point. The Supreme Court should have only limited authority over largely economic and political issues, such as the gas deal with Lebanon or the ability of a particular individual to serve in the government. It would be reasonable for the Knesset to be able to override such decisions, which do not involve the fundamental rule of law.

Courts have no special competence in those areas, and the popular will, as reflected by elected legislators, should generally prevail over the opinions of appointed judges. But when it comes to decisions regarding basic issues of civil liberties, human rights, minority rights, civil rights, due process, free speech, religious liberty, equal protection and other enduring aspects of individual liberty, the Supreme Court should have the last word.

Benjamin Netanyahu, Outstanding Prime Minister''s Past of Trials and Tribulations

 Nadene Goldfoot

Dedicated to my daughter, Deborah, who joins my concern about Netanyahu being ousted.

Benjamin Netanyahu b: October 21, 1949 in Tel Aviv

Benjamin Netanyahu is an Israeli politician serving as the prime minister of Israel since 2009, for a total of the past 12 years.   He is the longest-serving Israeli prime minister in history and the first to be born in Israel after its Declaration of Independence.

Which is Benjamin?  Yonaton was born first, then Benjamin and Iddo.

His parents were  Prof. Benzion Netanyahu (original name Mileikowsky) and Tzila (Cela; née Segal). His mother was born in 1912 in Petah Tikva, then in Ottoman Palestine, now Israel. Though all his grandparents were born in the Russian Empire (now Belarus, Lithuania and Poland), his mother's parents emigrated to Minneapolis in the United States. He is related to Rabbi Eliyahu of Vilna (the Vilna Gaon) on his paternal side.

Netanyahu's father, Benzion, was a professor of Jewish history at Cornell University, editor of the Encyclopaedia Hebraica, and a senior aide to Ze'ev Jabotinsky, who remained active in research and writing into his nineties. Regarding the Palestinian people, he stated: "That they won't be able to face [anymore] the war with us, which will include withholding food from Arab cities, preventing education, terminating electrical power and more. They won't be able to exist, and they will run away from here. But it all depends on the war, and whether we will win the battles with them." If his father could only see what Netanyahu has had to face!

After graduating from high school in Pennsylvania 1967, Netanyahu returned to Israel to enlist in the Israel Defense Forces. He trained as a combat soldier and served for five years in an elite special forces unit of the IDF, Sayeret Matkal. He took part in numerous cross-border assault raids during the 1967–70 War of Attrition, rising to become a team-leader in the unit. He was wounded in combat on multiple occasions. He was involved in many other missions, including the 1968 Israeli raid on Lebanon and the rescue of the hijacked Sabena Flight 571 in May 1972, in which he was shot in the shoulder. He was discharged from active service in 1972 but remained in the Sayeret Matkal reserves. Following his discharge, he left to study in the United States but returned in October 1973 to serve in the Yom Kippur War. He took part in special forces raids along the Suez Canal against Egyptian forces before leading a commando attack deep inside Syrian territory, the details of which remain classified today.

Netanyahu's paternal grandfather was Nathan Mileikowsky, a leading Zionist rabbi and JNF fundraiser. Netanyahu's older brother, Yonatan, was killed in Uganda during Operation Entebbe in 1976. His younger brother, Iddo, is a radiologist and writer. All three brothers served in the Sayeret Matkal reconnaissance unit of the Israel Defense Forces.  He has a 1st cousin, Nathan Netanyahu, born in 1951, a computer scientist.

Having previously served in that role from 1996 to 1999 actually makes him Prime Minister of Israel for 15 years.  . Netanyahu is also the chairman of the Likud; Israel's National Liberal Movement, which is a right-wing political party.  This is a different meaning from the USA's Democratic party which is also very liberal, but is on the left.

His 12-year service may be coming to an end this year at age 72.  "The attempt to put an end to Netanyahu's rule, publicly announced Sunday night by hard-right party leader, Naftali Bennett, has been welcomed by a surprising cross-section of left-wing and right-wing Israelis, as Netanyahu and his allies fight fiercely to keep him in power ahead of a looming Wednesday deadline for a new coalition to be reached."  "

Israeli opposition leader Naftali Bennett says he's ready to join parties on the Left to form a new unity coalition government that could unseat Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. CNN's Hadas Gold reports.
Source: CNN.  Compared to Netanyahu, I just heard on TV that they consider Bennett a 3rd rate politician.  Netyanhu would be a formidable contender, all right, with plenty of experience.

Indeed, the one thing Netanyahu has going for him is his ability to speak in English, actually better than most Americans.  Not only his vocabulary, but his ability to defend Israel when caught off-guard.  The man's intelligence and ability to communicate is amazing.  I'll never forget when he was on TV and speaking with Obama who wanted Israel to go back to the 67 lines, and Netanyahu spoke so eloquently.  It was amazing to behold.

It was during Netanyahu's service that the Abraham Accords came to fruition.   This was on September 15,2020.

We have many budding politicians who can't get a break, they feel, with Netanyahu in the main seat.  So a few have another method other than elections to get him out which it true all over the world  Pin something on them.

Since January 2017, Netanyahu has been investigated and questioned by Israeli police in two cases, "Case 1000" and "Case 2000". The two cases are connected. In Case 1000, Netanyahu is suspected of having obtained inappropriate favors from businessmen, including James Packer and Hollywood producer Arnon Milchan. This case concerns the prime minister's relationship with two businessmen: Arnon Milchan, an Israeli Hollywood film producer, and James Packer, an Australian billionaire. In a document summarising the indictment, Israeli Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit alleged that Mr Netanyahu and his wife, Sara, received various goods from the businessmen, "mainly cigar boxes and cases of champagne".  They were allegedly given in a continuous manner, "such that they became a sort of 'supply channel'". The value of the goods was approximately 700,000 shekels ($198,000; £162,000).

Given the connections between them, Mr Netanyahu "should have refrained from dealing with Mr Milchan's affairs", the attorney general said. Despite this, he claimed, Mr Netanyahu "acted for the benefit of Mr Milchan as part of his official roles" between 2011 and 2016. Mr Netanyahu has insisted they were merely tokens of friendship and that he did not act inappropriately in exchange for them.  Mr Milchan and Mr Packer are not facing any charges, but like the prime minister they have denied any wrongdoing.

Case 2000 involves alleged attempts to strike a deal with the publisher of the Yedioth Ahronot newspaper group, Arnon Mozes, to promote legislation to weaken Yedioth's main competitor, Israel Hayom, in exchange for more favorable coverage of Netanyahu.

On 3 August 2017, Israeli police confirmed for the first time that Netanyahu was suspected of crimes involving fraud, breach of trust, and bribes in cases "1000" and "2000". The next day, it was reported that the Prime Minister's former chief of staff, Ari Harow, had signed a deal with prosecutors to testify against Netanyahu in these cases.

Israelis protest against Netanyahu outside his official residence in Jerusalem on 30 July 2020

On 13 February 2018, Israeli police recommended that Netanyahu be charged with corruption. According to a police statement, sufficient evidence exists to indict the prime minister on charges of bribery, fraud, and breach of trust in the two cases. Netanyahu responded that the allegations were baseless and that he would continue as prime minister. On 25 November 2018, it was reported that Economic Crimes Division Director Liat Ben-Ari recommended indictment for both cases.

On 28 February 2019, the Israeli attorney general announced his intent to file indictments against Netanyahu on bribe and fraud charges in three different cases. Netanyahu was formally indicted on 21 November 2019. If Netanyahu is convicted, he could face up to 10 years in prison for bribery and a maximum of three years for fraud and breach of trust. He is the first sitting prime minister in Israel's history to be charged with a crime. On 23 November 2019, it was announced that Netanyahu, in compliance with legal precedent set by the Israeli Supreme Court in 1993, would relinquish his agriculture, health, social affairs and diaspora affairs portfolios. The matter of forcing a prime minister to resign due to an indictment has yet to be tested in court. He was officially charged on 28 January 2020.

Netanyahu's criminal trial is set to begin on 24 May 2020, having been initially scheduled for March of that year but delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  Yet, on 17 May 2020, Netanyahu was sworn-in for a fifth term as prime minister in a coalition with Benny Gantz. This occurred after the 2019–20 Israeli political crisis.

Against a background of the COVID-19 pandemic in Israel and Netanyahu's criminal trial, extensive demonstrations broke out against him in front of the Prime Minister's residence. Following this, Netanyahu ordered to disperse the demonstrations using COVID-19 special regulations, limiting them to 20 people and at a distance of 1,000 meters from their homes. However, the exact opposite was achieved; the demonstrations were enlarged and dispersed to over 1,000 centers. By March 2021, Israel became the country with the highest vaccinated population per capita in the world against COVID-19.

"TEL AVIV — The leaders of two of Israel's main opposition parties said they would work together to form a coalition government on Sunday, in a move that could see Benjamin Netanyahu unseated as prime minister for the first time in 12 years."In the last two years, Israel has been in a circle of elections, internal fighting with no leadership," Bennett said Sunday in a televised announcement. "This will not happen again. We can stop this and take control. There is no option for a right-wing government lead by Netanyahu — it’s either a change government or new elections.""No one believes Netanyahu anymore," Bennett added. "In this critical moment, I’m saying I intend to form a national unity government with Lapid."

Naftali Bennett, head of the small religious and nationalist Yamina party, and opposition leader Yair Lapid, of the centrist Yesh Atid party, said they had joined forces.

Today, shown on TV IL, they have everything open, and a wonderful way to keep the virus from returning.  They are way ahead of the rest of the world in this, and tourists are flying in.  They can thank Netanyahu.

if Netanyahu is ousted, he most likely will make a come-back later on.  He's still relatively young for a politician, and is one of the most capable men on the planet.
