The Necessity of Understanding Difference Between Middle East and Western Civilizations

Nadene Goldfoot

Mankind started in Africa and slowly came out and spread eastward, first as hunters, then gatherers/farmers.  This is something we've learned from the study of DNA, a very new field in the world of science.  All men carry within their cells, DNA that distinguishes them from one family/clan line from another.  It's called the Y haplogroup/haplotype, recorded for us like R1, Q, G, etc.  Populations can be tested and follow their progress from one place to another.  (Women have their own called the mt haplogroup-apart from the men). The male line's genealogy was recorded in the bible, maybe for good reason as this follows DNA's importance that we have in population genetics.  We may have all started at just about the same time, but our civilizations have developed at different times.

Menes,  1st pharaoh,  first ruler of the first dynasty of Kemet which is said to have begun between 3200 – 3000 B.C. and he ruled around sixty years, 5,222 years ago.
Egypt's civilization with pharaoh's can be traced back, using their heiroglyphics, Menes, also spelled Mena, Meni, or Min, (flourished c. 2925 BCE), 4,947 years ago, legendary first king of unified Egypt, who, according to tradition, joined Upper and Lower Egypt in a single centralized monarchy and established ancient Egypt's 1st dynasty.  It was already 1,340 years old by the time Moses was 80 years old.  Moses was born in 1391 BCE.  (I get the dates from the Jewish figuration of time from our Tanakh, deciphered and used by my Jewish encyclopedia).

There were other civilizations during this period; Assyrian Empire, Babylonian Empire, Sumerian Empire, Hittite, etc.

We can see that the Middle Eastern civilization had been going on for the past 5,000 years.

The land of Israel was started in about 1485 BCE by Moses leading the slaves, Israelites and others of the past 400 years,  from Egypt , then a very old civilization already, to Canaan, a land of tents and a few dwellings and the beginnings of villages, getting there in about 1445 BCE.  They arrived 3,467 years ago.

"The British Isles were linked to continental Europe by a territory named Doggerland. The plains of Doggerland were thought to have finally been submerged around 6500 to 6000 BCE, but recent evidence suggests that the bridge may have lasted until between 5800 and 5400 BCE, and possibly as late as 3800 BCE, 5,822 years ago when the 1st pharaoh of Egypt emerged."  Doggerland must be land between France and England now underwater.

Around 4000 BCE migrants began arriving from central Europe. Although the earliest indisputably acknowledged languages spoken in the British Isles belonged to the Celtic branch of the Indo-European family,  it is not known what language these early farming people spoke. That was 6,022 years ago.

In 55 and 54 BCE, Roman general and future dictator Gaius Julius Caesar launched two separate invasions of the British Isles, though neither resulted in a full Roman occupation of the island. In 43 CE, southern Britain became part of the Roman Empire.  That was 1,979 years ago.

The first king was Alfred the Great, king of Wessex, b:849-d: October 26, 899  at age 50.  He was born 1,173 years ago.  He ruled from 871 CE.

The Last Kingdom is a great show on Netflix depicting all this history in a breath-taking history.  Like history?  Watch it. Here's Alfred.

Rome, capital of Italy, seems to be the oldest of Europe.  This city is said to have been founded by Romulus and Remus and were raised by wolves.  Rome was founded around 625 BCE, 2,647 years ago,  in the areas of ancient Italy known as Etruria and Latium.

It is thought that the city-state of Rome was initially formed by Latium villagers joining together with settlers from the surrounding hills in response to an Etruscan invasion.  Jews had arrived due to commerce-from trading from Israel by 139 BCE,  2,161 years ago.

By 51 BCE, Julius Caesar had conquered Celtic Gaul and, for the first time, Rome’s borders had spread beyond the Mediterranean region. Although the Senate was still Rome’s governing body, its power was weakening. Julius Caesar was assassinated in 44 BC and replaced by his heir, Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus (Octavian) who ruled alongside Mark Antony.

In 31 BC Rome overtook Egypt which resulted in the death of Mark Antony and left Octavian as the unchallenged ruler of Rome. Octavian assumed the title of Augustus and thus became the first emperor of Rome.

Rome, Egypt, Israel were all on the Mediterranean Sea.

People of the Middle East must have gathered up much DNA of people already quite civilized before Europe started to develop.  As the Middle Eastern civilization came and left,, Europe then developed.  The question is, is it ready to leave at this point in time?  With nuclear technology in our midst, one never knows.

Germany was part of the Holy Roman Empire.

In the late 1st century BCE, the Roman emperor Augustus launched campaigns across the Rhine, and incorporated areas of Germania as far east as the Elbe into the Roman Empire, creating the short-lived Roman province of Germania Antiqua in 7 BCE, with further aims of establishing a greater province of Magna Germania, with headquarters at Colonia (modern-day Cologne).

The Germans originally came from Scandinavia. They were mainly shepherds and hunters, and only a small minority were farmers. The Germans consisted of several different groups. The most important of these were the GothsVandalsFranks and Saxons.  The Germans were dangerous fighters. Their tactics were crude but. effective. Their main strategy was to charge the enemy and involve them in hand-to-hand combat. Only the chiefs wore helmets but they all carried large oblong shields and swords.  The Germans wore animal-skins. They were very proud of their long hair which they dyed red and wore in a bun or pony-tail. They also smeared their hair with thick grease.

Germany is the first of European Western countries that Jews moved to from Rome when on the continent. It's where Yiddish developed, a mixture of Hebrew and German.

In  286 CE, the Roman Empire was split into eastern and western empires, each ruled by its own emperor. The western empire suffered several Gothic invasions and, in  455, was sacked by Vandals. Rome continued to decline after that until  476 when the western Roman Empire came to an end. The eastern Roman Empire, more commonly known as the Byzantine Empire, survived until the 15th century CE. It fell when Turks took control of its capital city, Constantinople (modern day Istanbul in Turkey) in 1453.

The Byzantine Empire: the eastern Roman Empire with capital in Constantinople, grew and grew up to 637 when it included Palestine (named by the Romans from Israel).  Jews were there from 4th century.  Each new emperor had his own way of thinking about the Jews.  Justinian (527-565) had terrible laws for Jews with the decree in 553 that interfered with synagogue services itself!  Judaism was forbidden!  Here's where a major part of anti-Semitism started.    Today, people call Constantinople, Istanbul.

As empires developed, they interacted with others, and copied good ideas.  We've tried to drop bad ideas.   Thus, we have today.  The point being made is that the Middle East was first and is very very old.  The west, European, is very young by comparison, and this is a development in the people.  It could be a help or a hindrance, but it's interesting.  The question is, how does it affect our brains and thinking and problem-solving processes?

The fact is that we all share very distant ancient genes from our beginnings,  Jews have intermingled with non-Jews for the past 100 years, picking up other genes than the Middle Eastern ones,  but there are most non-Jews who have not, and have no "Jewish" genes.

All I know is that the Messiah (Moshiach) is expected by all religions at  just about the same time, and he is, according to Jewish prophets, to be from the House of David, so he should be an ancient middle eastern brain-problem solver.  Zelensky of Ukraine has been a good middle-eastern original problem-solver.

Qualifications Not Met For a State of Palestine

Nadene Goldfoot
Jewish Israeli Men
The has never been a state of Palestine.  Such a state has been in the works and has just produced the many terrorists either calling themselves the PA (Palestine Authority-a work over of Yasser Arafat's PLO, and its division of Hamas, the worst of the terrorists who have been given Gaza to live.  Yet, the countries of the world have deemed it proper that regardless of expectations for a new state, they should be given statehood.

Samuel Langhorne Clemens (November 30, 1835 – April 21, 1910), known by his pen name Mark Twain, was an American writer, humorist, entrepreneur, publisher, and lecturer.
Back in the days of Mark Twain, a group of people including him, took a pleasure  cruise, the trip of a lifetime which included Palestine.  He wrote about it in detail in his book, "The Innocents Abroad."
Innocents perhaps as their expectations might not have been met-in fact he may have come face to face with disappointment.  It was advertised as AN EXCURSION TO THE HOLY LAND, EGYPT, THE CRIMEA, GREECE, AND INTERMEDIATE POINTS OF INTEREST.  He left from Brooklyn, New York about June 1,  1867.  They traveled by steamer that was able to hold 150 cabin passengers but planned on leaving at 3/4 capacity.  The ship was provided with all necessities including a library and musical instruments with a doctor on board.

The steamer finally got to Joppa, Jerusalem, the River Jordan, the Sea of Tiberias, Nazareth, Bethany, Bethlehem and other points of interest in the Holy land where people could leave ship and visit..  Those who wanted a different route could make the journey from Beirut through the country and pass through Damascus, Galilee, Capernaum, Samaria and by the River Jordan and Sea of Tiberias, then rejoin the steamer.

He eagerly awaited seeing an Arab.  In boyhood he longed to be an Arab of the desert and have a beautiful mare and call her Selim or Benjamin or Mohammed  and feed her with his own hands and let her come into the tent, etc, etc.  Then reality set in.  He said that those of his acquaintance have no love for their horses, no sentiment of pity for them, no knowledge of how to treat them or care for them.  The saddle blanket is never removed from their horses, gets full of dirt and hair and becomes soaked with sweat.  It breeds sores.  These Pirates never think of washing a horse's back.  they do not shelter the horses in the tents, either.  His sentimental thinking he felt was wasted upon the Selims of romance.   (p. 202-203 of his book).

When entering the Galilee, and they visited there because it held the birthplace of their Savior, they saw "the country was infested with fierce Bedouins, whose sole happiness in life was to cut and stab and mangle and murder unoffending Christians.  Allah be with us"!, he wrote.

He saw unpeopled deserts, rusty mounds of barrenness, the ruins of Capernaum, this stupid village of Tiberias slumbering under its 6 funereal plumes of palms, and so forth with some of his  best and most creative writing not found in TOM SAWYER.

Palestine in 1867 was a dead and desolate landscape.  The Jews there, kept to themselves out of sight while the land was trodden over by roaming Bedouins, on horse or camel as if it were a hamburger spot on a trip from Oregon to Florida, not a place to live in.  It was desert and swamp with many mosquitoes and weeds.  The land was waiting for the Homies to return, the Jews who would bring it water and fertilizer and make it bloom again.  1880 was the moment of return, a response to too many pogroms in Russia that caused these people who had been praying for 2,000 years to be led back in a return.  Life outside their land had been impossible.

Noam Chomsky and buddy Norman Finkelstein.

This is how I still see Americans viewing the Palestinian Arabs, in a romantic way, but not in a real way.  For those that can read, all their history is in Joan Peter's book, FROM TIME IMMEMORIAL where she explains from actual papers showing they came in following the Russian Jewish immigration of the 1st Aliyah in 1880 and onward to Palestine.  There were a few who tried farming and owned land they couldn't do a thing with, so sold out to the immigrant Russian Jews who paid extremely  high prices for it but to whom this ugly land meant something.  Americans have a guilty conscience over their own Native Americans (Indians) and have made a comparison finding them the same, but it's like comparing apples to oranges.  They do not have the same history at all!

King Saul's death
and David is the next king

Who does compare better are the returning Jews who were quite native to this soil, having lived here as a nation since King Saul in the 11th century BCE.   before 1000 BCE.  He was the 1st King of Israel, son of Kish of the tribe of Benjamin.  Yes, we were tribal, too, like the Indians.  We also lived in tents.   There were 12 tribes, all from the 12 sons of Jacob.  That's over 3,000 years ago!

He was born in Góra Kalwaria on January 30, 1893 in Góra Kalwaria , Poland . He studies in a yeshiva and becomes Rabbi . In 1924, he became a member of Agoudat Israel , he is the representative of the Warsaw region and in 1929 he is Polish representative for the world. In 1937, he became a member of the presidency of the organization. From 1937 to 1939 he was a member of the Diet of the Republic of Poland .

He moved to Mandatory Palestine in 1940 and helped Polish victims of the Holocaust to immigrate to Palestine.
In 1948, he was among the signatories of the Declaration of Independence of the State of Israel .
He was a member of the first David Ben Gurion government in 1948. He left the government in 1952 as a result of the incorporation of women into the army .  This may be Meir Levin, the author's father.  It's typical of what he wrote about, the Jews who came back to Palestine.

Meyer Levin was born in 1905, died in 1981:
US novelist, retold Hasidic legends and wrote stories of Israel;
Lived in Israel: Prolific writer includes Compulsion, The Old Bunch, Citizens, Eva, Gore and Igor and his autobiography, In Search.

Meyer Levin wrote a historic-based novel, THE SETTLERS, in 1972 about the Jews who first settled in Palestine in 1880 and follows them through history to WWI.  It's one of the best I've ever read.  He writes about the hardships of the first Jewish pioneers and the spasmodic tyranny of the Turkish overlords, etc.  These pioneers had it just as rough as our American pioneers.

There were Jews in Palestine who had never left.  Their ancestors had remained, hidden more likely, as the Romans had a ban on Jews returning after they had dragged them out as slaves and took them to Rome.  They were to be killed if found.  It was not a safe proposition to try to return throughout the ages.  Many had tried and failed along the way.

The UN set down conditions for the Palestinian Arabs to follow in order to gain statehood, and they have never been met.  (Any act undertaken to establish a Palestinian state will be insufficient to confer membership in the community of nations, even in the presence of a significant display of support for a state of Palestine. This will largely be due to the Palestinians’ inability to satisfy the Security Council that, once a state, it will abide by the principles of the United Nations Charter.  One of those conditions was to behave peacefully.  Even today, Israel has had to enter their bomb shelters as rockets rained down.  It has started up again after a short pause while they burned their fields and forests with burning kites.  How can they be allowed statehood when they act like the Nazis entering Poland?  The United States has consistently supported a two-state solution and encouraged the establishment of a Palestinian state, but only after negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians sufficiently indicate that Israel’s security would not be jeopardized by a neighboring state of Palestine.

The Knesset of Israel has 120 members.  About 21 of them have taken the brave step of writing our USA Congress to reconsider their position on Palestinian Statehood, which they continue from other Presidents to back.  They feel a legal statehood recognition from the USA is even worse that today's BDS movement, a movement to end Israel economically.  Recognition and all the pluses it includes with statehood would severely damage the national security of both Israel and the United States.  It's been bad enough for Israel that since its inception it has had to defend themselves against the attacks of these Arabs who care less about life like they treated their horses than taking over Israel.

Like the dog who chases the bone, they wouldn't know what to do with it if, G-d forbid, they ever did TAKE Israel.  It would turn back into the weeds and swamps and desert that Jews found it in.  They haven't managed to take care of their people as the PA or Hamas well at all, spending all their given money on ammunition against Israel, not their people's needs.

Kartoum Conference in 1967 and 3 NOs
No to Peace with Israel

Congress was very clever.  They just passed legislation taking a strong stance against the BDS movement that has been going on for years, now.  But, it also included language re-affirming America's commitment to a 2-state solution between Israelis and Palestinians.  I say, when peace-minded Arabs in Gaza can take over from Hamas and rule, then we can think about it.  When the PA (Palestine Authority) is actually peace-minded and all for making peace with Israel, wiping out the 1967 commitment they made in an African conference in Kartoum  with other Muslim Arabs, then we can think about it.  Until then, our people will pray and prepare to defend themselves.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that if the Arabs put down their weapons today there would be no more violence. If the Jews put down their weapons, there would be no more Israel.

Golda Meir was an Israeli teacher, kibbutznik, stateswoman, politician and the fourth Prime Minister of Israel

As Gold Meir stated:  We will only have peace when the Arabs love their children more than they hate us:

There's no such thing as a PALESTINIAN PEOPLE.  It is not as if we came and threw them out and took their country.  They didn't exist.

We Jews have a secret weapon against our struggle with the Arabs.  We have nowhere else to go.

We have been forced to choose between what is more dangerous and what is less dangerous for us. At times we have all been tempted to give in to various pressures and to accept proposals that might guarantee us a little quiet for a few months, or maybe even for a few years, but that could only lead us eventually into even greater peril.

Caesar  used a similar tactic on the Jews by giving them a lot and then expecting them to return the favors by assimilating and changing their religion.  Martin Luther (1483-1546) used the same methods on Jews, turning against them violently when they didn't comply.  First he had spoken favorably of the Jews and said they had been treated badly by the Catholic Church hoping Jews would accept his brand of Christianity.  He turned using  extreme virulence, applauding everything that could be done to persecute and humiliate them.  His anti-Jewish attitude helped to inspire later German anti-Semitism.  Sticking on that tag of a 2-state  solution was such a tag.  It's there to satisfy the American Democrats.  Notice, since the Clinton-Arafat confabs of the Oslo processes, it isn't working.

We do not rejoice in victories. (Palestinians do).  Killing Jews is time for celebration with them.  They pass out candies to the children on these occasions.    We rejoice when a new kind of cotton is grown, when strawberries bloom in Israel.

The Dance Between Germany, Jews and Christianity

Nadene Goldfoot
My Essay, an attempt to answer this question with history.

"There was nothing unique about the German people of the 1930s."  Then what was happening at this time in Germany?  Something had to start the Nazi movement and of selecting Jews to be extinguished.

Are people really all alike?  No.  We have had different experiences.

"Caesar described the cultural differences between the Germanic tribesmen, the Romans, and the Gauls in his book Commentarii de Bello Gallico, where he recalls his defeat of the Suebi tribes at the Battle of Vosges. He describes them at length at the beginning of Book IV and the middle of Book VI. He states that the Gauls, although warlike, had a functional society and could be civilized, but that the Germanic tribesmen were far more savage and were a threat to Roman Gaul and Rome itself. Caesar said the Germanic tribes were nomadic, with no notable settlements and a primitive culture. He used this as one of his justifications for why they had to be conquered. His accounts of barbaric northern tribes could be described as an expression of the superiority of Rome, including Roman Gaul."

"So I suppose it might come as a surprise when I tell you that there was once a point where Germania was a Roman province. And that they welcomed the empire with open arms into their forests and lands. They fought in the Roman armies. And they accepted Roman learning and culture, at least for a time.

Germania "was used more as a catchall for the collectives of people who lived beyond the Roman borders on the Rhine, the Germani cisrhenani– literally “this side of the Rhine.” These peoples included the Teutonics, the Cherusci, the Seubi, the Chatti, the Goths, and a bunch of other colorful names, and possessed their own diverse culture. They were often considered by the Romans to be relations to the Gauls who emigrated into Rome, but over time assumed a sense of “othering” that would set them apart from the Empire to their east and south.

Starting as early as 12 BC, Augustus began a series of campaigns to defeat the tribes and unite all of Germania into a single province, Germania Magna, much as his uncle had desired to do. So one by one, the armies of Rome began to defeat the tribes and bring them to heel."

When Rome burned down the 2nd Temple in Jerusalem in 70 CE, events started falling in place.  Jews were starved, killed in this burning, and some managed to get to Iberia (Spain) where they had previously started trading.  Jews had been under occupation by the Romans and many were taken into their army as evidence of this has turned up Jewish soldiers being in Roman garrisons, , and brought to Europe's Rhineland (Germany) where they had also taken over.  Romans also took a majority to Rome as slaves where at least one of our ancestors were brought, facing the ultimate death of being in the Roman circus, eaten by lions, slaughtered in one to one combat, etc.  We have genes from the famous Jewish-Italian Kalonymus family of which many entered into eastern Europe much later.

Then Jews were barred from entering Jerusalem by the Roman edict.  They had to find other places to live.  However, General Bar Kakhba took back Jerusalem from the Romans and held it for 3 years from 132 to 135 CE, fighting them harder than any other people had previously.  He was slaughtered in the attempt.  The Romans were so furious with the Jews at this point that they renamed the land-Palestine-named for the worst enemy Jews had had up till then, the Philistines.

From Italy to Germany was the flow of Jews.  Some 200 years later in 321 CE, the emperor Constantine issued regulations on Jews which acknowledged that Jews had made it to Cologne.  Jews also had settled in other spots along the Rhineland.

People of all sorts were taken in by the Romans and had become soldiers with promises from the Romans of land.  Why was there a problem with the Jews, a people of the empire of Israel, who had their own religion, language and royal house until the Roman destruction.  The problem was with the newly found religion of Christianity,   and emperor Constantine who held a meeting of all the new Christians who decided that Jews were their competitor and how to undermine them and end their religion to make not only room but the only religion at that time.

In the beginning, Jews were admired and needed in lands for their trading acumen.  Jewish communities appears in Germany.  By the 9th century, they were living in Augsburg and Metz, and by the 10th at Worms, a very important center then for Jews and later for Christians, Mainz, Magdeburg, Ratisbon, etc.   The largest population of Jews was in the Rhineland of Mainz, Speyer, Worms, Cologne, etc where an intense intellectual life developed in the Jewish communities and went on into the 11th century under Franco-Jewish influence.

Persecution of Jews commenced and were recorded in 1012.  Then the worst thing happened in history.  The year 1096 brought out the Crusaders of Europe who embarked on the trek to Palestine with horses to drive out the Moslems from Jerusalem, where Queen Helena had visited looking for pieces of anything connected to Jesus.  The Europeans thought they had spotlighted Jerusalem as their land being it was where Jesus had his Last Supper and was killed by the Romans outside of it.    They had just changed over from a polytheistic religion to believing in a new way, a powerful way since Queen Helena had converted and talked her son into also converting to Christianity.

It was in 1096 that the Crusaders massacred the Jews throughout the Rhineland and adjacent area on their way to the Holy land where they would spill the blood of both Muslims and Jews.  After 9 Crusades and 200 years, they ended their trying takeover of the land that spit them out.

Now Jews are being chased out of the trades and forced into money lending since Christians found it a distasteful profession.  It was now the only one open for Jews among any populated area.  There were massacres happening.  The 1298 one was started by a knight by the name of Rindfleisch of Germany.  Notice that knights were from many countries of Europe by now, not just from England.

The stage is set against Judaism.  The people are marked first by the Romans and then by Constantine, who set the attitude towards Jews and the need to put them down.

We come to the 1930s CE in Germany and the country was going through an economic disaster.  They suffered after WWI-the war they themselves started.  Who did one enterprising man blame who had a big and loud mouth but Hitler, who accused the Jews for their problems.  His demeanor and voice and words mesmerized the people who were very oriented towards male dominance in their culture, and found themselves dominated intellectually as well by this evil representation of human existence.  Somehow people kowtowed to him, giving in as they thought he made sense.  They could not break out of this line of thought, and bent their minds to accept his attitude towards the unwanted Jews that they obviously heard about and their evil ways in their Lutheran churches.

There,  there you have it.  A country who had a large population of Jews, and Jews, who had already gone through a massacre in many European towns back in 1096 in the Christian Crusade, who suffered massacres by these same Crusaders in 1099, who had gone through expulsions from England, France, Spain, Hungary, Austria, being forced into Christianity, who had these events burned into their DNA, hung their heads in shame or in pride of who they were, and stayed until they felt the warning to leave, like Einstein did.

Our own uncle must have been the last Jew to leave in May of 1939 on a ship.  His father had fought for Germany in WWI and then made to scrub the streets in a showing against Jews.  He showed them.  He wore his WWI uniform.  Germany had started 2 World Wars.  This shows how aggressive a country they have become.

For Germany, with Hitler at the helm, had become an aggressive country to relieve their stagnant economic  woes, and they were automatically slaughtering off the very people who could have helped them:  the Jews.  Hitler had decided to kill them all, all who lived in this whole world, and he managed to slaughter 6 million.  Today we now have about 14 million Jews in the world, less than 1% of the world population.   The Germans had allowed an evil mind to dominate theirs.  They were used to being dominated in their homes by the father.  Hadn't they already been used to such a structure early on by being a part of the Roman army and it's structures?  For centuries they did not develop a reason to question life-to question their father's dominance.

On the other hand, as I look at Israel today and its 6 million Jews, 80% of its population, a country created by Jews seeking shelter in its own homeland after being the "wandering Jews of 2,000 years"
Who is creating the most businesses?  Israelis are.  6 million Jews now live in Israel, able to be surviving the indignities of a world of racists-who have turned against us again by calling Israel a racist state;  our refuge, our origin.  They have to be creative to handle such a stress.  Israelis have to think outside the box.
I'm so proud to be one of a handful of people who have survived.  May
Israel and its Israelis  continue to live on.

PS:  My husband belonged to a baseball group made up of various religions.  The Lutheran minister was his friend, and invited me to make a presentation about Israel to his congregation.  He loaned me information and slides, as I believe he had also visited.  That was the push I needed to make Aliyah to Israel and teach English.  He was a wonderful friend.  Luckily, we weren't living in Germany then.
Correction: General Bar Kokhba's 3 year war from 132-135 CE., not 135-138.
