Robert Norman Reiner March 6, 1947 – December 14, 2025: 78 years old) was a well-known Hollywood filmmaker, actor, producer, screenwriter, and liberal activist. He first became a household name for his role in the 1970s sitcom All in the Family and later appeared in The Wolf of Wall Street. Reiner transitioned from acting to directing, helming a number of acclaimed American films across various genres.
Robert Norman Reiner was born into a Jewish family in the Bronx, New York City, on March 6, 1947. His parents were the actors Estelle and Carl Reiner. His siblings are poet, playwright, and author Annie Reiner and painter, actor, and director Lucas Reiner. During his childhood, Reiner lived at 48 Bonnie Meadow Road in New Rochelle, New York.
Reiner said his childhood home was not observantly Jewish, although he did have a bar mitzvah ceremony. His father, Carl, had became an atheist in response to Hitler and the Holocaust. Reiner identified as an atheist on the January 13, 2012, episode of Real Time with Bill Maher. He later said that, while he rejected organized religion, he was sympathetic to the ideas of Buddhism.
Reiner married actress and director Penny Marshall in 1971. He adopted Marshall's daughter, actress Tracy Reiner, from her previous marriage to Michael Henry. Reiner and Marshall divorced in 1981.
While directing When Harry Met Sally..., Reiner was introduced to photographer Michele Singer. The meeting not only influenced his decision to change the film's ending, but also led to their marriage in 1989. They had 3 children: sons Jake and Nick and daughter Romy.
Reiner was a liberal activist. He was a co-founder of the American Foundation for Equal Rights, which initiated the court challenge against California Proposition 8 that banned same-sex marriage in the state. In 1998, Reiner chaired the campaign to pass California Proposition 10, the California Children and Families Initiative, which created First 5 California, a program of early childhood development services funded by a tax on tobacco products.
Reiner endorsed Joe Biden for president in the 2020 United States presidential election. In June 2021, Reiner announced he was developing a television project, The Spy and the Asset, about the relationship between Trump and Vladimir Putin. He said the series would explore the leaders' childhoods and trace their lives up to the point where they intersect. Reiner said he was collaborating with writer Ward Parry on the project. In September 2025, Reiner gave an interview with CNN, where he spoke out against Trump and the Federal Communications Commission. He said it "may be the last time you ever see me", in reference to the suspension of Jimmy Kimmel Live!
Reiner, 78, and his wife Michele, 68, were found stabbed to death at their home in the Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles on Sunday, December 14, 2025; their daughter, Romy, discovered them. The Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a medical aid call at the residence at 3:38 p.m. PST. Shortly after phoning the police, Romy called Billy Crystal, Reiner's longtime friend and collaborator, who rushed to the home with his wife.
On December 15, Los Angeles police arrested Nick Reiner, b: c 1994, the son of Rob and Michele Reiner, on suspicion of murder. Rob and Nick had attended a Christmas party hosted by Conan O'Brien on the evening of December 13 and had gotten into a verbal argument. Reportedly, Nick Reiner had been disruptive at the party, and had made guests feel uneasy. Conan Christopher O'Brien is an American writer, comedian, and television host. He's best known for hosting late-night talk shows on NBC and TBS, including Late Night with Conan O'Brien, The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien, and Conan. Before becoming a talk show host and writer for The Simpsons, O'Brien earned a degree in History and Literature. He's also the leader of TeamCoco.
Rob and Nick Reiner got into a shouting match at the party in West Los Angeles, said one of the attendees, who recalled Rob Reiner telling his son that his behavior was inappropriate. The attendee, who did not speak to the Reiners at the party, said that people seemed to be very aware of Nick Reiner’s history with drug abuse, which the family has discussed publicly. Nick Reiner, 32, was arrested Sunday night, hours after Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner were found stabbed to death in their home in the affluent Los Angeles neighborhood of Brentwood.
In 2016, the father and son released a semi-autobiographical film, “Being Charlie,” about a Los Angeles teenager who abused drugs and who had a turbulent relationship with his father. At the time, Nick Reiner was 22 and said he had been in and out of rehab about 18 times since he was 15.
