Natan Sharansky, Jewish Ukrainian; Russian Refusenik: Israeli

 Nadene Goldfoot

Anatol Natan Sharansky, b: January 20, 1948, a Ukranian  computer scientist by profession, was refused permission to emigrate to Israel in 1973 by Russia.  He was then arrested in 1977.  Anatol was kept in solitary confinement for 18 months and then sentenced in 1978 to 13 more years imprisonment.  Finally, he was released in 1986.  Israeli politician today, age 74 born3 months before Israel's birth, was 32 when my Hebrew teacher wrote to him in Russia's prison.

I made aliyah in September 1980 and lived in Haifa in an ulpan for the required 10 months required for teachers from other countries to become teachers in Israel.  We attended a school program there learning conversational Hebrew and passing a 3 hour test in it, and also taking history classes about Israel, teaching Hebrew speakers, and visiting schools and how they fared teaching English as a foreign language which was an important requirement to master by high school.

My Hebrew teacher was Sarah, who spoke English very well.  In fact, quite often she's stop and discuss things with us.  At the time, my husband and I were just a few Americans in a class well over 40 with the majority being Russian teachers who spoke a modicum of English and had been English teachers in Russia.  A few were from Canada and England.  Any Americans were from the East Coast, and we were the only ones from the West.

Sarah had a pen-pal in Russia who was in prison, a Jew put there who was caught studying Hebrew.  Sarah continued writing to him and somehow managed to teach Hebrew that way.  His name was Natan Sharansky.

Avital's wife, who fought to get him out of prison is   Natalia Stieglitz (UkrainianНаталія СтігліцRussianНаталья Штиглиц) in Ukraine, 1950; married name also Shcharansky) is a former activist and public figure in the Soviet Jewry Movement who fought for the release of her husband from Soviet imprisonment.

Natan Sharansky (Hebrewנתן שרנסקיRussianНата́н Щара́нскийUkrainianНатан Щаранський), born Anatoly Borisovich Shcharansky, is an Israeli politician, human rights activist, and author who, as a refusenik in the Soviet Union during the 1970s and 1980s, spent nine years in Soviet prisons. He served as Chairman of the Executive for the Jewish Agency from June 2009 to August 2018. Sharansky currently serves as chairman for the Institute for the Study of Global Antisemitism and Policy (ISGAP), an American non-partisan organization.  He took the name, Natan, after arriving in Israel.

I had forgotten much about Natan until one day, a lawyer friend of mine said to me, "Oh, I hate that Natan Sharansky!"  Why, I asked?  What do you know about him?  Why should you hate him so much?  He never could give me an answer, but I wondered about the sanity of some of my Americans.  This lawyer knew absolutely nothing about Israel or Jews, but he hated Netanyahu and Sharansky, that I learned.

Sharansky was born into a Jewish family on 20 January 1948 in the city of Stalino (now Donetsk) in the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic of the Soviet Union.

His father, Boris Sharansky, a journalist from a Zionist background who worked for an industrial journal, died in 1980, before Natan was freed.

February 11, 1986, when he arrived in Israel, celebrating with his mother 6 months later.

His mother, Ida Milgrom, visited him in prison and stubbornly waged a nine-year battle for her son's release from Soviet prison and labor camps. She was permitted to follow her son to Israel six months after he left the Soviet Union.

Chess master Boris Gelfand (left) plays a game of chess against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (far right) and Jewish Agency Chairman Natan Sharansky in 2010 (photo credit: Alex Kolomoisky/Flash90)  Boris Gelfand is a Soviet-born Israeli chess player. A six-time World Championship candidate, he won the Chess World Cup 2009 and the 2011 Candidates Tournament, making him challenger for the World Chess Championship 2012.

He had been a special child.  As a child, he was a chess prodigy. He performed in simultaneous and blindfold exhibitions, usually against adults. At the age of 15, he won the championship in his native Donetsk. Sharansky graduated with a degree in applied mathematics from Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology. When incarcerated in solitary confinement, he claims to have maintained his sanity by playing chess against himself in his mind. Sharansky beat the world chess champion Garry Kasparov in a simultaneous exhibition in Israel in 1996.

Natan Sharansky and Avital Sharansky have two daughters, Rachel and Hannah. In the Soviet Union, his application to marry Avital was denied by the authorities. They were married in a friend's apartment, in a ceremony not recognized by the government, as the USSR only recognized civil marriage and not religious marriage.

This means that all Jewish marriages were denied in Russia

during this period.

Sharansky was denied an exit visa to Israel in 1973. The reason given for denial of the visa was that he had been given access, at some point in his career, to information vital to Soviet national security and could not now be allowed to leave. After becoming a refusenik, Sharansky became a human rights activist, working as a translator for dissident and nuclear physicist Andrei Sakharov, and spokesman for the Moscow Helsinki Group and a leader for the rights of refuseniks.

On 15 March 1977 Sharansky was arrested by the KGB, then headed by Yuri Andropov, on multiple charges, including high treason and spying for several Americans. The accusation stated that he passed to the West lists of over 1,300 refuseniks, many of whom were denied exit visas because of their knowledge of state secrets, which resulted in a publication by Robert C. Toth, "Russ Indirectly Reveal 'State Secrets': Clues in Denials of Jewish Visas". High treason carried the death penalty. The following year, in 1978, he was sentenced to 13 years of forced labor. That means he had this grueling punishment to bear until 1981.

Alan Dershowitz became one of Sharansky's lawyers when he was imprisoned by the Soviets.  It was after his release that he made aliyah and eventually started his own political party, which won several seats in the 1996 election.  He wound up in Israel's cabinet by 1996.  I heard him speak at a synagogue in Portland, Oregon before 2009.

Due to his age and poor health, he was exempted from the standard compulsory three years' IDF service, but had to undergo three weeks of military training and do a stint in the Civil-Guard.

My husband was 42 when we entered Israel.  He had been in

the air force  in the states but had  developed a serious

physical condition, sarcoid.  We both  went through 3 days of

training in shooting a gun he used in the air force, he said.

We also did something like Civil guard going out on patrol with

others in a van.  I took my female German shepherd

with me, as husband and wife did this separately.

Anatoly Sharansky meeting then-Prime Minister Shimon Peres after his release from the Soviet Union

Sharansky was appointed Minister of Jerusalem Affairs.

From March 2003 – May 2005, he was Israel's Minister without Portfolio, responsible for Jerusalem's social and Jewish diaspora affairs.

Under this position, Sharansky chaired a secret committee that approved the confiscation of East Jerusalem property of West Bank Palestinians. This decision was reversed after an outcry from the Israeli left and the international community.  We're not a shy people.  When Israelis see a wrong, they speak out quickly.  Sharansky was learning.

Sharansky and President Ronald Reagan, December 1986

One must remember that his Russian background denied him any Jewish education, all religious services, all his Jewish culture that his parents had had.  Even learning Hebrew with Sarah must have been extremely difficult under the condition he was under.  Luckily he was bright.

Previously he served as the Deputy Prime Minister of Israel, Minister of Housing and Construction since March 2001, Interior Minister of Israel (July 1999 – resigned in July 2000), Minister of Industry and Trade (1996–1999).

He resigned from the cabinet in April 2005 to protest plans to withdraw Israeli settlements from the Gaza Strip and northern West Bank.

Sharansky is congratulated by President George W. Bush after receiving the Presidential Medal of Freedom, December 2006

He was re-elected to the Knesset in March 2006 as a member of the Likud Party. On 20 November 2006, he resigned from the Knesset.

In June 2009, Sharansky was elected to the Chair of the Executive of the Jewish Agency for Israel by the Jewish Agency Board of Governors. In September 2009 Sharansky secured $6 million from the Genesis Philanthropy Group for educational activities in the former Soviet Union.

He is a founding member of One Jerusalem.

I decided that he was hated  by my lawyer friend because he was connected to Likud and Netanyahu, and Netanyahu has been my idol;  a man who is the best speaker I've ever heard, and isn't even American with a vocabulary that beats most of us, and the ability to debate intelligently.  When we lived in Israel, Begin, Shamir and Peres were the Prime Ministers.

Years after his release, Sharansky stressed the need he maintained throughout his imprisonment to remain emotionally independent. He attributed his survival of the lengthy incarceration and the brutal conditions to his resistance to any sort of emotional surrender. Hence Sharansky's expression of the paradox that while an ordinary Russian, he was in fact a slave to the system; but that once he discovered his Jewish roots and was restricted for his allegiance to them, he was in reality a free man. Sharansky's memoirs of his years as a prisoner of Zion are described in his book Fear No Evil.  By Becoming a Jew which he was born into, he was no longer a slave to the system of the USSR.

Anti-Semitic Pervasiveness ; Why It Developed in Eastern Europe

 Nadene Goldfoot

Sisters in a shtetl in Anatevka, Ukraine as shown in Fiddler on the Roof  -living their life amid a lot of anti-Semitism

Tradition=from 613 Laws of Moses

ANATEVKA, Ukraine — Less than 20 miles outside of the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, there’s a little village inspired by Fiddler on the Roof that is playing an outsize role in the political scandal embroiling Washington, thanks to a cast of characters that includes the village’s honorary mayor.  And who’s he?  None other than Rudolph W. Giuliani, who was recently presented with an oversize ceremonial key to the village by its pro-Trump rabbi founder.

Anatevka, named after the village from the musical, was founded in 2014 by Rabbi Moshe Reuven Azman, primarily as a refuge for Jewish families displaced by Russia’s five-year war against Ukraine in the country’s eastern Donbass region that has killed around 13,000 people.

Anti-Semitism has been going on in the eastern European countries for centuries.  People of today ask why  this is, and conclude that Jews must have been despicable people to earn such hatred.

St Constantine developed from being the Roman Emperor  at the nudging of his mother, Helena.

Here's the facts as to why this has gone on for the past 2,000 years.  Ever since Europe converted to Christianity from their Romanized-held polytheistic beliefs in Olympus and their multiple gods with a king and queen of gods and with gods coming down on earth and taking women of the earth, producing half gods, they have regarded Jews, the only people on earth to maintain their belief in a one unseen G0d, as the "Christ Killer", an enemy and a threat to be treated as such.

The Europeans took the position that Jews were to be converted and so to be "saved", or to be killed, and least of all, to be expelled, or to be put to death with sword and fire.

In 866, the fight between early Christians and Heathens was fought between early England and the Vikings who had invaded.  This is depicted in THE LAST KINGDOM on Netflix.

The treatment of Jews by the people of eastern Europe, the Polish and Lithuanians,  wasn't much different from the outlook of early Christians.

(born November 10, 1483, Eisleben, Saxony [now in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany]—died February 18, 1546, Eisleben), German theologian and religious reformer:  Martin Luther, founder of the Lutheran Protestants, set out in his trying to convert Jews, with his "honest advice", how Jews should be treated in their communities.

1. Their synagogues should be set on fire, and whatever does not burn up should be covered or spread over with dirt so that no one may ever be able to see a cinder or stone of it.

2. Jewish homes should be broken down or destroyed.

3. Jews should then be put under one roof, or in a stable, like Gypsies, in order that they may realize that they are not masters in our land.

4. They should be put to work, to earn their living by the sweat of their noses, or, if regarded even then as too dangerous, these "poisonous bitter worms" should be stripped of their belongings which they have extorted usuriously from us and driven out of the country for all time.

Martin Luther was the catalyst of the 16th-century Protestant Reformation. Through his words and actions, Luther precipitated a movement that reformulated certain basic tenets of Christian belief and resulted in the division of Western Christendom between Roman Catholicism and the new Protestant traditions, mainly LutheranismCalvinismAnglicanism, the Anabaptists, and the anti-Trinitarians. He is one of the most influential figures in the history of Christianity.

Quite a show of Christian humility and love, eh?      They no more understood the message brought to the masses by the story of Jesus than understanding the man in the moon.  To them it was a tool to use as becoming racists.  They hated Gypsies and Jews and Vikings and killed them for their differences.  .

This is only typical of the anti-Jewish venom of his time.  Mass expulsion was a commonplace of medieval policy.  Jews had already been driven out of almost every European country including England, France, Spain, Portugal and Bohemia, with more following.  In Italy Jews were confined to the ghetto with Venice having the first one.  Tsarist Russia confined Jews in the Pale of Settlement, and so expulsion and oppression continued until the 19th century.

Even when attitudes were softening,, no decade passed without Jews in one European state or another  being accused of murdering Christian children in order to use their blood in the baking of Passover bread.  This "blood libel"  came as it did with outbursts of popular violence against Jews, reflected deep prejudices which no amount of modernity or liberal education seemed able to overcome.  Even the knowledge that Jews were not to   injest any type of blood, animal or human, unlike all other people did not stop the accusations. That's part of our Kashrut laws, handed down from Moses over 3,000 years ago.

Finally, today's findings of 2022,  have a Jew as president of Ukraine,  though fighting for his life, with Russia out to kill him.

Credit...Brendan Hoffman for The New York Times

Volodymyr Zelensky,  Jewish  with Jewish parents , was born in the industrial metropolis of Kryvyy Rih in southern Ukraine. A Jewish boy is to circumcised at 8 days old, and bar mitzvahed at age 13.  Russia is a country outlawing religion, so if his parents  were able to bring this about, it's a miracle.

It was his fellow Jews who were against his running as president.  "They said, ‘He should not run because we will have pogroms here again in two years if things go wrong,’” said Rabbi Kaminezki, the chief rabbi in Dnipro, the capital of Ukraine’s Dnipropetrovsk region."  Well, 3 years have gone by and the problem is not with Zelensky being Jewish.  It's with  Russia's Putin and his goals of being like the old Russian Czars.  This has been the Jewish attitude about "not mixing in."  Jews have been accused of creating bad weather, things they have not been involved in at all.  To take on the role of President has been a brave and amazing act; which worked so well on TV that he took the chance that it would in reality.

"When Zelensky was a small child, his family relocated to ErdenetMongolia, for four years before returning to Kryvyy Rih, where Zelensky entered school. Like many people from Ukraine’s Dnipropetrovsk region, he grew up as a native Russian speaker, but he also acquired fluency in both Ukrainian and English.  He's trilingual, as many are in this part of the world. If he could read Hebrew, he'd be almost quadralingual.   In 1995 he entered Kryvyy Rih Economic Institute, the local campus of Kyiv National Economic University, and in 2000 he graduated with a law degree."

He was a Ukrainian actor and comedian who was elected president of Ukraine in 2019. Although he was a political novice, Zelensky’s anti-corruption platform won him widespread support, and his significant online following translated into a solid electoral base. He won a landslide victory over incumbent Petro Poroshenko in the second round of the 2019 presidential election.

Zelensky didn't run for safety, but he and his wife remain in Kiev leading their brave people to fight for their country.  He's putting himself in front of hungry lions by doing this, and the risk is high that he will be assassinated by the Russian invading army.

Russia's Tactic of "Nazi" Accusations of Zelensky

 Nadene Goldfoot

Putin is claiming that Zelensky and his parliament are Nazis in their treatment of the Ukrainians on the Eastern part of their country, the Donbas region.  Donetst and Luhansk are ethnically more Russian than the rest of Ukraine. They speak Russian.  "Putin’s formal recognition of the Donetsk People’s Republic and Luhansk People’s Republic signaled an end to a 7 year-old peace deal known as the Minsk agreement. Now, the fate of the region remains unclear, but it has fallen into the Russian hands..

Zelensky is Jewish, the grandson of Holocaust victims.  He was never a politician, voted as president for these very reasons.  He replaced a president who was embroiled in the current phase all over the world of greasing palms to change their governments' paths.  The Ukrainians demanded honesty for a change, sincerity, and they got it in Zelensky.  The tide had turned.  Jews were no longer a someone to hate, a piranha to avoid, their scapegoat.  Zelensky would never act like the Nazis to any people.  He's the last regime to do that.  Any act of cruelty does not come from  his authority, you can bet your bottom dollar on that fact.

Calling the Zelensky regime "Nazis" is the current ploy used by all the liars who are in a government position.  First used by the Nazi Hitler, gullible people tend to believe the loudest voices,  and went along with the shpiels  fed to them.  It has since been used by all Czarist leaders from Russia to Hamas, etc.  Russia's propaganda machine is full of you know what, deceiving their population as to why the need to invade Ukraine.  The numbers of Russian soldiers killed so far is extremely low on the Russian side and extremely high on the Ukrainian side.

A man walks past an abandoned building in the Donetsk region town of Avdiivka

Ukraine officially declared itself an independent country on 24 August 1991, when the communist Supreme Soviet (parliament) of Ukraine proclaimed that Ukraine would no longer follow the laws of USSR and only the laws of the Ukrainian SSR, de facto declaring Ukraine's independence from the Soviet Union.  They've been their own man for the past almost 31 years.  Putin decided that he wanted them back in the union of USSR, which he is trying to re-create again.

Ukraine has had a taste of freedom in their politics and they like it.  They want to be a part of Europe and Russia is against that!  This is the result.

"How Ya Gonna Keep 'em Down on the Farm (After They've Seen Paree?)" is a World War I song that rose to popularity after the war had ended. The lyrics highlight concern that American soldiers from rural environments would not want to return to farm life after experiencing the European city life and culture of Paris during World War I.

                                                                                                                           American soldiers at War

The US was never worried about losing citizens to other ways or countries, forcing them to stay on their farms.  If you have something great to offer, as the United States has always had, you keep on improving it to make it even better, and you will find yourself with people clamoring to enter, not to leave, as has happened to the USA.  The trick is not to follow the ways of Europe, such as socialism, but stay the course of being an American country with its own unique value system; being great for one and all.  To be an example of living for others should be this country's motto.

Putin says he deserves Ukraine as consolation after losing the White House, quotes the New Yorker.
NATO Forces -  North Atlantic Treaty Organization:
Allies implemented the 2016 Warsaw Summit decisions to establish NATO’s forward presence in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland and to develop a tailored forward presence in the Black Sea region. These decisions demonstrate Allies’ solidarity, determination and ability to defend Alliance territory.  They're also remembering the Nazi incursions into their homelands in the 1940's.  Now it's Russia they worry about, and Russia worries about them interfering with their dreams.

Russia is the huge yellow country on the right.  A section of Russia lies between Lithuania and Poland.  Belarus has been taken over by Russian domination, cooperating with them. like Syria.  We now watch on our TVs how Russia is encircling Ukraine, ready for the occupation and how the brave Ukrainians are standing their ground, fighting for their independence, their distain of Russian manipulation.

Putin has become paranoid.  He fears Ukraine belonging to NATO, which has been extremely hard to enter, like a prestigious fraternity.  NATO refuses to enter and fight with Ukraine, even though it is turning into a mass slaughter, though Ukraine is holding out amazingly well, the best fighters of all of Europe without a doubt.  It's because they have everything to lose;  their country.  Israel goes through this same experience, and as Golda Meir explained, "We have no where else to go."  The United States displayed this same gutsy quality in 1776 against the British in gaining their independence on July 4, 1776.

Nazis practiced unthinkable acts against 6 million Jews in squashing their lives; comparable to the shocking acts of Vikings of the Dark Ages.  They not only killed but tortured Jews in every respect.  The Jews were civilians, not soldiers, and they had suddenly become something like hunted-down animals to the Nazis.  it was unworthy of the homo-sapien population of 1939-1945, only showing their blood-thirsty tendencies had not advanced a hoot since the Viking days.

Finally, end of WWIi and America rejoiced

World War II was the deadliest military conflict in history. An estimated total of 70–85 million people perished, or about 3% of the 1940 world population (est. 2.3 billion).

1945 should have seen the end of unbearable hatred and war, but it hasn't happened.  What Putin imagines what Ukraine has done to his Russian folk is what he would do to the Ukrainians and is doing to them now.  It's in his mind and heart.  I'm going to believe that though Ukraine's Eastern front has been more Russian than Ukrainian, and both have their own separate languages distinguishing them, they have been exposed to a more honest and improved people of Ukraine.

In an undated photo taken during World War II, a Jewish man in western Ukraine is attacked by a mob next to a bust of Lenin.

The native Ukrainian's ancestors were horrible to their Jews, but after these several generations, have grown and developed into admirable people, amazingly actually voting for a Jew, finding him capable and likeable.  I'd say the moshiach has been on their doorstep for such a development. If they have been able to see Jews as people like themselves, surely they've seen their cousins in the Doubas region as people they'd treat as they would want to be treated. Ukrainians are a kinder people.

Putin cannot use this ploy of them disrespecting laws of Humanitarianism of people in force today.   The rules of war, or international humanitarian law (as it is known formally) are a set of international rules that set out what can and cannot be done during an armed conflict. The main purpose of international humanitarian law (IHL) is to maintain some humanity in armed conflicts, saving lives and reducing suffering.  The Russians are breaking all the laws, hitting civilan centers; orphanages, kindergartens, hospitals, homes, etc.

AMERICAN JEWS fOR UKRAINE

 Nadene Goldfoot

Dead Soviet civilians near Minsk, Belarus,    1943

We American Jews, in remembrance of the 3 million Jews that lived in Ukraine, our relatives, before World War II, are on Ukraine's side in this horrible Nazi-like invasion and slaughter of Ukraine by Russia. We support their acts of self-defense. We will not forget what happened to our people.

August 1939, Germany and the Soviet Union signed a non-aggression treaty.

Kiev, 23 June 1941, 81 years ago, 3 generations since then:

On June 22, 1941, Nazi Germany launched a surprise attack against the Soviet Union, its ally in the war against Poland.

By the end of the year, German troops had advanced hundreds of miles to the outskirts of Moscow. Soon after the invasion, mobile killing units began the mass murder of Soviet Jews. German military and civilian occupation policies led to the deaths of millions of Soviet prisoners of war and Soviet civilians.

World War II losses of the Soviet Union from all related causes were about 27 million, both civilian and military,

How can Putin bear to lie with every word he says?  Everything has turned out to be a lie, the opposite of the truth.

      Starting attack in Leningrad battlefront

22 June 1941 with the invasion called Barbarossa, 80% of the German army attacked the Russians:

How can Russia do this detestable act after living through such  an attack  in World War II?

Soviet prisoners of war
The German armies eventually captured some 5 million Soviet Red Army troops. The Nazis deliberately starved to death or otherwise killed 3.3 million Soviet prisoners of war, and millions of civilians, as the "Hunger Plan" worked to solve German food shortages and exterminate the Slavic population through starvation.

It wasn't the Ukraines who attacked Russia in 1941, it was the Germans-Nazis.  How can you treat Ukraine as the Germans did in their plundering of Poland?  How can any of you sleep at night?
