How Israel Got In The Lebanon Mess In The First Place

 Nadene Goldfoot

Smoke rises over Amman during clashes between the Jordanian military and the Palestinian fedayeen, 1 October 1970 in their BLACK SEPTEMBER.

After 1968, militant groups that formed the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) and other Palestinian groups established a quasi-state in southern Lebanon, using it as a base for attacks against civilian targets in northern Israel as well as terror attacks on diaspora Israelis and other targets worldwide. This violence was exacerbated by an influx of some 3,000 PLO militants who had fled Jordan following the defeat of Palestinian groups to Jordanian forces during the Black September conflict; the Palestinian political cause began to regroup in southern Lebanon and re-shifted the focus of its attacks to Israeli targets, and did so via the Israel–Lebanon border. Israel responded to Palestinian attacks from Lebanon with extensive air raids against PLO bases of operations.

The Coastal Road Massacre of an Israeli bus and occupants by Palestinian terrorists

The coastal road massacre occurred on 11 March 1978, when Palestinian militants hijacked a bus on the Coastal Highway of Israel and murdered its occupants; 38 Israeli civilians, including 13 children, were killed as a result of the attack while 76 more were wounded. The attack was planned by the influential Palestinian militant leader Khalil al-Wazir (aka Abu Jihad) and carried out by Fatah, a Palestinian nationalist party co-founded by al-Wazir and Yasser Arafat in 1959. The initial plan of the militants was to seize a luxury hotel in the Israeli city of Tel Aviv and take tourists and foreign ambassadors hostage to exchange them for Palestinian prisoners in Israeli custody.  It turns out to be the beginning taking Israeli hostages!  The militants then walked less than a mile up to the four-lane highway, opened fire at passing cars, and hijacked a white Mercedes taxi, killing its occupants. Setting off down the highway toward Tel Aviv, they hijacked a chartered bus carrying Egged bus drivers and their families on a day outing, along the Coastal Highway. Although Abu Jihad had ordered them to seize a hotel, the militants improvised and changed the nature of their attack due to the dozens of hostages in their hands. The militants drove down the coastal highway, shooting and throwing grenades at passing cars. They also shot at the passengers and threw at least one body out of the bus. At one point they commandeered Bus 901, traveling from Tel Aviv to Haifa, taking its passengers hostage as well, and forced the passengers from the first bus to board it.

At one point, the bus stopped, and one of the perpetrators got out and fired directly into a passing car, killing a teenager, Imri Tel-Oren, and injuring his father Hanoch. Sharon Tel-Oren, Imri's mother, testified: "We were in our station wagon, driving along the coastal highway. We saw something odd ahead – a bus, but it seemed to be stopped. Then we saw someone lying on the road. There was shattered glass all over, children screaming. Then we heard the gunshots. Imri was asleep in the back seat. The bullet passed through the front seat and hit his head, killing him instantly. My husband was shot in the arm, and lost the movement in his fingers."

Police were alerted to the attack; their cars caught up to the bus and trailed it. Although the militants fired at the pursuing police cars, policemen did not return fire, fearing they would hit the civilians inside the bus. Police quickly set up a roadblock, but the militants plowed the bus through it and continued their journey. According to Khaled Abu Asba, one of the two surviving attackers, police set up multiple roadblocks, and there was an exchange of fire at every intersection.

This is important to remember:  The PLO claimed responsibility for the attack, which was planned by influential Fatah leader Abu Jihad. The attack's purpose was to disrupt ongoing Israeli-Egyptian peace negotiations. Yasser Arafat and Abu Jihad feared that a truce between Israel and Egypt would be detrimental to their cause. The operation was considered to be of such importance that Abu Jihad, together with his operations commander for Lebanon Azmi Zair, personally briefed the participants.

                                   Israeli soldiers during the invasion

1. The 1978 South Lebanon conflict, also known as the First Israeli invasion of Lebanon and codenamed Operation Litani by Israel, began when Israel invaded southern Lebanon up to the Litani River in March 1978.

It was in response to the Coastal Road massacre near Tel Aviv by Palestinian militants based in Lebanon. The conflict resulted in the deaths of  20 Israelis, and an exaggerated number furnished by the Palestinians of 1,100–2,000 Lebanese and Palestinians, the internal displacement mentioned by Arafat of  a possible 100,000 to 250,000 people in Lebanon.

The Israel Defense Forces gained a military victory against the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) as the latter was forced to withdraw from southern Lebanon, preventing it from launching attacks on Israel from across its land border with Lebanon. In response to the outbreak of hostilities, the United Nations Security Council adopted Resolution 425 and Resolution 426 on 19 March 1978, which called on Israel to immediately withdraw its troops from Lebanon and established the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).

On May 24, 2000, Israel pulled back from southern Lebanon to the international border line, in compliance with UN Security Council Resolution 425. Although Lebanon claimed that Israel was still holding some Lebanese territory, the Shaba'a Farms, UN Security Council confirmed that Israel had indeed withdrawn its forces from all of Lebanese territory.

2. Following the withdrawal, thousands of Lebanese, mostly Christian Maronites, fled to Israel, while the Islamist fundamentalist Hizballah took over the whole of southern Lebanon. Despite the Israeli full withdrawal, terrorist organizations in Lebanon, mainly Hizballah, continued to carry out terrorist attacks against Israeli civilian and military targets in northern Israel. One of these attacks - a cross-border raid and shelling of Israeli towns by Hizballah on 12 July 2006, which resulted in the killing of 8 Israeli soldiers and abducting two others (who died in captivity) - was the immediate cause of the Second Lebanon War (12 July - 14 August 2006).Notice; 2 hostages taken who died while being held.

3. On 1 October, 2024, the Israeli military began a full-scale invasion of southern Lebanon, also known as the Third Lebanon War by some Israeli sources, although it had been conducting limited ground operations for some time.

Israel and the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah started exchanging fire along the Israel–Lebanon border and in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights on 8 October 2023, after the shocking 7th October attack including mutilations by Hamas along the Gaza border. Israel also carried out airstrikes throughout Lebanon and in Syria. The clashes were part of the spillover of the Israel–Hamas war and the largest escalation of the Hezbollah–Israel conflict since the 2006 Lebanon War.

4. On 30 September 2024, Israel escalated the conflict into a ground invasion of Lebanon. There was a significant escalation in September 2024, starting with the Lebanon pager explosions, which targeted Hezbollah and were widely attributed to Israel. Forty-two people were killed and thousands wounded. On 23 September, Israel began an aerial bombing campaign throughout Lebanon, code-named Operation Northern Arrows, which included assassinations of senior Hezbollah commanders. Israel said its attacks would continue until its citizens could return safely to the north.

It's still going on to this date of November 25, 2024.

Lebanon's Hezbollah, That Tiny Nation North of Israel-Friend Once, Foe Now

Nadene Goldfoot

Paris of the Orient; Beirut, Lebanon before August 2020
At least 137 people were killed and 5,000 wounded in a massive explosion that shook Beirut on Tuesday, August 4, 2020, according to Lebanon's health minister. It was not caused by Israel, though a few people  proclaimed the cause to be Israel.  Lebanon is an enemy state being Hezbollah, the terrorist organization, has been attacking since their inception, it is not what Israel would do.  The cause has been found; Russia's ammonium nitrate improperly stored, for or by Hezbollah, no doubt, burst into fire caused by a fire next door to the warehouse.  Israel has had a hot and cold relationship with Lebanon for years due to Hezbollah.  Russia had to have the Middle East under its power so needed to keep Assad of Syria in power, so Russia wanted to protect Iran's only Arab ally, and allowed Iran be a protectorate to to Hezbollah, and gave Iran the chance to establish a military presence in Syria, which has leaked over to Lebanon, being Hezbollah is from Lebanon. This is why the ammonium nitrate was allowed to be stored there for the past 6 years. Don't you think?

Update: The Beirut Port after Tuesday’s explosion that killed at least 157 and wounded more than 5,000.  Friday evening.
Emir Faisal in 1919 said as leader of the Arab World:
"We Arabs, especially the educated among us, look with deepest sympathy on the Zionist movement...We will wish the Jews a hearty welcome home....our two movements complement one another."  At the time, Beirut was the Paris of the Orient, the vacation spot for Arabs.  It consisted of mostly Muslims with longstanding Christians living there as well.

Major Haddad was just such a man, leader of the Christian Militia in 1980.  He was not liked that well by the Muslims, however, but a friend to Israel whose men guarded the border, with permission from General Ariel Sharon of IDF.  He would do his R&R in Haifa's hospital.

Since 1919, the Arabs have been following people like Haj Amin al-Husseini, the Sherif of Jerusalem, AKA Grand Mufti.  and they have closed ranks and refuse to accept Israel, turning into her enemy.  Lebanon has been such a neighbor.

On 23 August 1982 Bachir Gemayel was democratically elected president   by the majority of Christian and Muslim MPs while the country was torn by civil war and occupied by Israel, Syria and Palestinian factions. Gemayel started enacting policies to disarm Christian militias, ordered the Lebanese Army to enter West Beirut for the first time since the start of the war and forced Yasser Arafat and the PLO to leave Lebanon. On 14 September 1982, before he could take office, he was assassinated, along with 26 others, when a bomb exploded in Beirut Phalange headquarters in Achrafiyeh by Habib Tanious Shartouni, a member of the Syrian Social Nationalist Party. The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation blamed the Syrian Social Nationalist Party (SSNP) for the terrorist attack.

The Israeli occupation of southern Lebanon took place after Israel invaded Lebanon during the 1982 Lebanon War and subsequently retained its forces to support the Christian South Lebanon Army led by Haddad in Southern Lebanon.

Eventually attacks led to the withdrawal of the international peacekeeping force from Lebanon, where they had been stationed following the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) withdrawal in the aftermath of Israel's 1982 invasion of Lebanon.  I was in Israel at the time, and saw the IDF going up the mountain towards Safed while I was going down the mountain in a bus.  The PLO had stationed themselves at the Sabra and Shatilla camps there and the Christian Militia of Lebanon wanted the chance to go in and stop them, so Sharon allowed them, not realizing what Hadad allowed them to do.  It was Sharon who took the blame of a massacre.  "Saad Haddad (1936 – January 14, 1984) was the founder and head of the South Lebanon Army (SLA) during the Lebanese Civil War. For years Haddad was closely collaborating and receiving arms and political support from Israel against Lebanese government forces, Hezbollah, and the Syrian Army. Haddad died of cancer in his house in Marjayoun.

On October 23, 1983, two truck bombs struck buildings in Beirut, Lebanon, housing American and French service members of the Multinational Force in Lebanon, a military peacekeeping operation during the Lebanese Civil War.  241 US servicemen were killed by Hezbollah at the Marine base there.  Hezbollah is Lebanon's terrorist organization but Iranian backed.  It uses the Lebanese population as human shields, and have hidden its weapons and terrorists within the civilian infrastructure.   The explosion that just happened at the waterfront is an example of their building up their weapons to use against Israel that were not stored carefully, a death trap for their civilians waiting to happen.

From 1985 through 2000, Israel continued to fund the South Lebanon Army. In 1992, Hezbollah won ten out of 128 seats in the Lebanese National Assembly.  On 7 October 2000 Hezbollah attacked Israel. In a cross-border raid, 3 Israeli soldiers, who were patrolling the Lebanese border were attacked and abducted. The event escalated into a 2-month fire exchanges between Israel and Hezbollah, primarily at the Hermon ridge.

Dust rises after the impact of two bombs dropped during an IAF airstrike on Tyre, Lebanon in 2006.

By 2006, 165 Israeli civilians and soldiers were killed during a war with Hezbollah in Lebanon, THE HEZBOLLAH WAR from 2005-2006. "Two Israeli soldiers were abducted and taken by Hezbollah to Lebanon. ... Hezbollah then launched more rockets into northern Israel and engaged the IDF in guerrilla warfare from hardened positions. The conflict is believed to have killed between 1,191 and 1,300 Lebanese people, and 165 Israelis.   Israel was engaged in a 34-day military conflict in Lebanon, Northern Israel and the Golan Heights. The principal parties were Hezbollah paramilitary forces and the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). The conflict started on 12 July 2006, and continued until a United Nations-brokered ceasefire went into effect in the morning on 14 August 2006, though it formally ended on 8 September 2006 when Israel lifted its naval blockade of Lebanon. Due to unprecedented Iranian military support to Hezbollah before and during the war, some consider it the first round of the Iran–Israel proxy conflict, rather than a continuation of the Arab–Israeli conflict.

Missiles shot by Hezbollah

It is Hezbollah who needs the weapons.  These terrorists already have had about 150,000 rockets and missiles capable of striking anywhere in Israel.  They have the terrorists; 45,000 active and reserve fighters are signed on, and 6,000 to 8,000 more waiting for orders in Syria.  They can launch 1,5000 rockets per day into Israel.  Hezbollah has dug tunnels to infiltrate and attack Israel as well.
Update: 8/26/20, Israeli officials estimate that Hezbollah possesses 130,000 rockets and missiles capable of striking virtually anywhere in Israel, and has gained valuable battlefield experience fighting alongside Iranian troops in Syria.

Even so, when the explosion occurred, the mayor of Jerusalem let Lebanon know that Israel was ready to off any medical aid they needed, and that war's politics wouldn't interfere with Israel giving aid and comfort to Lebanese people at such a time of crisis.
Authorities in Lebanon have detained 16 people as part of an urgent investigation into the enormous explosion that devastated Beirut's port area and much of the city on Tuesday. The blast has been traced to an estimated 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate stored in a warehouse; not caused by any bombing by Israel as some first thought.

Lebanon was taken over by Ayatollah Khomeini's students in Nejaf in Lebanon after the Iranian Revolution  in 1982.  Hezbollah was created to get the Shia groups into one group to fight the Israelis and uplift their position in Lebanon from the Sunnis and Christians.  Syrians were occupying Lebanon's eastern highlands at the time and they permitted the Hezbollahs on a base in the Bekaa valley.  They are a part of establishing the Islamic State across the Arab world.  Their goal is to eliminate Israel and fight Western imperialism.
Saint George Maronite Cathedral and the Mohammad Al-Amin Mosque, Beirut.

A 2012 study conducted by Statistics Lebanon, a Beirut-based research firm, found that Lebanon's population is estimated to be 54% Muslim (27% Shia; 27% Sunni), 5.6% Druze, 40.4% Christian (21% Maronite, 8% Greek Orthodox, 5% Melkite, 6.4% other Christian denominations like Armenian Orthodox, Armenian Catholic, Syriac,Catholic, Syriac Orthodox, Roman Catholic, Chaldean, Assyrian, and Copt. Haddad was a Maronite.

LEBANESE AND ISRAELI MARONITES AGAINST HEZBOLLAH TERRORISTS

Nadene Goldfoot

Haifa, Israel's Maronite Christian Church
The Maronites are a Christian group[ who adhere to the Syriac Maronite Church with the largest population around Mount Lebanon in Lebanon. The Maronite Church is an Eastern Catholic sui iuris particular church in full communion with the Pope and the Catholic Church,  "
Historically, Maronites have been rural people. They are thought to trace their roots back to the 4th Century. In the 7th Century, due to religious persecution, they withdrew from the coastal regions to the mountainous areas of Lebanon and Syria, where they lived in isolation."
Israel has about 7,000 Maronite Christians, a branch very much like Western Catholics.  "The archeparchy includes all the faithful of the Maronite Church who live in Israel. The archeparchial seat is the city of Haifa, where the Saint Louis the King Cathedral is located. The territory is divided into eight parishes.
In the archeparchy in 2013, there were approximately 7,000 members, 9 priests and 8 parishes."
Christian leaders in Jerusalem, Israel
In 2011 there were 4,196,453 Lebanese with
60% being Muslims in Lebanon.

"Members of the Christian community in Israel are bringing back an ancient language spoken by Jesus, and are finding fellow speakers in unexpected parts of the world."  Jish is the only village in Israel with a majority Maronite population. Muslims constitute about 35 percent of the residents, with a smattering of Melkite Christians making up the tiny remainder. They are guiding those in Sweden and Holland.

"Phoenicianism is a form of Lebanese nationalism, first adopted by Lebanese Christians, primarily Maronites, at the time of the creation of Greater Lebanon. It constitutes identification of the Lebanese people with the ancient Phoenicians." They have the history of King Solomon of Israel being friends with the King of  Tyre, Hiram.  Tyre was a major city of the Phoenicians, living in today's Lebanon.  "It promotes the view that Lebanese people, or sometimes exclusively just Lebanese Christians, are not Arabs and that the Lebanese speak a distinct language and have their own culture, separate from that of the surrounding Middle Eastern countries. Supporters of this theory of Lebanese ethnogenesis maintain that the Lebanese are descended from Phoenicians and are not Arabs. Some also maintain that Levantine Arabic is not an Arabic variety, rather a variation of Neo-Aramaic, but has become a distinctly separate language."

"Cardinal Bechara Rai, head of the Maronite Catholic Church, center, arrives to visit a church in Jaffa, a mixed Jewish and Arab neighborhood in Tel Aviv, Israel, Monday, May 26, 2014. (photo credit: AP Photo/Sebastian Scheiner)"

Recently in 2014, "Maronite Cardinal Bechara Ra’i, here with Pope Francis, defies threats from home and goes to Jaffa, plans to head to the north next."    He made a first visit of a Maronite Cardinal to Israel since 1948's birth of Israel.  Maronites seemed to have risen out of Antioch, Turkey's meetings of the Christian organizing going on in the 300s CE.  Lebanon was part of the Ottoman Empire, close to Jerusalem.

.  "Cardinal Bechara Ra’i, a Maronite Catholic, made the trip despite opposition at home. His critics have said the pilgrimage implies normalization with Israel at a time when the two countries remain formally at war."  Lebanon, Israel's northern neighbor  along the coast, is made up of Maronite Christians who hold the position of being the group chosen for the position of president.  7,000 Maronite Christians are living in Israel out of a total of about 3,537,660 in the world.  Other Catholics also live in Lebanon, of which Major Hadad, a former friend of Israel who has passed away, was a member.

Looking back, in the year of 1960, Lebanon had a population of 1.8 million people.   Today they have about 6.1 million.  Israel has 8,548,870 out of which 6 million are Jews.  "The IDF does not conscript Arab citizens of Israel who are Muslim or Christian, however, increasing numbers choose to volunteer for military service. Many Bedouins enlist on a voluntary basis. For Druze and Circassian men, enlistment is mandatory "through their own choice.

To Israelis they are the beloved IDF, Israel Defense Force.
Note:  It's a country on the defense, protecting their
population, and has had to do this since its inception in 1948.
Jews, the world's scapegoats, have had a hard time getting
other religious people to accept them in a world
they had been driven out of by the Romans.  Now,
besides the obvious rockets, mortars and missiles,
BDS threatens them coming right from the Middle East
that like a virus, spreads its devilment all over the world
to use against Israel.

Below you see a Maronite Festival celebration going on in
Miami, Florida, USA where they must be living.

Maronite Christians make up about 21% of the population of Lebanon.
The Druze and Maronite Christians were at war with each other in 1860 with the Druze being the overlords of the Maronites.

According to Wikipedia, "Other religions account for only an estimated 0.3% of the population- mainly foreign temporary workers, according to the CIA Factbook. There remains a very small Jewish population, traditionally centered in Beirut. It has been larger: most Jews left the country after the Lebanese Civil War (1975–1990) as thousands of Lebanese did at that time."

Lebanon used to be the playground, the Paris of the Middle East, where the Arabs would go for their Rest and Recreation moments.  Life has done a 180 degree turn-around today.  No more.

Today they have all been taken over by Hezbollah terrorists from iran and look towards Israel as a place to destroy.  Hezbollah possess more than 150,000 rockets and missiles that can carry nuclear warheads, many of which are capable of striking any location in Israel right now.  They have dug tunnels under homes in Lebanon going into israel. for attack and kill purposes.

IDF of Israel fights against Hezbollah
President Trump is now talking about bringing on a peace between Lebanon and Israel.  BEIRUT — U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Friday called on the Lebanese people to stand up to Hezbollah's "criminality, terror and threats," and claimed U.S. sanctions on Iran and its Lebanese Shiite ally were working and that more pressure on them was forthcoming. The Lebanese Foreign Minister stood next to him  insisted that Hezbollah is "a Lebanese group that is not a terrorist organization and was elected by the people."  My comment is that he is very weak.  The problem lies with the Golan Heights and Trump announcing Friday that he will recognize Israel's soverignty over it.  "The Golan Heights is a narrow strip of mountainous land, roughly 1,800sq km, bordering Syria, Israel, Jordan and Lebanon."

Prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed that the Golan Heights will always be part of Israel, and Syria, which does not recognize Israel.  Syria wants the territory back..  It would be Hezbollah speaking in place of Syria that want it back in order to attack Israel more easily.
It is a strategically important territory for the two enemy countries with its elevated position – nearly 3,000m above sea level – allowing a viewpoint into southern Syria, northern Israel and southern Lebanon.
Hezbollah terrorists against Israeiis
When Syria had control of the Golan Heights, its military was able to use positions to shell Israeli communities below. That went on incessantly.  They want to destroy Israel.  They were part of the Kartoum Conference in Africa where the Muslims said NO 3 times to offers of peace.  Writers seem to leave out objectives of countries which is most important.  Israel does not use the height to destroy or be on the offensive against Syria but can use it for DEFENSE.  A country as small as Israel is needs all the defense it can get in boundaries from  today's weapons.
But Israel’s possession of the land also gives its military a clear view into Syria, all the way to the capital Damascus some 60km away.
