The Breeding Place For Terrorism: Yunis Refugee Camp in Gaza

 Nadene Goldfoot

When a group of people want to put an end to others' stealing and killing, they put them in Jail !  People have been doing that since the beginning of civilization, otherwise they'd  just kill them.

Yahya Ibrahim Hassan Sinwar was just such a culprit and was born on
29 October 1962 in  Khan Yunis, a city, then in the Egyptian-ruled Gaza Strip.
According to the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics, Khan Yunis had a population of 205,125 in 2017. Khan Yunis, which lies only four kilometres (2+1⁄2 miles) east of the Mediterranean Sea, has a semi-arid climate with temperature of 30 °C maximum (86 F)  in summer and 10 °C minimum in winter, with an annual rainfall of approximately 260 mm (10.2 in).

After 1959, the All-Palestine Government of Gaza Strip was abolished and the city was included in the United Arab Republic, which was shortly disestablished and the Gaza Strip came under the direct Egyptian military occupation rule." All references to an independent Gaza were abolished and Egyptian administration was officially imposed. In this move, Nasser de facto canceled any official Palestinian self-rule. In 1962 the Egyptian government established a Palestinian Legislative Council elected by the population.
It was in 1967, during the Six-Day War, that Israel occupied Khan Yunis again."
                    UNRWA Refugee Camp in Gaza

In 1994, governance of Khan Yunis devolved (having had power transferred or delegated to a lower level, especially from central government to local or regional administration.)  to the Palestinian Authority, and it soon became a source of terrorist attacks against neighboring Jews dwelling in Gush Katif, the bloc of Jewish communities in the Gaza Strip dismantled during Israel’s unilateral disengagement in 2005.

Here, they had more access to like thinkers, and plotted their next step

As a result of the 1993-1995 Oslo Accords, Khan Yunis and most of the Gaza Strip (excluding Israeli settlements and military areas) were placed under the control of the Palestinian Authority.  The Palestinian Authority came into control of the entirety of the Strip following the 2005 Israeli disengagement. However, following the Battle of Gaza in 2007, Hamas took over the Gaza Strip and established its own government in the region.

During the ongoing Israel–Hamas war, Israel has bombed Khan Yunis along with other cities in the Gaza Strip as part of an offensive against Hamas. The Israeli Air Force extensively bombed much of the city, including the Hamad City apartment complex. Local sources have reported numerous civilian casualties in Khan Yunis as a result of Israeli bombings, which Palestinian news agency Wafa put at "at least 70" as of December 3. The Al Qarara Cultural Museum was destroyed in an explosion as a result of an Israeli attack in October 2023, part of an offensive that reportedly targeted civilian homes and mosques in the vicinity. Israeli armored units began entering the outskirts of the city in December 2023.

After several months of fighting, Israeli forces ended up withdrawing from Khan Yunis and most of the southern Gaza Strip. Having failed to root out Hamas from Khan Yunis, Israeli forces began a second invasion of the city in late July 2024, which also ended in an Israeli withdrawal. Israeli forces invaded Khan Yunis yet again in August 2024, and withdrew once more at the end of the month.

  • Gaza Strip: The Gaza Strip has eight official and no unofficial refugee camps, and 1,221,110 registered refugees.  Khan Yunis is one of them.  It was established in 1949 by UNRWA and has 87,816 population with a density of 0.549 per Km2.
  •
After 1959, the All-Palestine Government of Gaza Strip was abolished and the city was included in the United Arab Republic, which was shortly disestablished and the Gaza Strip came under the direct Egyptian military occupation rule.  Sinwar was born during this period in 1962.

When the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) was founded in 1964, Nasser of Egypt  proclaimed that it would hold authority over Gaza, but that authority was never conferred in practice. A year later, conscription was instituted for the Palestinian Liberation Army.

In 1967, during the Six-Day War, Israel occupied Khan Yunis again.

As a result of the 1993-1995 Oslo Accords, Khan Yunis and most of the Gaza Strip (excluding Israeli settlements and military areas) were placed under the control of the Palestinian Authority  (PA--not Hamas.)

This was a time when Israel had been attacked by Palestinians ferociously.  "The Israeli–Palestinian conflict escalated during the Second Intifada. In January and February 2002, 71 people were killed on all sides during attacks from Palestinian terrorists and the Israeli army. March and April 2002 saw a dramatic increase in attacks against Israelis by Palestinian militants such as Hamas, Islamic Jihad and the Fatah-affiliated Al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades. In addition to numerous shooting and grenade attacks, fifteen suicide bombings were carried out in March, an average of one suicide bombing every two days. March 2002 became known in Israel as "Black March". The large number of attacks severely disrupted daily life in Israel."

Khan Yunis was the site of Israeli helicopter attacks in August 2001 and October 2002 that left several civilians killed, hundreds wounded and civilian buildings within the vicinity destroyed.

The Palestinian Authority came into control of the entirety of the Strip following the 2005 Israeli disengagement. However, following the Battle of Gaza in 2007, Hamas took over the Gaza Strip and established its own government in the region.

Last  7 November of 2023, "after Israel had surrounded Gaza City, it claimed it had "trapped" Sinwar in a bunker there. Israeli military authorities later claimed he was in Khan Yunis in an underground bunker. Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant said: "We will get to Yahya Sinwar and eliminate him. If the residents of Gaza get there ahead of us, that will shorten the war." Leaflets allegedly dropped by Israel into Gaza proclaimed a bounty of $400,000 for providing information on Sinwar's location. According to Reuters, Israel is demanding the exile of Sinwar, Deif, and four other Hamas leaders from Gaza as a condition for a ceasefire".

Palestinian attacks continued, with suicide bombings on 9 March (see Café Moment bombing), 20 March, and 21 March. Shooting and grenade attacks also continued to occur in Israel and Israeli settlements. On 27 March, a suicide attack occurred in Netanya, where 30 people were killed in the Park Hotel while celebrating Passover. The event became known as the Passover massacre. The following day, a Palestinian gunman infiltrated the Israeli settlement of Elon Moreh and killed four members of the same family.

On March 29, the Israeli government announced Operation Defensive Shield, An Israeli military operation conducted during the Second Intifada, from 29 March to 10 May 2002. The immediate trigger for the operation was a suicide bombing in Netanya that resulted in 30 Israeli casualties; terming it a large-scale counter-terrorist offensive. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) issued emergency call-up notices for 30,000 reserve soldiers, the largest call-up since the 1982 Lebanon War. The same day, two Israelis were stabbed in the Gaza settlement of Netzarim. Two suicide bombings occurred the next day, and another one took place the day after that.

Overall, in March 2002, some 130 Israelis including approximately 100 noncombatants were killed in Palestinian attacks, while a total of 238 Palestinians including at least 83 noncombatants were killed in the same month by the IDF.

230 Jews/238 Palestinians killed;  of which were 100 noncombatant Israelis/83 noncombatants Palestinians.

Sinwar, The Most Evil Hamas Leader of A Long Line of Hamas Leadership

Nadene Goldfoot

Yahya Sinwar  or Yahya Ibrahim Hassan Sinwar (29 October 1962-16 October 2024) was 62 at death.  He was the chairman of the Hamas Political Bureau from August 2024 and the Hamas leader in the Gaza Strip from February 2017 until his death, succeeding Ismail Haniyeh in both roles.  Sinwar was born in the Khan Yunis refugee camp in Egyptian-ruled Gaza in 1962 to a family who had been expelled or fled from Majdal 'Asqalan (modern Ashkelon) during the 1948 Palestine War.

In February 2017, Sinwar was secretly elected the leader of Hamas in the Gaza Strip, taking over from Ismail Haniyeh. In March, he established a Hamas-controlled administrative committee for the Gaza Strip, opposing power sharing with the Palestinian Authority in Ramallah.

1. Sinwar rejected any reconciliation with Israel, and was said to have been dedicated to its eradication seeing military confrontation as the only path to "liberating Palestine", and saying that this would be achieved "by force, not negotiations".

2. He called on militants to capture more Israeli soldiers. In September 2017, a new round of negotiations with the Palestinian Authority began in Egypt, and Sinwar agreed to dissolve the Hamas administrative committee for Gaza. He was said to

3. have silenced hard-line voices in Gaza,

Mohammed Deif, thought to be assassinated, still alive (b: 1965) age 59) also from Khan Yunis refugee camp, Egyptian-occupied Gaza Strip.

4. ordering against the use of tunnels that Mohammed Deif wanted to use to sneak fighters into Israel before they were shut down by new classified Israeli technology in 2017.  Deif got his way.  He  became the head of the al-Qassam Brigades in 2002, and has since developed the group's capabilities, transforming it from a cluster of amateur cells to organized military units. He had masterminded the group's strategy of combining rocket attacks on Israel with tunnel warfare, and was central to planning the 2023 Hamas-led attack on Israel that initiated the Israel–Hamas war.

Fatah and Hamas Joined Together For The Moment:  Center is Ismail Haniyeh.   On 14 June 2007, amid the Battle of Gaza, President Mahmoud Abbas announced the dissolution of the March 2007 unity government and the declaration of a state of emergency. Haniyeh was dismissed and Abbas ruled Gaza and the West Bank by presidential decree.  On 8 February 2007, the Saudi-brokered Fatah–Hamas Mecca Agreement produced an agreement on a Palestinian national unity government signed by Fatah and Hamas leaders. The agreement included measures to end the internecine violence. The unity government was formed on 17 March, 2007, a month later.

The Hamas takeover of the Gaza Strip in June 2007. It only took them 4 months until they could not stand each other.  The reconciliation process and unification of Hamas and Fatah administrations remains unfinalized and the situation is deemed a frozen conflict.  Hamas has remained the political party, responsible for all fighting out of Gaza.

The chairman of the Hamas Political Bureau  from 1987 until 2004, is the overall and de facto leader of Hamas,  that is governing most of the Gaza Strip since 2007. Ahmed Yassin, the founder of Hamas, became the first chairman of the Hamas Shura Council and de facto leader of Hamas from December 1987 until March 2004. Following his assassination, his deputy, Abdel Aziz al-Rantisi took over for only 15 days before he was assassinated by Israel.

Khaled Mashal (28 May 1956) is 68 years old.Defying pressure from the Quartet, Mashal announced on 29 January 2006 that Hamas had no plans to disarm but added that Hamas was willing to join arms with other Palestinian factions and form an army "like any independent state".  Israel's Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz,  threatened to have Mashal assassinated.  It was unsuccessful.

The position is currently vacant, following the killing of Yahya Sinwar by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) on 16 October 2024 in Rafah, Gaza Strip, Palestine. However, Khaled Mashal was appointed as acting de facto leader of Hamas and will perform duties until the new leader was elected. He  is a Palestinian politician who served as chairman of the Hamas Political Bureau from 1996 until May 2017, where he was succeeded by Ismail Haniyeh. He has also covered duties as the de facto leader of Hamas twice, from July 2024 until August 2024 and from October 2024, after both leaders were assassinated/killed by Israel. He was regarded as one of the most prominent leaders of Hamas since the death of Ahmed Yassin, alongside Ismail Haniyeh and Yahya Sinwar.  Israel's occupation of the West Bank (Judea and Samaria)  and the Gaza Strip during the 1967 Six-Day War forced Mashal's family to flee and he has since then lived in other parts of the Arab world in exile. For that reason, he was considered part of Hamas' "external leadership".

        Ismail Haniyeh ( b: 1962/1963-  31 July 2024) was about 62 years old
He also served as prime minister of the Palestinian National Authority from March 2006 until June 2014 and Hamas leader in the Gaza Strip from June 2007 until February 2017, where he was succeeded by Yahya Sinwar.

Sinwar was appointed in August 2024 after his predecessor, Ismail Haniyeh, was assassinated on 31 July 2024 in Tehran, Iran, after attending the inauguration ceremony of President of Iran, Masoud Pezeshkian.

Yahya Ibrahim Hassan Sinwar (29 October 1962 – 16 October 2024) was a Palestinian militant and politician who served as the de facto leader of Hamas.  He was the chairman of the Hamas Political Bureau from August 2024 and the Hamas leader in the Gaza Strip from February 2017 until his death, succeeding Ismail Haniyeh in both roles.
