What Happened to Kurdistan's Jews and Muslims?

Nadene Goldfoot
Dedicated to Herb Hochfeld
Kurdistan was a mountainous region going through Turkey, Iran and Iraq.

Various groups, among them the Guti, Hurrians, Mannai (Mannaeans), and Armenians, lived in this region in antiquity. The original Mannaean homeland was situated east and south of the Lake Urmia, roughly centered around modern-day Mahabad. The region came under Persian rule during the reign of Cyrus the Great and Darius I.Only the Armenians have continued to exist, almost exterminated recently by WWI in the 1915 genocide of Armenia.  Armenia is a nation, and former Soviet republic, in the mountainous Caucasus region between Asia and Europe. My mother remembers having an Armenian doctor.  We have Armenian Christians living in Jerusalem since the 5th century CE.  There is also an Armenian quarter in the Old City of Jerusalem.

According to tradition, the first Jewish settlers went to Kurdistan as early as in the time of Ezra in the 5th century BCE after the Babylonians had destroyed the Temple and captured the Jews of Judah.

The Babylonians had taken them away in 597 BCE and return in  538 BCE because Cyrus the Great AKA Cyrus II, King of Persia, said so, and then they were allowed to rebuild the Temple and live there.  Ezra was the leader of the returnees.  The Jewish exiles considered Cyrus as a Divine agent.  They had been living in exile for about 60 years.

King Darius reigned from 522 to 486 BCE.  He had inherited the throne of Cyrus.  At the beginning of his reign he permitted Zerubbabel and the Jews who had returned to Jerusalem to resume the reconstruction of the Temple.  It is thought that Darius was the son of Queen Esther.  Zerubbabel was born in 480 BCE and was the grandson of King Jehoiachin (598-597 BCE reign)  of Judah. There was only one more king after him and that was Zedekiah from 597 to 586 BCE.  Zerubbabel was one of the first returnees to Judah from Babylon with the assent of King Cyrus.

The early beginnings of Jewish immigration to Kurdistan are attested by the Aramaic dialect spoken by Kurdish Jews up to modern times;  it is close to the language of the Babylonian Talmud and the speech of the Nestorian Christians in Kurdistan.

Toward the end of the 19th century, such as 1899, the Jewish community was estimated to be 12,000 to 18,000 people.  They were scattered in many villages and towns and living mainly as merchants, peddlers  and craftsmen.

During the 20th century, the population increased, amounting in Persian Kurdistan to number 12,000 to 14,000.

After 1948 when Israel was created May 14, 1948, the great majority of Kurdish Jews from all areas emigrated to Israel and living in or near Jerusalem, the most favored city of all.

Kurdish Jews supporting an independent nation of Kurdistan

Some Kurdish nationalist organizations seek to create an independent nation state once again consisting of some or all of these areas with a Kurdish majority, while others campaign for greater autonomy within the existing national boundaries. The natives of Kurdistan excluding the Jews are now Muslims. They happen to be the closest relatives of Jews, with DNA that is most similar.

The Times of Israel reported on September 30, 2013: "Today, there are almost 200,000 Kurdish Jews in Israel, about half of whom live in Jerusalem. There are also over 30 agricultural villages throughout the country that were founded by Kurdish Jews. Today, the large majority of the Jews of "Kurdistan" and their descendants live in Israel.

"The people closest to the Jews from a genetic point of view may be the Kurds, according to results of a new study at the Hebrew University."Professor Ariella Oppenheim and Dr. Marina Feirman, who carried out the research at the Hebrew University, said they were surprised to find a closer genetic connection between the Jews and the populations of the fertile crescent than between the Jews and their Arab neighbors. Oppenheim pointed out that previous research of DNA of Jews, including her own work, had revealed great genetic similarity between Jews and Arabs, particularly Palestinians from Israel and the territories.
The study's findings are published in the current issue of The American Journal of Human Genetics.
The researchers used the DNA of 1,847 Jewish men of Ashkenazi, Sephardi and Kurdish descent; Muslims and Christians of Kurdish, Turkish and Armenian descent; various Arab populations; and Russians, Poles and residents of Belarus.

Iraqi Kurdistan first gained autonomous status in a 1970 agreement with the Iraqi government, and its status was re-confirmed as an autonomous entity within the federal Iraqi republic in 2005. There is a province by the name of Kurdistan in Iran, but it is not self-ruled. Kurds fighting in the Syrian Civil War were able to take control of large sections of northern Syria as government forces, loyal to President Bashar al-Assad, withdrew to fight elsewhere. Having established their own government, they called for autonomy in a federal Syria after the war

A 2010 US report, written before the instability in Syria and Iraq that exists as of 2014, attested that "Kurdistan may exist by 2030.  The weakening of the Iraqi state following the 2014 Northern Iraq offensive by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant has also presented an opportunity for independence for Iraqi Kurdistan, augmented by Turkey's move towards acceptance of such a state although it opposes moves toward Kurdish autonomy in Turkey and Syria.

The Syrian Kurdish fighters are known for the involvement of women in battles such as Manbij.

Turkey had been shelling both ISiS and the Kurds who were fighting ISIS.  It happens that Turkey doesn't want to lose any of the land the Kurds are living on, which Turkey feels is part of their country.  "The YPG are widely regarded as one of the most effective forces in the fight against IS and attacks on them have prompted calls from the UN, US and EU for Turkey to show restraint."

FIGHTING AL-NUSRA:  also described as al-Qaeda in Syria or al-Qaeda in the Levant, was a Salafist jihadist organization fighting against Syrian government forces in the Syrian Civil War. Its aim was to establish an Islamic state in the country or ISIS.
The Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant, who took more than 80 Turkish persons captive in Mosul during their offensive, is an enemy of Turkey, making Kurdistan useful for Turkey as a buffer state. On 2014-06-28 Hüseyin Çelik, a spokesman for the ruling AK party, made comments to the Financial Times indicating Turkey's readiness to accept an independent Kurdistan in northern Iraq. Various sources have reported that Al-Nusra has issued a fatwā calling for Kurdish women and children in Syria to be killed, and the fighting in Syria has led tens of thousands of refugees to flee to Iraq's Kurdistan region. As of 2015, Turkey is actively supporting the Al-Nusra, but as of January 2017, Turkey's foreign ministry has said that Al-Nusra is a terrorist group and has acted accordingly.
President Trump erred when he paved the way for President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey to invade Syria.  By doing so he abandoned America's Kurdish partners in the Syrian Democratic Forces, who had eliminated the Islamic State's caliphate in March, after 5 years of hard warfare.  The SDF lost 11 thousand soldiers;  The US lost 6 thousand.
The Kurds are the world's largest ethnic group without their own state, and the Turkish president sees them only as terrorists.  He has a Turkish separatist campaign going on in Turkey.

"One of Israel’s best-known politicians reiterated his call on Friday for the Knesset to pass a law recognizing the genocide of the Armenian people more than a century ago.
Yair Lapid — a former cabinet minister who now leads the opposition Yesh Atid party — said on Twitter that recognizing the slaughter of up to 1.5 million Armenians by Turkey was “our moral responsibility as the Jewish state.”  Maybe they should recognize in some way the Kurd's loss in fighting ISIS as well.

Never to Forget 2020: The Year the World Stayed Home

Nadene Goldfoot
The Corona Virus has landed on our doorsteps.
It first infects the cells lining your throat, airways and lungs and turns them into "coronavirus factories" that spew out huge numbers of new viruses that go on to infect yet more cells.
It's happening to all of us on planet Earth.  We're forced to stay indoors in our homes because of the pandemic of the Corona Virus.  For us, it started in December.

We've known about such a virus since 1965 which was like a cold, but how did SARS-CoV-2, the new coronavirus that causes COVID-19, come into being? MERS and SARS are other bad ones.  Here’s what we know about the virus that was first detected in Wuhan, China, in late 2019 and has set off a global pandemic.
New Yorkers are in their homes; only the essential go to work and keep
at a distance; from 6 feet to 10 feet

Even Israel, where so many scientific medical discoveries come from was taken by surprise and was hit hard as so many in this tiny 8,000 to 10,000 square mile state live in high-rise apartment buildings.  Especially hit hard was Mea Sharim, a very orthodox neighborhood in Jerusalem.

"As of April 3rd,  7,030 Israelis have so far tested positive for the coronavirus; Thirty-eight people have died, 115 are in serious condition and 95 are on life support. One Israeli tourist died in Italy. So far, 357 have recovered.

Police have set up cordons around roads leading in and out of Bnei Brak

The number of coronavirus cases in the ultra-Orthodox town of Bnei Brak, de facto a neighborhood of Tel Aviv, has jumped to over 1,000 on Friday. The rate of the increase has slowed down, however: as compared to the previous days’ 25 percent hikes, the number of cases grew by a mere 14 percent on Friday.  "An ultra-Orthodox Jewish town with one of the highest rates of coronavirus cases in Israel has been placed under effective lockdown.

The overall number of patients grew to 1,030 from 900 the previous day. Meanwhile, the number of cases has also grown significantly in Kokhav HaShahar (to a total of 11), Tiberias (84), Safed, Kochav Yaakov (31) and Modiin elite (97). (Aaron Rabinowitz)."  Is has been reported to be slowing down overall.

"Mea Shearim (Hebrew: מאה שערים, lit. "hundred gates"; contextually "a hundred fold") is one of the oldest Jewish neighborhoods in Jerusalem. It is populated by Haredi Jews, and was built by members of the Old Yishuv. The oldest Sephardic Haredi dynasty, Levi Kahana of Spain, has a religious cultural center in the neighborhood."

Ambulance in Mea Shearim to pick up someone
who has the Corona Virus
This is one of several ultra orthodox communities in Israel.
People who have depended on their religion to keep them healthy
and safe, now have to depend on the scientists as well,
and follow a world-wide adaption of isolation; meaning
to stay home and not to contaminate anyone.
The problem is that healthy people may be carriers and can
give the virus to others with more delicate immune systems.
The world's economics are being destroyed; hopefully-
only temporarily.
Chasing down the carrier of the Corona Virus
This carrier left home against orders.

"Modesty" posters in Hebrew and English are hung at every entrance to Mea Shearim. When visiting the neighborhood, women and girls are urged to wear what is deemed to be modest dress (knee-length skirts or longer, no plunging necklines or midriff tops, no sleeveless blouses or bare shoulders), men and boys are urged to avoid wearing shorts and sleeveless shirts, tourists are requested not to arrive in large, conspicuous groups and in some of the older signs even non-jews are requested to wear Kippahs. During Shabbat (from Friday night at sundown to Saturday night at sundown), visitors are asked to refrain from smoking, photography, driving or using mobile phones. When entering synagogues, men are asked to cover their heads.

Update for Israel who has 173 deaths from the Corona Virus with 13,654 who have the virus and 3,872 who have recovered.

Strict laws of keeping someone who has the virus and must be isolated have to be obeyed everywhere.  It's very hard on this neighborhood.  It's hard on all of us everywhere but oh so necessary.  What I find hard is to talk to anyone and keep even 3 feet part.  We don't do this normally.  My walking cane is about 3 feet long.  Imagine a 6 foot distance that is now deemed too close, so we need 10 feet apart.  Thus:  isolation.

Some people are demonstrating to toss out the rule now, when we haven't even all reached the peak nor have had all people tested.  The total population out of bed might just all be carriers to each other!!  Because we've been living with THE FLU which we get inoculated against each year, and have been living with that, they think we should take our chances; after all, it's just the flu.

Ramallah, empty streets
The state of Palestine, and I don't know who this is, whether it's Judea and Samaria (West Bank) or Gaza, report today that they have 449 with the virus, 3 deaths and 71 have recovered.

Corona Virus victims in hospital with ventilators

This is not just any old flu.  This is the worst and destroys the internal body after one has had it as best it can.  It is the most highly infectious.  It is indeed one of the worst calamities that could befall this world population.  To top it off, all three religions, Judaism, Christianity and Islam feel we are living at a time of the end of times when things are really about to happen-like a big-time-war.  Add nuclear capabilities to the mix and it's so probable.  Well, now we have this to add to our fears.  Science can defend us and science can destroy us.  We are living in a totally scientific world of cell phones, computers, and getting everything we want immediately.  We don't like to wait for anything;  thus the NOW generation demonstrating to get back to work or the politics of needing people to work for the economy.

Who Were the Six Million Jews of Holocaust?

Nadene Goldfoot
What Auschwitz Concentration Camp Was Like
Those who lived to be freed

Ari Shavit reminds us in his book, "My Promised Land," of who the 6 million Jews were.  We hear that number often, six million, and it doesn't mean anything.  People might think of $6,000,000 (6 million)  as nothing today when we hear that there are billionaires in this world.  Ari presents some numbers that make it more realistic.

Holland had 140,000 Jews.
102,000 Jews killed.  Remember the story of Anne Frank?

Romania had 817,000 Jews.
                   380,000 Jews were killed.

Hungary had 825,000 Jews.
                   565,000 Jews were killed

The Soviet Union had 3,020,000 Jews.
                                  995,000 Jews were killed.

Poland had 3,325,000 Jews.
                 3,000,000 Jews were killed.

Description

The Auschwitz concentration camp was a complex of over 40 concentration and extermination camps operated by Nazi Germany in occupied Poland during World War II and the Holocaust.

He just named a few countries.

Germany was one of the first to lose the Jewish population to the Nazis.  Jews were feeling the grip of hatred early on in the 30s, and my Uncle Werner Oster,
born in 1916 in Westerburg, Hildesheim, Niedersachsen, Germany,  was put in Auschwitz then for beating a cow on the way to his father's slaughter house with a stick.  He was walking it along a path.  His father made sausages. He wasn't hurting the cow, but the Nazis certainly hurt him in Auschwitz, and that was early on before they starting killing Jews there.  What a pretense for taking him away from his family.  It was because he was Jewish!

The family pooled all their money for a ticket to get him out of Germany first and he managed to be on the ship, SS Washington,  in May 1939, 4 months before Germany entered Poland.  He might have been the last Jew out of Germany then because the door closed and he was unable to get his parents and 16 year old sister out, so they perished in the Holocaust.

New Arrivals: Children taken to Auschwitz
Germany had 523,000 Jews in January 1933.
                      37,000 emigrated by June 1933.
505,000 Jews remained in June 1933.
Germany's population in 1933 was 67,000,000.
Jews made up 0.75% of the population, not even 1%.
The largest Jewish population center was Berlin.
214,000 Jews in 1937 left to be exterminated.
In all, the Germans and their collaborators killed between 160,000 and 180,000 German Jews in the Holocaust, including most of those Jews deported out of Germany.

Austria had 191,458 Jews in 1934.
120,000 Jews emigrated by November 1939
                  Deportation began in October 1939.
Vienna had 90% of the Jews with 176,000
The population of Vienna was:      191,481.  2/3 of these Jews escaped to
other countrie only to die there later.
65,000 Plus Jews from Austria died in the Holocaust.

Lithuania was hit hard in the Holocaust.  Our grandmother (Bubba). Zlata Goldfus nee Jermulowske, was from Lazdey (Lazdijai) and both grandparents were in Oregon by 1906.
On November 3, 1941, 1,535 Jews from the Lazdey district, men, women and children were murdered by the Nazis and their local helpers.
Our grandfather, Nathan Abraham Goldfus, was from Telsiai (Telz)

Lithuanian Helpers Encircling Jews
Who Were Forced Out of Their Homes

WW II started with the German invasion of Poland on 1st of September, 1939.
Earlier, on March 20, 1939, Hitler had given the ultimatum to Lithuania to leave Memel(now renamed Klaipeda-a port city)  in 24 hours.  7,000 Jews lived there and around this city had to escape, leaving their belongings behind and many took asylum in Telz, where the Jewish community took care of them. By June 22, 1941, the Nazis invaded Lithuania and the Jews tried to escape to Russia.  On the 23rd, the Nazis bombed the town.  Before the army arrived, there were  armed Lithuanians with white stripes on their sleeves who took over the town.   On Friday, June 27th, the Jews were expelled from their homes and were told to leave their homes unlocked.  They were circled by armed Lithuanians under German command.  The Jews were told to go to the shore of the lake there.  Eventually they were all slaughtered.

In 1941 about 7,000 Lithuanian Jews; children, women, men were cruelly murdered by the Nazis and their local collaborators.

About Me

Nadene Goldfoot
Moving to Israel in 1980 was a big decision, and one I'm so glad I made. As a 22 year teacher of Elementary education, I became a junior high teacher of Engish as a 2nd language in Safed after a 10 month educational experience in Haifa of which I completed and became a certified Israeli teacher, even passing the Hebrew test by the skin of my teeth actually after breaking my elbow and arm bone just as the 1982 war was about to start. I've written 2 true books and now have been working in 6 blogs; 3 about Israel and 3 about family genealogy. It's all enough to keep me very busy. I've met the best of people this way that I dearly love, while in my home my time is spent with my female Llasa apso, my age in dog years and as spoiled as can be. I swear she understands too much.
