Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed on February 28, 2026, in joint precision strikes by the US and Israeli militaries. The airstrikes killed Khamenei as well as other members of his family. Yet the grand funeral isn't  until July 7th in a few days.  That's waiting 129 days or 4 1/2 months for burial.  I can't believe this.  It true!   Because of internal political tensions and security concerns in Iran, his public state funeral rites and coffin displays were significantly delayed and began in July 2026.

TEHRAN, Iran — Iran prepared Friday for the dayslong funeral of the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, with banners across Tehran urging the public to rise up in support of the Islamic Republic after the devastating war that killed the 86-year-old cleric.

The multi-day state funeral for late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei will feature a funeral procession in the holy city of Qom on Tuesday, July 7, 2026.

The country's theocracy expects to see millions flood the streets of the capital beginning Saturday in scenes reminiscent of the burial of the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini in 1989.

In Shia Islam, death ceremonies (Ahkaam Al-Mayyit) follow a specific, highly structured process . The core duties include : preparing and washing the body , placing it in a shroud , performing the funeral prayer (Salatul Mayyit) , and burying the body . These rites are considered a collective, obligatory duty (Wajib al-Kifa'i)

1. Just Before and Immediately After Death
  • Orientation: During their final moments, the dying person should ideally be positioned on their back with the soles of their feet facing the Qiblah.
  • Immediate Care: As soon as the person passes away, it is recommended to close their eyes and mouth, straighten their limbs, and gently cover the body with a clean sheet.
  • Urgency: The burial should be expedited and not unduly delayed, unless there is uncertainty regarding whether the person has actually died.
  • There are continued steps.  I was quite impressed with this last one,
  • 7. Prayers of Solace (Salatul Wahsha)
      • Often referred to as the "prayer of fear/loneliness," this is an optional but highly recommended prayer that family and friends perform on the first night after the burial . It is meant to bring comfort to the deceased during their first night in the grave .
