Fighting In Lebanon, A Sore-spot For Israel

 Nadene Goldfoot

Israel gets its licks in, but our IDF soldiers continue to die.

The IDF announced that 6 soldiers serving in the Golani brigade were killed in a battle in southern Lebanon yesterday:

1. Captain Itay Marcovich, 22, from Kokhav Ya'ir; a dedicated leader

2. Staff Sergeant Sraya Elbom, 21, from Mehola; joyful and generous

3. Staff Sergeant Dror Hen, 20, from Gan Haim; a loyal protector

4. Staff Sergeant Nir Gofer, 20, from Dimona; hardworking and kind

5. Sergeant Shalev Itzhak Sagron, 21, from Sderot;  true-heartedd fighter  and

6. Sergeant Yoav Daniel, 19, from Nahariya. a spirited champion

They put everything on the line to protect their home.

Recognized by their brown beret and their rectangular unit tags, the soldiers of the Golani Brigade have earned a reputation as elite fighters, both among their Israeli counterparts and their enemies. They have marked a number of successes on the battlefield, including combat in the War of Independence, the Yom Kippur War, Operation Entebbe, and the Second Lebanon War.

Progress is reportedly being made towards reaching a ceasefire agreement in Lebanon, but the Lebanese government, in conjunction with Hezbollah, appears to be trying to play hardball.  Hezbollah wants it all their way. Demands include complete Israeli withdrawal, ban on IDF activity in Lebanese territory on the ground, in the air and at sea, no changes to UN Resolution 1701.

United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701 was unanimously adopted on August 11, 2006 to end the 34-day Lebanon War. The resolution called for:
  • Ceasefire: An immediate ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah
  • Withdrawal: The withdrawal of Israeli troops from southern Lebanon
  • Disarmament: The disarmament of Hezbollah and other armed groups in Lebanon
  • UNIFIL: The deployment of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) to monitor the ceasefire and support the Lebanese Armed Forces
  • Arms embargo: An embargo on the sale of arms and related material to Lebanon, except as authorized by its government
  • Sovereignty: The reaffirmation of Lebanon's sovereignty, political independence, and territorial integrity
The resolution was adopted during the 2006 Lebanon War, which killed an estimated 1,200 people in Lebanon and 160 in Israel.  The war started on 12 July 2006, and continued until a United Nations-brokered ceasefire went into effect in the morning on 14 August 2006, though it formally ended on 8 September 2006 when Israel lifted its naval blockade of Lebanon. It marked the third Israeli invasion into Lebanon since 1978.
Some say that the resolution was honored more in the breach than in the observance. Hezbollah has disregarded international calls to disarm and has continued to serve the interests of Iran. Face it;  Lebanon has been taken over by Hezbollah- Iran.
