Me with Jerry, my neighborHere I am, a Jewish former retired elementary school teacher and adult teacher of ESL at the crux of turning 91 years, and am looking back and finding my list of disappointments within my own culture. I'm thankful I did not wind up like them, having had a very similar yet different experience in life between my parents and religion. Perhaps this can be a warning to today's new parents. This article comes about after writing my previous article for my blog about the "Gang of Eight."
George Soros: born as György Schwartz; August 12, 1930) and will be 95 soon, is an American investor and philanthropist. As of May 2025, he has a net worth of US$7.2 billion, having donated more than $32 billion to the Open Society Founda of which $15 billion has already been distributed, representing 64% of his original fortune. In 2020, Forbes called Soros the "most generous giver" in terms of percentage of net worth. 4 years older than myself, born in Budapest to a non-observant Jewish family, Soros survived the Nazi occupation of Hungary and moved to the United Kingdom in 1947. He's never helped Israel.
His background was not condusive to learning much about the religion he was born into. Soros has wryly described his home as antisemitic. When asked what he thought about Israel, in The New Yorker, Soros replied: "I don't deny Jews the right to a national existence – but I don't want to be a part of it". According to hacked emails released in 2016, Soros's Open Society Foundation has a self-described objective of "challenging Israel's racist and anti-democratic policies" in international forums, in part by questioning Israel's reputation as a democracy. He has funded NGOs which have been actively critical of Israeli policies including groups that campaign for the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement against Israel.
Speaking before a 2003 conference of the Jewish Funders Network, Soros said that the administrations of George W. Bush in the U.S. and Ariel Sharon in Israel, and even the unintended consequences of some of his own actions, were partially contributing to a new European antisemitism. Soros, citing accusations that he was one of the "Jewish financiers" who, in antisemitic terms, "ruled the world by proxy", suggested that, if the direction of those policies were changed, then anti-Semitism would diminish. Abraham Foxman, national director of the Anti-Defamation League later said that Soros's comments held a simplistic view, were counterproductive, biased and a bigoted perception of the situation, and "blamed the victim" when holding Jews responsible for antisemitism. Jewish philanthropist Michael Steinhardt, who arranged for Soros's appearance at the conference, clarified that "George Soros does not think Jews should be hated any more than they deserve to be". Soros has also said that Jews can overcome antisemitism by "giv[ing] up on the tribalness".
Bernie Sanders: Bernard Sanders (born September 8, 1941, another Brooklynite), almost 84, is an American politician and activist who is the senior United States senator from the state of Vermont. He is the longest-serving independent in US congressional history, but maintains a close relationship with the Democratic Party, having caucused with House and Senate Democrats for most of his congressional career and sought the party's presidential nomination in 2016 and 2020. Sanders has been viewed as the leader of the modern American progressive movement-with a lot of socialism added to his thoughts.
Born into a working-class Jewish family and raised in New York, Sanders attended Brooklyn College before graduating from the University of Chicago in 1964.
As Sanders described his upbringing as an American Jew in a 2016 speech: his father generally attended synagogue only on Yom Kippur; he attended public schools while his mother "chafed" at his yeshiva Sunday schooling at a Hebrew school; and their religious observances were mostly limited to Passover seders with their neighbors. Larry Sanders said of their parents, "They were very pleased to be Jews, but didn't have a strong belief in God."
Bernie had a bar mitzvah at the historic Kingsway Jewish Center in Midwood, Brooklyn, where he grew up. When asked about his Jewish heritage, Sanders has said that he is "proud to be Jewish."
In 1963, in cooperation with the Labor Zionist youth movement Hashomer Hatzair, Sanders and his first wife volunteered at Sha'ar HaAmakim, a kibbutz in northern Israel. His motivation for the trip was as much socialistic as it was Zionistic. In 1963, Sanders and Deborah Shiling Messing, whom he met in college, volunteered for several months on the Israeli kibbutz Sha'ar HaAmakim. They married in 1964 and bought a summer home in Vermont; they had no children and divorced in 1966.

Yet, Bernie does not ever back Israel, the only Jewish state. The US Senate on Thursday overwhelmingly rejected a pair of resolutions by progressive Senator Bernie Sanders aimed at blocking the transfer of weapons to Israel, with the minority of Democrats voting in favor falling since the last time such an initiative was advanced several months ago.

(Kevin Dietsch/Getty Images/AFP)By 4th of April 2025, Sanders’s motions were virtually guaranteed to fail given the Republican majority in the Senate and the still small minority of Democrats willing to vote against Israel. However, such votes are often framed as a litmus test on how much the Democratic Party is shifting in its support for Israel, and in particular, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government.
Chuck Schumer: Charles Ellis Schumer born November 23, 1950) is an American politician serving as the senior United States senator from New York, a seat he has held since 1999.The Minority leader is Chuck Schumer, who is highly against President Trump, a Demo turned Republican, and is against the move of attacking Iran's uranium site involved with making enough for many Atomic bombs, and operation carried out and was highly successful. He wants to impeach Trump for this Operation Midnight Hammer, vowed to hold impeachment trial despite apparent lack of GOP votes
Adam Schiff: Adam Bennett Schiff (born June 22, 1960) , a Stanford and Harvard man, is an American lawyer, author, and politician serving as the junior United States senator from California, a seat he has held since 2024. He is the great-grandson of Lithuanian Jews who left Eastern Europe. Schiff moved with his parents to Scottsdale, Arizona, in 1970 and Alamo, California, in 1972. "Growing up in a Jewish household with strong ties to the Jewish community, I learned to revere a passage from Micah — that instructs us to do justice, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God. My parents also instilled in me a strong desire to do Tikkun Olam, and find a way to help mend a fractured world. I took these lessons to heart, pursuing a career in law and justice, choosing to run for office, and defending our democracy during a troubled time in the history of our country. My work safeguarding democracy, dismantling systems built on racism and bias, and finding solutions to the climate crisis all stem from these values. And these values compel me to condemn all forms of antisemitism, hatred, and bigotry, wherever I see them. I am very proud of my Jewish heritage, our traditions and values, and the work our community does to build a more just and equitable world for the next generation."
Reading this lastly is a surprise to me, so I'll have to change my opinion, but I am very disappointed that he can't back the saving of Israel in such a time. Surely you know she has and still is in great danger of being wiped out by a hidden atomic bomb belonging to Iran. If you knew a dam was about to break and drown New York City, and your hateful Republican could give an okay to press a magic button and stop it, wouldn't you allow the button to be pressed? Remember, save a life first and foremost. To save a life is to save a world. That's what l'chaim is all about. Israel's life needed priority.
A member of the Democratic Party, Schiff served 12 terms in the United States House of Representatives from 2001 to 2024 and was a member of the California State Senate from 1996 to 2000. Schiff was the lead impeachment manager in the first impeachment trial of President Donald Trump. It is Chuck Schumer who wants to impeach Trump now for action of his Operation Midnight Hammer which did not go through the Senate.
Schiff was a supporter of Israel. However, In December 2016, he urged Obama to veto UN Security Council Resolution 2334, which condemned Israeli settlement building in the (occupied Palestinian territories) [what I call Judea and Samaria] as a violation of international law. Professor Kontorovitch, international lawyer, gave this an okay to built in our ancient land, especially as it has been through the Oslo meetings and may live in area C without any condemnation. This is quite a betrayal. Who got to him, the Squad? "The Squad" refers to a group of four progressive Democratic congresswomen: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Ayanna Pressley, and Rashida Tlaib. They were all first-time candidates elected in the 2018 midterm elections. All four are women of color and members of the Congressional Progressive Caucus.

In February 2019, Representative Ilhan Omar tweeted, something about Jews that even him said not to repeat, so I won't in reference to American politicians' support for Israel and invoked the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC). The tweet received widespread bipartisan condemnation, including from Schiff, for implying that lobby money was fueling American politicians' support of Israel. Schiff said it was "never acceptable to give voice to, or repeat, anti-Semitic smears".
In October 2023, Schiff condemned Hamas's actions during the Gaza war and expressed his support for Israel and its right to self-defense He rejected calls for a ceasefire but said he supported "humanitarian pauses" to deliver aid to Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.
But that came amid claims that Republican counterparts were given advance notice of the operation, which involved 125 aircraft – including seven B-2 bombers carrying 14 bunker busters weighing three tons – and 75 Tomahawk missiles launched from US submarines. Axios reported that the Senate minority leader, Chuck Schumer, had been informed shortly before the attacks began at 6.40 pm eastern time. He did not spill the beans.
I hear people ask, how can a prominent Jew not back Israel at such an important time, and I blame their education. They were ones who were distracted into a lot of different issues and were easily impressed by other people's bent, not knowing their own people's story. They had too many fish to fry to give attention to the one his great grandparents had caught, that were so interesting.
