Lee Smith, Journalist, Uncovers Plot Concerning Trump

 Nadene Goldfoot

Lee Harold Smith was speaking at The Mittleman Jewish Community Center  in Portland several years ago, speaking about his book, THE STRONG HORSE,  which I bought.  It was about taking another look, a different mindset, about the Muslims.  I had no idea who Lee Smith was at the time.  By the way, it's an excellent book and did give me a different perspective.  It turns out that he is "an American journalist and author and is a Senior Fellow at Hudson Institute and was a senior editor at the Weekly Standard.  Smith was formerly editor-in-chief of The Village Voice Literary Supplement, a national monthly literary review. He has written for publications including The New York TimesThe Hudson ReviewEcco PressAtheneumGrand StreetGQ, and Talk.  He was born  on  April 10, 1962 in New York City.   He was asked why he wrote it and answered, " I was raised in New York City and wanted to understand and explain why almost 3,000 of my neighbors were killed on 9/11."

"At the time of the 9/11 attacks, Smith was working as an editor at The Village Voice and a contributor to Artforum. By his own account in his book, The Strong Horse, Smith was dissatisfied with the Orientalist explanations of the Muslim world as presented by Edward Said, whom he had met and spoken with about the region. As a result, he took a job as a foreign correspondent for The Weekly Standard and spent years reporting from the region."

Devin Gerald Nunes is an American politician and former dairy farmer serving as the U.S. Representative for California's 22nd congressional district since 2003. A member of the Republican Party, Nunes was Chair of the House Intelligence Committee from 2015 to 2019. He was born Oct. 1,,1973.

In May he'd made the news and attention is drawn to him by Fox News.  The headline was: Author who Clinton ally sought to silence speaks out:  Russiagate was designed to assist Clinton campaign.  I just noticed this today from Mike Huckabee's message:  "On May 12, 2020 Smith appeared on a segment of Fox News with Steve Doocy where he discussed media bias and Russian collusion. In the very beginning of the interview, his latest book, The Plot Against the President, is showcased briefly to viewers.  The book is  the true story of how Congressman Devin Nunes uncovered the Biggest Political Scandal in U. S. History.

Following alleged attempts by Clinton ally Sidney Blumenthal to stop author Lee Smith's book from being published, Smith spoke about Russiagate on "Sunday Morning Futures" and claimed the entire saga was a political hit, intended to help Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign.

Asked why he wrote this book, he said, "I thought it was important to tell the story of the people who stood up and did the right thing, like Congressman Nunes and his staff. We have a pretty good idea now about what the bad guys did, what Obama intelligence officials and Clinton operatives did. But we didn’t have a good idea of what good people had done to stand up.

In March 2017 the U.S. House intelligence committee, which Nunes chaired at the time, launched an investigation into possible Russian interference in the 2016 United States elections. On April 6, 2017, he temporarily stepped aside from leading that investigation while the Office of Congressional Ethics investigated allegations (which Nunes denied) that he had improperly disclosed classified information to the public.  In December 2017 the Republican-majority U.S. House Committee on Ethics closed its investigation without taking any action against Nunes.

In February 2018, Nunes  publicly released the Nunes memo, a four-page memorandum alleging an FBI conspiracy against Donald Trump. Nunes subsequently began an investigation of the FBI and the Justice Department for allegedly abusing their powers in an attempt to hurt Trump.
