People Taking to Burning Our American Flag

Nadene Goldfoot
In showing their disgust for their president, people are now burning our American flag.  Is there no depth of disgust that such people as Maxine Waters are showing their disfavor?  Sorry, folks; he won fair and square and just so happens to be our 45th president of these United States, regardless if your woman or man lost or not.  Burning the flag?  Evidently you are short on facts of what that means to most of us:

1776

Are you sorry that America was ever created in 1776?  You're burning the very symbol of our land, our country.  If you are unhappy with the choice we made for Trump, pick one better for the next 4 year chance to vote again, but burn our flag?  A lot of us were also very unhappy with Obama, and were also very unhappy when he was voted in again for 4 more disappointing years.  We didn't burn our flag.  We had 17 men ready to try to be selected who thought they could do a better job, and they threw their hat into the ring.  That's the way this country was designed to operate.  I'm proud of their patience and determination with sticking to the laws of our great land.

Betsy Ross  supposedly made our very first flag " which was secretly presented to General George Washington in Philadelphia in 1776."  We don't have hard proof that she designed and made it, but that's our legend and we like it.  The thing is, it's the flag that counts, and when we see it, we know it represents our United States.   In 1870, Ross's grandson, William J. Canby, presented a paper to the Historical Society of Pennsylvania in which he claimed that his grandmother had "made with her hands the first flag" of the United States. Canby said he first obtained this information from his aunt Clarissa Sydney (Claypoole) Wilson in 1857, twenty years after Betsy Ross's death. Canby dates the historic episode based on Washington's journey to Philadelphia, in late spring 1776, a year before Congress passed the Flag Act.

." In 1990, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in United States v. Eichman that the prohibition of burning the U.S. flag conflicts with the First Amendment right to freedom of speech and is therefore unconstitutional.  George Herbert Walker Bush was our 41st president then, a Republican, so Maxine Waters has a Republican to thank for not being in jail for burning our flag."

"When a flag is so tattered that it no longer fits to serve as a symbol of the United States, it should be destroyed in a dignified manner, preferably by burning. The Veterans of Foreign WarsAmerican LegionBoy Scouts of AmericaGirl Scouts of the USA, the military and other organizations regularly conduct dignified flag-burning ceremonies."

By our disgruntled with Trump voters burning our flag, they're saying that It-THE FLAG, cannot be the symbol of our country anymore and needs burning.  This is not an effigy of Trump.  It is the symbol of our land, even for people who didn't get their own way.  The onlookers are armed with pipes and bats, and people stomped on the flag as well.

February 23, 1945, which depicts six United States Marines raising a U.S. flag atop Mount Suribachi, during the Battle of Iwo Jima, in World War II. This was the specific moment of raising this larger flag that was captured in the Pulitzer Prize-winning photo, a pretty important moment that hasn't been easily forgotten.
The Battle of Iwo Jima was fought  with the raising of our flag showing that we were there.  Three of the marines in this picture died a few days later in the fight.  Not only is this a special picture but was used to make a sculpture -the Marine Corps War Memorial, which was dedicated in 1954 to all Marines who died for their country. They fought for our country.  The flag was the symbol.

You're a grand old flag

You're a grand old flag

You're a high-flying flag

And forever in peace may you wave
You're the emblem of
The land I love
The home of the free and the brave
Ev'ry heart beats true
Under red, white and blue
Where there's never a boast or brag
But should old acquaintance be forgot
Keep your eye on the grand old flag
