Middle East Terrorism Israel Faces Daily: Iran's Hezbollah & Syria's Al-Qaeda

Iron Dome

"Hezbollah, based in Lebanon but created by Iran, fired rockets into northern Israeli population centers in the 1990s, posing a security challenge for the Israel Defense Forces. Israel had floated the idea of its own short-range antimissile system, but American defense officials cautioned that it would be "doomed to fail".  Israel'Rafael Advanced Defense Systems and Israel Aerospace Industries created the Iron Dome in 2011.  During the summer of 2014, 4,500 rockets were hurled down on Israel.  They had the Iron Dome to help protect them.  "The system is designed to intercept and destroy short-range rockets and artillery shells fired from distances of 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) to 70 kilometres (43 mi) away and whose trajectory would take them to a populated area."

To the north, Hezbollah has an arsenal of 100,000+ rockets that they have started to use.

In 2014, Jabhat al-Nusra, an al-Qaeda affiliate " which is a branch of al-Qaeda operating in Syria and Lebanon, and other Syrian Islamist terrorist groups strengthened their position along Israel's northern border where I used to live from 1980-1985 in Safed.  Even though Hezbollah was there, there were now these 2 major terrorist groups.  They had taken control of most of the Syrian territory on Israel's border.

"Al-Nusra aims to overthrow the Assad government and replace it with a Sunni Islamic state. Although the group is affiliated with al-Qaeda, al-Nusra does not emphasise Western targets or global jihad, focusing instead on the "near enemy" of the Syrian state."  Wouldn't that be Israel?  Their goal is in competition with ISIS who also are in the very act of creating an Islamic Caliphate.

It looks like each terrorist group is aiming to create their own state, like jackels establishing their own territory.

By August, rebel groups had seized the Quneitra border crossing, "between Syrian controlled territory and the Israeli-occupied portion of the Golan Heights"  and much of the province.  They captured and briefly held dozens of peacekeepers from the UN, who were called the Disengagement Observer Forces or UNEDOF.

"The opening of a crossing at Quneitra took place after the Yom Kippur War in 1973. The UN Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) established its headquarters along the border. In order to carry out its work, UNDOF needed to move freely between Israel and Syria

One month later, the Assad regime had lost 80% of their province and the UNDOF had moved inside Israel's border for protection.  The position is that the UN peacekeeping forces previously in Syria have been evacuated.

The UN forces in Lebanon continue to show they are unable to disarm Hezbollah or even require it to abide by the terms of the UN Security Council Resolution 1701 as they continue to attack Israel.

Hezbollah shooting missiles at Israel
Israel has been forced to step up its own military actions and are getting read for the possibility of future hostilities.

Israel struck a convoy in the Syrian Golan where they had killed 6 Hezbollah operatives and 1 Iranian General, Mohammed Allahdadi.  .  They were in the midst of planning cross-border attacks on Israel after several earlier attacks in the area had been committed.  "Following the attack Tehran vowed to strike back. "These martyrdoms proved the need to stick with jihad. The Zionists must await ruinous thunderbolts," Revolutionary Guards' chief General Mohammad Ali Jafari was quoted on Tuesday as saying by Fars news agency.  He said, "We are one with Hezbollah.  wherever the blood of our martyrs is spilled on the front line, our response will be one."

As commander of the Revolutionary Guards, General Mohammad Ali Jafari is one of the dozen most powerful men in Iran. He is a hard-line ideologue loyal to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Kornet anti-tank missiles fired by Hezbollah, worlds most powerful missiles
The next week,  January 28, 2015, Hezbollah terrorists had ambushed 2 Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) convoys riding in unarmored vehicles on a civilian road.  They were armed with Russian-made Kornet anti-tank missiles and struck this convoy from a distance of 3 miles.  2 Israeli soldiers were killed and 7 were wounded.  This was the first casualty happening on Israel's northern border in over a year.

Israel is a teeny nation, about the size of one of America's smallest 50 states, New Jersey.  It has to spend more money on defense as a % of its gross domestic product than any other country in the industrialized world.
