How the Palestinians Lost Land in 1947 and the 13 Countries Who Voted Against Israel in 1947

Nadene Goldfoot

UN Partition Plan of Palestine into Israel and Arab state.  Arabs refused, Jews accepted.  This is how big Palestine would have been had Arafat accepted.  The Arab greed to want all of Palestine caused them to be where they are today.

3,000 plus rockets have landed in Israel from Hamas terrorists in Gaza over the past month.  Khaled Meshaal uses a shallow form of math to come up with "over 1,000 Gazan civilians have been killed to 67 Israeli soldiers.  This is shallow thinking because if it wasn't for the Iron Dome, Israel's air defense system that they invented and the use of thousands of bomb shelters,  Israel would have lost at least 3,000+ citizens.  Israel protects its citizens  from known terrorists who have been pounding Israel whereas the terrorists use their citizens to protect their rocket launchers and rockets. Numbers only reflect how  each party feels about their people.

Considering the civilian attitude provided for us today via CNN, Gazans have been polled and stand with Hamas militants.  So does their political wing.  They are determined to sacrifice more people to gain their outlandish demands which are now completely off-key; exits from Gaza so that they can more easily enter Israel to destroy her.

Hamas's  military wing have been shooting rockets into Israel since 2001.  They continued every year till 2008 when there was a cease fire for a short period.  Then they picked up again and have been shooting each and every year constantly up to this moment; some days more than others all this time.  Yet the UN never condemned the terrorists, only Israel.  Whatever has happened in this world, the UN focuses only on Israel's 'misgivings."  Evidently "Mom" likes all her other children but not Israel.  No matter what, Israel is in the wrong.  Methinks there is some anti-Semitism showing its ugly neck here.

On May 14, 1948 at midnight, which was when the British mandate ended,   Israel was voted in as a state by  the nations then belonging to the UN.   Harry Truman, USA president, led the way. Israel became a member state on May 11, 1949.   It's neighbors were already in the UN except Jordan and Libya who had to wait until 1955.

. Egypt and Syria: both were united into one state who became a member on October 24, 1945 as the United Arab Republic so they had 2 votes.  Syria separated from Egypt in 1961. " Egypt and Syria were original Members of the United Nations from 24 October 1945.  Following a plebiscite on 21 February 1958, the United Arab Republic was established by a union of Egypt and Syria and continued as a single Member.  On 13 October 1961, Syria, having resumed its status as an independent State, resumed its separate membership in the United Nations.  On 2 September 1971, the United Arab Republic changed its name to the Arab Republic of Egypt.".

The UN had 56 member states.  On November 29, 1947, the UN GENERAL ASSEMBLY  voted for a partition of Palestine into an Arab and a Jewish state with Jerusalem to be international. The vote was 33 YES and 13 NO.   Britain and 9 other nations abstained.  Israel accepted their piece in the division and would declare their state.  The Arabs did not.  The six Arab nations in the General Assembly staged a walkout in protest. They attacked Israel instead when they declared their independence.

Not surprisingly, the British actually urged King Abdullah of Jordan to  invade and annex the Arab sections of what would become Israel  to his kingdom. To Abdullah this was not enough. He wanted Jerusalem too.  As a result Jerusalem came under siege.  May 14, 1948, Israel announced their statehood at midnight when the British mandate ended.

May 15, 1948: On May 15, 1948, the Arab states issued their response statement and Egypt, Syria, Jordan, Lebanon and Iraq attack Israel. this was Israel's "War of Independence."   They were Israel's closest neighbors.  It was at midnight that the British mandate ended.  David Ben Gurion had signed Israel's Declaration of Independence.

February 24 to July 20, 1949: Israel signs armistice agreements with Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan and Syria.  Note that Iraq had attacked but did not sign the armistice.

In Israel's declaration are the words, "“We offer peace and amity to all neighboring states and their peoples and invite them to cooperate with the independent Jewish nation for the common good of all…"  The neighbors have attacked Israel since then in 1956, 1967, 1973.  Since then terrorists have taken over attacking Israel such as the PLO, then Fatah, Hamas and a sundry of others.

What must happen today is that the Palestinian Arabs must recognize Israel as a Jewish state or there will be no peace.  It was created by the UN and voted upon.  It cannot be terrorized by those who grumbled about the vote.  Their thoughts of an Islamic Caliphate cannot supercede what is rightfully already created or Israel will defend its position rightfully.  The UN cannot sit back and keep dunning Israel for its position.  They should back Israel.  By not doing so, they have given the green light to the terrorists for their behaviors.
